Marriage Equality Bill Expected to Pass in Uruguay
The Uruguayan Parliament is considering a marriage equality bill that would alter the language of the country?s Civil Code to refer to spouses instead of husband and wife. The bill?s author, Sebastian Sabini, is a member of the country?s Frente Amplio coalition which holds a majority in both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. Thus, the bill is expected to pass into law in the coming months. Sabini told Chile?s El Mercurio, ?We do not focus so much on the issue of gay marriage but of equal marriage regardless of sex, gender or religion.? Uruguay became the first South American nation to legalize civil unions for lesbian and gay couples in 2007.Related Media Coverage:Star Observer Online - April 10, 2011"Uruguay to Legalise Same-Sex Marriage"http://www.starobserver.com.au/news/2011/04/10/uruguay-to-legalise-same-sex-marriage/49009
