Is Sacha Parkinson saying goodbye to Corrie?s cobbles?

This weekend I was quietly enjoying a catch up of my favorite television shows when my Twitter timeline, direct message inbox and e-mail inbox exploded with tweets and retweets of the latest The People cover that was due to launch May 29.

The cover speculated that not one, not two, but four beloved Weatherfield characters were waving goodbye… including Sacha Parkinson’s Sian Powers in what was being called ‘The Big Corrie Kill Off’.

From the moment that image was released my Twitter feed went, to say it lightly, a little crazy; people were calling out not only The People, but ITV, Brooke Vincent, Sacha and their mothers Nicola Anderton and Leigh Parkinson as well.

According to insiders, Sacha is “definitely exiting the show at the beginning of 2012. Her lover Sophie falls for Amber, who left Weatherfield in 2009 to go to university in London and returns this year. Amber’s thoughts about her sexuality have been shifting as her attitudes change and Sophie seduces her. Their passion leaves Sian heartbroken.” Amber is the biological daughter of Sophie’s boss, Dev.

My first reaction literally was a sarcastic ‘Oh Jeez, here we go again…’ – and those who live in the UK know exactly what I am talking about. Some of the UK newspapers are notorious for blowing things way out of proportion and have been wrong on more than one occasion as just recently The Daily Fail Mail reported prime minister David Cameron wanted a ban on all same-sex kissing scenes until after the watershed, but this, which we are happy to report, is actually NOT the case.

Things seemed to lighten up slightly when Brooke Vincent (Sophie) took to her Twitter in a bid to calm down the fans.

Even Sacha herself, who is usually more reserved about speaking out about the papers than Brooke, took to Twitter.

Just as things seemed to calm down, Holly Quin-Ankrah (Cheryl) confirmed that, at least for her, the story was true and that she was indeed leaving the cobbles.

After staying mum for even quite a while after that, Sacha herself started a bit of a craze when she retweeted dozens of messages from fans wishing her luck, telling her how much they’ll miss her, but that they’ll support her no matter what and how much not only the Sophie and Sian storyline meant to them, but also how much of a role model Sacha has been for young girls…

… and then there was heartbreak all around when, with two tweets, Sacha seemed to confirm that the rumours were more than just rumours:

While Brooke recently signed a contract to stay on the cobbles for yet another year, Sacha seemed to have opted to not renew her contract when her current one ends at the end of the year.

As many of my friends know, I’m not the biggest soap fan; most of them I can’t stand, some I tolerate for an occasional storyline and some I love to hate, and hate to love, but for some reason Coronation Street does something to me, not to mention it finally does a lesbian teen storyline justice.

I can’t even begin to tell you how much the Sophie and Sian storyline has opened my eyes to the struggles teens faced, and still are facing in terms of their own sexuality or the people around them and the reactions. You see, unlike most teenagers, I’ve never had a problem with me being gay, nor did the people around me as far as I am aware of, but I know of a few who have had problems and I’ve seen them blossom and grow comfortably into their own skin thanks to the Sophie/Sian storyline.

There’s no doubt that I’ll be having a tissue box or two ready if that send off really does come - I don’t think I’ve been this attached to a fictional, but so incredibly important, pairing and the actresses that portray them since – well since ever, really.

All I know is that no matter what happens, I’ll support Sacha no matter what she decides to do. She is one heck of a talented actress and whether it is on the cobbles of Coronation Street or in a variety of other film and television roles; there is no doubt in my mind that she’ll have a long and bright career.

Of course we’ll keep you updated on any official, official news (i.e. news from the Coronation Street press office) regarding Sacha when it becomes available, but in the meantime we’d like to know how you feel about the possibility that Sacha might hang up Sian’s leather jacket and leave the Corrie Cobbles. Let us know in the comments!
