North Carolina State Bar Approves Anti-Bias Language
Final approval has been given to language discouraging attorneys from having personal bias against representing gay and transgender people. On Friday, the North Carolina State Bar Council voted 35-20 in favor of adding sexual orientation and gender identity to a list of characteristics that should not lead to biased conduct or prevent lawyers from declining to take a case on moral grounds. In the past, attorneys and interest groups were concerned because lawyers have the ability to decline taking cases on moral grounds. Lawyers may still withdraw from a case if they believe that they are unable to defend someone well.Related Media Coverage:Associated Press - October 29, 2010"Anti-bias language given final OK by NC State Bar"http://www.wbtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=13410898
