Hawaii Legislature Takes Steps Toward Civil Unions for All Couples
Hawaii?s Senate Judiciary Committee voted on Tuesday in approval of a bill that would grant civil unions to all couples. The bill will now move on to a vote before the full Senate. While a nearly identical bill made its way through the state legislature, it was vetoed by then Republican Gov. Linda Lingle. Democratic lawmakers, who hold the majority in Hawaii legislature, are optimistic that newly elected Gov. Neil Abercrombie, also a Democrat, will approve the new bill. A similar bill passed this month in the Illinois Legislature.Related Media Coverage:KHON2.com - January 25, 2011"Civil Unions in Hawaii Pass Crucial First Vote"http://www.khon2.com/mostpopular/story/Civil-unions-in-Hawaii-pass-crucial-first-vote/NWwuQ03p202o0wTFZFM0mg.cspx
