Florida's Volusia County Council to Consider LGBT-Inclusive Ordinance

The Volusia County Council in Florida plans to schedule a time in the near future to discuss a possible human rights ordinance that would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Councilman Josh Wagner suggested the idea this past Thursday, and his colleagues agreed to consider an ordinance during a discussion in an upcoming meeting. There is currently no federal or state law that prohibits discrimination, but several local ordinances have been passed in other parts of Florida?notably Orange County in November and Leon County last May?which give legal recourse to victims of discrimination and work to deter discrimination in housing, the workplace, and public places like restaurants.?Discrimination should be against the law?we need to address it,? said Wagner. ?It?s a really strong way to deal with it, with very minimal fiscal impact on the government,? added Joe Saunders, state field director for Equality Florida. The Orange County ordinance passed with much support, but the Leon County ordinance faced tougher opposition. Chairman Frank Bruno said he will try to schedule the ordinance as part of the March 3 or March 17 meeting.Related Media Coverage:The Daytona Beach News-Journal ?
