Rhode Island Legislator Seeks State Amendment to Ban Marriage Equality
Rep. Jon Brien of Rhode Island is introducing a bill in the state House on Thursday that would put marriage equality to a ballot vote in 2012. Brien is a Woonsocket Democrat, and his bill seeks a constitutional amendment to ban marriage between anyone other than a man and a woman. He says that the definition of marriage should be decided by the people rather than the General Assembly. The Associated Press reports that the bill has slim chances at best. Analysts have previously predicted Rhode Island to be a potential site for marriage equality in the near future, with House Speaker Gordon Fox calling it a priority this year and new Gov. Lincoln Chafee as a strong supporter.Related Media Coverage:Associated Press ?
