Berkeley schools chief finalist drops out
The lone finalist for Berkeley schools superintendent withdrew his candidacy Tuesday in the wake of public protests over his presumed position on same-sex marriage.
[...] last week, days before the expected appointment, critics uncovered a 2008 memo from Heatley, who was then superintendent in Chino (San Bernardino County), to the school board suggesting he backed a resolution supporting Proposition 8, the state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.
While critics argued that the memo showed Heatley opposed same-sex marriage, the Chino Valley school board president at the time, Michael Calta, said Heatley never took a position on the resolution outlined in the memo.
