Interview with Travel Writer and Author Tom Gates

I love to travel. And when I'm not traveling, I love to read about other people's travel adventures. So, naturally, I loved Tom Gates' book Wayward: Fetching Tales From a Year On The Road. Tom Gates is a gay man who quit his stressful music industry job to take a year off to travel and write about it. His stories are touching (meeting a lonely gay man in Malaysia), funny (musing about the celebrity of travel writers) and disturbing (eating dog in Vietnam.) He can be sardonic one moment and gleefully moved the next. Tom Gates took some time to talk to us about his book, his travels and why every LGBT person should get off the couch and go see the world.

HIV/AIDS and the Military After 28 Years

Randy Shilts very accurately described the early stages of the treatment of HIV/AIDS in the military in his ground breaking book And The Band Played On. In short he described a military that when faced with an epidemic that at the time was largely viewed as being a gay disease, against the odds, they chose the higher road. The military’s initial response while far from perfect, was among the most progressive at the time.

Among other things the military made the wise choice of letting medical fact rather than social stigma and fear guide their policy. They recognized early on that HIV was not transmitted through casual contact and therefor those who had contracted HIV were not a threat to their coworkers. That realization led to a sensible policy tha…

Moldovan parliamentarians called on to combat discrimination and hatred

Currently, the Moldovan Parliament is debating an anti-discrimination law which in its current form provides protection against discrimination on various grounds, including sexual orientation.

The draft law was approved by the Moldovan government and is now in the hands of parliamentarians.

The proposed law caused strong reactions and criticism from religious organisations, encouraged by right wing American evangelicals, who are calling for the rejection of the entire draft law labelling it as a ‘gay law’.

A number of parliamentarians are also calling for a deletion of sexual orientation from the draft law and are making hateful and openly homophobic statements.

Former interim president of Moldova and the leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu has declared for the media on March 17, that his party will not vote for the anti-discrimination law:

We are liberals, but we are healthy and we want a healthy family. Homosexuality is a deviation, nature is nature, but it doesn’t mean that we need to put them [homosexuals] in the forefront. We don't take patients from psychiatric institutions to bring them on our main square. With all the respect for them, I will not vote.

On the same day, a demonstration of 150 opponents of the anti-discrimination law took place outside the Moldovan Parliament under the slogan ‘homosexuals stay at home!’.

ILGA-Europe is seriously concerned about the increasingly volatile situation in Moldova: aggressive homophobic rhetoric by religious organisations and a number of parliamentarians already resulted in threats being made to the members of GenderDoc-M, the leading Moldovan LGBTI rights organisation. Alexei Marcicov, President of the organisation, was verbally abused and had stones thrown at him near his home. Other human rights defenders supporting the anti-discrimination law have been threatened on the streets and near their homes.

Linda Freimane, Co-Chair of ILGA-Europe’s Executive Board said:

We are concerned with the situation in Moldova which is worsening with every day. There are serious concerns regarding growing homophobic sentiments and safety of LGBTI activists. ILGA-Europe calls on Moldovan politicians to immediately refrain from further incitement to hatred and act responsibly. It is their duty to protect all citizens from discrimination, particularly those who belong to marginalised and vulnerable communities.

Martin K.I. Christensen, Co-Chair of ILGA-Europe’s Executive Board, added:

Moldova is under obligation to introduce comprehensive anti-discrimination law and protect its citizens from discrimination on any ground, including sexual orientation. Moldova committed to passing an anti-discrimination law protecting all minorities under its visa liberalisation agreement with the European Union and within the EU-Moldova Action Plan. We call on the EU to assert its position with the Moldovan authorities and hold them accountable under their obligations.

As a Council of Europe member state, Moldova has supported the adoption of the Council of Europe’s Recommendation to combating discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity. Additionally, the United Nation’s Human Rights Committee called on Moldova to introduce such a law in 2009.

Gays arrested at Moscow demo

Fresh from his reported 2 1/2-day kidnapping by unidentified government officials, Moscow gay leader Nikolai Alekseev, along with 10 other activists, was arrested in Moscow Sept. 21 for staging an unauthorized demonstration at City Hall against Mayor Yuri Luzhkov’s strident homophobia.

The demo, dubbed “Luzhkov Faggot,” took place on Luzhkov’s 74th birthday and played off a recent court case in which gays unsuccessfully sued him for defamation for having called gays “faggots” (“gomiki”) on television.

The protesters were cited and released.

Alekseev has reported that he was abducted by unidentified government agents Sept. 15 at Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport. He said they dro…

Don't Stop Believing: It took some years, but the songs that helped save my life as a gay teen reawakened my love for music as an adult

Opinion: There was a point in my life when I thought nothing could have more meaning than music. Specifically, during my teenage years in high school and college. At 16, even a Mötley Crüe song can carry some impressive emotional weight – I, for one, thought Nikki Sixx to be an exceptionally talented songwriter, even if Mick Mars was a pedestrian guitarist. To this day, every time I hear The Cars I'm transported back to my best friend Roger's basement bedroom where I watched the still-new MTV, listened to Rush albums, silently tried to figure out why I couldn't like girls the same as he did, and plotted more than a few drunken weekend excursions. My young life had a soundtrack, one that reflected and amplified all the feelings I had, whether suppressed or not. In high school it was Mötley Crüe, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen and Kiss. In college I started out with Rush and Metallica, and ended up with Depeche Mode and The Cure. ... (more)

The spark that ignited the flame…that led future GLBT generations out of the dark

What a list we have this year for the fifth anniversary of GLBT History Month. It would be impossible to cover all of those who have done so much for our community as every day we make history through our actions, even the smallest and simplest ones. Those who are honored this year are some of the more high profile GLBT’s that have, either in the past or present, found the strength, courage and will to help drive our rights forward. Each and every one of them should be honored and are worthy of our attention.

But without taking away from those we are honoring where is the sixteen year old who came out against all the odds and made something of himself giving back to his community at the same time? Is he not part of our history, or does he not count a…

Teen Lesbian Couple Shot in the Head in Texas Park, One Fatally: VIDEO

A teen lesbian couple was found on Saturday in a public park near Corpus Christi on the Texas coast. Both had been shot in the head. One is now dead. No arrests have been made.
Watch KRIS-TV's report, AFTER THE JUMP...
MSNBC:
Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Christine Chapa, 18, were found in knee-deep grass in a nature area in Portland by a couple Saturday, said Portland Police Chief Randy Wright, who confirmed to msnbc.com details first reported by the Corpus Christi Caller Times. Olgin, originally from Ingleside but recently living in Corpus Christi, died; Chapa, of Sinton, was rushed to a hospital where she had surgery and was in serious but stable condition on Sunday, local NBC affiliate kristv.com reported. Wright said Chapa was still in the hospital on Monday...
...When asked if police had been able to determine if the girls' sexuality played any role in the shootings, Wright told msnbc.com: ?That?s always something that we?re looking for, but as of this point, we have not been able to establish that that had anything to do with the attack.?
He said they had been in communication with Chapa. He noted all indications were that ?third parties? were involved in the assault. ?If we had a name, you know, we?d be having a different conversation right now. But we have not been able to gather enough information to identify a suspect yet,? he said. ?It appears as if ? this was not just a random attack but that?s something that we really have to develop over time.?
Police say bullet casings were found at the scene and neighbors heard loud noises that could have been the gun, late on Friday night. According to police, the girls were found part way down an embankment off a scenic overlook. Police estimate the girls were found approximately nine hours after the attack.

City Council discusses medical marijuana dispensaries

Medical marijuana dispensaries were debated Monday by the San Diego City Council, which voted 6-1 to direct the City Attorney to draft an ordinance regulating dispensaries and making them legal with a list of qualifications and conditions.

But this isn’t a quick fix. City staff estimated that City Attorney Jan Goldsmith will return to the Council with an ordinance in mid-January, 2011.

It will be a different Council then, as Councilmember Donna Frye is termed out of office and Council President Ben Hueso is running for State Assembly.

Third District Councilmember Todd Gloria authored the motion which was seconded by Hueso. Carl DeMaio voted no and Marti Emerald was absent. Voting in favor were Sherri Lightner, Tony Young, Kevin Faulconer, Frye, Glor…

The MetroWeekly & LGBT Weekly Follow-Ups To The HRC Story

Clarification/Correction: Chris Geidner wrote "Although the sources say that no permanent replacement has been selected, none of the four sources were willing to say what, if any, role Woolard would play in the transition efforts at HRC." Beyond connecting a name to the unidentified paid consultant from the initial PHB piece, Chris Geidner indicated no conclusions as to what her role in the transition would be, assuming that Woolard would even have a role. After the story broke at  Pam's House Blend on Friday, August 26, 2011 -- as well as roughly simultaneously on the front page of Pam's House Blend's future host website Firedoglake -- MetroWeekly has released a follow-up piece. Chris Geidner of MetroWeekly independently confirmed that the HRC's executive director, Joe Solmonese, is indeed leaving his position.  What MetroWeekly is also reporting is that the consultant that we at PHB reported that the HRC is going to tap as the new executive director is going to instead be an interim director. And, MetroWeekly names the names of that would likely be that interim director: From the MetroWeekly article HRC's Solmonese to Step Down, Sources Say No Replacement Has Been Selected: ...[Joe Solmonese's] most recent contract expires in March 2012, and an informed source tells Metro Weekly that "a full candidate selection process will take place" to find his successor. A second source familiar with the situation said that a board conference call that originally was scheduled for Aug. 29 was rescheduled on the evening of Aug. 26 to take place later today, Aug. 27. The change was made after Spaulding published her report, which stated that an announcement about his departure was to be made public on Aug. 30. ...Although Spaulding reported that "a replacement executive director has been identified," four sources familiar with the situation describe that portion of the report as inaccurate -- with one saying the process is just beginning and will not be rapid. Spaulding refers to the person she reported was identified as Solmonese's replacement as "a paid consultant" who has worked with the organization. Metro Weekly has identified that consultant as Cathy Woolard, who most recently served on the senior leadership team at CARE, which describes itself as "a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty" and is based in Atlanta... The publication I write the Trans Progressive column for, the LGBT Weekly, also has a story up this morning as well by LGBT Weekly publisher Stampp Corbin, entitled HRC President to Step Down: ...Solmonese's tenure has had significant high points, most recently the passage of hates crime legislation and the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.  However, he has also had to deal with significant criticism for his handling of the Employment Non-discrimination Act.  While Solmonese had promised he would support the inclusion of gender identity to protect the transgender community, at the last minute Congressman Barney Frank and Solmonese tried to pass legislation that did not include transgender protections.  It created a firestorm within the LGBT community. Sources also suggest that the press release date was moved up to accommodate the questions that will be asked of Solmonese when he addresses the HRC Cleveland Dinner this evening.  Many current and former members of the HRC Board of Directors were caught off guard by the leak to Pam's House Blend, which suggests that Solmonese's decision to step down is a surprise. Given Solmonese's salary level, it is unlikely that he will be joining the Obama administration as many have suggested on blogs, as well as Facebook. I'm not sure if Stampp Corbin is interested in the job, but given his experience in HRC leadership in the past I would hope the HRC would consider him for the executive directorship. So there you have the latest, as reported by Metro Weekly and the LGBT Weekly. As for the significant staff shake-up that PHB also reported as being in the works at the HRC, neither Metro Weekly and the LGBT Weekly mentioned anything about that aspect of the original PHB story. Frankly, the staff aspect of the HRC story that PHB broke on Friday, August 26th is what I'm most interested in having independently verified or debunked -- what the staff looks like after the change in leadership is going to say a lot about how the HRC plans to move forward after this change of leadership.

Turing death may not have been suicide; last gay Holocaust survivor dies

On June 23, Google honored the late gay World War II mathematician/code-breaker Alan Turing with an animated "Turing machine" Google doodle, according to Advocate.com. In related news, Turing expert Jack Copeland said at an Oxford, England, conference that Turing's 1954 death was not a suicide. Turing, who was British, died of cyanide poisoning, and a half-eaten apple was found near his bed. However, Copeland said that Turing ate an apple every night, and that he had even made a to-do list for the following week.

Bullying…an evil epidemic in our midst

In the last two months there has been a public outcry over the number of GLBT youth who have committed suicide. It is not only brought the issue back into focus for our community but for the world. With celebrities speaking out on the issue and vigils being held across the country we collectively must do all we can to ensure that not only GLBT youth but all youth are not bullied and brought to feeling so hopeless that they feel the only way out is to take their own lives.

Statistically nine out of ten GLBT youth say they have been bullied and GLBT youth are four times more likely to take their own lives than heterosexual youth according to the Massachusetts Youth Risk Survey. In a study led by Dr. Caitlin Ryan and conducted as part of the Family Acceptance…

THEATER REVIEW: Diversionary?s world premiere ?Harmony, Kansas? is a ?must-see? musical

Music ? the great universal language ? both unites and divides seven gay farmers in the world premiere musical ?Harmony, Kansas,? playing through July 22 at Diversionary Theatre.
And by the way, harmony is the best thing about this show.
Heath (Jacob Caltrider) is your typical rugged, born-to-the-life farmer. He likes to keep to himself and dreams of adding 500 acres to the Kansas spread he owns.
His partner, transplanted big-city boy Julian (Tom Zohar), has a more expansive personality and a greater need for connection to a community.

The plot of ?Harmony, Kansas? may not be surprising, but spot-on casting, James Vasquez?s brilliant direction and the sound of these seven fine voices blending in glee club/1950s jazz harmonies make the show a must-see.

Anti-Bullying Bill Passes in Legislature

Students, Child Advocates, Teachers, and Civil Libertarians Applaud Legislature’s Action
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: (212) 549-2666; media@aclu.org
Augusta, ME- The Legislature voted late yesterday to pass a revised version of the anti-bullying bill, LD 1237, by a vote of 32 to 2 in the Senate, and 128 to 4 in the House.

“We applaud the Legislature for their efforts to stand up for kids,” said Ned McCann, Vice President of the Maine Children’s Alliance. “All Maine children deserve to be safe at school, and LD 1237 is a big step towards that goal.”

The bill went through an extensive revision process in the Education Committee, with input from students, educators and stakeholders, before members of the committee voted unanimously to support the bill.

"I witnessed bullying almost every day at school” says MaKayla Reed, a senior at Ellsworth High School who testified in support of the bill last year. “It means so much to me and students like me to know that the Legislature has supported a bill to help address this devastating issue."

“Teachers know firsthand that students can’t learn if they’re scared to be in school. This bill will help make sure that all kids feel safe in their classrooms and can focus on learning,” said Chris Galgay, the President of the Maine Education Association.

The bill improves on existing Maine law by providing a clear definition of bullying, an explicit prohibition on bullying behavior, a range of alternative discipline strategies for schools, policies focused on prevention and accountability, and training on how to address and prevent bullying for teachers. Maine law currently requires only that bullying be addressed in the Student Code of Conduct – something that has led to great variation in the state.

“This bill will make a real and positive difference in the lives of all of our students. While many schools in Maine are doing good work, this bill would ensure that all students are protected no matter what community they live in,” said Mary L. Bonauto, an attorney with Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders.

“The bill that the Legislature approved yesterday has struck an appropriate balance that protects student safety and freedom of speech. We can reduce bullying in school without undermining our fundamental civil liberties." said Alysia Melnick, Public Policy Council for the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine.

Groups supporting passage of the bill include the ACLU of Maine, Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), Maine Children’s Alliance, Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, EqualityMaine, the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence, the Maine Council of Churches, the Maine Education Association, the Maine Women’s Lobby, and the Religious Coalition Against Discrimination.

Study finds more gay characters on network TV

NEW YORK (AP) – The number of gay and bisexual characters on scripted broadcast network TV has risen slightly this season to 23 out of a total of nearly 600 roles, according to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

The 15th annual “Where We Are on TV” report released Wednesday found that 3.9 percent of actors appearing regularly on prime-time network drama and comedy series in the 2010-11 season will portray gay, lesbian or bisexual characters.

That’s up from 3 percent in the 2009-10 season. The increase in 2008-09 was 2.6 percent.

Only six of the 23 gay and lesbian characters this season are nonwhite, GLAAD found.

Using information provided by ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and CW, the group reviewed 84 scripted series announced…

Zach Wahls, His Two Moms, & The Future of Same-Sex Marriage

What's the most persistent myth about being raised by gay
parents? "That you are a child abuse victim," says Zach Wahls,
author of the new book,
My Two Moms: Lessons of Love, Strength and What Makes a
Family.
Wahls became an internet sensation after a video of him
defending his mothers' same-sex marriage was uploaded to YouTube.
His 2011 testimony before the Iowa House Judiciary Committee has
racked up over 18 million views and led to appearances on The Daily
Show, Letterman, Ellen, and many other places.
Now comes My Two Moms, in which the 20-year-old University of
Iowa engineering student explains what it's like to grow up as a
child as the child of same-sex parents and uses the lessons he
learned as an Eagle Scout to talk about why marriage equality
should be the law of the land.
Wahls sat down with Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie to discuss why
his childhood was a lot like yours, the
mainstreaming of same-sex marriage, and Obama's "evolving"
views on the subject.
About 7 minutes.
Interview by Nick Gillespie. Camera by Jim Epstein and Joshua
Swain; edited by Swain.

Flexible, customizable, free, gay-friendly, Windows-compatible genealogy software? I just noticed that the software I'm using appears to allow only man-woman marriages. (There may be an option I've missed, but that's what it looks like for now.) So I want to know what my options are for gay-friendly genealogy software. Preferably, I would like it to be flexible enough to allow you to define any sort of relationship between people (friends, work colleagues, school buddies, neighbors, sexual partners, kindred spirits, ride the same bus, etc.) and then let you generate classic family trees or other sorts of reports.

It was started by Tara and Shelley in May 2010 after their dogs, Tindy and Sassy both required knee surgery.

Tara’s dog Tindy was diagnosed with an ACL tear which would require her to have surgery. Tindy underwent knee surgery which was a success. Tindy’s veterinarian recommended water therapy for a better recovery. Tindy was put in water therapy even though she wasn’t too excited about it at first. Video of the day: Bloomberg Spanish

NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg held a presser a few minutes ago, and it was broadcast on major media. It was unremarkable at the outset, noting it's too late to evacuate at this point, to take precautions using candles, etc. But then he decided to offer up a summary in Spanish. I want to give him props for trying, but it was so heinous that I burst out laughing. And I don't even speak Spanish. I can't imagine what that sounded like to native Spanish speakers. This is one for the ages; it's at least nice to laugh during what's a pretty tough time to laugh with Irene barreling up the Northeast corridor. Thanks @robrcb.

Bullied high schooler convinces MPAA to change ?Bully? rating to ?PG-13?

Director Lee Hirsch and The Weinstein Company have announced that the documentary ?Bully? will receive a ?PG-13? rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) after more than 500,000 people, including 35 Members of Congress and celebrities like Ellen Degeneres and Meryl Streep, joined a campaign on Change.org started by a bullied high school student.
Katy Butler, a 17 year-old student from Michigan who experienced extensive bullying when she came out as a lesbian in middle school, launched a petition on Change.org after learning that the MPAA had rejected an appeal to change the rating of "Bully" from "R" to "PG-13" so students could see the film.
Following news of the rating change, Butler issued a thank you to those who supported her campaign: ?On behalf of the more than half a million supporters who joined me on Change.org in petitioning the MPAA, I want to express how grateful I am not only to the MPAA for lowering the rating without cutting a vital scene, but to all of the people who used their voices to put a national spotlight on this movie and its mission,? said Butler.
Butler?s campaign on Change.org attracted support from major international celebrities, with Ellen DeGeneres and Anderson Cooper inviting Butler to appear on their shows and urging their viewers to support her petition. In addition, Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Demi Lovato, Randy Jackson, Kelly Ripa, Justin Bieber, Drew Brees, and several other celebrities all encouraged their fans to sign Katy?s petition or show support to ?Bully."
Butler?s petition also gained support from 35 Members of Congress, who endorsed a congressional sign-on letter issued by Rep. Mike Honda (D-California) urging the MPAA to change ?Bully?s? rating from ?R? to ?PG-13.? Leader Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand also tweeted their support for Katy's campaign to their followers on Twitter.
Butler started her petition on Change.org because she thought it was ridiculous that the "R" rating -- given for coarse, but real words used by bullies in the film -- was keeping the target audience from seeing this film: bullies and bully victims.
?The brief usage of language in this film reflects what so many kids hear each day in school when they?re being bullied," said Butler.

News: Illinois Lawsuits, Ann Curry, FCC, NOM Pride

The New York Observer offers thoughts on outing celebrities in an increasingly gay-friendly 21st century:  "...Living in the so-called ?glass closet,? [celebrities] can forestall the legitimate press inquiring after their home life while also ensuring that their orientation is hardly breaking news. It?s being basically out, without having to answer any questions."
A Cook County judge today announced that he's combining two ACLU and Lambda Legal lawsuits challenging Illinois' ban on gay marriage.
National Organization for Marriage president Brian Brown arrived in San Francisco just in time for gay pride.
The New York Times reports on gay adult film star the recent death of Erik Rhodes (pictured): "Over the last few years, he had also been the author of a harrowing (and frequently clever) Tumblr feed, on which he detailed his escapades escorting, his rampant steroid use and his stories of winding up in psychiatric wards after crystal meth binges... As the novelty of being in pornographic films wore off, Mr. Rhodes turned increasingly to the Internet, using his Tumblr feed and his Facebook page to discuss his sense of anguish. ?I feel so left out ... so alone,? he wrote in a post just weeks ago."
A gay man in the Phillipines is recovering after being stabbed 21 times.
Uganda's anti-gay government is banning 38 non-governmental organizations it accuses of "recruiting" gay people. "The NGOs are channels through which monies are channeled to (homosexuals) to recruit," said government "ethics" minister Simon Lokodo.

Alec Baldwin dropped trou on David Letterman while discussing his scuffle with a photographer.
Mitt Romney's campaign told Florida Gov. Rick Scott to "downplay" his state's economic improvement because it "clashes" with the GOP candidate's anti-Obama rhetoric.
The Supreme Court threw out FCC fines against Fox and ABC for unplanned expletives and nudity on those broadcasters' programs. It did not, however, rule on whether the FCC's decency rules and potential penalties are unconstitutional. "[SCOTUS] decided to punt on the opportunity to issue a broad ruling on the constitutionality of the FCC indecency policy. The issue will be raised again as broadcasters will continue to try to grapple with the FCC's vague and inconsistent enforcement regime," said free speech lawyer Paul Smith.
Would you take your chain-smoking multi-millionaire 26-year old lover out with your 6-year old daughter?
Robert Kirkman is best known as creator of The Walking Dead, but he has plenty of other projects worth checking out, like the comic Thief of Thieves, which will also soon be a television show, as well.
Morrissey describes rumors of his retirement as "wishful thinking." He'll be touring again this fall.
Commerce Secretary John Bryson has resigned following two car crashes doctors say were the result of seizures. "I have concluded that the seizure I suffered on June 9th could be a distraction from my performance as secretary and that our country would be better served by a change in leadership at the department," said Bryson.
Some things never change: "Bias against a Mormon presidential candidate hasn?t budged in 45 years, with 18% of Americans saying they would not vote for a well-qualified candidate who happened to be Mormon, according to a Gallup Poll released Thursday."

Barbra Streisand to Play Brooklyns Barclay Center

BARBRA STREISAND COMES HOME: Brooklyn's Favorite Daughter to Perform at Barclays Center.

The Brooklyn-born and raised, world-acclaimed superstar will perform a
concert on Thursday, October 11th, in Brooklyn at Barclays Center, the
new 19,000-seat sports and entertainment venue.

Streisand will be making a triumphant return to her native borough.
Raised in the Flatbush neighborhood and a graduate of Erasmus Hall High
School, Streisand will perform publicly for the first time in Brooklyn.

Streisand stated, "Brooklyn to me means the Loews Kings, Erasmus, the
Yeshiva I went to, the Dodgers, Prospect Park, great Chinese food. I'm
so glad I came from Brooklyn? down to earth. I guess you CAN come home
again."

"When I first thought about building an arena in Brooklyn, I always
envisioned Barbra Streisand coming home to take center-stage in her
native borough," said Barclays Center majority owner and developer Bruce
Ratner. "It's humbling and almost surreal to welcome arguably the
greatest entertainer of all-time to Barclays Center. Barbra is Brooklyn
and there's nowhere more fitting for her to perform. This will be a
night to remember."

"Barbra Streisand in Brooklyn will be a huge moment and a defining
experience for Barclays Center," said Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark.
"We are truly honored to bring Barbra full circle, to the borough where
it all started for her, just down Flatbush Avenue from her old
neighborhood. We are continuing our goal to bring the best of everything
to Barclays Center. Brooklyn, after all, deserves nothing less."

Tickets for the Streisand concert will go on sale shortly. You can sign up here for an opportunity to get exclusive access to tickets now.
Tickets will also be available through Ticketmaster or by by calling 800-745-3000. NETS All Access ticket holders will have the opportunity to purchase tickets for the concerts before the general public. Tickets will be available to the general public on May 21 at 10am EDT.

Donna Summers ACTUP Letter Becomes Public

Remember 1989?  When there was no internet. News DID NOT travel at the speed of light. People used snail mail. It was very hard to get your message out, effectively.

Donna Summer became an instant icon for the gay community
during her 1970s heyday. So when she allegedly made a number of
religion-inspired remarks about the gay community as well as HIV/AIDS
during a 1983 performance, the "Queen of Disco" faced an immediate
backlash.  But, she had no idea the backlash was going on. She was shielded by the people around her.

"It was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve," Summer was quoted as having said during the Atlantic City performance by the Village Voice, according to The Advocate.
She is said to have also noted, "I've seen the evil homosexuality come
out of you people... AIDS is the result of your sins. Now don't get me
wrong; God loves you. But not the way you are now."
Now, however, a letter of apology written by Summer to a prominent AIDS advocacy group in 1989 has emerged in its entirety for the first time via POZ Magazine's blog. In it, the singer, who died of lung cancer at 63 last month,
denies making the remarks about the gay community, but whether or not
it would've been enough to appease those sullen fans at the time it was
written is uncertain.
Why this letter was never  made public, who knows.  ACTUPs  media coordinator at the time, knew it existed. And he was able to recover it from the archives, which are now in storage. Was it suppressed from the public by ACTUP because ACTUP wanted to control this whole mishap with Summer?  No one will ever really know. But thanks  to  POZ Blogs PETER STALEY for this wonderfully insightful story.

Versace Mansion in South Beach Miami $125 Million

If you?ve been to South Beach in Miami, you?ve probably walked past the
famous Versace mansion on Ocean Drive.  If you?re not sure whether or
not you?ve seen it,  just look for a really big mansion with an observatory on its roof, nestled between the cafes, restaurants and hotels of Ocean Drive. Casa Casuarina, the Miami Beach, Fla., house once owned by late fashion designer Gianni Versace, is on the market for $125 million. This is also the home where Versace was murdered on the doorsteps.
South Beach is still seeing some record prices, and has barely been affected by the housing market issues other areas have seen with huge drops.

Known as Casa Casuarina, the 10-bedroom, 11-bathroom house overlooks the ocean. Gianni  Versace bought the home and its adjacent lot in 1992 for just under $10 million and then invested another $33 million in the property, adding a 6,100-square-foot south wing, a 54-foot-long mosaic-tiled pool lined with 24-karat gold, a mosaic-covered courtyard and frescoes on the home's walls and ceilings.Gianni did an amazing job designing every inch of the home with his unique flair for detail and design!   He was killed outside the home in July 1997.

Peter Loftin, a telecom entrepreneur, purchased the property in 2000 for mere  $20 million. Which was a steal! Considering Versace  had invested over $50 million. After using it as a residence for several years, Mr. Loftin turned the home into a boutique hotel with a restaurant and opened it in late 2009 as the Villa by Barton G. While it was a boutique hotel, rooms ran as high as $18,000 per night. They would also sometimes rent out the home  for big parties.

"This is an iconic oasis for the rich-and-famous that sits in the
middle of South Beach," Loftin said in a statement. "It's a
one-of-a-kind property, created by a genius; that is a piece of art, and
a piece of history."
Added real estate agent Jill Eber in statement: "The Casa Casuarina is the crown jewel of luxury real estate."
The house was built in 1930 by architect, philanthropist,
author and political reformer Alden Freeman, and its design was inspired
by the oldest existing house in the Western Hemisphere, the "Alcazar de
Colon" in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the real estate firm said.Coldwell Banker says Loftin preserved and maintained all of Versace's design elements.

Erasure's "A Little Respect" in the eighties quickly became an iconic song for the gay community and has been adopted as one of our most played anthems (especially in the RVT). "

A Little Respect" comes with a movie style video which was inspired by the bullying incidents occurring recently in the USA. Andy Bell from Erasure felt the need to act - "I am honored and moved beyond words to serve as an Ambassador to the The Hetrick-Martin Institute. Every opportunity we have to spread tolerance and compassion must be seized and I will take special pride in doing so on HMI's behalf."

OXD Occupy The Disco with David Morales

(OXD), a New York City based movement, was  created by three music lovers, Ru Bhatt, Josh Appelbaum, and Tadeu Magalhes.
MISSION  OXD:

It was through music and nightlife that gay people in New York City,
for decades, changed concepts, gained supporters, and helped others be
happy with who they are all over the world. Our music re-shaped the mainstream, pushed boundaries, united our community, and made room for the future.
Mainstream music has now adopted much of our sound. Nightclub
promoters and DJs are pushed to only give us that which is familiar,
that which is safe. As such, many members of our community have lost the
ability to question, to experience the unknown. We must uphold our
legacy as cultural leaders in society and continue to evolve.
Our goal is simple: to re-unite the gay community in NYC through
music. To create rich and fun experiences. To dance. To feel free. To
move beyond what?s familiar. To reclaim our role as tastemakers. We want
to go further than what we already know and be surprised with new,
exciting music. And we will work to bring this back.
This is our call: Occupy The Disco.

There are now parties happening in NY which you can find on their blog -
see also OCCUPY THE DISCO on FACEBOOK

PLUS , WATCH THE VIDEO by Grammy award-winning producer and DJ David Morales  with former Moloko chanteuse and Irish disco diva, Risn Murphy. Morales is
famous for his days DJing at Paradise Garage, Stereo and Ministry of
Sound, as well as his remixes of pop songs from the likes of Mariah Carey, Kylie Minogue, and more. Creating a veritable "dream team" of sorts, Murphy's vocals smoothly complement Morales' robust production. The song's lyrics (and video)
elicit images of times past; mourning the end of many different "golden
eras", while leaving it open to the listener to interpret which era is
in question. While we think the original is great, we prefer this remix
as Morales finishes it off with his signature disco beat.

Wedding Style Advice from 'Project Runway' All-Star Mila Hermanovski

When my partner and I announced our engagement and began telling friends and family that we were getting married, one of the most frequent questions we got was: What are you going to wear?

Seriously?!? What we were going to wear?

It was 1999 and I was more preoccupied with finding a location for the ceremony and vendors who didn't hang up on me; wondering who would officiate since the Methodist minister who baptized me said No; and, hoping that our families would actually attend the ceremony.

Kate McKinnon is ****ing Hilarious!

The comical genius Kate McKinnon is at it again--making us laugh our asses off. Recently, she was part of a skit about the BP oil spill (with the UBC Theater). The skit made its way to the Rachel Maddow Show. If you haven't seen it, you must! Go Kate! Keep on keeping on. We need humor in light of the unstoppable awfulness that is happening down south.

NEWS: A Little Superman, A Lot Of Science, And One Unpopular Politician

Watch Grindr CEO Joel Simkhai talk biz on Bloomberg Television, AFTER THE JUMP ...
 "Superman: Forged By Bullies!"
Complicated memories of a father murdered mid-transition:

?I was talking with Jean tonight about Dad,? [said my sister Bridgette]. Jean was one of her transgender customers. ?And Jean said, ?Maybe you were never meant to celebrate Father?s Day, because your dad was always meant to be a woman.?? She looked at me as though this might be a consolation, but I was having none of it.
?That?s absurd!? I said, because I believe our dad was a man through and through. He was 6-foot-7. He was lanky, deep-voiced. I often described his personality as somewhere between Anthony Bourdain and Howard Stern. What was most damning, in my mind, was how physically abusive he was to my mother and me. Bridgette missed much of this. She was 5 when I went into foster care at 15. The court made my dad take anger management classes after that. ?He was always talking about how he hated women,? I said. ?If that?s the case, how could he have really been one??

Russell Pearce, author of Arizona's "papers please!" law, can't find a place to hold fundraiser; accuses Arizonans of trying to "stifle" his candidacy:

The fundraising event was originally planned to be held at Macayo?s restaurant in Phoenix, but the plan was scuttled by activist Dee Dee Garcia Blase of Arizona?s Tequila Party, a conservative Latino group formed in reaction to the deportation-happy Tea Party. Garcia Blase organized a protest to be held outside the restaurant during the event and contacted Macayo?s corporate offices, which led the restaurant to cancel the event on Thursday morning.
By midday Thursday, Pearce?s campaign had emailed supporters announcing a second location, Oaxaca Restorante Y Cantina in downtown Phoenix. However, when Garcia Blase contacted Oaxaca?s management, the event was canceled within hours.
Oaxaca manager Joseph Aguayo told the Capital Times that Pearce?s campaign had booked the event under a false name. When Garcia Blase told him who the event was for, Aguayo barred the group from the restaurant. ?We don?t need that,? he said, ?We want to keep the support of our Latino community.?
Finally, Pearce attempted to gain access to the library of Phoenix?s Central High School, a request that was denied 30 minutes before Pearce?s guests and supporters were due to arrive. Phoenix Union High School District Superintendent Kent Scribner said that the event, with the added concerns of protesters and security, posed a logistical nightmare for school officials.
?Given the late notice of this request and the anticipated turnout, we are unable to host it,? Scribner said.

GLAAD finds fewer gay characters on network TV

(New York) The number of gay and bisexual characters on scripted broadcast network TV has dipped slightly this season to 19 out of nearly 650 roles, according to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

The 16th annual "Where We Are on TV" report released Wednesday by GLAAD found that 2.9 percent of actors appearing regularly on prime-time network drama and comedy series in the 2011-12 season will portray gay, lesbian or bisexual characters.

That's down from 3 percent in the 2009-10 season and 3.9 percent last season, when there were 23 out of a total of nearly 600 roles.

The 2008-09 season saw an increased representation of 2.6 percent.

Only five of the 19 gay and lesbian characters this season are nonwhite, GLAAD found.

Using information provided by ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and CW, the group reviewed 91 scripted series announced to air this season.

Among broadcast series with gay and bisexual characters, GLAAD cited CBS' "The Good Wife," the CW's "Ringer" and NBC's "The Playboy Club." Comedies include ABC's "Modern Family" and Fox's "Glee."

Fox leads the networks in gay representation, with eight regular characters out of a total of 117.

The number of gay and bisexual characters on cable networks has also fallen slightly, from 35 last season to 29 in the upcoming season.

As it did last year, HBO has the greatest number of gay and bisexual characters, with 11 regular and recurring characters. Showtime is close behind with 10.

The HBO drama "True Blood" remains among the most inclusive series on television, featuring six characters, tied with the Showtime series "Shameless," the group found.

Some of TV's most popular shows "weave story lines about gay and lesbian characters into the fabric of the show," said GLAAD acting President Mike Thompson. "Americans expect to see the diversity of our country represented in their favorite programs, and that includes gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people."
