We Are Everywhere ? September 11

Here is your weekly overview of what happened in the world of European lesBian entertainment. We keep you up-to-date on all the latest events, movie releases, TV storylines and who did what to whom.

TV land

Ireland
Gay youth documentary Growing Up Gay has been nominated for Event of the Year at the Irish Gay & Lesbian awards, the GALAS. Find out more on Gaelick.

UK

Fans of Coronation Street’s Sophian should head over to AfterEllen, where an interview with actresses Brooke Vincent and Sacha Parkinson is featured. Also don’t forget to check out Ley’s latest recap of the Sophian storyline.

Without giving us an air date yet, BBC Three has released some character descriptions for their highly anticipated lesbian drama, Lip Service. Let Anna tell you all about it here.

Movies

France
The French are releasing two films with some lesBian potential. The first one is Happy Few, which is about two straight couples swapping partners. The two women apparently act out their attraction in a “morbid lesbian scene”, which really doesn’t sound too promising.

 Still from ‘Tomboy’

That’s why I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the other release (scheduled for 2011), Tomboy. Filmmaker Céline Sciamma makes her comeback with this production after debuting with the lesBian teen drama Naissance des pieuvres (Water Lilies) in 2007. The storyline of Tomboy is centred around Laure who moves into a new neighbourhood with her little sister. Because she is in need of new friends and doesn’t know anybody, Laure decides to dress as a boy. She meets Lisa and they become close, but Lisa doesn't know that her new best friend is not a boy. Find out more about Sciamma in this interview on Cineuropa.

Germany

Straight from Cologne comes the new short Lady Pochoir [trailer], which is about a bike courier who spray paints the city at night. She meets an art publisher and sparks begin to fly while she also has to fend off a female police officer who seems more interested in her than strictly necessary. The short will be shown at various international film festivals, see their website for details.

Music

Europe

American singer Beth Hart is coming to Europe next month. Countries on her tour schedule include Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands. Go to her website for details.

UK
Have you read Chantal’s latest portrait of Alison Goldfrapp yet?

Sports

France
The Gay & Lesbian Sports Federation (FSGL) is hosting their second forum in Paris tomorrow (September 12). Events included are debates and sports demonstrations. Admission is free of charge and you can find out more here.

The Netherlands
Should you be interested in meeting some professional LGB athletes, make sure to mark September 25 in your calendar. Go here for details and registration.

Books & Magazines

The Netherlands

Dutch Millennium fans should pay attention! Publisher Signatuur has started a Lisbeth Salander look-alike contest. If you become a fan of her on Facebook and post your look-alike picture there, you can win a trip to Stockholm.

UK
Scottish crime writer Val McDermid was recently interviewed at the Melbourne Writers Festival. You can listen to the interview or read the transcript of it here.

Culture, Parties & Events

Europe
Feel like going on a lesbian cruise that takes you from Spain to Germany next spring? Then make sure to sign up for the L-CRUISE by the end of October. They need more reservations in order to keep the cruise exclusively lesbian.

Denmark
The city of Copenhagen is to open a gay cultural centre. The culture and leisure administration has approved the establishment of such a centre where homosexuals, bisexuals and transvestites can feel at home. The new building would house a café, library, meeting rooms and have a secretariat handling operations for the milieu’s groups and organisations.

Germany
Next week it’s time for LaD.I.Y.fest in Berlin. Let Joan tell you all about it here.

The Netherlands

On October 8 you can go to the special Dance & Date edition of the women-only party SIN in Rotterdam. They’re working with colour codes to express what you’re (not) looking for and there will also be a special guest in the form of TV host Bridget Maasland. Apparently she’s looking for true love in her new TV show, and she’s willing to ‘try anything’. Do I really have to start whining again about how straight women experimenting with other women on TV is not the same as decent lesBian representation?

Russia

If you’re near Saint Petersburg between September 16-25, be sure to check out what the second International Queer Culture Festival has to offer. Check out their official website for (programme) details.

Spain
Spanish news site ABC reports that the annual Christmas lottery will issue a special ‘Gay Luck’ ticket. 80% of the revenue of these tickets will go to Spanish gay charities.
