At Chick-fil-A opening, no feathers fly

At Chick-fil-A opening, no feathers fly

Most new restaurant owners suffer a case of nerves before the grand opening, wondering how many customers will show up.

Brent Allen already had a line out the door - more than 100 people camped overnight in a parking lot in Walnut Creek for his chicken sandwiches - so he just had to wonder how many protesters would show up Thursday.

Allen, the owner-operator of the first Chick-fil-A in the central Bay Area, was greeted by about a dozen sidewalk protesters who were angered by the fast-food chain CEO's opposition to same-sex marriage.

Cathy also said he donated money to groups that challenged gay marriage propositions, which ignited a controversy that led to "kiss-ins" by same-sex marriage activists at the chain's restaurants across the country.

Most customers who left the restaurant shrugged off the controversy and stopped short of connecting their lunch choices with their political preferences.
