Ross Stores Respond to Transgender Discrimination with Policy Changes
According to the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington, Ross Stores is clarifying its policy on discrimination after an employee at a Ross Dress for Less store in Lynnwood ordered a transgender woman, Christy_M, to leave the store while she was trying on clothes last November. After the incident, Christy_M expressed her devastation on a web forum. In December, the ACLU took on the case, contacting Ross Stores and accusing them of unlawful discrimination under Washington state law. ACLU attorney Lindsey Soffes wrote, "Ross was legally required to afford (Christy_M) 'full enjoyment' of its Lynnwood store, which includes the right to enter the store and not be treated as unwelcome, unaccepted, undesired or unsolicited." Ross Stores has since responded, saying it would be refining its discrimination policy and providing employees with special instructions about accommodating customer?s gender identities.Related Media Coverage:The Seattle Post-Intelligencer - February 8, 2011"ACLU: Transgender Woman, Ejected from Lynnwood Store, Spurs Policy Change"http://www.seattlepi.com/local/435122_transgender.html?source=rss
