Appeals Court Rules Wal-Mart Has Right to Fire Employee for Anti-Gay Comments

A federal appeals court ruled in favor of Wal-Mart?s right to fire Tanisha Matthews from a Joliet store for telling a co-worker she would go to hell for being gay. Wal-Mart?s Discrimination and Harassment Prevention Policy, which Matthews violated, states that employees may be fired for engaging in conduct that could be reasonably interpreted as harassment based on an individual?s sexual orientation. The co-worker?s claim against Matthews was confirmed by five other employees, resulting in Matthews? dismissal. Matthews? claim of religious discrimination was struck down by the Appeals Court, which notably stated that ?if Matthews is arguing that Wal-Mart must permit her to admonish [gay people] at work to accommodate her religion, the claim fails.?Related Media Coverage:The Chicago Sun-Times - April 7, 2011"Appeals Court: Wal-Mart Can Fire Worker for Telling Co-worker Lesbians Go to Hell"http://www.suntimes.com/business/4699034-417/appeals-court-wal-mart-can-fire-worker-for-telling-co-worker-lesbians-go-to-hell.html
