Hawaii to Discuss Civil Unions Bill Next Tuesday
The Hawaii House Judiciary Committee has scheduled a public hearing for Tuesday to discuss the possibility of civil unions for gay and lesbian couples. The proposed legislation has already passed the state Senate, and is almost identical to a bill that passed the Legislature last year before being vetoed by former Republican Governor Linda Lingle. The current Democratic Governor Neil Abercrombie has spoken out in support of civil unions. The bill ?would grant some of the rights of marriage to same-sex couples without authorizing marriage itself,? according to the Associated Press. It would provide insight into the implementation, rights, responsibilities, and terminations of these civil unions. The Judiciary Committee will consider an alternate civil unions bill during this hearing as well.Related Media Coverage:Associated Press ?
