Seasonal Change: Reflecting on 17 years of Metro Weekly highlights how much our LGBT community has changed and what remains to be done

Opinion: While next week may be the official 17th anniversary of Metro Weekly, this week actually marks the 17th year of working on the magazine. It did, after all, take a few days to turn the idea into a printed reality. I've always felt our springtime anniversary was fitting, in a Hallmark kind of way, given that the season is one of renewal and growth. And the magazine has certainly renewed itself and grown over the years. Looking back at our earliest issues for me is a bit like looking back at my high school yearbook pictures — recognizable, but very different. We all, I hope, change with our times. I know that it isn't just Metro Weekly that's grown and changed since 1994 – I've grown and changed right along with it, just as our entire LGBT community has. I'm old enough now to be able to discern how much things can change over a larger span of time, and how far we've all come in the past three decades simply amazes me. ... (more)

New York Governor Pledges to Advocate for Marriage Equality Legislation

On Wednesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York held a closed-door meeting between himself, his top advisors, and leaders of the state?s prominent LGBT advocacy groups to discuss marriage equality legislation. At the meeting, Gov. Cuomo expressed his sincere investment in passing such legislation in New York and said he is prepared to devote his attention to the cause this spring. In 2009, a marriage equality bill was defeated in the state Senate when former Gov. David A. Paterson overestimated the bill?s support. Gov. Cuomo emphasized that he is not keen to repeat that mistake and will avoid bringing the bill to a vote without confidence in its favorable reception. Attendees of the meeting asserted that Gov. Cuomo?s enthusiastic participation signals a crucial change in the movement for marriage equality.Related Media Coverage:The New York Times - March 9, 2011"Cuomo Vows Personal Push to Legalize Gay Marriage"http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/10/nyregion/10marriage.html?_r=1&amp

Help GOING DOWN IN LA LA LAND the New Casper Andreas film

THE FILM Based on the novel by Andy Zeffer, "Going Down in LA-LA Land" is a candid, sexy, and outrageously funny look at what and actor can -- and will do -- to survive in Hollywood.  This dark comedy takes a riveting and uncensored look at our celebrity-obsessed culture and some people's need to be loved, adored, and adulated at any cost! Please watch the trailer above to learn more about the film and check out our facebook page with lots of pictures.
OUR GOAL "Going Down in LA-LA Land" is almost finished and it will have its world premiere as the Closing Night film at the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival on May 1st. Other upcoming screenings confirmed are Opening Night at the Rainbow Film Festival in Honolulu, and the gay film festivals in Milan, Zurich and Boston, also in May. Many more festivals will  be announced very soon. After its festival run, we are  also planning to take the films to select theaters and release it on DVD and VOD.
YOUR SUPPORT Please help us finish the film by essentially pre-ordering the DVD for $30, (Check out all the great rewards offered to the left: premiere tickets! signed DVDs! your name in the film's credits! Associate Producer credit!) and join us in bringing "Going Down in LA-LA Land" to life and to audiences everywhere.
Like our other films "Going Down in LA-LA Land" was made on a very low budget, thanks to an amazing and hardworking cast and crew. Still it's our most ambitious and expensive film to date, and we are out of funds. To cover the final costs of finishing the film (color corrections, sound mixing, credits) as well as promotional expenses (poster artwork, website, festival submissions) we need your support. Donate what you can and please help us spread the word about this campaign on facebook, twitter, and email.
I'm personally thrilled with how the film is coming together and  believe it's my best one yet. I hope to be able to share it with you very soon!
Sincerely,
Casper Andreas (writer/director)Go to KICK START
