Fairgrounds VIIII, Gay and Lesbian Day At Six Flags Great Adventure Sept. 14

Out in Events announced this week that Fairgrounds VIIII, better known as ?Gay and Lesbian Day at Six Flags?, will take place Friday, September 14 from 6pm until midnight at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ.  Fairgrounds is the largest private LGBT event in the United States.  This year?s theme celebrates the fabulousness of fist-pumping Jersey with celebrity appearances by Bravo-TV?s The Real Houswives of New Jersey stars Melissa Gorga, Joe Gorga and Greg Bennett.  Melissa Gorga will even perform her dance hits,  On Display and Rockstar.  Additional celebrity appearances include The Amazing Race?s Reichen Lehmkuhl and nightlife personality and recording artist Dina Delicious. DJs Steve Sidewalk, Seth Gold and DJ Barney of Philly will provide the musical entertainment.  A portion of the net proceeds will benefit the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Action Fund.

?We are going back to our roots and making this year?s event all about Jersey,? says co-founder Mark Nelson, the LGBT events planner and producer who helped found the annual Fairgrounds celebration.  ?New Jersey used to be the Jan to New York?s Marsha, but thanks to shows like Bravo-TV?s The Real Housewives of New Jersey and glittering stars like Melissa Gorga, the state has emerged as a mecca of fab-ulosity.   Break out the hair gel and spray tan and get ready to fist pump as we celebrate being gay ? Jersey style.?
Six Flags? Fairgrounds launched nine years ago at Six Flags Great Adventure. "It was wildly successful from the start", explains co-founder Gage Kristofer. Organizers estimate ten thousand gay men and women (and their friends) will attend Fairgrounds VIIII.   ?We welcome gay crowds from Washington DC, Boston, Pittsburg and the entire tri-state area.  Fairgrounds is truly a coming together of lesbians, twinks, Chelsea boys, bears, homo thugs, club kids, and more - all uniting with pride.?
?Last year saw an influx of gay newlyweds and gay families with their children,? he adds.
Even the stars are excited.  Says Greg Bennett, ?I love theme parks. I love gay people and I love Melissa Gorga!?

Protests Over Jennifer Lopez?s New TV Show...The Fosters

Anti-Gay Group Protests Jennifer Lopez?s New TV Show
By Shaun Knittel
Best Gay News Magazine Staff Writer

Anti-gay group One Million Moms is incensed about a new ABC Family show called The Fosters, which doesn?t even have an IMDb page or a finished pilot.

In August, ABC Family announced that they had green lit The Fosters, an hour-long drama executive produced by Jennifer Lopez and created by Bradley Bredeweg and Queer as Folk?s Peter Paige. The show will focus on a multi-ethnic family headed by a lesbian couple.

One Million Moms  (which is really  NOT 1,000,000 !)  has called the program ?anti-family,? posting on its website:

?A premiere date has not been set, but One Million Moms wanted to sound the alarm about this new series. It will be airing on the network soon unless we do something about it. They are in the beginning stages.

ABC Family reported the comedy-drama pilot, working with the title The Fosters, is about two women raising a ?21st century,? multi-ethnic mix of foster and biological kids. While foster care and adoption is a wonderful thing and the Bible does teach us to help orphans, this program is attempting to redefine marriage and family by having two moms raise these children together. One Million Moms is not sure how the explanation will be given on how the biological children were conceived. None of this material is acceptable content for a family show.

Hollywood is continuing to push an agenda that homosexuality is acceptable when scripture states clearly it is a sin. As Christians, the Bible also says that we must speak up against sin. If we remain silent then we are guilty of sin also.?

The group has urged its supporters to email ABC Family, telling the network that they will not watch the show. They also ask supporters to say they ?are prepared to join thousands of other voices in urging advertisers to place it on their ?do not advertise? list.?

This isn?t the first time One Million Moms has fixated on entertainment. According to Entertainment Weekly, the group has previously spoke out against NBC?s The New Normal, an Archie comic book featuring a gay wedding, J.C. Penney (for hiring Ellen DeGeneres as its spokesperson), and Ben & Jerry?s Schweddy Balls ice cream.

In addition, (according to the group?s website) its members are currently outraged about a Skittles commercial in which a teenage girl makes out with a walrus.

VIDEO: What President Obama told MTV about marriage equality, LGBT rights

WASHINGTON ? During an interview with MTV conducted Friday at the White House, President Barack Obama confirmed his support for marriage equality and LGBT equality.
Obama said it should be up to individual states to determine whether to approve marriage-equality laws and said he expected the courts to weigh in on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which he believes is unconstitutional.
The President noted that he originally supported civil unions, but that his opinion evolved as he spoke to same-sex couples who persuaded him that civil unions were not equal to marriage.

HARPO and OWN!   Netflix!  Neiman Marcus!!  Oh No!With no federal employment nondiscrimination protections for LGBT
people, and limited state protections, corporate America has taken the
lead on fair workplace policies. That sentence might make one say,
?Thank goodness for corporations,? but the truth is that it also puts a
burden on the LGBT consumer. We must seek out and support businesses that treat LGBT employees and their families with dignity and respect.
But how do we do that when businesses don?t post their employment
policies in their windows, and even if they did, who wants to read a
manual before walking into a store?Fortunately there is an easy way to determine which businesses support
LGBT equality, and it?s only a click away. The Human Rights Campaign
Foundation publishes the Corporate Equality Index annually. The CEI
rates the entire Fortune 1,000, the AmLaw 200 (the nation?s top
law firms) and other businesses on their equal employment opportunity
policies, employee benefits, organizational LGBT competency and their
public commitment to equality and responsible corporate citizenship. An
easy search at hrc.org/cei will
show you exactly which companies have shown a commitment to their LGBT
workers, and just as importantly, which companies have failed this large
segment of the workforce. There is also a great PDF you can read, the reveals a lot about the businesses - good and bad!So think TWICE, before giving your dollars to someone on the  NOT HERE side.

LGBT youth who are out are happier, but still face serious obstacles

Growing up gay is not easy, for any generation.
Baby boomers and their LGBT elders, for example, lived at a time when information about LGBT issues was almost non-existent and when there were no role models on television or in popular culture. Many of them grew up not knowing another gay person in their school or community ? until they moved to the big city and found a welcoming community in bars like the Stonewall Inn in New York City or The Club in San Diego.

?The good news is that unlike previous generations, many of today?s LGBT youth have someone in their life with whom they can be themselves,? said Chad Griffin, HRC president.

ACLU Asked Students to Report Censorship of Gay and Lesbian Educational Web Content

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: (212) 549-2666; media@aclu.org
NEW YORK - Public schools across the country overwhelmingly responded positively to the "Don't Filter Me" campaign to address discriminatory censorship of web content in public schools, the American Civil Liberties Union announced in a report today.
The report chronicles the conclusion of the campaign, which asked students to determine if web content geared toward the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities - a frequent target of censorship in schools - was blocked by their school's web browsers.
The ACLU found that most schools did not realize that, in addition to blocking all sexually explicit websites regardless of sexual orientation, their filtering software also contained a feature to block LGBT-related websites that were not sexually explicit. Students were blocked from accessing anti-bullying resources or websites about the civil rights of LGBT people, but could still access anti-gay websites that condemn homosexuality or oppose legal protections for LGBT people. After being contacted by the ACLU, most schools reconfigured the software so that students could access LGBT-related websites on a viewpoint-neutral basis.
"Public schools aren't looking for software that discriminates," said Joshua Block, staff attorney with the ACLU LGBT Project. "Schools want filtering software that blocks pornography while still allowing students to access diverse viewpoints and educational resources. They don't need or want software that discriminatorily blocks non-sexual LGBT websites."
The ACLU had to sue one district in order to fix its discriminatory software. That district, in Camdenton, Missouri was ordered by a federal court to reconfigure its software to stop discriminating against LGBT websites. The court held that under the First Amendment, public schools cannot use filtering software that engages in viewpoint discrimination.
The release of the report comes on Banned Websites Awareness Day and in the middle of Banned Books Awareness Week, which draws attention to censorship of literature and online resources in public schools.
"Just as a school library can't censor a book about LGBT people on the shelves, school web filters can't block access to pro-LGBT content online," said Block. "Barring access to all LGBT content sends a harmful message to kids that their school thinks being gay is shameful or inappropriate."
The campaign also prompted software companies to change their web filtering programs. Several software companies simply removed their special LGBT filters from the software and categorized all LGBT-related websites into generally applicable categories such as "history," or "politics." Other companies issued public statements and rewrote their category descriptions to make clear to public schools that the LGBT filters are not recommended for public school customers and do not have to be activated in order to block pornography or sexually explicit content.
Although the campaign is ending, the ACLU has provided a toolkit as an appendix to the report for students to advocate on their own behalves if their school blocks pro-LGBT content. Students are also encouraged to contact their local ACLU offices if their rights are being violated.
The full report can be viewed at: www.aclu.org/lgbt-rights/dont-filter-me-final-report

Parents and Doctors Sue Clovis School District Over Sex Education

Lawsuit is the first of its kind in California
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: (212) 549-2666; media@aclu.org
Fresno, CA – Today parents and physicians sued the Clovis Unified School District over its high school abstinence-only-until-marriage sex education. The lawsuit charges that the district is violating California law and putting teens’ health at risk by teaching students misinformation and denying them critical instruction about condoms and contraception.
The lawsuit is brought by two parents in the district, the American Academy of Pediatrics California District IX (AAP), and the Gay-Straight Alliance Network (GSA Network). The plaintiffs are represented by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), with pro bono assistance from the law firm of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP.
The textbook that Clovis Unified uses for high school sex education does not mention condoms at all, even in chapters about HIV/AIDS and on preventing STDs and unintended pregnancy. Instead, for example, the textbook lists that the ways to prevent STDs are to respect yourself, get plenty of rest, go out as a group and practice abstinence.
The curriculum teaches that all people, even adults, should avoid sexual activity until they are married. Additional materials compare a woman who is not a virgin to a dirty shoe and suggest that men are unable to stop themselves once they become sexually aroused.
“Our kids need complete, accurate information to help them protect themselves against STDs and unintended pregnancy. That’s information they’ll need at whatever point in their life they become sexually active,” said Aubree Smith, a plaintiff in the suit and mother of a 17-year-old daughter at Clovis High School.
“We can really save lives with comprehensive sex education. The Central Valley has high rates of STDs and unintended pregnancy. Sexual health education in schools is the only way to reach many teens and should be a place where they can get reliable health information,” said Tonya Chaffee, an AAP physician who treats teens needing sexual health information and care.
The rate of STDs among California teens has been on the rise over the last decade. In Fresno County teens account for nearly a third of chlamydia cases and a quarter of gonorrhea cases, both which can have serious health consequences if they are not detected and treated. Fresno County also has one of the highest rates in California of chlamydia infection among 15-24 year olds.
Teen birth rates are dropping across the state, but they remain high for rural areas. Fresno County has had one of the highest teen birth rates in the state for over a decade. The Guttmacher Institute reports that a sexually active teen who doesn’t use any contraception has a 90% chance of becoming pregnant within a year. “Clovis provides a top-notch education in so many ways, and it’s important that students get the most up-to-date sex education too,” said Mica Ghimenti, a plaintiff and the mother of three children.
A 2007 congressionally mandated report found that abstinence-only instruction did nothing to reduce teen sexual activity. The report also found that teens who received abstinence-only instruction were less likely to believe that condoms are effective in preventing STDs than students who had no sex education at all.
“The sex ed in Clovis high schools violates state law and gives inaccurate, biased information to students,” said Phyllida Burlingame, Reproductive Justice Policy Director at the ACLU of Northern California. “Schools should teach teens about building healthy relationships, the benefits of delaying sexual activity, and accurate information about condoms and birth control. That’s what state law requires and that’s what meets the needs of teens.”
This lawsuit is the first of its kind in California since the passage of the state’s 2003 law requiring that sexual health education in public schools be comprehensive, medically accurate, science-based, and bias-free. Comprehensive sex education includes instruction about condoms and contraception, as well as abstinence.
A 2011 report by the University of California San Francisco showed that although California's public schools have made great strides in the quality of sexuality education and HIV/AIDS prevention, many districts still fail to provide students with the complete, accurate information that they need and that the law requires.
The lawsuit was filed in California Superior Court in Fresno County. The lead attorney for the ACLU is Elizabeth Gill, staff attorney at the ACLU of Northern California. The ACLU of Northern California, the ACLU of Southern California and the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties are representing the plaintiffs, with pro bono assistance from the law firm of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP.
About the plaintiff organizations:
AAP is the leading organization of pediatricians who treat teens needing sexual health care and information. The GSA Network works to ensure that sex education is accurate and relevant for all students, regardless of sexual orientation.

Vancouver Queers :: Will You Be at Davie + Howe?

Vancouver is a-talking about what's coming to Davie & Howe in October and it's all the buzz.... Much speculation has been going around about what would be going into the prime intersection in gay-town. While I was glad to hear it's not going to be a Starbuck's or a BlockBuster or yet another Safeway, I couldn't get the skinny on what was coming to the location exactly. I'm super intrigued, though, as I like the way "whatever-it-is" is flirting with the gay community. What I Did Find OutIt's going to be a new Canadian brand and that they are launching in Vancouver before going national. News: Scissor Sisters, Chick-Fil-A's Gain, Mourdock, 'Cabaret'

This is awesome: Catholics for Marriage Equality
in Maine are running an ad this Sunday in which the coalition
celebrates same-sex marriage. Over 100 Catholics are attaching their
name to the missive.

From Christian Science Monitor: "In four
battleground states, glitches in electronic-voting machines could
produce erroneous tallies that would be difficult to detect and
potentially impossible to correct..."
Scissor Sisters are taking an "indefinite hiatus," but lead singer Jake Shears insists they're not breaking up.
Katy Perry wears her vote on her stomach.
The College Board reports that college now costs, on average, $17,860 a year.
Richard Mourdock stands by his remarks about rape victims not getting abortions because any pregnancy is "something God intended to happen". Though he says he "did not intend to suggest that God wants rape," "I would be less than faithful if I said anything other than life is precious, I believe it's a gift from god".
Meanwhile, Obama is keeping up his attacks on Romney's connection to Mourdock.
Marriage equality got a shout-out at Anne Hathaway and her talents pals' Cabaret celebration at Joe's Pub last night: "In deference to New York?s gay marriage law, Hathaway added that she
and [Audra] McDonald had decided to sing [the song "Married"] lovingly to each other. In one of
the show?s emotional highlights, they were joined by duets between
[Eddie] Redmayne and [Bryce] Pinkham, and [Linda] Lavin and [Harvey] Fierstein."

Don and Megan take Hawaii.
Former minor league baseball pitcher John Dillinger discusses coming out: "I felt like it was time and I wasn?t afraid of the unknown any more. I felt like people needed to know."
Inside Prof. James Franco's thought process.
Stacy Keibler thinks George Clooney is good at everything ever, which may be true.
The CW is getting relatively high-brow with a show about Mary, Queen of Scots.
Here's how Jessica Simpson reportedly reacted to an unconfirmed report that father Joe Simpson came out of the closet: "Jessica?s been trying to process the information slowly, but she?s
having difficulty dealing with it... Despite that, she?s going to stand by him and support
his decision."
Joe Simpson is denying the rumors, though.
"Guns, climate, gays missing in presidential race"
Chick-fil-A may be benefiting from CEO Dan Cathy's anti-gay politics. From ABC News: "The number of people who said they visited Chick-fil-A in the "past
month" increased 2.2 percent, according to a third quarter study by
chain restaurant market research firm Sandelman & Associates'
Quick-Track study. The research firm conducts research for all major
fast-food chains in U.S. media markets."

One has to wonder how the right will respond to this: "Scientists in Oregon have created embryos with genes from one man and
two women, using a provocative technique that could someday be used to
prevent babies from inheriting certain rare incurable diseases."
Equality California has finally wrapped up its year-long search for a permanent executive director and today announced John O?Connor will take the slot vacated by Roland Palencia.
Timothy Kurek, the man who pretended to be gay to learn more about his own homophobic attitudes, writes about his experience for Salon: "I found myself regularly going to a karaoke night, and so many gay
people attended, we called it 'Lesbaoke.' At first it made me
uncomfortable, but over time I found in that place a new home, where
everyone was the epitome of loving, and where the judgmental voice
inside of me was forced into silence."

Tagg Romney Apologized to Obama for Saying He Wanted to 'Take a Swing' at Him

Last week, Tagg Romney offered some headline-making remarks when asked by a radio host how he felt when Obama called his father a liar.
Said Romney:
Uh, you know, uh, well, jump out of your seat, and you want to rush down there to the debate stage and take a swing at him. But you know you can?t do that, because um, well first because there?s a lot of Secret Service between you and him?
After Monday night's debate, the eldest Romney son (to Obama's right in the photo above) reportedly apologized:
Sources tell ABC News that on stage after the debate last night, Tagg apologized to the president for the remark, a mea culpa the president quickly accepted. A source close to the Romney campaign reports that Tagg?s younger brother Josh, 37, notes that he has, in fact, taken punches from Tagg ? and that the president has nothing to worry about.

Smirking and Magical Thinking: There is too much at stake to entertain absolutes or allow lies to go unchallenged

Opinion: One of the wonders of our age is the persistence of ''Birthers'' and other True Believers who insist that Barack Obama is an Islamist terrorist mole bent on destroying America. They perceived an Angry Black Man behind the elitist smirk they spotted during the Oct. 3 presidential debate. They must have overlooked the smirks on Mitt Romney's face as he listened to the president. Republican smirks could be seen amid the post-debate consensus that an aggressive Romney had beaten a passive Obama. The theatrical aspects of the face-off trumped Romney's flip-flops and falsehoods. More conspiracy mongering was on view Oct. 5. After the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the unemployment rate had fallen to 7.8 percent, former General Electric CEO Jack Welch tweeted, ''Unbelievable jobs numbers..these Chicago guys will do anything..can't debate so change numbers.'' Sexy Fridays: When You Don't Like Penetration

I often hear from lesbians who don't enjoy certain sexual activities. "Is there anything wrong with me?" they want to know. Especially if they're newly out, they wonder if they'll be able to find someone who is compatible. This week I got a letter from a young lesbian. She's had sex with men before and didn't like penetration. She has a fantasy of what it's like to be with a woman, but wonders if her preference for not wanting things inside her makes her weird.

Federal Marriage Amendment Still A Cornerstone Of Romney's 'Values'

After last week's debate, Mitt Romney adviser Bay Buchanan told The Advocate's Julie Bolcer that the former governor thinks marriage equality should be left to the states. "He very much supports traditional marriage, but he's also a very strong advocate for the Tenth Amendment. It's a state issue," said the openly gay sister of Pat Buchanan. She also reportedly said Romney would not try to stop any state-based marriage rights fights. BuzzFeed's Chris Geidner wonders today whether this means that Romney, one of the candidates who signed the National Organization for Marriage's pledge to fight for a Federal Marriage Amendment and also a NOM donor, is changing his tune to appear more moderate. Romney does, after all, have a habit of adapting policy to fit a political climate. "The decision to stop supporting the proposed Federal Marriage Amendment would be a moderating move for the Romney campaign, whose party platform includes support for the amendment," writes Geidner. The Romney campaign did not answer his repeated requests for comment. There will be few opportunities to ask Mitt Romney whether he supports states' right or the conservative Federal Marriage Amendment, but if his website is to be believed, Romney's still firmly on the right.
From his campaign page called "Values":

Marriage is more than a personally rewarding social custom. It is also critical for the well-being of a civilization. That is why it is so important to preserve traditional marriage ? the joining together of one man and one woman. As president, Mitt will not only appoint an Attorney General who will defend the Defense of Marriage Act ? a bipartisan law passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton ? but he will also champion a Federal Marriage Amendment to the Constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman.

GLAA and Stein Ready for Races: With endorsements and ratings, LGBT groups assess the Nov. 6 field with Mendelson coming out on top

News:
When it comes candidates courting LGBT votes, the District enjoys an abundance of office seekers and incumbents. Several candidates running for political office tested their mettle before the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club Oct. 9 and came away with the endorsement of one of the city's top political clubs.
According to Stein rules, a candidate for office must receive 60 percent of the votes cast by members in good standing to receive an endorsement. Leading the way was Phil Mendelson (D), current chairman of the D.C. Council, running for a first full term since being named to the position by his peers following the June 6 resignation of former Chairman Kwame Brown (D), who pleaded guilty to bank fraud and violating District campaign finance laws.
''I thank Stein Club for your support over the years. I'm glad to have partnered with you on issues important to you over the years, and I hope to have your support tonight,'' Mendelson said in a speech detailing his record on LGBT rights to those assembled at the Metropolitan Community Church of Washington, D.C., for the Tuesday meeting.
Following his speech, Mendelson, who faces Democrat Calvin Gurley in a special election added to the regular Nov. 6 ballot, was later endorsed by acclamation. No representative from Gurley's campaign was present at the meeting.
At the time of the Stein meeting, another major LGBT group, the nonpartisan Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, D.C. (GLAA), held its own meeting to rate candidates for major local offices. The ratings, which are based on candidates' responses to a GLAA questionnaire and what is known of their records on LGBT issues, are graded on a scale of -10 to 10. While the GLAA ratings process is exhaustive, the group makes no endorsements.
In the race for D.C. Council chair, Mendelson rated a perfect GLAA score of 10, based on his questionnaire responses and his longtime record as an advocate for LGBT rights, particularly in his role as chairman of the Council's Judiciary Committee, where he has proposed LGBT-friendly legislation ranging from marriage equality to adoption rights for same-sex couples. GLAA gave Gurley a rating of 1, noting in the group's posted assessment that Gurley submitted a ''weak questionnaire and showed confusion on numerous issues.''
By a 69-30 margin, Stein members endorsed Vincent Orange (D-At Large). According to Stein President Lateefah Williams, the decision to endorse Orange, the sole Democrat in the race, allows the group to consider endorsing one of the other candidates for the second at-large seat on the ballot. Stein will hold a follow-up endorsement meeting for those candidates, including incumbent Councilmember Michael A. Brown (I-At Large); independent challengers David Grosso, A.J. Cooper and Leon Swain Jr.; Statehood-Green Party nominee Ann Wilcox; and Republican nominee Mary Brooks Beatty.
Stein members also endorsed Shadow Sen. Michael D. Brown (D) with 86 percent of the vote; while incumbent Councilmembers Yvette Alexander (D-Ward 7) and Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) fell well short of the 60 percent threshold, earning 34 and 31 percent, respectively.
For the Board of Education slots, Stein members chose to endorse Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Jack Jacobson (ANC 2B04) for the Ward 2 seat with 90 percent of the vote, and incumbent member D. Kamili Anderson for the Ward 4 seat with 65 percent of the vote. Both are running unopposed.
In contested Board of Education races, Stein chose to endorse longtime LGBT and Ward 8 activist Phil Pannell for the Ward 8 seat over incumbent board member Trayon ''Tray'' White with 72 percent of the vote. Stein also endorsed former schoolteacher Karen Williams for the Ward 7 seat over a trio of challengers, only one of whom, Villareal ''VJ'' Johnson, was present to address the group. Williams earned 63 percent of the votes.
In the at-large Board of Education race, Stein members chose to endorse incumbent Mary Lord over challenger Marvin Tucker, with Lord receiving 81 percent of the vote.
GLAA does not rate candidates for Board of Education races, but did bolster Stein's rejection of Barry and Alexander, giving each a rating of -3.5, primarily for voting against marriage equality and for supporting permanent ''prostitution-free zones,'' which critics say are used to profile and harass transgender people. While Alexander's questionnaire was criticized as ''weak,'' Barry did not submit one. GLAA also weighed Alexander's introduction of an amendment to D.C.'s 2009 marriage-equality bill that would have gutted the D.C. Human Rights Act as it pertains to sexual orientation, and of a bill that would have mandated HIV testing for those applying for marriage licenses. GLAA also considered Barry's participation at a rally opposing marriage equality.
Barry's opponent for the Ward 8 Council seat, independent Jauhar Abraham, did not submit a questionnaire and has no record on LGBT rights, earning him a zero rating. Alexander's Republican challenger, Ron Moten, did not submit a questionnaire but earned a 1.5 for his work with LGBT youth in the ''Check It'' gang and for speaking at the vigil for murdered transgender woman Deoni Jones.
GLAA previously ranked Councilmembers Evans and Bowser, who are unopposed in November, rating them 8.5 and 6.5, respectively.
Where Stein and GLAA diverged the most was on the at-large Council seats, with GLAA going after Orange's record on LGBT rights. According to GLAA's explanation of ratings, Orange ''showed no understanding of the issues.'' The group also knocked Orange for leading efforts to undermine the District's medical-marijuana program; to introduce restrictions on dance clubs in Ward 5, where gay-owned businesses were promised they could reopen after being shuttered to make way for Nationals Park; and to make prostitution-free zones permanent. Orange's final rating was .5.
Statehood-Green Party nominee Wilcox earned a .5 rating for her work representing GetEqual and Occupy D.C., but did not submit a questionnaire. Brooks Beatty, the Republican, did not submit a questionnaire and has no known record, earning her a zero rating.
Meanwhile, GLAA praised independent candidate Grosso for submitting a strong questionnaire and for supporting LGBT concerns while working for Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and former Ward 6 Councilmember Sharon Ambrose. Grosso's rating, 9, was the second-highest rating, after Mendelson's perfect score, of all 2012 candidates in either the primary or general elections.
Michael A. Brown, whom GLAA praised as a ''consistent ally'' on the Council, earned a 7.5 rating based on his record and strong questionnaire responses. GLAA gave A.J. Cooper a 4 for his questionnaire and work with LGBT youth to combat HIV/AIDS, and gave the same rating to Leon Swain for his questionnaire, but noted that Swain had little in the way of a record on LGBT issues. ...more

Supes' S.F.-style welcome for archbishop

Supes' S.F.-style welcome for archbishop

San Francisco's new Catholic archbishop, the Rev. Salvatore Cordileone, will take office Thursday at a Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral - and if he hadn't already figured it out, Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting made it clear that he's likely in for a rough ride.

Helping hand: A $1 million infusion of cash will launch a new dropout prevention program for Bay Area high school seniors, offering high-tech and corporate internships through the nonprofit Genesys Works.

The cash is part of a $250 million pool of money from the AT&T Aspire initiative to support programs across the country that offer disadvantaged and at-risk students support to finish high school and offer opportunities beyond.

"With (the AT&T) support we can change the life trajectory of vulnerable students who live in one of the most advanced regions in the world and help them believe a professional, meaningful career is within reach," said Rafael Alvarez, founder and CEO of Genesys Works.

Baby Love

"Baby Lu" is the first feature film to be helmed by writer/director Emily Ray Reese. Baby Lu is a queer coming of age story set in a tiny out skirt town of Taos, New Mexico. Lucinda, a thirteen year old girl, is growing up under a well intentioned but unequipped single mountain man father. When an intriguing new woman moves to town, the two of them must grapple with new emotions and the confusion of Lucinda?s burgeoning sexuality.   For the past 5 years, Emily has directed over 5 short films including "Cecilia" a queer film that screened at Outfest, Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film, and Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival amongst many other queer film festivals around the world.1) How is Baby Lu different from most queer stories? The story of Baby Lu is inspired from my own unique upbringing in rural New Mexico. Growing up with my own mountain man father presented an array of experiences and challenges, which came to a head when I entered my teens and even more so when I realized I was gay. While it was difficult to speak with my  father growing up, we always had a way of tacitly communicating when he?d take me fishing or hunting. These moments bonded us forever, even though we could never openly discuss my sexuality.New Mexico and it's culture of hunting, fishing, and "living off the grid" is a unique world that is rarely explored in cinema and we've never seen a film specifically tackle coming of age and coming out in that region. The environment and the history of the region really enriches the story and sets an incredible backdrop for this queer story.2) What excites you about writing/directing Baby Lu?I have always felt like an outsider between the two worlds that I live in. I had different values then the hunting, gun loving community I grew up in yet I love that way of living. Now that I am an adult and have become a part of a very progressive and queer friendly community here in Brooklyn, I still however feel that I have to balance the politics of my upbringing with my current community. My goal for Baby Lu and it's story is that it can inspire some empathy that will allow us to identify similarities between both cultures. I hope that by seeing the world through Lucinda's eyes, I may be able to bring these opposing worlds together to cultivate dialogue and forgiveness.3) What's one thing you've learned that would be helpful for first-time writer/directors?Collect an amazing team of collaborators! Honestly it takes a village to make a film and your movie will only be as good as those you have chosen to work with. Assemble your team according to those who's work you respect and who's company you enjoy. Once you have people on board you have to trust them to do their jobs.            And you must love your story! If you don't believe in it no one else will.           4) How can people get involved or support the project?          The most helpful act at this point would be to donate what ever you can to our kickstarter campaign and then tell everyone you know about what we are             doing and inspire them to donate as well! Our kickstarter campaign is set with an ambitious goal of $50k and so far we have raised a whopping $30k! With less than 8 days left, we need to expand our network and reach as many people as possible so we can reach our goal and begin production this fall.                    To see more about Baby Lu and support our campaign please visit our kickstarter page at: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/185154191/baby-luTwitter: @babylumovieWebsite: emilyrayreese.comFacebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/BABYLU/199449416817549

SNL = Saturday Night's Lesbian?

Congratulations to Kate Mckinnon for being the first openly gay human to be on SNL :) Thank you to my pizza pie Sarah for letting me know!MSN had this to say: "Saturday Night Live" has increased their collection of XX chromosomes by adding Upright Citizen's Brigade sketchtress Kate McKinnon to the show. McKinnon, formerly of LOGO's "Big Gay Sketch Show," becomes the fourth female in the current cast and will make her Studio 8H debut on the April 7, Sofia Vergara-hosted episode. McKinnon has done several UCB solo shows and has cast herself in delightfully demented roles. McKinnon also becomes SNL's first openly lesbian cast member, one who outed herself at a church-sponsored theatre camp. "I was speaking in front of 250 people and thought 'Wouldn't it be wacky if I came out during this speech,'" she told OutImpact. "It was scary but it was fun."She sounds fun. Now if only they could get a black woman on the show, we'd be good!

Knights of Columbus Are Anti Gay Marriage

The Knights of Columbus, a wealthy and influential Catholic charitable organization, is a leading funder in the push to make same-sex marriage illegal in four states that have ballot measures on the issue this fall, a coalition of gay rights groups announced Thursday (Oct. 18). The Knights have contributed millions of dollars directly to several of the campaigns to stop the legalization of gay marriage and have channeled money through other Catholic groups. They also have provided extensive financial support to the National Organization for Marriage, according to the Human Rights Campaign, one of four advocacy groups that compiled the research."This report mentions $6.2 million donated by the Knights over the past
seven years, during which time we also donated more than $1 billion to
charitable causes, with more than $225 million of that coming from our
Supreme Office."READ MORE

Which Member of One Direction is Gay?

Which Member of One Direction is Gay? Are there any gay members of One Direction? Do any of them actually know themselves? Take a look at the history of boy bands with members coming out as gay.

Irish boy band Westlife star Mark Feehily declared he was gay and in a relationship with Kevin McDaid, who used to be in boyband V. Westlife memebrs fully supported Mark as did Westlife's fans.

Irish boy band Boyzone were the biggest boy band in Britain - six number ones, 10 million albums, sold-out arena tours with a not a dry seat in the house - and Stephen Gately was (secretly at first) gay. Sadly Stephen passed away last year from a congenital heart problem.

Lance Bass from US boy band N-Sync came out in 2006.  "I knew that I was in this popular band and I had four other guys' careers in my hand, and I knew that if I ever acted on it or even said (that I was gay), it would overpower everything," said Bass at the time, referring to bandmates Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick, JC Chasez and Justin Timberlake.

Jonathan Knight from US Boy Band New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) is reported by Perez Hilton as gay. Johnathan dated a Brazilian model (Kyle Wilker), until he spilled the beans on his boy band boyfriends.

UK boy band Take That have no out gay members. Robbie Williams has joked many times about being gay but has sued The Mirror for libelous reports about his sexuality.

McFly are very cool and very supportive of their gay fan base. The boys recently got their willies out on the stage of gay London club institution G.A.Y. The one on the left is particularly cute. He has an amazing body.

So which one of One Direction do you think is gay?

The one in purple?

The One Direction boys are working very hard on the X Factor to make it in the tough world of music. I'm sure they will do well winning or otherwise. They really don't need speculation on their sexuality, but they are sure going to get it.

JLS last year's X Factor definitely all look straight. It will be interesting to see if a boy band every has an out gay member from the get-go.

Comments  please guys!
