Nevada Assembly Passes Bill In Support of Protections for Transgender People
Members of the Nevada State Assembly voted 29-13 on Monday in support of a bill that would outlaw job discrimination against people based on their gender identity or expression. Assemblyman Paul Aizley, D-Las Vegas, introduced the bill and all 26 Democrats backed the measure, as well as 3 of 16 Republicans. Aizley noted that the 25,000 transgender people in Nevada are often denied jobs. Lawmakers banned similar discrimination against the gay community in 1999.Although other bills that would increase transgender protections are coming up in the Senate, activists were especially pleased with this bill?s passage. ?This is the most important of all the bills among the transgender community,? said Lauren Scott, a leader of the Reno transgender community. She said that the visibility of the transgender community at hearings and among conversations with legislators was especially influential. ?It?s easier to discriminate against people when you don?t know them,? she pointed out. The bill is now headed to the Senate, where supporters think they have enough votes for it to pass. Gov. Brian Sandoval has not indicated whether or not he will sign it if it reaches his desk.Related Media Coverage:Las Vegas Review-Journal ?
