Colorado Senate Passes Civil Unions Bill

The Colorado Senate passed a comprehensive civil unions bill by a 23 to 12 vote Wednesday, sending the bill to the House of Representatives.SB 127, would allow both gay and straight couples to enter into civil unions, giving couples all of the protections of marriage under state law.Three Republican senators voted in support of the bill. One of the three legislators, Sen. Jean White, delivered a speech that brought some to tears. According to reports, White said the easy thing to do would have been to stay in the shadows, vote for the bill, and not say anything, but she said she has a niece and a nephew she has "loved since they were born? who are gay. Leather labors of love
All over the country leather people are competing for local titles so that they may represent their communities at home and also at international contests next year. Producing a contest is an expensive and time consuming labor of love but the leather women of San Diego have found an ingenious way to raise funds and put a little camp into a community that sometimes takes itself way too seriously. Next Saturday, October 9th is the thirteenth annual Butch Revue which will benefit the charities of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and SD Leather Pride. Former Ms. World Leather and producer of Ms San Diego Leather, Annie Romano is the founder of the Butch Revue which was initially a fundraiser for her travel fund when she ran for IMsL in 1998 during her reign a…

Prop 8 backers target trial judge in urging appeal

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Backers of California’s same-sex marriage ban urged a federal appeals court to overturn the trial judge who struck down Proposition 8 by arguing late Friday that his consideration of evidence was “egregiously selective and one-sided.”

In written arguments to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, lawyers for the ban’s sponsors alleged that Chief U.S. Judge Vaughn Walker “quite willfully” disregarded a 1972 U.S. Supreme Court precedent and other relevant information when he decided the voter-approved measure was an unconstitutional violation of gay Californians’ civil rights.

“The district court based its findings almost exclusively on an uncritical acceptance of the evidence submi…

San Diego lesbians rock!

There was a time in San Diego’s rich history when lesbians were not as visible or held in the same esteem in the GLBT community as they are now. At times discounted and thought to be too small a group to warrant advertising dollars, they were also considered too different from gay men to be influential or to hold any positions of power. This was also a time when there was little or no nightlife catering for lesbians and the few lesbian clubs out there had come and gone. They simply could not compete with the gay bars and the numbers that they attracted. Going beyond nightlife there were few resources for lesbians or places that lesbians could gather, socialize, have fun and be in the majority.

Fast forward and it is apparent that this has really chang…

Web series review: Rose By Any Other Name

A lot of the discourse on the internet (which, frankly, is where I get most of my non-academic discourse) when it comes to bisexuality centers around biphobia, bisexual erasure and how non-supportive the gay and lesbian communities supposedly are.

Maybe this is just me, but I very rarely feel like this describes a situation I find myself in on a regular basis.

What it does create, I think, is a lot of negativity. Add to this the discussion I keep seeing crop up about whether the word ‘bisexual’ implies binarism and before you know it, being bisexual is more of a heavily debated political standpoint than a part of everyday life. And I admit I do like identity politics sometimes. I just only like it when it can be a little fun, too. That is, unless something terrible happens and/or someone gets all offensive, just to include this caveat, but for the most part, I don’t understand why everyone’s so serious. Perhaps I feel this way because I’ve heard more crap and hurtful things about liking girls than about being bi specifically, and all of this came from straight people.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who wants to get away from all this negativity sometimes. That’s why the American Institute of Bisexuality created an It Gets Better video, and why some people, like bisexual activist and director Kyle Schickner, develop films and web series that center around bisexuality in a fun and light-hearted way. Kyle Schickner is the founder of FenceSitter Films, that was founded on “the belief that films don’t need straight white men as heroes in order to be successful and entertaining”. Right on.

Most recently, FenceSitter Films produced the web series Rose By Any Other Name, that, back in 2009, got posted directly to YouTube. With its second season on the way, the entire first season is up to rent for $3,99 (€2,83) for 24 hours. The second season, which premieres June 1st, will not go up on YouTube for free, which is completely understandable, although a bit of a shame for those of us without PayPal accounts.

The first time I saw the web series was two years ago, and when I watched it again for this article, it was better than I remembered. Rose (Stephanie Reibel), a lesbian who works at the LGBT community center, meets Anthony (Kyle Schickner himself), a straight man who works in software, while waiting in line for Prince concert tickets. When she asks him out, everything gets complicated really fast. Anthony’s friends at the office give him a 101 on how to date a lesbian and one of Rose’s friends fumigates her apartment to get rid of all the ‘negative male energy’. Rose By Any Other Name is rife with funny quotes, especially from Anthony and Rose’s crazy friends (“If you have to buy her something, buy her flannel”, or “Rose, you have to be a lesbian.”)

I also love the interaction between Anthony’s friend Chris (Steph Davis) and Rose’s friend Veronica (Fay Wolf). I don’t think you need to be a lesbian for this kind of friendships with men, because I can totally recognize me and some of my guy friends in this.
<!--pagebreak-->

Despite the hilarious, almost panicky conversations that make up most of the season, in the end it does get a bit serious after all. When Rose mentions she thinks she might be bisexual, even previously supportive Veronica switches positions. “When you tell someone you’re a lesbian it brings up certain connotations. It’s a stance. What kind of stance is bisexual?” she says. To which I would argue that the word ‘bisexual’ comes with a lot of connotations as well.

Now we’re back at the heavy political identity questions we were at in the first few paragraphs of this post. But here, it isn’t brought on by endless online debate, but by a storyline in a comedy. (Maybe my main problem is with endless online debate.) The fact that Rose By Any Other Name is a comedy, weighs in with how we perceive even these in essence quite offending comments by Rose’s friends. We know that the web series is taking on serious issues in a not-so-serious way, and it’s not like anything before those last scenes was very politically correct if it would have been presented in a different context.

All I’m worried about is if Rose and Anthony can stay together even while yielding so much opposition. My secret wish for the second season is however altogether unrelated to Rose and Anthony or the seemingly complicated inner workings of the bisexual mind: I want Veronica to get a girlfriend, because she seems so cute and lonesome. I would offer myself for this position, but she lives on the West Coast. And, you know, she’s fictional.

While you’re waiting for Rose By Any Other Name’s second season, you can take a look at the FenceSitter Films website, the trailer for the first season below, or the first episode, which is still on YouTube in its entirety.

Same-sex Split

My same-sex partner and I have separated (to my shock and opposition) after a few years of hard financial times. While I am holding out hope that she will come to her senses, I need help deciding on what to do (especially regarding our house) in case we can't resolve our issues. We've been together for over 5 years. She makes a professional salary, and while I have held a para-professional position throughout our relationship, burger-flippers make more than me. Over the last 3 years, I have gone back to school to get a MLIS degree in order to qualify for higher paying jobs. And then the economy collapsed. And then library funding was slashed. Plus, my library's working environment has been contentious at best. Faculty cry on a weekly, sometimes daily basis. But, it's pretty much the only game in town. Which is one of the problems - other than employment, this town is pretty rad. I have a great community. Something I've been searching for my whole life. And it's completely intertwined with the life I built with my partner. I feel shattered by this because it's as if the culmination of 5 years of work is just within reach, but about to be smacked away.

It's been a rough year, and I know it's taken a toll on her. I have taken other steps to improve our situation. I've been going to therapy, and some sessions in the beginning (4 months ago) she attended with me. When questioned, she said 100% she wanted to stay in the relationship, she loved me, etc. My anxious, depressive mood (brought on by lack of opportunity in my field, both locally and globally) has significantly improved. I'm not bringing home my work issues anymore. I have had some big-time interviews. And now, four months later, her tune has changed. She says she can't do it anymore and that we're done. While she has come with me for a few more sessions to my therapist, she refuses to go to a couples counselor. I know she is stubborn and don't expect her to change her mind any time soon (even though I hope she does). She claims she still cares for me and this is very unusual behavior for her. I don't know how long I should wait to see if she has second thoughts.

I have been staying in the house, and she with friends. This is not sustainable in the long run. She bought the house before we met, but I came on as co-owner 3 years after plunking down a chunk of money. Since then, we have paid the mortgage equally, and split the cost of significant property improvements (remodeling and outbuilding). There have been other improvements to the house that may not have been as equal (like roof, furnace, water heater, electrical improvements), but I have also put in a LOT of sweat equity. Currently at my salary, there is no way I could carry the mortgage myself. However, with the potential new faculty-level jobs that would double my salary I would be able to carry the mortgage. I just have to wait a little bit (prob 2-3 months) to find out if I will be getting them. Regardless, I have no savings to buy her out. Another part of me thinks it would be wise to have the opposite happen. But if this is the case, how would I go about calculating a fair buyout?

So to sum up the questions:
1. Advice regarding how long I should wait to see if she's just having a lash-out flip-out.
2. Short-term residence
3. Long term what to do with the house.

U.S. Department of State releases statement about freedom of assembly in Russia

It took quite a while after Dan Choi, Andy Thayer and a team of international activists were arrested for protesting the cancellation of Moscow Pride for our government to issue a statement, but here it is. U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE Office of the Spokesman For Immediate Release May 29, 2011 2011/855 STATEMENT BY MARK TONER, DEPUTY SPOKESPERSON Concern about Freedom of Assembly in Russia We note with concern that in Moscow on Saturday, May 28, a peaceable demonstration of Russians advocating for the rights of gays and lesbians, joined by international supporters, was forcefully disrupted by counter-protesters, and that Russian security forces then detained people from both groups, including American citizens. Some protestors were seriously injured according to media reports. Freedom of assembly is a fundamental right all members of the OSCE committed to, including in the Moscow declaration and as recently as the Astana summit. As nationwide legislative elections approach, constraints on the ability of Russian citizens peacefully to gather and express their views will be closely watched in evaluating the integrity of the electoral process.  We call on Russian authorities to work with municipal officials to find better ways to safeguard these fundamental freedoms. ###John @ Americablog has quite a bit to say about the statement, including the fact that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has yet to comment. UPDATE: Dan Choi's response to the statement...

And got RAVE REVIEWS! Based on the novel penned by Andy Zeffer, this film explores the ups and down, and trials and tribulations of trying to make it in Hollywood. What would you do to survive and achieve your ultimate dream?  Directed by Casper Andreas, the film stars Matthew Ludwinski as ?Adam,? a Hollywood newbie looking to get his start in the world of lights?camera?action. We recently caught up with Matthew to talk about his starring role, the steamy sex scenes and working with Casper Andreas.  In a recent interview, Matthew  says, "I knew that Casper had the rights to the book long before he cast me as the lead, so I bought and read the book before Casper had even finished the script.  After reading it, I knew it was the perfect part for me.  I was dying to play that role!  It's fun to imagine oneself in various tragic situations, and this particular situation involves a sexy combination of porn, prostitution and Hollywood romance.  Getting to play that role let me live in that world for a bit without any of the pesky consequences.""
I know what it's like to feel objectified.  I know what it's like to feel used.  I know what it's like to feel desperate.  And every actor has thought at some point about the casting couch, and has had the thought, "I wonder if it is possible to sleep my way to the top?"  But really his whole journey from arriving to Hollywood bright and excited to the process of his disillusionment?I?ve experienced all of that.  I think most actors have."
When asked -  What was it like working with director Casper Andreas?
"Casper and I were already friendly from working together on his film, "Between Love & Goodbye  ," a few years ago.  I knew we liked each other and would get along.  We became good friends working on this movie.  It made coming to work everyday a blast!  I also came to ADORE the two other leads, Allison Lane and Michael Medico.  Working with people you like is such a joy.  I couldn't wait to start each day."

DOMA (Nearly) DOA

Some
good news from the White House:

In a major reversal, the Obama administration has notified
Congress that it will no longer defend the federal law that says
marriage can exist only between a man and a woman.
Attorney General Eric Holder says he has recommended, and the
president has agreed, that the law unconstitutionally discriminates
against same-sex couples who are legally married but whose status
is not recognized by the federal government.
"Given a number of factors, including a documented history of
discrimination," Holder wrote in a statement, the administration
has concluded that classifications based on sexual orientation must
be subject to a higher constitutional standard than ordinary laws.
And the federal Defense of Marriage Act does not meet that test, he
says.

The law is still in effect, but probably lost whatever chance it
had of surviving a legal challenge. You can read Holder's letter

here.
Reason on DOMA
here, including this
piece from 1996 by Nick Gillespie. Excerpt:

It is a misguided attempt to define for all time an institution
that is constantly, if slowly, evolving. Its supporters may think
they can stop social evolution in its tracks and enforce a singular
vision of the good society. But such people misunderstand the very
nature of a free society and its dependence on choice and change.
The Defense of Marriage Act may well have put off state recognition
of same-sex marriage for the time being, but such laws can do
precious little to keep things as they are. There can be little
doubt that, ultimately, the government will be following IBM's
lead, even as IBM has followed its employees'.

House Adopts 2012 Defense Authorization Bill and its Anti-Gay 'DADT' and DOMA-Related Amendments

The U.S. House yesterday adopted  the fiscal year 2012 defense authorization bill by a 322-96 along with several anti-gay provisions intended to affect implementation of repeal of the military's gay ban and prevent same-sex marriages from taking place within military facilities and by military chaplains.
Read about the amendments, which advocates do not expect to succeed in the net-yet-introduced Senate version of the bill, here.
The Washington Blade adds this interesting bit:
Informed sources said House Democratic leaders offered those who worked last year to repeal ?Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell? repeal the opportunity for an amendment on the floor to eliminate the language in the defense authorization bill related to certification expansion.
However, the five major repeal organizations ? the Human Rights Campaign, Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, Third Way, Servicemembers United and the Center for American Progress ? agreed to decline the opportunity for the amendment.
According to sources, repeal advocates believed such a amendment would likely fail and could pick up support from moderate House Democrats. A defeat on the House floor, advocates believed, would increase the chances of the Senate adopting the certification expansion language.
Conservative organizations are vowing to sue unless the Senate adopts similar measures, the WaPo reports:
Conservative legal activists and Christian leaders said Thursday that they will sue on behalf of military chaplains if the Senate does not pass a Republican version of the annual Pentagon policy bill that includes language barring Defense Department employees from participating in same-sex marriage ceremonies.
**
Austin Nimocks, senior counsel with the Alliance Defense Fund, said his conservative legal organization would sue all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary to ensure that federal law ? instead of the Pentagon personnel policy ? represents the group?s position.
?If the Senate does not follow the House and protect chaplains and service members, we have no doubt that legal action will be required,? Nimocks said Thursday at a news conference on Capitol Hill.
Said Alexander Nicholson, Executive Director of Servicemembers United and a former Army Interrogator who was discharged under DADT: ?The passage of the defense authorization bill with these hostile amendments included comes as no surprise, and it should not become a cause for concern as long as our allies in the Senate and the President all stand strong and refuse to support a defense bill containing these amendments. These amendments were nothing short of a waste of time by lawmakers who were sent to Washington to do serious business and a waste of taxpayer money. The Pentagon, the President, and the American people have made it abundantly clear ? we are moving forward and building a stronger military free of unnecessary discrimination.?
Said Servicemembers Legal Defense Network executive director Aubrey Sarvis in a statement: "The opposition may well believe they won the day in the House, simply outnumbering repeal advocates. But this fight is far from over. We must look to repeal supporters in the Senate, where the defense bill will be taken up next and where we are better positioned than in the House. We need to beat back this harmful language and make sure it does not survive in conference committee."

Overblown Buffa: There is a little something for everyone in WNO's season-closing Don Pasquale, but no home run

Music:
It's a shame the Washington National Opera didn't end its season with the brooding intensity of the memorable Iphigénie en Tauride instead of the determined but unenlightened Don Pasquale, which corners one rather like the party guest who insists on describing, between bouts of hilarity, last night's episode of something you would never want to see.

Though Pasquale was no doubt imagined as a witty confection upon which to launch the long summer break, in reality it is another example of the unevenness that has dogged recent seasons. And although Maestro Domingo may not have known his date of departure as general director of the WNO when this season was set, it is also hard not to wish he had closed it out with his voice instead of his baton. Still, for those in need of a final fix before the break, at least it is Donizetti. And with its acrobatic trills, melodic arias and pleasing ensembles, there is something for nearly every ear.
Of course, being an opera buffa -- the 18th century equivalent of a sitcom -- it goes without saying that there is as much silliness here as there is drama. After the elderly but thoroughly full-of-himself Pasquale threatens to disinherit his nephew Ernesto by finding himself a bride and a new heir, the old man's doctor, Malatesta, decides to teach him a lesson. Thus begins a deception in which Ernesto's girlfriend Norina lures Pasquale into a sham marriage from hell. Pasquale emerges humbled and all too ready to give his blessing to Ernesto and Norina.
Considered a fine example of the comic operatic tradition, there are few surprises here other than the slightly sadistic degree to which Donizetti has Norina goad Pasquale. Whether it is a comment on the ''real'' wives women may become after the vows or whether it is all about Pasquale's just desserts, it leads to a certain poignancy not normally found in the genre.
Still, this texture aside, the opera keeps to formula and thus the whole game is about making it fresh for a modern audience. But how, and for which audience? Unfortunately, director Leon Major opts for the lowest common denominator ensuring that every moment, whether gaff or gasp, is played out with the dumbed-down obviousness of mainstream musical theater. Whether it is Ernesto falling about with heart-sickness or Norina marching around like a pretend soldier, it is all too, too much. As always, less is more, even with farce.
And yet, having said all that, Major is capable of subtlety – he just confines it to the smaller details instead of the whole. Don Pasquale's elaborate, hygienically challenged morning ritual, and the actions of the mute but highly ironic servants are full of a drier brand of humor. It is in these small moments that Leon offers the kind of silent but amusing commentary that brightens a comedy in the same way that heavy-handedness deadens it. Too bad he keeps it on such a tight leash.
DON PASQUALE To May 27 Washington National Opera Kennedy Center Opera House $55-$300 202-467-4600 kennedy-center.org
Still, making of the most of these smaller moments, James Morris brings much presence to his Don Pasquale and some excellent, understated, comic timing. But our sense of this overbearing buffoon is seriously dampened by the fact that Morris's captivating bass-baritone is often beneath the orchestra. Known for his Wagnerian repertoire, it's intriguing to see Morris challenge himself, but frustrating that the issue remained unaddressed.
Writing it large for Leon and thus overplaying it, soprano Ekaterina Siurina seems most at home here. Her Norina is insuppressibly cheerful and determined, but with all that joie de vivre it's hard to see the heart and soul in this woman. When it finally appears, it's in the sweetness of Siurina's tone and the delicate magic of her vocal runs, not the saccharine smiles.
With such a one-dimensional Norina it is also difficult to understand Ernesto's all-consuming passion and, as such, it isn't all that surprising that tenor Antonio Gandia's efforts seem more at-large than specific to his leading lady. A high, tight tenor, Gandia approached piercing at times, but opens with surprising dimension and color in his top notes. As Doctor Malatesta, baritone Dwayne Croft offers a certain cohesion to the goings-on, a modicum of flair, and some expressive singing.
Perhaps exceptionally tasked in his final months with the WNO, conductor Placido Domingo did not have the orchestra quite where it needed to be, even if all was, as always, imbued with his enduring musicality.
And thus a season and an era end with more of a sigh than a whizz-bang. But then again, with an art as old and enduring as opera, it pays to take the long view. ...more

Obama, Gay Marriage, and Executive Power

As Matt Welch noted
yesterday, the Obama administration has announced it will no longer
defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court.
According to Attorney General Eric Holder, ?the President and
[the Attorney General] have concluded that classifications based on
sexual orientation warrant heightened scrutiny and that, as applied
to same-sex couples legally married under state law then, from that
perspective, there is no reasonable defense of DOMA.?
At the Volokh Conspiracy, George Washington University law
professor Orin Kerr wonders if this action
sets a dangerous precedent for the expansion of executive
power:

By taking that position, the Obama Administration has moved the
goalposts of the usual role of the Executive branch in defending
statutes. Instead of requiring DOJ to defend the constitutionality
of all federal statutes if it has a reasonable basis to do so, the
new approach invests within DOJ a power to conduct an independent
constitutional review of the issues, to decide the main issues in
the case ? in this case, the degree of scrutiny for gay rights
issues ? and then, upon deciding the main issue, to decide if there
is a reasonable basis for arguing the other side. If you take that
view, the Executive Branch essentially has the power to decide what
legislation it will defend based on whatever views of the
Constitution are popular or associated with that Administration. It
changes the role of the Executive branch in defending litigation
from the traditional dutiful servant of Congress to major
institutional player with a great deal of discretion.
If that approach becomes widely adopted, then it would seem to
bring a considerable power shift to the Executive Branch. Here?s
what I fear will happen. If Congress passes legislation on a
largely party-line vote, the losing side just has to fashion some
constitutional theories for why the legislation is unconstitutional
and then wait for its side to win the Presidency. As soon as its
side wins the Presidency, activists on its side can file
constitutional challenges based on the theories; the Executive
branch can adopt the theories and conclude that, based on the
theories, the legislation is unconstitutional; and then the
challenges to the legislation will go undefended. Winning the
Presidency will come with a great deal of power to decide what
legislation to defend, increasing Executive branch power at the
expense of Congress?s power. Again, it will be a power grab
disguised as academic constitutional interpretation.

Study Shows Record Majority of New Yorkers Support Marriage Equality

A new Quinnipiac study shows that a majority of New Yorkers statewide support full marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples, by the largest margin ever of 56 percent to 37 percent opposed. This is an increase from 2009?s record of 51 percent who supported marriage. ?Gov. Cuomo didn?t make a big issue of same-sex marriage in his State of the State speech, but he said he was for it and so are most New Yorkers,? pointed out poll director Maurice Carroll. Detailed results included 69% of Democrats and 55% of independent voters who supported marriage. In the city, 55% of all voters support marriage equality. ?This is the last vestige of institutionalized bigotry that?s left in this country and we need to get rid of it,? commented Robert Kennedy Jr. in a video. Governor Andrew Cuomo has said that he plans to push for marriage equality legislation.Related Media Coverage:New York Daily News ? Sunday Worship - with Kellan Lutz

Sunday is a time for worship -  and since I don't believe in organized religion or church, our Sunday Worship consists of paying tribute to HOT MEN.Kellan Lutz is NOT gay -  but man, that is one hot vampire that could suck me dry! I'm just sayin!(he is currently available, and would love to tie the knot with the right girl one day.)
Perhaps best known as Emmett Cullen from the Twilight sries -  Kellan has a couple new films coming out, which are a big departure from Twilight. In ?Love Wedding Marriage,?  (out in late June/early July)  Lutz plays a ?normal guy? for once, so when we caught up with him at the film?s premiere, we had to ask how it felt to tackle a real-life character versus an undead one, as well as what new side of Lutz we?ll see in the rom-com.
?You see more of the normal guy side [of me] I guess,? Lutz told MTV News. ?My character, Charlie, struggles with being a newlywed husband and the marital bliss of all that, and hoping he?ll get more and get some fun action,? he explained with a grin. ?And his wife [Moore] is kind of preoccupied, trying to save her parents? marriage and he gets frustrated, as most males do.?You can also see him in "A Warriors Heart"  out later this year.  And also in "The Killing Game" with Samuel L. Jackson.
The Killing Game centers on a young man (Lutz) who is kidnapped and forced into the savage world of a modern gladiator arena, (sounds like a skin flick!)  where men fight to the death for entertainment of the online masses. Jackson orchestrates the games, overseeing them from his computer lair with the help of twin ladies who see to his every desire.

Not as hard as coming out, but still not easy

[Queer-filter] How do you cope with the ambient heterosexism of everyday life? I've been out for years and am lucky to have progressive friends and family and live in a progressive city. I don't have to deal with much overt homophobia. But...it still seems like there's an occasion every couple of days when I'm reminded that I don't actually have the rights that straight people have and that some people think that my intimate relationships are wrong or offensive. I feel like it puts me at a distance from other people sometimes, because I start to retreat to protect myself, and I don't like that.

In case some recent examples would help:
- an older friend of my family implied that I shouldn't have kids because it wouldn't be fair to them to be raised by a gay parent
- a dear friend, who's totally pro-gay, posted on facebook about how happy she is to be "married filing jointly" this year. I know that wasn't remotely intended to hurt anyone, but it reminds me that as long as DOMA stands, that's something I wouldn't be allowed to do
- I was getting to know new work contacts the other day and a moment came up when I would normally have mentioned my ex-girlfriend (explaining why I was familiar with a topic of conversation that she had worked on), but I chose not to in case it would make the other people uncomfortable, esp. since I knew one was an ex-Marine
- when I'm in a relationship, it seems like we always get lots of stares for holding hands and mild PDA. (I don't think I read as especially gay unless I'm obviously part of a couple, so being with a girlfriend always makes me feel a little bit like I was passing the rest of the time, and not realizing how others really felt about gay people because they didn't know I was gay.)

I know these examples are all at different levels of seriousness. But they kind of all accumulate. To the point where I hold myself at a little bit of a distance a lot of the time out of worry that straight people will subtly reject me or just not understand me. I know most people don't mean to. And it gets exhausting to constantly be on alert to how people are reading me and reacting to me. Should I just stop worrying about it? (Assuming I'm not in any physical danger.) How do you deal with this kind of stress? How do you deal with the constant question of whether to come out, and even when you're out, whether to downplay your sexual orientation or be more open and vocal about it?

I'm not so much looking for advice on how to handle the particular examples I described as thoughts on how to generally approach being queer in a society with a lot of heterosexism. I've read a little bit about covering and a little bit about minority stress. I think those ideas are both on point and I'd love any reading suggestions you have in those areas, or any other reading suggestions or personal experiences you could share. I have lots of queer friends, but we don't talk about this much. It seems like we often all try to pretend that we're just fine.

NY Senator Alesi: Don't Assume I Went to Gay Rights Dinner Because I Support Gay Rights

This morning I reported that some folks were hopeful because New York Republican Senator James Alesi, who was a (reportedly agonized) "no" vote on marriage equality legislation last time it was introduced, had attended a Rochester benefit for LGBT rights group Empire State Pride Agenda.
Well, Alesi apparently doesn't want to create too much expectation, explaining to Politics on the Hudson that people shouldn't read anything into his presence there:
?These are all my constituents and there is absolutely no way anyone can create a barricade for me when it comes to my constituents,? Alesi said outside the Senate chambers today. ?It?s me doing my job.?
Alesi has been heavily lobbied by both sides of the issue, and confirmed that he was contacted by phone recently by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is advocating for the measure?s adoption. But Alesi said his talk with Cuomo was brief, saying he asked the governor for a face-to-face meeting.
Alesi remains undeclared on where he'll vote this time around.

Michigan Will Provide Benefits to All Domestic Partners of State Employees

This Wednesday, the Michigan Civil Service Commission voted to extend health benefits to domestic partners of state employees. Domestic partner, as defined by the agreement, includes all live-in boyfriends and girlfriends of state workers, regardless of sexual orientation. The extension of benefits will not take effect until October. The issue had been reviewed under Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm?s administration, but was stalled by legal issues regarding wording. While current Governor Richard D. Snyder (R) questions the cost of the decision, given Michigan?s challenging budget this year, many are relieved by the agreement. Penny Gardner, president of a local LGBT advocacy group, called the decision ?a great breakthrough.? Gardner is an employee of Michigan State University, which offers similar benefits approved by the state, though her partner does not receive them because Gardner works part-time. In solidarity with state workers, Gardner said, "I know what it?s like having to make choices others don't have to make." Watch: Emotional Speech, Aftermath Of House Vote In Minnesota

There were many emotional speeches from various members of the Minnesotan House of Representatives during last night's debate on the state's same-sex marriage amendment.
John Kriesel, a Republican and Iraqi war vet who lost the use of both of his legs, gave one of the night's most moving speeches against voting for the measure. Said Kriesel amid chants of protesters in the rotunda of the Capitol outside of the chamber: "This amendment doesn't represent what I went to fight for. This doesn't represent that. Hear that out there? That's the America I fought for, and I'm proud of that."

Virginia State Board of Social Services Votes Against Adoption Policy Changes

On Wednesday, the Virginia State Board of Social Services voted 7 to 2 to reject proposed policy changes that would protect prospective parents from discrimination by adoption agencies. The changes would have prohibited all adoption agencies, including faith-based organizations, from discriminating against adopters based on sexual orientation, gender, age, religion, political beliefs, disability and family status. The only discrimination protections currently in place are for national origin, race and color. According to the Family Equality Council, about 3,330 lesbian and gay couples are raising 6,700 children in Virginia, most of whom were adopted in the state. Why the Evil Koch Bros. Must be Stopped: They Support Drug Legalization, Gay Marriage, Reduced Defense Spending.

If you're interested in complicating dumb media narratives and
blowing the minds of some of your leftard friends, here's a
spirited posting at Reddit by
someone with the handle epistemicfail:

The KOCH brothers must be stopped. They gave $40K to Scott
Walker, the MAX allowed by state law. That's small potatoes
compared to the $100+ million they give to other organizations.
These organizations will terrify you. If the anti-union thing
weren't enough, here are bigger and better reasons to stop the evil
Kochs. They are trying to:

decriminalize drugs,
legalize gay marriage,
repeal the Patriot Act,
end the police state,
cut defense spending.

Who hates the police? Only the criminals using drugs, amirite?
We need the Patriot Act to allow government to go through our
emails and tap our phones to catch people who smoke marijuana and
put them in prison. Oh, it's also good for terrorists.
Wikipedia shows Koch Family Foundations supporting causes
like:

CATO Institute
Reason Foundation
cancer research
ballet (because seriously: FUCK. THAT. SHIT.) ...

If there's one thing I know about billionaires, it's that they
only care about money. Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and George Soros.
They aren't fooling me. Bill Gates isn't fooling me with his
vaccination campaign in Africa. He's just trying to make African
children live longer so they will buy more copies of Windows. Wow.
Not even trying to hide it.
Now, I don't know why the KOCH brothers want gay people to have
the right to marry. Everybody knows marriage is for a man and a
woman. Even Obama said that. Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve
amirite? I haven't figured out the angle. Maybe it's like this:

legalize drugs
legalize gay marriage
sell drugs and oil to gays
????
PROFIT$$$

I don't know exactly how it would work, but we can all agree
that they're evil.

Read "STOP
THE KOCH BROTHERS. They are trying to end the War on Drugs and
increase civil liberties." I don't know who epistemicfail is,
but the whole thing is totally worth reading.
As Matt Welch noted last night in another
piece well worth reading, David Koch is a trustee of Reason Foundation, the nonprofit that
publishes this website.

School bulling, violence against LGBT youth linked to suicide, HIV, STD risk in young adults

MAY 16, 2011 — Critical new research has found that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender LGBT youth who experience high levels of school victimization in middle and high school report impaired health and mental health in young adulthood, including depression, suicide attempts that require medical care, sexually transmitted diseases STDs and risk for HIV. This is the first known study to examine the relationship between school victimization during adolescence — specifically related to sexual orientation and gender identity — with multiple dimensions of young adult health and adjustment. The study demonstrates the importance of addressing and preventing anti-LGBT victimization at the structural or school level to reduce health disparities among LGBT young people. The study is published in the Journal of School Health, the journal of the American School Health Association.

Wyoming House Passes Bill Opposing Marriage Equality

On Monday, the Wyoming House of Representatives passed a bill banning state recognition of marriages and civil unions for gay and lesbian couples that were performed elsewhere. The bill comes as the result of several attempts of similar yet unsuccessful legislation in past years. State Rep. Owen Petersen, the bill?s sponsor, says it is necessary to reconcile a contradiction in Wyoming law, which states that marriage is the union of one man and one woman, but also recognizes any valid marriage performed outside of Wyoming?s jurisdiction. The bill passed 32-27 in the House even though it has failed twice before. Its prospects for passing the Senate appear strong.Related Media Coverage:Star-Tribune Capital Bureau ? Florida principal threatens gay students for holding hands

Broward County officials are concerned about the actions of a high school principal in Popmano Beach, Fla., who confronted a pair of lesbian students who were holding hands on the way to class.

?We were walking to class when he rolled up on his golf cart and said, ?Didn?t I tell you two to stop doing that?? and then he took us to his office,? one of the girls told South Florida Times. ?He gave us a speech and then separated us before calling our parents, which was wrong. My mother already knew but my friend?s mom didn?t know she is into girls.?

He then threatened them with suspension.

Though the school board says that no displays of affection - including hand-holding - are permitted, activists say that straight couples aren't censured for holding hands. Additionally, a "hand-holding ban" doesn't appear on the school's code of conduct website page.

The school has a non-discrimination policy that protects students based on age, race, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, marital status, national origin and religion.
