NY LT Governor: ?Marriage is a fundamental right?

New York's Lt. governor Bob Duffy spoke to those gathered for the marriage and transgender equality day in Albany to assure activists that they had his support - and the support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

He said, "The right to marry is a fundamental human right denied to a class of people soley because of who they are. It's not right, it's not fair and it's not American."

Duffy is the child of a former Catholic nun and a former Catholic seminarian. "There was a lot of religion in my house," he said, but added that "It was always about fundamental civil rights for everyone."

Duffy added that Gov. Cuomo's commitment to marriage isn't just for show. "No one should underestimate Gov. Cuomo's committment to marriage eqality," he said, He noted that Cuomo is traveling around the state to talk about marriage equality as well as two other issues. Duffy added that marriage equality "is a statement about New York in terms of what we stand for. It's about bringing ny back to be the most progressive state in the nation."
"If New York State passes this, we will be a state that is open to everybody; that reinforces that no matter who you are, we want to you to be part of this great state. We cannot achieve that if we close the door to an entire group of Americans."

He said that he expects marriage equality to pass the legislature this year "if the senators vote their conscience and not their fear."
