Bill Protecting Transgender Employees Passes Hawaii Senate

The Hawaii State Senate passed a bill on Tuesday that will protect employees from discrimination on the basis of gender identity, a policy already in place in 12 states and Washington D.C. The legislation received a 22-2 vote and must now be signed by Gov. Neil Abercrombie to become law. Hawaii lawmakers also legalized civil unions earlier in this legislative session.
