Maryland Senate Sends Transgender Protections Bill Back to Committee

The Maryland Senate voted 27-20 on Monday to reject a proposal that would have extended some anti-discrimination protections to the transgender community by sending it back to the Senate committee on the last day of the 2011 session. The bill would have prevented housing and employment discrimination on the basis of an applicant?s gender identity and was passed by the Judicial Proceedings Committee by a 7 to 4 vote on Saturday. The wording of the bill garnered some controversy after it removed language that would have ensured protections in the area of public accommodations as well. The Associated Press points out that the fate of this bill was similar to that of the marriage equality bill, which was sent back to committee by the Maryland House without a conclusive vote.Related Media Coverage:Associated Press ?
