Wyoming House Passes Bill Opposing Marriage Equality

On Monday, the Wyoming House of Representatives passed a bill banning state recognition of marriages and civil unions for gay and lesbian couples that were performed elsewhere. The bill comes as the result of several attempts of similar yet unsuccessful legislation in past years. State Rep. Owen Petersen, the bill?s sponsor, says it is necessary to reconcile a contradiction in Wyoming law, which states that marriage is the union of one man and one woman, but also recognizes any valid marriage performed outside of Wyoming?s jurisdiction. The bill passed 32-27 in the House even though it has failed twice before. Its prospects for passing the Senate appear strong.Related Media Coverage:Star-Tribune Capital Bureau ?
