Conversation with Senator Joe Lieberman on DADT

Today I was up at the main University of Connecticut campus in Storrs to hear Senator Lieberman speak on DADT at the Rainbow Center. Most of his talk was the basic, “I’m in favor of the bill and want to see it passed.” He mentioned that 25 nations have an integrated military and the U.S. soldiers are already fighting along side of gay soldiers from other nations. Sen. Lieberman quoted Sen. Barry Goldwater, “It’s not important if you are straight, just that you can shoot straight.”He said that there are two reasons to pass the bill; one, it is the right thing to do and second we are losing mission critical personal. That we need soldiers who can speak and know the culture and it doesn’t make sense to force them out of the military. He went on to say that, there are some in Congress who feel that the study on integrating the military should be completed first. Sen. Lieberman said that he thought the bill should be passed first and the study should then be done on how to implement the policy. He then opened up the floor for questions and I asked him if the repel law would also cover transgender. His answer threw me, he said that the original bill only covered gay and lesbians and that it should not have applied to transsexuals! Well senator, I know a lot of trans-soldiers who were forced out of the military, not because there are gay or lesbian but just because they are trans.Afterward, I asked him what he thought the chances are that ENDA would be passed and he said that he thought that DADT would be voted on first.
