More Maryland Senators Supporting Marriage; Vote Expected Next Week
Two more Maryland state senators have expressed public support for the marriage equality legislation that is being considered by the General Assembly. This increases the number of senators who have said they would vote for the bill to 24?the minimum majority needed for approval in the 47-member Senate. ?I think it?s the fair thing to do,? said Sen. Katherine A. Klausmeier on Monday, and Sen. Edward J. Kasemeyer added, ?I don?t see how you can deny the right.? Kalusmeier had publicly struggled with her position on the bill. The Senate Judiciary Proceedings Committee has scheduled a vote for Thursday, and seven of the 11 members say they hope to send the bill forward. The bill will likely reach the Senate floor next week. If it passes, it will move on to the House, which has traditionally been the more liberal of the two chambers regarding social policy. Gov. Martin O?Malley has said he would sign the bill if it comes to his desk.Related Media Coverage:The Washington Post ? February 15, 2011?Md. Senate ? Largest Remaining Hurdle to Same-Sex Marriage ?
