We Are Everywhere - October 2

Here is your weekly overview of what happened in the world of European lesBian entertainment. We keep you up-todate on all the latest events, movie releases, TV storylines and who did what to whom.

TV land

Norway

TV presenter and singer Heidi Marie Vestrheim appeared on the TV show Beat for Beat last week, where she performed songs by Linda Perry and Dolly Parton.

UK

Can't wait for Lip Service to start airing on October 12? Entertain yourself with these cast interviews, in which all the characters are introduced.

Check out our latest recaps of the Sophian storyline on Coronation Street and of Ana and Theresa on AETR.

Theatre

The Netherlands

Comedian Claudia de Breij has won the Poelifnario award, a prestigious award by the theatre and concert hall organisation. De Breij received the award for her show Hete Vrede (Hot Peace).

Movies

Norway

There's a new Norwegian movie being released entitled Fjellet (The Mountain). The storyline revolves around a lesbian couple, who return to the place where they lost their 5-year-old son. The movie was privately funded by the director Ole Giaever and will debut at the opening day of the International Film Festival in Tromsø in January.

Music

Europe

K's Choice are still continuing their European tour, to which they have added a few new dates. From November until February you can catch them in cities around Belgium, Germany, Austria, France and the Netherlands. For the exact places and dates check out their website [hat tip @ eurOut reader gm].

Belgium

Music video or porn flick? Sometimes it's a thin line. Read Anna's thoughts about the matter here.

UK

While you're at it, also check out our latest portrait on Scottish singer Horse.

Sports

Norway

Professional sports women are just like you and I. Handball player Anja Edin proves this by doing a little dancing in this video.

Fellow handball player Gro Hammerseng will make an appearance on the TV show Hvem kan slå Aamot & Kjus, in which she is going to try and beat some guys at a few physical challenges. The episode will air on October 7.

Germany/Belgium

German cyclist Judith Arndt has won a silver medal in the Road Cycling World Championships in Geel, Belgium last week.

Research

There was so much mention of research-related lesBian news this week, I thought it asked for its own section.

Belgium

Belgian researchers are looking for people to discuss the representation of the LGBT community in (mainly American) TV series. Find out more information here.

The Netherlands

You can also participate in LGBT research more indirectly, by helping the SCP advertise about their research for which they need a lot of LGBT participants. You can get the exact details here.

UK

A BBC survey was published this week, which showed we are generally disappointed in the LGBT representation on TV, while 18% of the general public thinks we shouldn't be seen at all. Check back early next week when we look into this survey in more detail. For now, read the reaction of DIVA editor Jane Czyzselska to the survey.

Ever wondered what makes someone to become a gay icon? I know I have, because I usually don't really get it. The University of Sheffield announced this week they are going to research the exact topic. Sounds like fun.

United States

Glaad released their annual report of LGBT representation on US television this week. Like every year, it doesn't look very good, but it's still a slight improvement over previous years. Find out more on the Glaad website.

 Books & Magazines

France/Europe

Planning on going on holiday to France soon and are you not sure where to go? Lonely Planet has released a Gay & Lesbian guide to France.

The Netherlands

Even though it's already October, I only just recently found out it's Anna Blaman year. Blaman was a lesbian writer, whose books from the thirties and fourties are thought of to be very important, although to be honest, I always found them rather boring. This month the book Langoureus verlangen will be released, in which different authors talk about what the works of Blaman have meant to them.

Are you in need of a few more lesbian-themed books to add to your collection? Check out our Website of the Week: Bold Strokes Books.

Events

UK

Ever heard of GELtoday? If you haven't you really should change that, because they organise awesome events like the Pink Affair, which takes place on November 20 and this includes performances by both Rhona Cameron and all-women band Greymatter.

The Netherlands

On October 11, Sports & Pink is organised in Utrecht, during which there will be information and discussion about the topic of sports and homosexuality.

France

Are you (still) a fan of The L Word and would you like to meet some of the actresses in real life? Now's your chance, as Kate Moennig and Rachel Shelley will be at the Planet Babylon convention on October 30. Find out more here.
