Arizona LGBT Advocacy Groups Support Inclusive Anti-Bullying Legislation

Equality Arizona and the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) Phoenix, two LGBT advocacy groups, are rallying behind proposed legislation that would protect Arizona students from bullying. The two bills, HB 2580 and SB 1549, are collectively known as the Arizona Safe Schools Act. According to Tom Mann, the board chair of Equality Arizona, ?The Arizona Safe Schools Act will provide schools the guidance they need to keep all students, including gay and transgender students, safe.? The Act addresses harassment and bias-motivated bullying, as well as cyber bullying, requiring public school officials to take action to protect all students. If the bills pass, Arizona will be one of 10 states that designate specific protections in state law against acts of bullying that target students based on perceived or actual sexual orientation and gender identity.Related Media Coverage:KPHO.com - February 1, 2011"New Bill Would Combat Anti-Gay, Other Bully Targets"http://www.kpho.com/valleynews/26699292/detail.html
