Virginia Governor Opposes Protections for Lesbian and Gay Adoptive Parents
On Tuesday, Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia told reporters he opposes regulations that would protect lesbian and gay couples wishing to adopt from discrimination. The proposed regulations were developed by former governor Tim Kaine in November 2009. Currently, only married couples and single men and women are allowed to adopt in Virginia, regardless of sexual orientation. According to the governor?s office, the changes would prohibit faith-based adoption groups from denying services to unmarried couples and single lesbian and gay people. During a House floor debate over the issue on Tuesday, several delegates, including openly gay Del. Adam Ebbin, spoke out in support of the adoption protections and asked Gov. McDonnell to support them.Related Media Coverage:The Washington Post - April 5, 2011"McDonnell Opposes Allowing Same-Sex Couples to Adopt Children in Virginia"http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/virginia-politics/post/mcdonnell-opposes-allowing-same-sex-couples-to-adopt/2011/04/05/AFryrIkC_blog.html
