Australian Gay Couple Has Two Sets of Twins Via Surrogates

Australia's Herald Sun reveals what happens when you mix two gay men, two surrogates, and a feritility doctor:
The couple, known only as Tony and Brett, revealed their unconventional family to the nation last night after bringing the babies home from India. The couple told the Nine Network they started the surrogacy process in 2009, flying to Delhi to meet a fertility doctor. After a number of failed attempts, doctors recommended two women be implanted with four eggs from donors and fertilised with the men's sperm, they told A Current Affair.
The paper adds: "They paid $130,000 to realise their dream of having a family, with each surrogate paid $6000-$7000. The men said they would be the best parents they could be and were not fazed by judgments from others."

Study finds more gay characters on network TV

NEW YORK (AP) – The number of gay and bisexual characters on scripted broadcast network TV has risen slightly this season to 23 out of a total of nearly 600 roles, according to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

The 15th annual “Where We Are on TV” report released Wednesday found that 3.9 percent of actors appearing regularly on prime-time network drama and comedy series in the 2010-11 season will portray gay, lesbian or bisexual characters.

That’s up from 3 percent in the 2009-10 season. The increase in 2008-09 was 2.6 percent.

Only six of the 23 gay and lesbian characters this season are nonwhite, GLAAD found.

Using information provided by ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and CW, the group reviewed 84 scripted series announced…

Ellen DeGeneres Sat Here

I was at a garage sale this weekend and came across these chairs. I thought they would be good for my deck. The guy was selling them for $7 each. Way too much. I offered $10 for all four. He countered with $15 and I accepted. As I was getting ready to load the chairs into my car, he told me Ellen DeGeneres sat in one of them. He said he used to work as a waiter at the Heathman, a high-end hotel in Portland. Ellen and Ann Heche were having drinks on the patio and invited him to come back when his shift was over and have a drink. He said Ellen was very nice.I was glad to hear that, but I told him he could keep the Ann Heche chair.

The protesters were cited and released.

Relationship Expert: My family is supportive – but they tell gay jokes

Question: So I am a openly gay teenage boy and for the most part my family is supportive. However, I get really bothered because my family, especially the males, will always be making gay jokes and using the word, "gay" as an insult.

Yet whenever I go to try to talk to them about something serious like being bullied or how I feel about a guy - or even try making a joke myself - they act shocked. This makes me feel like all I am to them is a joke and that they don't take me as a person seriously.

Should I really feel this way or is it normal behavior? Also are there things I can do to help open the communication lines and let them know how it makes me feel?

[1]

This is definitely a tough position to be in.

As a teenager you don't have much power, especially if you are financially dependent on the males to whom you are referring. Usually as a therapist, I would encourage you to tell these males how you feel - that it hurts you to have them do and say the things they do.

However, for these males, that might ignite more jokes or shocked behavior. It might not be safe to talk to them directly. Not knowing the situation, I would not want you to find yourself in a position where these males feel antagonized and can harm you or put you out of the house.

The way you feel is perfectly normal and I would be worried if you did not feel the way you do.

That said, the behavior of the males you are referring to is the norm, unfortunately, for the male culture. Males are socialized to turn their backs on identifying with anything feminine, thus under-developing qualities like sensitivity, connection with emotions and empathy for the way they make others feel. It is common for males to unite against another male who does not follow the patriarchal rules of our culture and who is embracing anything that is characterized as "feminine." Those who do not follow masculinity rules set by patriarchy are punished profoundly.

You said that for the most part your family is supportive. My suggestion is to talk to these supportive women and men in your family and see if they understand how you feel. Ask them to help you as an ally to talk to these males about the fact that you don't like the way you are treated in the family.

Most importantly: it is very serious that you are being bullied. It is imperative that you seek out the supportive family members whom you talked about and tell them that within the family you are not able to achieve peace and respite from the very thing which happens to you outside the family.

Is there a counselor in your school you can talk to? Is there a Gay/Straight alliance that you could attend for support? The males you speak of in your family may not be able to handle that right now and avoiding them might be the best answer.

Ignoring and avoiding are not always the best solution, but again, since you are a teen it might be what you have do. Instead, stay connected to those in your family who are safe and trustworthy.

It takes about four hours to fly to Key West, Fla., depending on the length of your likely layover in Miami, but once you arrive on this palm tree-studded island, you'll feel like you've landed in another world. ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ injunction now up to judge

SAN DIEGO, Ca (AP) – U.S. government lawyers are trying to stop a federal judge from issuing an injunction that would immediately do what President Obama has yet to accomplish so far in his first term: Halt the military’s ban on openly gay troops. Now it is up to U.S. District Court Judge Virginia Phillips to decide if she is willing to do that.

The White House says the legal filing Thursday by the U.S. Department of Justice attorneys in a federal court in Riverside follows government procedure by defending an act of Congress that is being challenged, but it does not detract from the president’s efforts to get ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ repealed.

“This filing in no way diminishes the president’s firm commi…

“This is gay San Francisco. An inside look at the life of San Francisco’s homosexuals. They number 90,000— at least according to police department figures. They work to hide their sexual orientation by day, and only at night do they show their true colors.

The city’s downtown Tenderloin District is the home ground of the always visible segment of the city’s homosexuals and transvestites. The drag queens are here at Turk and Taylor.

So frequent were the fights between screaming queens in the 2 to 3 a.m. period that police — even in permissive San Francisco — had had enough, and asked an all night cafeteria to close by midnight.”

So began the 2005 documentary “Screaming Queens; The Riot at the Compton&rs…

The Politics of Personal Destruction

Politics is the systematic organization of hatreds, said Henry
Adams, whose statement is true but incomplete. Sometimes it?s not
all that systematic. Take the contest currently underway in
Virginia?s 32nd Senate District.
Patrick Forrest is running against incumbent Janet Howell.
Forrest is a Republican, which everyone knows. He is also gay. Not
everyone knows that, but some Democrats in Northern
Virginia?including Howell, Forrest says?are trying to educate
them.
Forrest says a number of conservatives have told him, ?We heard
you?re a homosexual.? He has told them he is, and has always been
openly gay. As Forrest tells the tale, they have said they learned
about it from Democratic volunteers, who also told them Forrest
?would be promoting the homosexual agenda in our schools.?
Nice.
That somebody is gay-baiting seems beyond dispute. Forrest?s
field director, Eric Newland, recorded a conversation with Kavita
Imarti, a precinct captain for the Democratic Party in Reston. On
the recording, made at a party earlier this month, a seemingly
drunk Imarti defends the tactic.
When Newland asks if ?it?s okay for the campaign to be telling
people? about Forrest?s sexual orientation, Imarti responds: ?Yes!
Because you guys are racist [expletives]. . . . You?re racist
[expletive-expletives]. You guys are prejudiced against someone
because of their sexuality. We are basically pinpointing your
prejudice.?
(Those People are always making sweeping generalizations about
other classes of people. Don?t you just hate that.)
The message to conservative Republicans, Imarti goes on, is:
?He?s gay! You guys say you?re anti-gay but you have a gay
candidate. What you gonna do now??
Imarti does not work for the Howell campaign, which
?categorically den[ies] we are sending any messages to Republican
voters on Patrick?s sexuality or otherwise.? Howell also told the
Washington Blade, the gay-oriented newspaper that broke
the story, she is ?deeply offended that Patrick Forrest would lie
like this.? Pretty emphatic. One of these two candidates is clearly
lying. Whom to believe?
When Newland asks Imarti if the whispers are ?coming from the
campaign,? she responds with an emphatic ?Yes!? What?s more,
Forrest claims two GOP lawmakers?State Sen. Mark Obenshain and Del.
Barbara Comstock?say Howell told them about his batting for the
other team. On the other hand Claire Guthrie Gastanaga of Equality
Virginia, a gay-rights group, finds the very idea that Howell would
do such a thing ?silly.?
Obenshain tells the Blade that Howell referred to Forrest as a
RINO, a Republican in Name Only. ?She ticked off three of four
things that would, I guess, indicate he was not conservative. . . .
including that he had a partner.?
Howell?s role in the current contretemps is murky. Other angles
on the story, however, are not.
First, the Virginia Republican Party still displays considerable
hostility to gays and lesbians. That hostility is indefensible.
Second, the GOP?s homophobia will disappear as more Republicans?
family members and friends come out of the closet. Just look at
Vice President Dick Cheney. He has a gay daughter, Mary?and he
supports gay marriage. Probably not just a coincidence. Perhaps
nothing would do more good for the cause of tolerance in Virginia
than to have an openly gay member at every meeting of the House
Republican caucus.
For one thing, such a member could point out that there is no
?homosexual agenda.? That gays and lesbians are not trying to
convert unsuspecting children to their ?lifestyle.? That trying to
stop the relentless bullying of gay and lesbian teen-agers is not
part of some sneaky recruitment drive.
The GOP lawmaker might even share with his party colleagues the
words of comedian Liz Feldman: ?It?s very dear to me, the issue of
gay marriage. Or as I like to call it: ?marriage.? You know,
because I had lunch this afternoon, not gay lunch. I parked my car;
I didn?t gay park it.? Some of them would probably get it.
The third important angle to the Forrest-is-gay story is this: A
person?s sexuality is his business. Nobody else?s. This point is
all too sadly lost on the state?s GOP, which fails to understand
that much of the alleged homosexual agenda boils down to a
politically conservative message. Isaiah Berlin described it as
negative liberty. Less cerebral thinkers would put it this way:
Leave people the hell alone.
Final point?this one for state Democrats: One person?s prejudice
does not give anyone else a free pass to exploit it. The South used
to have a gawdawful lot of racial bigots. Many of them didn?t know
any better. But the national GOP did?and yet it developed the
?Southern Strategy? of exploiting that prejudice. The party?s
pursuit of short-term political gains led to its lasting shame.
(Six years ago, Republican Del. Brad Marrs accused his opponent of
accepting ?another big donation from a wealthy homosexual
businessman.? The accusation backfired, and Marrs lost.)
Likewise, Democrats in Northern Virginia know better than to
harp on a candidate?s sexuality. Doing so might bring them
short-term gain. But playing to homophobia is a form of
participating in it.
To paraphrase Imarti: You guys say you?re pro-gay, but you?re
running an anti-gay whisper campaign. What you gonna do about
it?

The Gay Marriage Debate

Six states and the District of Columbia have legalized gay
marriage. Most so-called liberals are happy about that. Most
conservatives are not. As a libertarian, I think all consenting
adults who want to commit to a life partner ought to be treated the
same way.
To air this issue on my Fox Business show, I invited Brian Brown
of the National Organization for Marriage and David Harsanyi,
libertarian columnist at The Blaze.
Brown says gay marriage threatens marriage between a man and a
woman. I asked him to explain.
"Marriage is a public good," he said. "When you redefine
marriage, you redefine it for everyone. In states that have
redefined marriage, we've seen serious consequences, ranging from
what is taught in schools?kids in first grade in Massachusetts are
taught that it's the same thing to grow up and marry a boy or a
girl?to what happens to religious organizations or organizations
that just believe marriage is the union of a man and a woman. ...
You see Catholic Charities' adoption agency essentially being
forced out of being able to adopt kids because the state said it is
discriminating."
Whoa. Those are three separate points. I don't see a problem
with the first: If they redefine marriage to include gays, that
doesn't diminish my marriage. And if kids are taught that
gay marriage is OK, so what?
"They're being told that their parents' views are essentially
bigotry," said Brown.
It's another reason we should have school choice.
On his third point, if a state tells Catholic Charities they may
not honor their beliefs and limit adoptions to straight couples,
that's a problem of Big Government, not gay marriage.
Harsanyi says he has a way around the whole fight.
"It is a mistake to allow government to define what marriage
should be, gay or not. It should get out of the business of
defining marriage at all and let people engage in ... a private
relationship."
OK by me. Who needs the government's sanction anyway?
"When you're getting married, you are not thinking, 'Wow, the
government has endorsed this relationship.' That is not very
romantic."
I pointed out that marriage involves many legal issues,
including alimony, child support, hospital visitation rights,
inheritance, and adoption.
"Within five minutes of my idea coming to fruition, a whole
industry would be formed with prefab legal documents that would
just allow you to have the sort of relationship you want with the
parameters you want legally," Harsanyi said.
You'd work it out as a private contract. Some hospitals would
say we allow same-sex couples; others would say no.
"More than that, I would say in the contract that my spouse is
allowed to visit me in the hospital."
Brown was unconvinced.
"The state's interest in marriage is that this is the
institution by which we create stable families where the kids can
be connected to both their mother and their father. ... In states
that have gone this direction, we see things like attempts to
recognize three parents, because there is a biological father and
two mothers."
Again, so what? I don't care if there are three fathers and six
mothers. If it's a stable relationship and the kids are connected
with their parents, that's great.
"Deconstructing marriage is a very bad idea," said Brown. "We
see the rising rates of divorce and unwed motherhood. There is a
direct correlation. If you look at any social indicators?children
raised without mothers and fathers?you see higher rates of
incarceration, juvenile delinquency that cost the state money."
Sorry, but I still don't see what divorce and unwed motherhood
have to do with gay marriage. It's mostly straight people who are
doing the divorcing and unwed mothering.
"All of that ... started long before anyone brought up gay
marriage," Harsanyi said.
"The state should support what is true and good and beautiful,"
Brown countered. "And it's true and good and beautiful that
marriage is the union of a man and a woman. Men and women are
unique and special."
I still don't get his argument.
And I definitely don't want the state to decide what is good and
beautiful.

Leading the Way: WWH announces grand marshals of 25th AIDS Walk

News:
Ahead of the 25th annual AIDS Walk Washington, taking place Saturday, Oct. 29, Whitman-Walker Health has announced three grand marshals for the fundraiser benefiting WWH and ''community partner'' affiliates. The three, Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward 1), Joseph Anthony Izzo and Maudie Jones, all have histories with the walk that go back to its 1987 launch.
''AIDS Walks were happening in New York and Los Angeles, principally,'' recalls Graham, who headed the organization as Whitman-Walker Clinic from 1984 to 1999 and under whose direction AIDS Walk Washington began, initially as a co-sponsorship with the Human Rights Campaign Fund (now Human Rights Campaign). ''Obviously, we were very anxious to improve our fundraising situation. And it was great in terms of visibility. It was an opportunity to call public attention to the epidemic. It worked extremely well.''
Jones, a retired Army nurse, helped care for AIDS patients in the 1980s, and brought her two children to walk with her in 1987. Izzo, a Whitman-Walker psychotherapist, has worked there through the entire history of the walk, not missing a single one, which he does in part to honor his partner, a decades-long survivor of HIV/AIDS, and for the many patients and clients he's lost to the disease. He's also hoping his high-profile spot this year may help him bring attention to a sentimental effort of his: finding AIDS Walk Washington T-shirts from 1988, 1991 and 1994 to 1998. He's already offered the remaining shirts to a close friend who is a master quilter with plans of incorporating all 25 shirts into a quilt to memorialize the walk.
WWH's announcement of the grand marshals included comment from the group's executive director, Don Blanchon.
''These three grand marshals, symbolizing three decades of the epidemic, were not only there at the start; they've seen firsthand the progress we have made in 25 years,'' he said, in part. ''We hope that their stories of perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds to reach a brighter future will inspire people today to continue to work toward a day when this walk will no longer necessary.''
Chip Lewis, WWH deputy director of communication, says AIDS Walk Washington is his organization's largest one-day fundraising effort. WWH has set a goal this year of raising $1 million.

Denmark to Allow Same-Sex Marriage Next Year

The Danish government announced plans to legalize same-sex marriage, the Copenhagen Post reports:
The government plans to introduce a bill just after the New Year that will allow same-sex couples to hold weddings in the Church of Denmark and be ?married? under Danish law. Same-sex couples are currently allowed to have ?registered partnerships?, a civil status, but are barred from marriage and church weddings.?The first same-sex weddings will hopefully become reality in Spring 2012. I look forward to the moment the first homosexual couple steps out of the church. I?ll be standing out there throwing rice,? the new church minister, Manu Sareen, a Social Liberal, told Jyllands-Posten newspaper.Sareen?s appointment as church minister was one of the more controversial of the new coalition government.
Not surprisingly, certain religious leaders are unhappy:
Some local priests, like Henrik Hjlund, who is the parish priest for Lsning and Korning and chairman for the Evangelical Lutheran Network (ELN), however, disagreed with the minister.?Lots of people are mistaken in thinking that homosexual weddings are just the next step after female priests. But it is much more consequential and beyond the boundaries for normal Christianity,? Hjlund told Jyllands-Posten.?The Church of Denmark is being secularised right up to the alter in a desperate and mistaken attempt to meet modern people halfway,? he said, adding that same-sex marriage would be ?fatal for the church?.

Shared History: After 25 years on 17th Street, JR.'s is an institution for both the neighborhood and the gay community

Opinion: My first trips to D.C. while I was still a college student in southwestern Virginia were particularly strong indicators of what a country boy I really was. For a 19-year-old who grew up surrounded by open fields, cow barns and combines, Washington seemed huge. The 12-story buildings, broad state avenues, tightly packed townhouses and rage-inducing traffic jams, while all small in comparison to a megalopolis like New York City, still define for me what it means to live in the big city. Naturally, once I moved here I wanted to live in the gayest neighborhoods I could afford, which at the beginning meant not very gay at all – H Street in Northeast had yet to go through its urban renewal way back in 1990. It took a couple years, but I finally found myself living in the Dupont Circle neighborhood, just off 17th Street. So JR.'s, along with the many other restaurants and bars sprinkled along that corridor, was a big part of my young gay life in the city. Unlike Badlands or Tracks (or, later, Nation), nightclubs that I would hit on very specific nights every week — the rigidity of a '90s-era gay-nightlife schedule could approach the level of catechism – JR.'s was a place that offered more flexibility. It was my neighborhood bar, the place where you could meet friends after work for a drink, drop by on Saturday afternoon, and generally go when you felt like it. ... (more)

'...And their marriage is thanks to Arlan' - Guest Blog by Bren!

On Saturday I went to a Lesbian wedding. And it was awesome. And they had Ping Pong. And their marriage is thanks to Arlan.

Arlan and I go way back. I've been reading her stuff since almost the beginning, when I found her on Myspace (Anyone else miss Myspace like I do??) sometime during the fall of 2006. I had just come out and Your Daily Lesbian Moment Blog fulfilled my need to know everything I could about my newly discovered self.

(*Side Note* In October 2007 I met Arlan in a bar in WeHo and to this day I'm still disappointed she didn't hit on me. What, I'm not good enough for you, Mrs. McPhee?)

In July 2007 I posted something, somewhere on Myspace that I would be moving from BibleThump, Texas to San Francisco, California. Arlan came across that post and messaged me:

"----------------- Original Message -----------------
From: Arlan
Date: Jul 17, 2007 2:24 PM

ok now im curious...why are you coming to california? :-)

-arlan"

(Yes, I really did just log onto Myspace to reference that email)

We got to talking and I stated that the only Lesbian I knew was my ex, and that I didn't know a single soul in California. She suggested I remedy that by posting a blurb on her Myspace so I could meet people in California.

And Girl, did I!

Via that posting I met Jescas, who introduced me to such things as Shiny Toy Guns, South of Nowhere and Cheesecake Factory. You've probably seen Jescas' guestblogs or seen/heard Arlan mention her.

And I met Al, who shares my profound devotion to Dana Fairbanks, is always up for any off the wall adventure I suggest, and is one of my greatest confidants.

And I also met KK, one of the funniest and smartest people I've ever known; who on my 6th day in California took me to San Francisco's iconic Castro Theater to see the one and only, Ms. Margaret Cho.

(I knew then and there that KK and I would be lifelong friends. )

That night I met KK's friends Chief, Govoni, Miz Liquid (our token straight girl) and her man Regis (our token straight guy).

This group soon became known as DTO (Dykes Taking Over) when we hosted a joint birthday party called Dykewood (Deadwood fans, anyone?) complete with a life-sized teepee, hot-tub brothel, and cage-dancing jailhouse.

Through Govoni we met Sus, who invited us to a holiday party where we met Cor, Dean and Shea. A few weeks later a bunch of us went to a party at Cor's, and Dean and Shea brought their friend Mitch.

A few weeks later KK invited me to a Pimps and Hoes party.

(Me and my hoes)

Here I met Betch, whom KK had also met through Arlan's blog.

Fast forward 2 years later: I attended another party at Betch's: 80's Gay Prom

(This is me & my date Shalisha, whom I also met through...you guessed it, Arlan's blog)

I brought along Mitch, where she really hit if off with Betch's roommate Cass.

Fast forward another 2 years (that's now, btw) and Mitch and Cass got married. Thanks Arlan & YDLM!

(Here is myself, KK, KK's wife Chrissy, Chief, Chief's fiance Graz, Miz Liquid, Betch, Mitch, Cass, Sus, Shea, and a few others, at the wedding)

I've also met a few other people you may know through Arlan's blog. Anyone recognize these folks?

Arlan is like a real-life Shane. A Lesbian hub that rivals Kevin Bacon's 6 degrees.

Arlan knows what she's doing, Y'all. Myself and many others owe huge thanks to her for many of the connections we've made. So if you're looking to expand your social circle, find a job, or just ogle cute Lesbians, do yourself a favor and join up with her new matchmaking/networking site Juliet & Juliet.

And don't forget to send Arlan an invitation to your wedding!

You can find me on Juliet & Juliet and Twitter.

Video of the day: Bloomberg Spanish

NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg held a presser a few minutes ago, and it was broadcast on major media. It was unremarkable at the outset, noting it's too late to evacuate at this point, to take precautions using candles, etc. But then he decided to offer up a summary in Spanish. I want to give him props for trying, but it was so heinous that I burst out laughing. And I don't even speak Spanish. I can't imagine what that sounded like to native Spanish speakers. This is one for the ages; it's at least nice to laugh during what's a pretty tough time to laugh with Irene barreling up the Northeast corridor. Thanks @robrcb.

Bullying and Nasty Gossip Rears its Ugly Head Real Housewives Beverly Hills

Believe it or not, I was actually kind of appalled Monday night at Real Housewives of Beverly HIlls!   Talk about MEAN GIRLS!  OUCH!  Brandi Glanville made her first appearance on the Real Housewives of BH, and she came on crutches. Actually, she was fairly benign at Kyle Richards? charity party, leaving the bad behavior to the gaggle of tacky Housewives cackling meanly over the new girl?s choice of footwear. Who wears a stiletto when you?re on crutches?, they all cried. Had Brandi worn a Croc to the party, and had she not so recently been photographed with Vanderpump nemesis Cedric, perhaps the ladies would have been more welcoming. ?What is with Brandi?? said Taylor, sounding like a sick Mean Girl. ?Her husband left her for LeAnn Rimes,? said Kyle. ?That?s her claim to fame.?  - and a group of about 4 woman sat there and mad fun of Brandi and talked trash about her - AND she was close enough to hear it all, sitting within ear shot, I am sure she heard everything.  THIS IS THE ROOT OF BULLYING. This is the kind of shit that kids do. And these are tragic adults still pointing fingers saying we're better than you. Kyle and Taylor, you should be ashamed of yourselves, you pathetic, tragic  women!
While Brandi and fellow newbie Dana Wilkey aren't considered "real" Housewives just yet, the  rookies have plenty to say about their castmates and sat down with E! News to exclusively dish on their claws-out catfights and what "craziness went down" that made Brandi pull her kids from the show...
Because of a controversial incident during filming, we won't see much of Brandi's two kids with Eddie Cibrian. Despite her ex-husband's opposition, Brandi says, she allowed her sons to be featured on the show -- until some "craziness went down."
"Once something happened that I wasn't comfortable with," the mother of two reveals, "I pulled the plug."I think Adrienne Maloof is the only one with any class on that show.

Tennessee High School Student: Principal Assaulted Me for Wearing T-Shirt Supporting Gay-Straight Alliance

(Updated 10/6/2011)
ACLU Demands Protection for Students’ Rights to Free Speech
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: (212) 549-2666; media@aclu.org
MADISONVILLE, Tenn. – A 17-year-old senior at Sequoyah High School was reportedly shoved, bumped in the chest and verbally harassed by his principal last week for wearing a T-shirt in support of efforts to establish a gay-straight alliance (GSA) club on campus. In response, the American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Tennessee sent a letter to the school district today demanding that students’ rights to free speech be protected in the classroom.
The ACLU has been assisting the student, Chris Sigler, in his and other students’ efforts to overcome resistance from school officials to establish a GSA. Principal Maurice Moser had previously threatened to punish students who circulated petitions about the club.
“It is totally unacceptable that a young man who was peacefully exercising his First Amendment rights would have his speech shut down by the public school principal,” said Hedy Weinberg, executive director of the ACLU of Tennessee. “Last week’s incident clearly illustrates the hostile environment LGBT students face at Sequoyah High School. Given this context, it’s especially important that supportive voices like Sigler’s can be heard in order to overcome the school’s resistance to a GSA.”
Sigler wore a homemade T-shirt to school last Tuesday that said “GSA: We’ve Got Your Back.” A teacher ordered Sigler to cover up the shirt in the future. Sigler, knowing he had a right to wear the shirt, wore it again Friday, and resisted an order to remove the shirt. Sigler says that Moser then ordered all students out of the classroom, except for Sigler’s sister Jessica, who refused to leave. According to both students, Moser then grabbed Sigler’s arm, shoved him, and chest-bumped him repeatedly while asking “Who’s the big man now?” Sigler’s mother reported that when she arrived at the school, she saw her son seated in a desk with Moser leaning over him and shouting in Sigler’s face. The Siglers filed a report about the incident that afternoon with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.
“All I want is to have a GSA at my school to help stop the bullying against gays and lesbians and their friends who support them,” Sigler said. “The shirt was a way to use my voice and show my support for the club. The way I was treated shows even more why we need a GSA here.”
“All students deserve a safe and respectful learning environment. Harassment, abuse or censorship of any student – regardless of sexual orientation – is absolutely reprehensible as well as illegal,” said Amanda Goad, staff attorney with the ACLU Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Project. “We expect the police to investigate this quickly and fairly, and take statements from all witnesses who were present.”
The demand letter to the school district can be viewed here: www.aclu.org/free-speech-lgbt-rights/letter-director-monroe-county-schools
Take Action! Send a message to the school board with the ACLU of Tennessee here: http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/o/6147/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=4824
Correction: An earlier version of this press release indicated that the Siglers filed a report with the Madisonville Police Department. It has been corrected to reflect the correct agency, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.

New Yorks LGBT Homeless Need Help Now

The Ali Forney Center, the nation?s largest organization working on behalf of homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth, today released a compelling new video viewable online in support of the Campaign for Youth Shelter.  The video, outlining the stark facts of the plight of LGBT homeless youth in New York, was released to promote an October 24 rally in Union Square, at which New York?s LGBT community will demand shelter for all youth in the city.  Watch  video Among the key points featured in the video:In New York, an LGBT youth is eight times more likely to experience homelessness than a straight youth.LGBT youth who are homeless face a significantly higher risk of HIV infection, suicide, and physical and sexual assault than their homeless straight counterparts.40 percent of all homeless youth in NYC are LGBT, according to a 2008 census conducted by the Empire State Coalition.Despite the scope of the problem, in 2011, both Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Cuomo have proposed drastic cuts to services for homeless youth.
Said Carl Siciliano, founder and Executive Director of the Ali Forney Center: ?We hope that this video will promote awareness of the terrible peril that LGBT youth face when left homeless in the streets. With the recent spectacle of elected officials taking budgetary actions to endanger and abandon homeless youth in New York City, we hope the rally on October 24th will send a loud and clear message that the LGBT community demands that they be protected. No youth should be left in the streets without shelter."
The October 24 rally will be held in Union Square, beginning at 6 PM.   It is in support of the Campaign for Youth Shelter, and is being planned by representatives from the Ali Forney Center, the Bronx Community Pride Center, Congregation Beit Simchat Torah, Green Chimneys NYC, the Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn, and Queer Rising.
Information on the rally and the Campaign for Youth Shelter online.
The Ali Forney Center (AFC) was started in June of 2002 in response to the lack of safe shelter for LGBT youth in New York City. The Center is committed to providing these young people with safe, dignified, nurturing environments where their needs can be met, and where they can begin to put their lives back together. AFC is dedicated to promoting awareness of the plight of homeless LGBT youth in the United States with the goal of generating responses on local and national levels from government funders, foundations, and the LGBT community.

The Pink Beat, 21 September 2011

Welcome to the first installment of ‘The Pink Beat’. In this brand new/revamped (formerly known as 'We Are Everywhere') column we will keep you up to date on what is hot, and not so hot, in the world of lesBian news.

First up, something that is incredibly hot; though we know we haven’t been keeping you all up to date as much as we should on the Ana and Teresa storyline from the Spanish soap Amar en Tiempos Revueltos (look for retro recaps real soon!), we are happy to report that, after departing to Santander happily ever after, they made a special appearance in the show’s sixth season and are still happily ever after!

Hop on over to onemorelesbian.com to watch the scene or, if you are completely out of date, re-watch the entire storyline. While Hand Aufs Herz and Jemma may not grace our screens anymore, it doesn’t mean Lucy Scherer (Jenny) and Kasia Borek (Emma) are out of work. Kasia has been scooped up by another soap; Anna und die Liebe (remember Jasmin and Lily?) to play Olivia Kosmar. Kasia has already started filming and her scenes should be airing starting October 21st.

Now let’s hope that those who vowed never to watch Sat1 again after they cancelled Hand Aufs Herz, will continue to not only support Kasia, but HaH script writer-producer Petra Bodenbach joined as well! Meanwhile Lucy will once again grace the stage in the play 'Rebecca’ where she will play the lead “Ich” (“I”).

It is no surprise that Lucy is returning to the stage as she has said it is one of her great loves and even before Hand Aufs Herz got cancelled, there was speculation that Lucy would be going back to the stage.

Lucy will be going back to the same stage where she originated the German version of Glinda the Good Witch in “Wicked” and with a familiar partner by her side; Thomas Borchert, who played with her in ‘Tanz Der Vampire’ (Dance of the Vampires), will play her husband. To watch some photos of the two (and pretend Thomas is really Kasia), you can go to the official Facebook page.

Festival News

For those of you going to the Dutch Film Festival (Nederlands Film Festival) might be interested in Bumblefuck, USA by Dutch filmmaker Cat Smits.

Distraught by the suicide of her gay friend Matt, Alexa travels from Amsterdam to her dead friend’s small American town, hoping to uncover the reasons that led Matt to take his own life. She arrives with a backpack, her video camera and intentions to make a film about what it must be like to be gay in Bumblefuck, USA. At the end of her hot summer weeks in Bumblefuck, she’s made a new special friend, clashed with others, and ultimately discovered more about herself than she could ever have imagined.

While the screenings for September 22 are sold out, there are still tickets available for the 25th. You can go to filmfestival.nl to buy them.

If you are not able to visit the Netherlands, no worries – Bumblefuck, USA will be at Chéries-Chéris LGBT Film Festival in Paris in October and at The Barcelona International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival 2011 in November.

Be sure to keep an eye on eurOut.org for more information on both festivals.

In web series news… Out With Dad just aired episode 6 of their second season, Working it Out

Unfortunately for us, this is their mid-season finale and last episode of 2011 as they are going on a hiatus.

“Why? As you know, Out With Dad is a labor of love for all of us involved. Yet, it costs us all money and time… and we’ve stretched ourselves very thin with our ambitious second season. – Director Jason Leaver.”

Leaver said there will be a fund-raising campaign and we’ll keep you up to date on that as well to assure that one of our favorite online shows will hopefully have a swift and rocking return.

While Out With Dad is taking a hiatus, Emma Stahl seems to be moving forward.

The upcoming German web series is not only re-casting the lead, but has just added actress Antje Hamer for the role of Catharina Laville, EuForce Attorney.

Dirty Cleats: Predictions for NFL's 2011 Week Seven

After six weeks, only one undefeated team remains, the Green Bay Packers and quite frankly, I am not surprised.
This week has some important match-ups ? my favorite two are Atlanta vs. Detroit and San Diego vs. the New York Jets.
The teams with a bye this week are the: Bills, Bengals, Patriots, Giants, Eagles, and 49ers
My Predictions for Week Seven

Jana sees lots of boring match-ups this week, including one scheduled in a prime-time slot. She also has a couple favorite couplings she is eager to watch after seeing her Dolphins a pounding last Monday night in person. She also thinks Dolphin fans will give a warm welcome to someone not on their own roster, this week.

Matt Bomer Not Sure How to Get His Junk into His Thong Properly: VIDEO

Lots of essential breaking news coming out of the production of Magic Mike, the Steven Soderbergh-directed film about Channing Tatum's early life as a stripper, starring a brat pack of male flesh.
Said Bomer to MTV News about his stripper role:
"There's something about throwing a thong on in front of other peope that just instantly forms an ensemble...I had never worn a thong before. So, the first time I tried it I put it on wrong and my junk didn't fit in it. I had to call a wardrobe person in and go, something's wrong with my thong you guys. I think we're going to have to figure this out' and they go 'yeah, your legs are in the wrong holes.'"
He added: "A lot of tear-away clothes. There's definitely a technique to making sure you get those off cleanly."

If you can't make it to Mexico this winter for a warm-weather getaway, at least you know you can find plenty of authentic Mexican cuisine right here in soon-to-be snowy Chicago. One of the latest to join the ranks of the city's Mexican eateries is Mitad del Mundo, which opened earlier this month in Logan Square.

The Pink Beat, 6 October 2011

Good afternoon! The Pink Beat here to keep you up to date with the latest in hot and not so hot news involving lesBian news!

First up, let’s give a happy belated birthday to Kate Winslet (Heavenly Creatures) who celebrated her 36th birthday yesterday!

A ton of Jessie J news today, with some Corrie birds mixed in! The out singer topped the wins at The Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards in Glasgow last night.

Jessie got a near full house receiving four of the five awards she was nominated for; Best Song, Best Album, Best Act and Best Newcomer.

Best part of it all? The award was presented to her by two actresses we are very familiar with: Coronation Street’s own Brooke Vincent and Sacha Parkinson.

If presenting the award to Jessie J wasn’t enough, Brooke Vincent channeled a little Sophie Webster and called Sacha ‘Sian’ before quickly correcting herself. Don’t believe me? See for yourself!

Speaking of the Corrie gals; guess who returned on October third! Yup, that’s right. Sian and Sophie in all their adorable glory. Head on over to onemorelesbian.com to watch the scenes.

Guess who supports the rights for gay marriage? Yup, that’s right. Prime Minister Cameron.

"I once stood before a Conservative conference and said it shouldn't matter whether commitment was between a man and a woman, a woman and a woman, or a man and another man," he said.

"You applauded me for that. Five years on, we're consulting on legalizing gay marriage. And to anyone who has reservations, I say: Yes, it's about equality, but it's also about something else: commitment. Conservatives believe in the ties that bind us; that society is stronger when we make vows to each other and support each other.

"So I don't support gay marriage despite being a Conservative. I support gay marriage because I'm a Conservative."

It may be a couple of months away, but the organizers behind London’s World Pride 2012 are working hard! They recently launched a competition for the LGBT community to direct the event’s creative vision.

What exactly does that mean? In short; it means that your theme could be THE theme for the 2012 World Pride and can be seen by the hundreds of thousands that the organizers are expecting.

WorldPride will be taking place in Trafalgar Square and Soho on Saturday 7 July 2012.

Now I know this has nothing to do with Europe other than Glee being shown in numerous countries, but how HOT does Naya Rivera look here!

That’s it for The Pink Beat, check back soon for another installment!

Lesbian Couple of 30 Years Arrested in North Carolina After Being Denied Marriage License: VIDEO

Last week I wrote about North Carolina's 'We Do' campaign and the protests that have been going on to raise awareness about inequality in that state.
On Friday, Rev. Kathryn Cartledge and Elizabeth Eve, her partner of 30 years, were arrested after refusing to leave the office of the Buncombe County Register of Deeds after being denied a marriage license.
Check out an amazing video from the 'We Do' campaign showing their arrest, AFTER THE JUMP...
Qnotes reported:
The civil disobedience was the culmination of a two-week-long campaign organized by the Coalition for Southern Equality and comes as campaigns form to defeat an anti-LGBT state constitutional amendment on marriage and civil unions. About two dozen same-sex couples have been denied marriage licenses over the course of the group?s ?We Do? Campaign. The group organized several couples in requesting the licenses each weekday since Oct. 3.Coalition for Southern Equality Executive Director Jasmine Beach-Ferrara has described her group?s campaign as a social justice movement. She says it is time to demand full equality for LGBT people.
