Atlanta Mayor Looking into Cover-Up Allegations
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is looking into allegations that the Atlanta Police Department has destroyed evidence in the Atlanta Eagle raid federal lawsuit. Early this month, lawyers representing the plaintiffs in this case filed court documents alleging that the police were destroying evidence to cover up what happened during the raid. "We're going to get to the bottom of this and if we find out the assertions are true...we will deal with this in swift fashion," Reed stated. Reed is "extremely frustrated" with the recent allegations because his administration and the city have been trying to improve the relationship with the city's LGBT community, especially within the police department since Reed was in office. The Atlanta Eagle, a bar in Georgia, was raided last year, and many patrons are suing the city with the claim that their constitutional rights were violated. Specifically, they claim that the Atlanta Police Department conducted a warrantless search, forced patrons to the ground, searched them and conducted background checks. Allegations of anti-gay slurs made by the officers during the raid have also been made.Related Media Coverage:Atlanta Journal Constitution - October 22, 2010"Atlanta mayor promises investigation into report police destroyed records"http://www.ajc.com/news/atlanta/atlanta-mayor-promises-investigation-688240.html
