Maryland House Delays Marriage Equality Bill
On Friday, the Maryland House of Delegates sent a marriage equality bill back to the House Judiciary Committee, effectively delaying its progression through the state legislature. The bill failed to garner the 71 votes needed for passage. An editorial in the Baltimore Sun claims that legislators overestimated the strength of support in the House and focused most of their attention on the Senate, which passed the bill with few issues. The editorial asserts that the bill could still be addressed this year and that influential supporters of marriage equality, such as Maryland Gov. Martin O?Malley, should advocate publicly for its passage.Related Media Coverage:The New York Times - March 11, 2011"Same-Sex Marriage Bill Falls Short in Maryland"http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/12/us/12marriage.htmlThe Baltimore Sun - March 12, 2011"Md.
