Obama Administration Urges UN to Ensure Equal Protection for LGBT People
On Tuesday, the Obama administration urged the United Nations Human Rights Council to continue condemning human rights violations that are based on sexual orientation or gender identity. U.S. ambassador to the council, Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe, commented on the matter, saying, "The U.S. government is firmly committed to supporting the right of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals to lead productive and dignified lives, free from fear and violence." President Obama also released a statement last weekend with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, announcing the creation of a government position to monitor the treatment of LGBT people in the Western Hemisphere.Related Media Coverage:The Los Angeles Times - March 23, 2011"Obama Administration Calls on United Nations to Support Gay Rights"http://www.latimes.com/news/la-na-obama-gays-20110323,0,2386655.story?track=rss
