KANSAS CITY, Missouri -- A federal judge on the western side of Missouri has joined a circuit judge from St. Louis in ruling that the state's gay-marriage ban is unconstitutional.
U.S. District Judge Ortrie D. Smith ruled that the ban violated the U.S. Constitution's due process and equal protection rights.
But Judge Smith, unlike the circuit judge, stayed his ruling pending possible appeals.
A federal judge rules that Missouri's state ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional, joining a circuit judge in making such a ruling.
