A psychological look at HIV
I am sometimes asked to help facilitate workshops at The Center for people who are HIV-positive. As an HIV- person, I consider this quite an honor…and I have learned A LOT in doing so. I’ve learned that, for many people, an HIV+ diagnosis feels like your world is falling apart. After the initial shock wears off, most people feel a lot of grief and depression. Over the years, so many people have asked me some version of these two questions: “How do I keep my sanity when I get an HIV+ diagnosis?” “What do I do when it feels like my life is falling apart?”
To answer these questions, here are some questions that I have offered participants in workshops for HIV+ folks. [Note: If you’re HIV-, these questions may still be…

If she tells me I'm same-sex attracted one more time, I will scream!

Even after taking a year off with no contact, my mother is continuing her negative comments toward my relationship with my lesbian partner. We followed much of the advice in this previous AskMe, and did the year of no contact and it actually seemed to work for a while. It seems to be wearing off and my mother is now making remarks to various siblings of mine (I come from a big Mormon family) that "Natasha's" and my children will not turn out right, comparing the situation to my cousin's who grew up with a single mom and how they turned out without a father home, that she just can't get comfortable with the arrangement, etc. How do I specifically tell my mom this is Not Ok and get her to knock it off? After the year of no contact (ended 8 months ago) my parents invited us over to their house for dinner, my dad apologized for a lot of the stuff he and my mom said during that time. We've had several get togethers since then.

Fast forward to yesterday. Things have been going...better in a sense that they don't treat Natasha half as rudely as they did before, but it's still a bit weird. However, my family just returned from a 2 week European vacation two days ago (that we were not invited on... my mother told my sister that it was because we had told her that we would only sleep in the same bed during the trip, and had declined. We never got the chance to make a decision either way, as, we weren't ever invited. It's better we didn't go, but that's another story for another day).

My mom keeps telling different siblings of mine (who relate this to me in one way or another) that she just doesn't approve of Natasha, that our children are going to suffer (if she only knew we are seriously considering getting pregnant by the end of the year), and that "living this way is going to have serious consequences down the road." Direct quote.

I've been out since I was 21- to the whole world but this is my first serious relationship where marriage and babies have been discussed. My mother called yesterday and I didn't pick up her call- since they have been gone 2 weeks it's been a while since I talked to her. I screened her call and am now writing this AskMe.

What is a reasonable way to interact with my mother on this? I want to call her out for her bad behavior and I don't really have the words to do it. My mom does intimidate me a little but I have always been known to stand up to bullies so this shouldn't be any different. As of this month, Natasha and I have since moved out of state and so contact with them will be even less frequent, but this all sucks so much. I still have siblings living at home that she's influencing.

I'm just your standard lesbian with a beautiful partner that I love dearly. Nothing to write home about, so why is my mother (and my dad more removed) having such a hard time coming to grips with "life"? I don't understand and I don't know how to cope. I've been going through this for almost two years with them and the stress and worry have become overwhelming. Natasha has been so understanding through all of this but I worry about the impact it has on her. I thought the Dan Savage "year off" would do the trick, and it worked for a little while but there are deeper seated feelings about my partnership with Natasha than I ever thought were actually possible. Thank you in advance for reading.

Hot Flash Dances for Lesbians

I've always loved the idea of Hot Flash Dances. Lesbians love to dance, there's no doubt about that. But a lot of the lesbian dance clubs cater to a younger clientele who start the party at 10, 11pm or later. Where does someone go to dance who doesn't want to wait that late to get their evening started? Hot Flash and Inferno dances offer lesbians everything they want from a dance club--great DJs, a fun club scene, go-go dancers, plenty of hot women to dance or flirt with and it all starts at a reasonable hour. Family Ties... Again

My Mormon parents won't let me bring my lesbian partner to my brother's wedding (and other big events in our lives). How do we get through this? Natasha and I live together in Salt Lake City. We've been together for just over a year now and I love her. My partner and parents have met exactly once. My parents are Mormon, and live an hour away.

Since I wrote this question my brother has met the girl of his dreams and they are getting married this weekend. In addition, a bridal shower for my brother's fiancee has come and gone, and my grandpa died two weeks ago.

Navigating this zone of family events has been difficult because these are all events I would want my partner to go with me to, but she is explicitly NOT invited. When I wrote the question in June, I was just thinking of Thanksgiving and the Fourth. I wasn't thinking about the Big Events (i.e. Funerals and Weddings). Silly me.

About a month after I wrote the question to MeFi, my parents and Natasha met for a brief dinner and had a pleasant conversation. It went well enough. They told me later that they thought she was charming that they could tell she made me happy. I took this as a step in the right direction but it was the last direct contact they have had since then.

Since this meeting some events have taken place.

In October, there was a bridal shower for my brother's fiancee that we were both invited to by the fiancee. My mom called me as Natasha and I pulled into the parking lot at the bridal shower. My mom told me Natasha was not welcome. I told her Natasha was invited by the hostess, as I was. Despite her protesting, we went in, had some cider. My mom sulked at a table. We hung out with my sisters and then we left.

Fast forward another month. There was a funeral for my mom's dad this past weekend. My mom told me my partner was not invited. Natasha offered to drive me out of state to the funeral, so I wouldn't have to drive in the same car as my mom- even though she wasn't invited to the funeral. It was hard to walk up to that casket alone.

I don't want Natasha to go where she's not welcome. I don't want her to feel she's not accepted. Plenty of people love us and think we're awesome. But we need to be present when Life Events happen. I don't want to endure Life Events alone without my partner.

TLdr: My brother is getting married this Saturday. Natasha is not invited to the wedding. I am aware that my parents' viewpoint is shocking, outdated even for most Mormons, and just plain tacky. My partner comes first, and my parents' homophobia is ridiculous. I am going to the wedding to support my brother and his new love.

1) What mantra can I repeat to people to explain my mom's bad behavior?
2) How do we get through this?
3) Any advice for the future?

Thank you.

Toronto lesbian social groups?

Toronto lesbian community/friends filter: Where in Toronto can I find and join some sort of lesbian social groups? Where are the non-alcoholic local hang outs? I am single (so, the couples-only ones are out) and in my late 20's. I'm really just looking for friends. I tried okcupid, but all the meetings turn into dates quickly, and before I know it a woman is professing love when I haven't even decided we can be great friends. I have some gay friends, both men and women, in real life, but I want to meet more.

How do I get the girl?!

Help me navigate my way through dating in my twenties and escaping the perpetual friend zoning: lesbian edition. Long story with links to my dating profiles for critiquing. I've gone through most of the dating threads here on MeFi and have favorite'd every post I feel could apply to me, but I'd love to hear some advice that can be tailored for a twenty-something lesbian who is having a difficult time landing a long-term relationship. It's something knew I've always wanted as I am not hardwired for casual encounters/flings/short-term relationships. I like having a strong bond with someone and I maintain them with family and friends, though ideally I'd really love to have a girl I can call my own -- one I am physically, intellectually, and emotionally drawn to that I can take out and have fun with and have sex with regularly and everything is mutual. My standards are basic and realistic, and I am not a practitioner of settling.

My history: I've been in the dating scene for about 4 years now -- 2 of those years exclusively dating women and I have met up with a total of 9 at this point. They've all varied between non-starters, short-term flings, and one long-distance relationship (the latter crashing and burning as I'm certain she found someone else). What I find to be the most frustrating of all is that more often times than not, things end on their terms. I'm either sent to the friend zone after the first date or involved in a short-term fling that ends with, "I'm not looking for anything serious." I have enough experience now to know how to balance on that fine line between being eager and aloof, and I exhibit enough assertiveness to let a girl know that I am interested without being overbearing -- so, what gives? I do tend to fall hard and fast, but as I said, I find that balance. I'm also more of a go-getter because I feel like I wouldn't achieve what I want by simply waiting for it to fall on my lap. This is why I have no problem initiating first moves with girls. Every date I've had has been via online dating because I live so far from the gay scene in my area. Really, it's my only option, but it has proven to be a very frustrating medium because it's largely a numbers game and it's easier for people to have a grass-is-greener mentality. Hell, maybe I'm guilty of it, too, though I try not to be.

Those of you follow posts here closely may remember my previous threads, so by my own admission, yes, I'm young, immature, naive, and have a lot of growing up to do; I'm definitely still a work in progress. :) For those who don't, here is a link to both my PlentyOfFish and OKCupid profile just to get an idea of who I am. My writing accurately reflects how I am face to face; however, I can't help but wonder if there is something off-putting about me in person that I cannot pinpoint. Every girl I've taken out has been visibly entertained (busting up laughing, lots of witty banter exchanged), but first dates seem to be my expiration date. I'm still in school living at home, and I'm beginning to seriously wonder if that's turning these girls off.

In the past two months, I've met up with 3 girls. The first one told me she was getting more involved with someone else when I tried to arrange a second date, and her honesty was met with a graceful "wish you well" exit. The second awesome but it seems we've implicitly assumed that we will just be friends, and the third? I felt the strongest connection with her after maintaining daily contact. It takes a very particularly witty person to keep up with my dry humor and she wasn't like most girls who essentially feed into what I say. I loved that she was able to dish it and take it and I felt like I found a great catch, AND she's very pretty too boot! After talking since Tuesday, we met up on Saturday and I definitely felt the chemistry. She took a moment to tell me how much fun she was having with me but I noticed that after about two hours, she kind of ended the date abruptly by saying, "Wanna get out of here?". It was midnight after all, so I drove her home just a few blocks away, and gave her a farewell hug and a kiss. No text when I got home and nothing the following morning. So I thanked her for coming out, that I had fun, and that I was looking forward to next time. Her response was, "I had fun too :)!". Asked her how she felt that morning (sent at 11:30AM, she had a strong drink the night before), and I didn't get a reply until about 10PM.

Normally when I notice a dramatic decline in contact, my gut tells me their interest waned while my head makes "they're just busy today" excuses. From past experiences, my gut has NEVER failed me. When I tried to make another date for tomorrow, she said it sounded fun, and followed up with another text saying, "And I think it's more of a friends thing for me :\". Once again, I tried to handle it like a G with, "Bummer! Well, it was pleasant meeting you, and good luck with all your future endeavors! :)". While I'm sad, I appreciated the opportunity of cutting off quickly like a guillotine. I understand that these are merely first dates and they owe me absolutely nothing, but when I've friend-zoned someone, I've always sincerely admired them as a person and have been genuine about it by giving them enough time and space for feelings to dissipate, and often times one of us eventually reconnects and we maintain a real friendship. I really wish more people were this way, although at the same time, I can understand how awkward and uncomfortable it would feel for them. What I don't get is that a couple of these girls (during the dates) will ask me something or say something that implies that they're thinking there will be a next time with me. Girl #1 asked how far of a drive I am to a new city she may be relocating to for work while the last one (Girl #3) asked if the rules at my house are strict/lenient, and how my parents felt about me spending the night elsewhere. There is never any follow-through and I'm beginning to take words with a grain of salt.

It's gotten to the point that I can't cry about it anymore? all I do now is just laugh at how ridiculous my bad luck is. Even the most resilient would get jaded -- but at the same time, I refuse to allow things like this (what I think is beyond my control anyway) to embitter me. I feel like all I can do is have a sense of humor about it because at worst, they make for funny anecdotes. I've had guy friends tell me not to worry, and they tend to say things like, "Oh, you're too hot for her anyway." Well, thanks brah? but it still doesn't stop me from wanting her. :/

Maybe what I need is an attitude change. I want to be more easy-going about all this and be like all the cool people who don't get so bent out of shape over trivial matters like this. I want to be like those people who can enjoy dating for its own sake carefree. How do I stop over caring? And how do I go about getting the girl? I want that ending where we run hand in hand through a flower field to the chorus of "Happy Together" and walk off to the sunset with Phil Collins' "Against All Odds" as the song for the closing credits.

On an ending note, I'm beginning to feel this way: http://imgur.com/gallery/Q7Llv. :) Thank you for reading!

INTERSEX Rights - Whose Life is it, Anyways

Intersex, in humans and other animals, is a variation in sex characteristics including chromosomes, gonads, or genitals that do not allow an individual to be distinctly identified as male or female. Such variation may involve genital ambiguity, and combinations of chromosomal genotype and sexual phenotype other than XY-male and XX-female.

Intersex infants with ambiguous outer genitalia may be surgically 'corrected' to more easily fit into a socially accepted sex category. Others may opt, in adulthood, for surgical procedures in order to align their physical sex characteristics with their gender identity or the sex category to which they were assigned at birth.

From the NEW YORKER this week....

Jim Ambrose was born in 1976, with, he wrote last year, ?genitals that
frightened my parents and caregivers.? He had one X and one Y
chromosome, but his sex organs were ambiguous, resembling a large
clitoris or a small penis. Doctors have an easier time eliminating
tissue than adding it, and so they decided to surgically remove the
organ and the nearby testes. The baby was raised as a girl, named Kristi
Bruce.

When Ambrose was twelve years old, he began to take female hormones. At
eighteen, he prepared to undergo a vaginoplasty, the surgical
reconstruction of the vagina. Suffering from depression, Ambrose
contemplated suicide. ?I knew that I wasn?t a girl,? he later told a reporter.
The following year, Ambrose obtained his medical records, and
discovered what had happened to him as an infant: ?I was sterilized at
birth?and no one ever told me.? Ambrose was born with a condition that
inhibited testosterone production; after adolescence, he began to take
testosterone shots, and had surgery to remove his breasts.READ the full article.

Trouble... with a capital T: Coronation Street recap ? March 28

Last week saw Sophie returning home from the hospital after her fall, and discussing her feelings about how she survived it with her pessimistic girlfriend, Sian. Sophie has returned to work and stumbles across a new addition to the street’s residents, who makes life interesting for our lesbionic couple.

28th March
Random Rosie tries to encourage Sophie to stay on Kevin’s good side after his recent lottery win. She explains that if Sally doesn’t get half in the divorce, then it’s better to be in with their dad for the money. Sophie’s shocked at how easily her sister is swayed by money and how disloyal it is to their mum, and Random Rosie can’t believe that Sophie is her sister with the things that go on in her head. Oh Double R, how I have missed your superficial logic recently.

Kevin sent Sally a bouquet of flowers, but she mistook them as being sent from Jeff. When she finds out the truth about Kevin trying to buy his way back into her life, she doesn’t like it one bit. I think this divorce is going to get very ugly, very quickly.

Sophie is back working at the shop, and has her first encounter with a new addition to the street. He flirts and she just rolls her eyes and barely even gives him the time of day... or the correct change for his purchases.

Sian is next in line to meet the newest addition to the street, and he flirts with her too, while she just looks at him and walks on. Wow, this guy really can’t take a hint.

He’s looking for Tyrone and goes to the garage, where he meets Kevin in a bad mood. Surprise, surprise! He then goes to the cafe and finds Sian... who he begins telling about the way Kevin spoke to him, and how he was treated by the stroppy girl in the shop. Sian smirks and tries not to laugh at her girlfriend’s mood and Kevin’s response.

He decides to show Sian some of the tricks he learned out in Thailand for relieving stress and starts to sort her Chi with reflexology on her hand. Just as he’s manhandling Sian’s palm... Sophie arrives in the cafe.

“What the hell is going on?!” To be fair, I’d probably ask the same thing if I walked in on a guy I didn’t like, playing with my girl’s hand. Kevin also walks in and as the guy tells Sophie where to go, Kevin tells him to back off from his daughter. All the while Sian’s trying not to laugh as the guy works out Kevin and Sophie are related... then when he discovers Sophie and Sian are a couple he comments on it being a waste. Daddy Kevin to the rescue again when Sophie says he’s being homophobic to them. The guy says he wasn’t making comment on her sexuality; he was making comment on her. Kevin goes all caveman on his ass and wants to take it “outside!” Sian points out to the guy that Tyrone’s just walked in and he’d better go. Sophie takes his seat and the guy introduces himself to Ty as Tommy Duckworth, Jack’s grandson... and wonders if Jack’s about, not knowing that Jack died just a few months before.

- - -

Well, Sophian seem to be getting more comfortable at telling people they’re together, and Sophie really needs to take that green-eyed monster off of her before it gets her in more trouble with Sian. Come back next week to see what happens next with the divorce and it’s affect on our little lesbionic couple. You can read previous recaps here.

SF Pride 2010

It's been almost a week since SF Pride and I think I'm just recovering now. Wow, what a fun and fantastic time. For the first time since we've been writing for them, Curve magazine had a float in the San Francisco Pride parade. I was so excited when I got the call. Did I want to ride on the float? Are you kidding me? I wouldn't miss it!But before Sunday and the parade began, I had a lot of other partying to get through. I arrived in SF Friday morning. I spend the afternoon with my friends, before heading over to the Olivia/Curve comedy night show with Dana Goldberg, Julie Goldman, Sandra Valls and Gina Yashere. I ran into many friends from past Olivia trips and laughed my little a** off. Then it was off to Tease to dance the night away. Perhaps I should have started pacing myself earlier. I had to be up early the next morning to join my friends over in Delores Park because I was helping out on stage at the Dyke March. My good friend Retts is stage manager and I volunteered to help out with stage crew. From noon until 7pm or so, we hustled ladies and dykes on and off the stage. Drummers and poets and politicians and singers and drag kings. What a lot of fun! I got to say hi to old friend Alix Dobkin and meet one of my butch Role Models, Phranc. The only bummer is we were wrapping things up at the stage and I missed the beginning of the march. The Dykes on Bikes. You know how Dipstick loves the Dykes on Bikes. After a quick dinner and outfit change, it was time to head out for more dancing with Curve and Olivia. This time over at the Olivia headquarters where I got to hang out with new friends: Mikey from The Real L Word and Top Chef Josie. But the big thrill of the night was when a tall woman came up to me and said, "Hi, I'm Sheri Sam." As in, Sheri Sam, the amazing WNBA star. If there's one thing Dipstick likes better than Dykes on Bikes, it's women's basketball. What an amazing day this was turning out to be. Lord knows what time it was by the time I got home to bed. And we had to meet at some corner at 10:15 am for the float. When I finally found the corner, I found the Curve ladies frantically gluing tissue paper and glitter to the Curve float. I grabbed a staple gun and got right to work.I love coming down to San Francisco for Curve events, because I get to meet other Curve contributors, like the amazing photographer Cheryl Mazak and blogger Queerie Bradshaw. And of course, any time I get to hang out with Curve publisher Franco Stevens, it's a good day. Once the float was together, we relaxed a bit, practiced our butchest parade wave and watched all the beautiful people stroll by. After about two hours of waiting, finally it was our turn! Our big cupcake float pulled out onto the street and the crowds were deafening. Our onboard DJ spun some old school Michael Jackson and of course, Pussy Cat Dolls. I waved and blew bubbles and looked for people I knew in the crowd while the ground crew handed out magazines to the crowd. The sun was out. We were happy and gay. And too quickly, it was over. I headed back to my hotel room to rest up, because, no, oh no, there was still much more partying to be done. Met some new friends for Happy Hour, old friends for dinner and then we all went to see Red Hot Blues Sisters play in a small club downtown. I stayed in San Francisco an extra day. I planned on spending some time hanging out and seeing the city. Instead, I got a late check-out from my hotel, met a friend for lunch and took the shuttle to the airport. You can see why it took me so long to recover. I'm not as young as I once was. But still, Pride in San Francisco never gets old.

War on Women's Reproductive Rights Escalates in the States

http://www.now.org/issues/abortion/08292013waronwomeninstates.htmlAn all-out assault on women's reproductive health and rights continues in many state legislatures -- a stark reminder that elections have consequences. The disastrous 2010 elections saw Tea Party extremists flooding into state legislatures (as well as the U.S. Congress), and although they campaigned on economic issues, once in office their first order of business was to begin blocking women's access to abortion care, birth control, and other family planning services.

Pretty Airplanes

Jes from Dayton Ohio recently contacted me to tell me about an art project she completed. She was invited by the city to cover this model F16 jet with art. Since she is a mosaic artist, this is what she came up with. Jess said:I covered the Jet with stained glass because glass is the most beautiful media in the world ;)I wanted to show a larger range of color and knew that a rainbow would be perfect. The plane is meant to be beautiful more than anything else. I wanted people to want to know what she is all about. A beautiful sculpture that says I'm proud to be gay and in the military. I hope this Rainbow F16 serves as a reminder that we need to defeat the BAN on gay men and women serving our country. Equality is beautiful.Jes's plane will be on display in a bank in Dayton, Ohio. Thanks for sharing Jes!

OWNED!

Remember my old regular feature "Texts from Lindsey"?  They were the witty, sarcastic texts that my high-school daughter would send to me.  Yeah, well she's out of high school and in college now - the same college that I go to.And, as fate would have it, we are in the same grammar class this semester.Yesterday, I got to class where she had already taken a seat.  My professor handed my graded homework and a quiz from last week.  I got a 9/10 which was great since I was having trouble memorizing the 6 verb types and what things need to accompany them.I held up my paper proudly to show Lindsey.  (as if she cared)She smiled at me and then held hers up showing me her 10/10.  She then shot me a bird and mouthed the word "OWNED!" which made me burst into laughter.  I love this kid SO much.  Nobody makes me laugh like she does...

Hello, 2014: From Sochi to Schock, here's a flippant attempt at reading the year's tea leaves

Opinion: With my last column of 2013 dedicated to my holiday wishes, the first column of 2014 should obviously be dedicated to predictions. First up in my crystal ball is a foreseen blend of entertainment and technology. Janelle Monáe has been telling us for years she's an android. In 2014, she'll come out as a lesbian, to boot. A perfect mix of taste and technology. You may remember that Family Guy tried to tell the world in 2009's episode "Hannah Banana" that Miley Cyrus is also an android -- but more an alpha-testing model, relative to Monáe's super-sophisticated ArchAndroid/Cindi Mayweather. So, when Monáe comes out as a Covergirl for the ladies, Cyrus will try to again reprogram herself to keep up, announcing a new career direction that moves from "just feels black" to "just feels lesbian-y," spending the remainder of 2014 back in jeans and hi-tops and doing Indigo Girls covers at Olivia events. Sports will blend with politics as all eyes turn to Sochi and the Winter Olympics. As a visiting U.S. delegate, Billie Jean King will challenge Vladimir Putin to a judo match, his favored combat sport. In 1973 "Battle of the Sexes" style, she will clean his clock. Putin's televised tears will leave his "macho" persona in shambles. King's shout to the crowd as she stands over the weeping president -- "You're next, skater boy!" -- will land Johnny "I don't pretend to get Russian politics" Weir in protective custody. ... (more)

DADT – Not Your Fight?

Every issue in the GLBT community has had the tendency to show why the ‘GLBT’ community uses individual letters to represent the different components of the community. It’s like staring at a bowl of Alphabets cereal in milk, when an issue comes along certain letters drift away.

We are all creatures of self interest to some degree, and there is nothing inherently wrong with that when it is counter balanced with an understanding that even as individuals we can be diminished by someone else’s loss.

When Your Kid is Amazing

Nick and IMy son has this tendency to make me proud. It started the day of his birth and has continued to this very moment.  I won't make an exhaustive list of all the things he does to make me feel this way but trust me, there is no finer son.   Yesterday, I saw that he had a new blog post on "Chivalry" and I decided to go have a look.  After all, what mother doesn't enjoy reading her children's thoughts on the things she worked hard to teach.Although lengthy, it reminded me how thoughtful he is.  Not considerate-thoughtful (although he is VERY), but actually thinks about things-thoughtful.  It reminded me of this time when he was about 2 years old.  I walked past the kitchen and saw him sitting on the counter eating a banana.  "Nick," I said, "You are supposed to ask someone before you help yourself to food."  Without skipping a beat, he replied, "I did, Mommy.  I asked myself 'Nicky, can you have this banana?' and I told myself, 'Sure, go ahead.'"Always thinking...

COMMENTARY: On abortion clinic buffer zones and busybodies

Today is the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision. Last Wednesday, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on a case intended to overturn Massachusetts? abortion clinic buffer zone law, one of endless efforts to chip away at the right to legal abortion established by Roe v. Wade. Anti-abortionistas are so persistently pesky.

I do know that if the Supreme Court justices decide against Massachusetts? law, anti-abortionistas will have a hell of a party, because the decision could put other state and municipal buffer laws at risk.

One Direction Gay Ad for Nintendo

Those One Direction guys are so metro-sexual with their tactile hugging and playfulness. They are toally surrounded by those One Direction Gay rumours. Irrespective of that, just like JLS they have an advertising deal with Nintendo! The only trouble with this is, they haven't released any music yet. The same thing happened with JEdward - thankGod they didn't release any music.

Getting an ad deal with Nintendo is really basically because they are famous for being an X-Factor contestant and of course for being cute, popular..... They are also at the top of their career (to date) and may have signed up for peanuts. JEdward allegedly earned 3 in their first year from PAs and advertising deals.

Anyway they are definitely getting cuter since they appeared on the X-factor?

Last year, Denver's cleverly hip and pop-culture-minded Curtis Hotel offered an "Ellen & Portia" Valentine's Day package as part of its Couples We Love promotion. The package was so successful - Ellen Degeneres even mentioned it on her show - that the Curtis has come up with a similar deal for V-Day 2014, this time celebrating three new couples. And once again, one of the pairs is dear to the GLBT community: the "Cam & Mitch" package is, of course, named for the lovably neurotic fictional duo on TV's Modern Family, Cameron Tucker (played by straight actor Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell Pritchett (portrayed by openly gay actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson)....Read Full Post

New survey on sex in US, biggest since 1994

NEW YORK (AP) – The male-female orgasm gap. The sex lives of 14-year-olds. An intriguing breakdown of condom usage rates, by age and ethnicity, with teens emerging as more safe-sex-conscious than boomers.

That’s just a tiny sampling of the data being unveiled Monday in what the researchers say is the largest, most comprehensive national survey of Americans’ sexual behavior since 1994.

Filling 130 pages of a special issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, the study offers detailed findings on how often Americans have sex, with whom, and how they respond. In all, 5,865 people, ranging in age from 14 to 94, participated in the survey.

The lead researchers, from Indiana University’s Center for Sexual Health Promotion, said the study f…

We must straighten our backs…

We trusted that following conservative and STRAIGHT (for those Prop 8 supporters) Justice Phillips’ September 9th decision that “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” was unconstitutional on two counts, the Senate would vote to uphold the integrity of our Nation by voting for the repeal of this pathetic law. The House had done so in June, along with the Senate Armed Services Committee. Now, backed by an unconstitutionality ruling, certainly the Senate would end the ban once and for all.

Fail.

Instead, on September 21st Sen. John McCain (R-Az.), a POW and a former hero to many of us veterans, single handedly obstructed justice with a filibuster. Sadly, the Senate could not muster 60 Senators willing to vote to override him.

No more than two…

Thank you.

Support, counseling, education for gay youth

(AP) – Support and other resources for gay young people are out there, sometimes only a click or a phone call away, but advocates said the recent suicide of Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi and other teens who were believed to have been victims of anti-gay bullying point to the need for even more widespread help.

In a country of about 12,000 public school districts, the education network known as GLSEN (glsen.org) counts about 4,000 Gay-Straight Alliances, the name for school clubs - mostly in high schools - that register with the group.

“Youth in general are not very help-seeking,” said the organization’s executive director, Eliza Byard. “Getting people to reach out is one of the big challenges.”

Roles

.Where I work in a computer lab at my school, a woman who found out that I was gay initiated some hetero-lesbian talk with me.  This is a strange phenomenon that occurs whenever you aren't "Richard Simmons-obviously gay" and another woman finds out that you are a lesbian.  They establish that they are "friendly" by telling you that they have a gay friend, uncle or neighbor.  Then, there is some small talk followed by the transitional statement of "Can I ask you a personal question?"  I really like this because it is hetero speak for "Can we talk about sex?.Absolutely!  My favorite topic..Usually, she wants to know what role I play.  The question can be phrased in a number of different ways such as "Who's the man in your relationship?" or "Who is the dude?" or, one of my favorites, "Who takes out the trash?"  This one is fun because I play a little and say, "Oh, there is no man." or "I have my daughter take out the trash."  Then, I let them know that I am a Lara Croft soft butch and then they feel completely free to say anything that happens across their minds to me..This particular woman wanted to tell me that she has always been attracted to women and she feels repulsed by men in general.  All of her male relationships have been poor and none of them have lasted.  She said that she has had relationships with women that could have easily been physical but there was this *one* little thing that she just couldn't get past: the idea that she would have to perform oral sex on a woman..Wow.  You suffer through your entire life with men, knowing that you are more attracted to women, but you let a little thing like that keep you from enjoying a happy, fulfilling relationship with someone that you love?  My heart went out to her!.We are so conditioned to think in terms of roles that we have a hard time thinking outside of the box.  I told this woman that there will be many, many women who don't even want oral sex.  She seemed genuinely shocked -as if oral sex is all lesbians have to look forward to.  I know that we will have more opportunities to talk but it really opened my eyes to how little people give consideration to what they do have control over.  What is keeping YOU from getting what you want?

  GAY DATING NIGHTMARES -

we all have had them!
Check this out, by guest author Robert Kingett....

THE FAIR FAN

Text can show a lot of things about a person. When someone sends an email, it shows the reader three very important traits.
How articulate they are. Email requires thought in order to expand on
thoughts and if the message is short then the person can?t even think
their way out of a shirt.
Effort. If the person writes a long message then the person has a lot
of diligence and it shows that he can stay on task and get things done.
How deep their head goes. A long email shows more than what they want
to reveal, such as how deep their well is for example. Short messages
usually translate into ?there?s a lot of hot air in this blimp?
But Email can?t show you everything about a person and this is why
that initial phone call is important. This next contestant in my quest
to find my forever catches me on a Sunday.
Sundays are dangerous days for me, but not nearly as dangerous as my
wandering fingers when I?ve exhausted all work and have no video games
to play. My boredom, or hormones, finds me goggling at brown abs and
bulging arm muscles in the wee hours of the afternoon. I?m looking at a
stomach the color of brown sugar pulsating with biceps when a message
flies into my dating inbox. It?s very rare this happens so I eagerly
click into the message. The spelling and grammar is as flawless as a
tax-free society but the message is very short ? waving red flags at me
that I don?t see.
?Hi. My name is Jason. I recognize you. You?re a journalist. Love
your work. I want to chat more, Babe. Is that okay? Please say yes. I
think we should. I think that?s fair.?
I can hear the eagerness behind his message so I check him out. His
face is brown, as I hoped it would be, and it sports a smile that?s
brimming on being cute. He has a balled head, and I can see that he?s 10
years older than me. His smile is wide though and this tells me that
there are guys who enjoy having fun outside of the bedroom. Because the
fridge is being unusually quiet tonight I dish out my cell number like
it?s a lottery ticket and wait for the winning call.
Not even a minute later my phone vibrates. I answer it almost
expecting Denzel Washington to greet me and propose but what meets my
ear is a husky mesh of needy and overwhelming clinginess. There?s also
slurring in his voice that I don?t pay attention to because it?s deep,
and a baritone always gets me going. The pleasantries are out of the way
very quickly and we know a bit about each other. Before long, we?re
discussing what kinds of sexual acts we like to do, and then we focus on
each other and what we?d do to one another.
The entire time this is happening I try and throw in questions where
he?ll have to give me a detailed answer but he somehow doesn?t hear them
and proceeds to tell me what an inspiration I am with a slur behind a
few syllables. I notice how frequently the slur happens. A lull in the
conversation comes when he admits that he?s not a man?s man. He also
keeps asking me if random points he?s made are fair, like we?re having
an argument over the remote and he needs Jerry Springer to tell me that
he knows the buttons better than I do.
?Really?? I say, not shocked at all given the way he?s been telling me that I?m good looking for the past 45 minutes.
?Yeah. I?m not a mankind of guy. I don?t attract them very much. I want to listen to you more. Is that fair??

I don?t understand the question but I plow on before I idly remember
that I really should be turning in for the night because I have an
important meeting to get to in the morning.
?That?s a definite shame. I hate to be a prude, but, I have a meeting
I have to get to in the morning and I need my sleep.? The reply slams
into my ear with quick bursts of syllables, as if he?s dying and my
voice is a resuscitator.
?Listen, babe? I know you don?t like me, and I get it, no one does,
but please baby, I want to talk some more. I think you?re hot! Just stay
and talk. I want to talk. Is that fair??
?It?s not you. I don?t think you understand that I have a meeting in
the morning that I can?t sleep through.? There?s a heavy sigh on the
other end, followed by the unmistakable swigging of a bottle. I then
realize that he?s been drunk this entire conversation. I make even
louder noises about having to go, but the crying reply makes me stop and
gape.
?Please? baby, I?m an alcoholic, I get it, but I think that we
deserve to talk things over, is that fair? Is that fair? I mean, we?ve
both been alone so?? there?s another swig. ?We need to cuddle with one
another.?
?You know what? I agree!? I gaily squeal, and begin doing a Google
search on my computer. The slur is emphasized as he asks me where I
live. I tell him the address to Alcoholics Anonymous in Chicago, and I
give him their number instead of mine ? he?s forgotten mine already.
?Please call me tomorrow baby. I love you.? I say, hanging up the
phone knowing that I will never hear from this diplomat again. Given the
last hour, I?d say that?s pretty fair.
