We must straighten our backs…

We trusted that following conservative and STRAIGHT (for those Prop 8 supporters) Justice Phillips’ September 9th decision that “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” was unconstitutional on two counts, the Senate would vote to uphold the integrity of our Nation by voting for the repeal of this pathetic law. The House had done so in June, along with the Senate Armed Services Committee. Now, backed by an unconstitutionality ruling, certainly the Senate would end the ban once and for all.

Fail.

Instead, on September 21st Sen. John McCain (R-Az.), a POW and a former hero to many of us veterans, single handedly obstructed justice with a filibuster. Sadly, the Senate could not muster 60 Senators willing to vote to override him.

No more than two…

January 2012 - Life on the road (and my own bed)

I've been wanting to share a lot that's happened over the last 5 or so weeks with you guys, but it seemed so overwhelming because I didn't know exactly where/how to start. Yesterday I read a musician's blog and what she does is summarizes her work by the month. So a few days into a month, she'll write about the preceding month. I dig that, so I shall henceforth be stealing this idea from Hannah:)I won't bore you with ALL of the details of how I got to this point, but basically, I spent months and months in my early-mid 20s booking and tour managing some of my indie friends' tours. This was thousands of miles traveled, several hotels and friends' couches crashed, and lots and lots of gas station food partaken...ofeth. All of this was of course after spending weeks booking the actual shows one by one, and talking to people with names like 'Snake' and 'Timber' asking if my friend(s) could play at their venue. For every show I booked, I got at least 10 'no's. I also heard hundreds of 'no's when I was publishing my music magazine INTERLUDE.So things haven't always been easy and I've spent plenty of time sleeping on the floor, the couch, and every once in a while, in beds. All the while though, I've been networking and making friends in various production roles, at various levels of success. The tenacity paid off when just a couple of days before New Year's, I was asked to help out with the production of a show out of town. The artist was CeeLo Green, and the show was the headlining Allstate BCS Fanfest event in New Orleans. So on New Year's Eve, I watched my new boss sing during the NYE countdown in Times Square, and a few hours later, I was hard at work helping to advance his next show.It was in New Orleans that I met CeeLo, the Goodie Mob, and CeeLo's incredible band for the first time. They're all amazingly talented and some of the nicest people I've ever met. The city was SO full of energy during these few days in particular because of the big game, and aside from being physically exhausted from all the work we did, I was on cloud 9 the entire time. I also got to meet this cool performer named DJ Ruckus. You guys should check him out. He is a REALLY sweet guy, and kinda blew my mind with how talented he is.(New Orleans stage during soundcheck!>(CeeLo's lighting/video director Fraser and me after the New Orleans show...right outside our production office/backstage area)I flew back to my new home in Houston for a few days to work on the next shows...and then it was back in the air. I can already tell that this year I will probably spend more time in the security line at airports than in my own bedroom. But do you see me complaining? Nope! And if you ever do, please feel free to slap me about my person.January was capped off the same way it started: EPIC...ly. Or whatever.I was flown to Miami and Montego Bay, Jamaica for 2 big shows. Miami's show was at the Fontainebleau hotel in their venue LIV and Jamaica's was the Jazz and Blues Festival where CeeLo was Saturday night's headliner. Friday night's headliner was Celine Dion! I definitely got spoiled with our accommodations that week and I'm not sure I'll know how to do anything without wearing a plush robe and having room service every 3 hours now that I've tasted the good life. I was also in the same room with Bobby Brown for a couple of hours while a Jamaican lady sang a 45 minute Whitney Houston medley to about 25k people...needless to say it was all sorts of awkward, but thats another story for another time. Anyhoo...I love robes!(My awesome view from my room in Miami)(The view from the hotel's private beach....cause THAT happens)It's pretty awesome to get to see everyone at the top of their game. Everyone in this team comes in ready to work hard, do their thing, and then celebrate just as passionately. I dig the pace of it all. And I think I'm going to like it here. I feel like Annie just moved into Mr. Warbucks' place and having a look around.(My view of soundcheck in Jamaica, mon!)While I was at the hotel in Jamaica, I saw these two chicks playing pool. My dar went into overdrive. I said to myself, I says 'Self...I spy homosexuals.' And Self agreed with me. But we were in Jamaica which isn't very lezzy friendly, AND I didn't wanna just walk up to them and say "LESBIANS!...welcome." No, this wasn't Weho, after all. So I did what any self-respecting gay blogger would have done: I walked up to them and I said 'If I said 'Shane is my homegirl,' would it mean anything to you?" They paused...stared at me for a while--enough time for me to be frightened even though they were a good 6 inches shorter than me and I could TOTALLY outrun them--and then one of them said, "HELL YEAH IT WOULD!" and we all hugged. It was awesome!! I recommend it as an icebreaker at your local deli or Jamaican hotel situation.Oh and did I mention everyone is British?? Well, not everyone. But like...more than half of the people I deal with are incredibly English and it rocks my world. Here are background singers Annabel and Jodie. The girls were drinking TEA. Can't make this stuff up!Not sure what's on the horizon for February and the rest of 2012, but I do know it will be filled with experiences I've never had before, new friends, hard work, hard play, and more robes than you can shake a robe at!

Leather labors of love
All over the country leather people are competing for local titles so that they may represent their communities at home and also at international contests next year. Producing a contest is an expensive and time consuming labor of love but the leather women of San Diego have found an ingenious way to raise funds and put a little camp into a community that sometimes takes itself way too seriously. Next Saturday, October 9th is the thirteenth annual Butch Revue which will benefit the charities of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and SD Leather Pride. Former Ms. World Leather and producer of Ms San Diego Leather, Annie Romano is the founder of the Butch Revue which was initially a fundraiser for her travel fund when she ran for IMsL in 1998 during her reign a…

February 2012 - Life on the Road (and mostly my crib)

Hello hello! So here we are again. I started this special series of blog entries last month (Click here for Jan. 2012) and am happy to report that...well there is more to report. I have *words* to say about February which means the clock hasn't yet struck midnight on this little fairy tale I'm living.(My friend Adriana and I doin' a faux prom pic in the middle of a hotel in LA a few days ago. That's normal, right? Oh and although it definitely looks like it, she is NOT in love with me. Totally looks like it, though, doesn't it. Sheesh, no means no, lady!)Now don't get me wrong: the job I have (like I'm sure it is for most of you reading this) is a LOT of hard work. Truly. It's mentally and physically challenging and there are a VAGILLION moving parts and lots of high stakes gigs/days. But the good news is that I LOVE that sort of energy. I love high stakes. I love having a ton of responsibility and people looking to me for answers. I love still having so many questions, and being a sponge, soaking it all up each and every day. Cause I know one day I will be jaded. One day this will just be a J.O.B. I hope that doesn't happen for several decades and that when it DOES happen, I'm somewhere on a jetpack and it won't matter anyway:) So the point is, I don't take a minute of this for granted. And while January was chock full of gigs and jetsetting and ROBES (see link above), February was relatively quiet until the veeery end. I spent most of February in Houston working on a few things from home, watching Criminal Intent marathons, and gaining SO much weight all throughout and about my person. I also came across some old photo prints that I did years ago in a dark room and it really has me inspired to pursue photography more seriously than ever before.(My brother Alfred, hand printed)(This chick that used to work at my favorite restaurant in Dallas, Mother Mesquite's, hand printed)The last week in Feb, I got a call that we would have to fly to LA the very next day for a big CeeLo show in Hollywood. We spent a few days in rehearsal...(The band playing during rehearsals)...and I spent a few minutes staring at this sign that I came across...(No biggie, just where my wife Katharine Mcphee's mom teaches and coaches American Idol contestants and others, and where my wife got her chops back in the day. Yep. I was able to *go to there*.)SO, speeeeaking of women named after felines who I am married to, did you guys catch when my other wife Cat Deeley retweeted me in Feb? No? I'll show you:That was cool, right? Know whats even cooler? Days later when I find out that Cat Deeley not only has great taste in food, tweets, and Arlans, but she ALSO says yes to the best gigs. She HOSTED the show we did in Hollywood! Good thing I didn't realize this until the night before the show, or I'm pretty sure I would have hyperventilated days earlier and wouldn't have been able to make it to the show at all. All tolled, I spent about 6 hours in Ms. Deeley's tall, luxurious, babe-alicious presence, and I can tell you this: the woman is HOT, friendly, DAMN good at her job, and an overall pleasant individual to be around. Unfortunately I did not get to redeem myself and ask for her hand in marriage, because she's a lady and I'm a professional...aaand truth be told, anytime she'd look in my general direction, I'd giggle and turn into a bowl of jello. But next time, I'll be rock solid, my friends. ROCK. SOLID.(My view of part of soundcheck at Hollywood and Highland. New artist 'V' was preparing for her incredible duet with CeeLo. She sounded great!)You can see pics from the red carpet and the show itself HERE!So thats a wrap for February 2012. I now return you to your regularly scheduled Daily Lesbian Moment blog:) See you again a few days into April where hopefully there will be even more to report. Shenanigans, I tell you. Pure shenanigans!- (Click here for Jan. 2012 blog entry)

SF Pride 2010

It's been almost a week since SF Pride and I think I'm just recovering now. Wow, what a fun and fantastic time. For the first time since we've been writing for them, Curve magazine had a float in the San Francisco Pride parade. I was so excited when I got the call. Did I want to ride on the float? Are you kidding me? I wouldn't miss it!But before Sunday and the parade began, I had a lot of other partying to get through. I arrived in SF Friday morning. I spend the afternoon with my friends, before heading over to the Olivia/Curve comedy night show with Dana Goldberg, Julie Goldman, Sandra Valls and Gina Yashere. I ran into many friends from past Olivia trips and laughed my little a** off. Then it was off to Tease to dance the night away. Perhaps I should have started pacing myself earlier. I had to be up early the next morning to join my friends over in Delores Park because I was helping out on stage at the Dyke March. My good friend Retts is stage manager and I volunteered to help out with stage crew. From noon until 7pm or so, we hustled ladies and dykes on and off the stage. Drummers and poets and politicians and singers and drag kings. What a lot of fun! I got to say hi to old friend Alix Dobkin and meet one of my butch Role Models, Phranc. The only bummer is we were wrapping things up at the stage and I missed the beginning of the march. The Dykes on Bikes. You know how Dipstick loves the Dykes on Bikes. After a quick dinner and outfit change, it was time to head out for more dancing with Curve and Olivia. This time over at the Olivia headquarters where I got to hang out with new friends: Mikey from The Real L Word and Top Chef Josie. But the big thrill of the night was when a tall woman came up to me and said, "Hi, I'm Sheri Sam." As in, Sheri Sam, the amazing WNBA star. If there's one thing Dipstick likes better than Dykes on Bikes, it's women's basketball. What an amazing day this was turning out to be. Lord knows what time it was by the time I got home to bed. And we had to meet at some corner at 10:15 am for the float. When I finally found the corner, I found the Curve ladies frantically gluing tissue paper and glitter to the Curve float. I grabbed a staple gun and got right to work.I love coming down to San Francisco for Curve events, because I get to meet other Curve contributors, like the amazing photographer Cheryl Mazak and blogger Queerie Bradshaw. And of course, any time I get to hang out with Curve publisher Franco Stevens, it's a good day. Once the float was together, we relaxed a bit, practiced our butchest parade wave and watched all the beautiful people stroll by. After about two hours of waiting, finally it was our turn! Our big cupcake float pulled out onto the street and the crowds were deafening. Our onboard DJ spun some old school Michael Jackson and of course, Pussy Cat Dolls. I waved and blew bubbles and looked for people I knew in the crowd while the ground crew handed out magazines to the crowd. The sun was out. We were happy and gay. And too quickly, it was over. I headed back to my hotel room to rest up, because, no, oh no, there was still much more partying to be done. Met some new friends for Happy Hour, old friends for dinner and then we all went to see Red Hot Blues Sisters play in a small club downtown. I stayed in San Francisco an extra day. I planned on spending some time hanging out and seeing the city. Instead, I got a late check-out from my hotel, met a friend for lunch and took the shuttle to the airport. You can see why it took me so long to recover. I'm not as young as I once was. But still, Pride in San Francisco never gets old.

The spark that ignited the flame…that led future GLBT generations out of the dark

What a list we have this year for the fifth anniversary of GLBT History Month. It would be impossible to cover all of those who have done so much for our community as every day we make history through our actions, even the smallest and simplest ones. Those who are honored this year are some of the more high profile GLBT’s that have, either in the past or present, found the strength, courage and will to help drive our rights forward. Each and every one of them should be honored and are worthy of our attention.

But without taking away from those we are honoring where is the sixteen year old who came out against all the odds and made something of himself giving back to his community at the same time? Is he not part of our history, or does he not count a…

Boston?s LGBTQ people of color take Pride in health

The New York Times last December came out with a front-page article on HIV/AIDS among African-American and Latino ?men who have sex with men.?
And its opening words were both shocking and unsparing: ?The AIDS epidemic in America is rapidly becoming concentrated among poor, young black and Hispanic men who have sex with men.?

While it might seem odd that LGBTQ people of color would prefer going to a school gym or a Pride picnic for health check-ups and information than to a hospital, the reasons are unfortunately rooted in the systemic healthcare disparities due not only to race discrimination, but also to gender identity and sexual orientation as well.

RGOD2: One thing you can do to celebrate Pride this month

In the 1980s at the LA Gay and Lesbian Center, peer education programs were hot. We trained young people to provide education, support and a network to LGBT youth in many Los Angeles schools. It was a simple solution to a complex problem ?the rising tide of runaways and throwaways on the streets of Hollywood who inevitably ended up in survival prostitution.

For only $60, you could provide peer education to an LGBT advocate in Uganda. This would be a magnanimous gift for Pride Month.

An interview with Monica Fontanoza, Army Reservist

Being that she was displaced as a youth, it took her many years to find herself and realize her potential. She joined the Sheriff’s Department in 2006 and later joined the Army Reserves in 2008. Her relationship at that time had gone sour after she signed the contract because her ex did not agree with gays in the service. However Monica disagreed and felt it was an honor to represent GLBT people anyway and anywhere she could.

Monica went on to become a Civil Affairs Specialist and fell in love with it, realizing that there are people out there with integrity and compassion for others. Fortunately for her she says, they are the men and women she gladly serves with.

Sexually attracted to women, but romantically attracted to men?

So I've always been attracted to both genders. But I get strong crushes mostly on men. However, unfortunately I'm mainly sexually attracted to women. I thought maybe it wasn't a big deal, but I really can't orgasm without thinking of myself with a woman. This sucks because I haven't ever met a woman that really gave me the butterflies the way men do. What the hell am I supposed to do relationship-wise? I like sex with men. I don't find them unattractive. I think their bodies can look good. But I almost never fantasize about them. And when I need to get off, it's always a woman that I think about. Typical sex with me =him getting me off with fingers or mouth while I lie back with my eyes closed and think of a woman. Then we have regular intercourse and he gets off. The more I think about it, the more messed up it sounds. I might not even be bisexual, just totally a lesbian maybe?

The last relationship was so great in every way except and I really felt love towards him. But during a disagreement we both confessed we weren't sexually attracted to each other and had been imagining other people to get off the whole time. And then we broke up. I feel like I don't want that to happen again because it makes me really sad.

But on the romantic side I meet women who are attractive to me, but I don't get really strong butterflies in my stomach like I have with some men. I really like being around men and dating men and hugging and cuddling with men. I guess it might be the same with women, but I haven't progressed very far. I don't know how to get that far if I'm not getting strong crushes, but I wonder how much of this is colored by my conservative Christian upbringing.

Once my parents found out of I was looking at women online and I was subject to a lot of abuse about it. Also growing up the women in my family were all pretty abusive towards me and it was men who were my allies. I was also told growing up that being gay is caused by sexual abuse and I think it's possible I was sexually abused by a female relative, something I'm exploring with my therapist. I know it's not true, but it's still something that crosses my mind Most of my friends have also been male. I see a therapist, but maybe I need to find one who specializes in LGBT issues?

I'm also not really sure how to be a lesbian anyway. It seems to involve so much culture I'm not familiar with and I wouldn't know where to start.

I just don't know what kind of relationship someone like me can make work.

Letters to the Editor

Letter to the editor:

Last night I attended the Hillcrest Town Council to listen to Todd Gloria, Carl DeMaio, debate Prop D. This was supposed to be an informational forum. Carl DeMaio, it appears, does not understand the word “decorum” as he continuously and viciously attached Todd Gloria, along unions and with the labor movement in general. DeMaio came across as a nasty bully. Probably a carry over from his childhood. Mr. DeMaio was a guest in Todd Gloria’s district but proceeded in his usually manner - that of an attach dog DeMaio periodally rolled his eyes or made faces behind Councilman Gloria’s back while the councilman spoke on the subject. DeMaio was plan rude and owes Councilman an apology.

As for the Unions and the Lab…

Anti-gay March for Marriage proves to be a big flop

WASHINGTON, DC -- The massive March for Marriage promised for today in Washington, DC proved to be nothing but a fizzle.
Organized by the anti-gay hate group the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) and featuring other homophobic groups and known hate leaders, the rally and march attracted hundreds of angry people, sounding helpless and desperate about their cause to defend "traditional marriage" during a tipping point in history where poll after poll shows that Americans are solidly behind LGBT equality.

One of the indelible pleasures of having spent 10 years writing movie reviews for Windy City Times is putting together a year-end "Best of" list, something that all film critics look forward to. I have had the additional pleasure of knowing that my list of recommendations really does serve a purpose, as it's the rare list focused solely on LGBT fare or those movies that included important queer characters or themes . But what other kind of list would a queer-film reviewer issue?

Life: It Just Gets Sweeter

Remember how my grief therapist, Tanya, helped me sort the shit out in my life back last year when my dad was first diagnosed with cancer?  She told me that if I would just find the courage to let go of the things that were a source of strife in my life (instead of hoping that they will change), I would make room for new things in my life that would bring me love, peace and joy. That bitch didn't lie.Things have been going well.  Really well.It started with just finding peace and solitude with the strife now gone from my house and my life.  I could just focus on doing me and being absolutely fantastic on my own.  I could have all of my time and energy to myself or share with the people that I wanted to give to, not the people who were demanding and unappreciative of it.Then, I started to meet new people and get involved in volunteering for causes that I care about. Then, I had the sweetest offer from the most beautiful woman to help me find ways to help my dad.  Our friendship grew and then, we started to see each other romantically.  After all, how could I not be attracted to someone who would spend time trying to help my father get well? Our casual dating took a sudden turn and I even remember the moment: She was spending the night and was in my robe with sexy fuck hair piled into a messy bun and a hot pair of nerdy librarian glasses on. She looked absolutely stunning.  One of my besties, Ande, came over and started telling us about her really fun night. I listened to Ande but watched my girl.  She smiled as Ande told us whatever she was telling us - I could hardly follow because I could not take my eyes off of this gorgeous creature.  She clapped and ran to hug Ande when Ande told us that a guy that she liked asked for her number.  She was just so happy because Ande was happy.  She derived her joy from the happiness of others and it took my breath away to watch her watch Ande.  It was at that moment that I realized that I was in deep.  She was no longer a girl I was dating; she was a girl that I now had feelings for.  She has been teaching me a lot of spiritual, zen things about energy, reiki, positivity and healing.  It has benefited everyone around me, especially my dad.  The fact that she is always thinking of ways to improve his cancer battle and helping me and my family shows what an enormous asset she is to my life.  There is not a time when I see her that she doesn't have some way to advance one of us in an area that we may struggle with.Example: When she knew I am in the home stretch of finishing my degree (less than 4 month until graduation!), she gave me a necklace with a rune symbol for completion on it to help me finish all of my tasks.  Whatever negativity that happens now just rolls off my back and I can't help but to smile and feel happy and positive.  When you are happy, you want everyone else to be, too.  It's a great feeling! My new sweetheart could not be more positive and each day that I know her better, I feel incredibly fortunate to have her in my life at this place during this time.Oh, and these little quotes on this post?  These are things that she has sent to me - I get them on a daily basis.  She is always loving, always encouraging, always positive and always ready to pour herself out for other people.  I am SO glad I followed the advice of my therapist by clearing out the negative things in my life to make room for the positive ones. It took some time and effort but making those decisions about what stayed and what had to go were the smartest decisions I ever made...

Feels like I'm 15 again

I'm in my early thirties, bisexual/queer and just ended a decade-long relationship with a cisgendered man. I'm starting to date women but haven't had sex with a woman in a decade and didn't have a lot of experience even then. I have always been a visible part of the LGBT community and most people assume I'm a lesbian, which makes people think I have more sexual experience with women than I do. I'm basically nervous about not knowing what to do anymore and being bad in bed. Questions are as follows: Should I disclose this lack of recent experience to the women I'm starting to casually date and have sex with? How can I stop being so nervous, which I know won't help? And: what does real-life lesbian safer sex look like when you're an adult and not a 23 year old with no sense of risk?

GLAAD meets with NBCUniversal to discuss transgender media images

Over the past month, GLAAD staff, including three of its transgender staffers, met with over 30 senior executives at MSNBC, NBC News, Bravo, and Oxygen, and with NBCUniversal's Chief Diversity Officer, for a discussion about fair, accurate, and inclusive media representations of transgender people in both news and entertainment. GLAAD also spoke with executives from the Human Resources department to cover issues related to creating an inclusive workplace for transgender employees.
In a meeting with journalists and producers from MSNBC and NBC News, GLAAD praised programming like Melissa Harris-Perry, Ronan Farrow Daily, TODAY, and Rock Center with Brian Williams for including transgender people as guests and covering issues like transgender military service and anti-discrimination legislation. GLAAD also pointed out ways in which news coverage could begin to move beyond some of the clichs often seen in even the best coverage, like "before and after" pictures of transgender people, and questions about medical procedures. We pitched several story ideas about issues important to the trans community, such as New York state refusing to provide transgender-related healthcare to people on Medicaid, the epidemic of violence facing transgender women of color, transgender athletes, and the success stories to be found in the Trans 100 list.In a separate meeting with producers and publicists from Bravo and Oxygen, GLAAD presented a brief history of transgender people who have appeared in reality television, and encouraged both networks to find ways to incorporate transgender people into their current and upcoming shows.Since our meetings, MSNBC has continued to cover trans stories in fair and accurate ways. Ronan Farrow invited GLAAD Senior Media Strategist Tiq Milan onto his show to discuss the TIME magazine cover story about the "transgender tipping point," and Jonathan Capeheart gave an overview of the current state of the movement for trans civil rights in America.Research shows that around 90% of Americans personally know someone who is gay, lesbian or bisexual, but only 8% personally know someone who is transgender. This means that most Americans can weigh firsthand knowledge when considering defamatory or insensitive media coverage of the LGB community, but the vast majority of Americans have no personal connection to someone who is transgender, so they rely solely on the media for information.Feedback from the meetings was positive and we look forward to working with these networks to ensure that more transgender voices are included in their programming.

Real Estate News

Fannie bares her teeth
Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae - the hillbilly kissin’ cousins of the nation’s secondary mortgage market - instituted a long-needed reform to the sale process of its REO (foreclosed) properties. The “First Look” program gives buyers purchasing a primary residence for their own use, a 15-day head-start before investors can submit offers on the same property.

Nearly 18 months ago I met with the field staff of Congresswoman Susan Davis’ office on this matter and I was glad to see both Fannie and Freddie get on board. The problem in a nutshell is this: Investors, including large syndicators began snapping up foreclosures at an astonishing rate converting large percentages of owner-occupied housing into rental stock.

Lesbian overthinks her gender expression. News at 11.

I'm a 22-year-old lesbian. I have never made any effort to look hot, but suddenly I want to, and it's raising some serious identity issues for me. Hygiene/beauty-wise, all I do is shower daily, brush my teeth, comb my hair (though it tends to go every which-way), and wear deodorant, clean clothes (some men's, some women's), and moisturizer (for the SPF). I don't own any makeup and I don't know how to apply it. Basically, I look like I don't give a fuck.

Here's the thing, though?I do give a fuck, and I think my apparent apathy's a holdover from a time when I truly wasn't comfortable with myself. As a closeted teen/pre-teen, I wore dingy sweats everyday and kept a copy of The Beauty Myth in my junior high school locker. (I'm sure NO ONE ever suspected.) I defined myself in opposition to other girls because I felt like I could never truly be one of them anyway and was too proud to try. I also did it to distance myself from them so I didn't have to deal with my attraction. On a less psychosexual level, I felt like if I tried to look pretty, people would see right through it and laugh at me.

I had a boyfriend in high school and a couple more in college, along with some random male hookups (I came out "bisexual" at 18). Almost every single first makeout session would include a moment where the guy would look at me real close and then quizzically remark, "You know, you're really pretty," like he'd never noticed before and was pleasantly surprised. Secretly, I loved hearing that?in my mind, it indicated that I wasn't naturally uglier than other girls, but merely had less superficial values. (Ugh.)

Now I've graduated college and am finally out as gay, not bi. My frumpiness is no longer really a source of political pride for me anymore, because I've internalized patriarchal beauty standards enough to only be attracted to women who mostly fit them (yeah, stone me). I'm not trying to imply that a butch or androgynous woman who likes feminine women is necessarily a hypocrite; just that my former feminister-than-thou attitude about not meeting those standards no longer makes sense. Also, it's not like I'm some Jackie Warner/Kate Moennig type?I just look like a troll.

I don't know what sort of gender presentation I'd have if I didn't go through such a long phase of self-loathing, but I suspect that the answer is still not "Barbie". The last time I really dressed up girly was a couple years ago and I felt like I was in drag, but hey, I don't feel terribly comfortable with the way I look now either. Ultimately, I'd like to look like a cute urban 20-something queer girl that other cute urban 20-something queer girls could see themselves dating, instead of an overgrown 3rd grader with blotchy skin and gigantic boobs.

I suppose I know, in broad strokes, how to go about changing my image: learn how to tame my hair, get some makeup and try to even my skin tone a little on nights that I go out, buy trendy-looking clothes I normally wouldn't look at twice, get less-dorky glasses the next time I need a new prescription. If you have any practical advice on those matters, it's more than welcome. (I'm 5'5", 140 lbs, white, and would look ridiculous with hair any shorter than chin-length.) But I guess my real question is, though, how do I not feel so ridiculous trying? I spent my entire adolescence acting either aggressively opposed to this sort of stuff or innocently too "deep" for it. It's a big part of who I was, which is probably why it feels like such a big deal changing it. I don't have any real reason to believe I won't just feel like a potential poser again. Also, I feel like most other people have settled into their style by this age even if do they switch things up here and there, so this sort of deliberate change feels kind of life-stage inappropriate.

As for what I can afford... I make $35,000 a year, my rent's $650/month, and I'm not in any debt. Obviously cheaper is better, but I'm willing to throw a little bit of money at this problem.

(Also, yes, I know that confidence is my biggest issue and that that's not primarily a matter of looks, but I wanted this question to be targeted.)
