Although many people faced tough economic times in 2011, there was still a lot to be thankful for this year, especially for the LGBT community.
Three new states began offering civil unions in 2011: Illinois, Hawaii and Delaware.
New York became the sixth state in the US to legalize same-sex marriage.
President Obama overturned "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and now any qualified person, regardless of sexual orientation can serve openly in the U. S. Military.
President Obama also said he is no longer going to defend DOMA and he supports the Respect for Marriage Bill making its way through Congress.
