Outed on Amazon.com

No Warning...I let my daughter handle the deets when it came to writing her book, Ashway.  She signed her own contract (her dad reviewed it) and had it edited by someone else.  In fact, I still have not read it because I was trying to buy a case at a wholesale price and was not able to get anywhere with the publisher on a timetable that I could live with.  So today, I went to Amazon to order a copy.  (You can get your own by clicking HERE)Ooooh!  There are 2 reviews (5 stars by verified purchases) and wow - they have a thing where you can look on the inside and also see the back cover now!  How exciting... a short author bio!  And I LOVE that pic of her.  Oh, she mentions being homeschooled.  How adorab....Wait.Did my kid just OUT ME AS A LESBIAN ON AMAZON.COM?!?!Fuck yes, she did! No warning.  Nothing.  THIS is how I found out.  Damn her introvertedness...

Former Secretary of the Army, Clifford Alexander:

“The policy is an absurdity and borderline on being an obscenity. What it does is cause people to ask of themselves that they lie to themselves, that they pretend to be something that they are not. There is no empirical evidence that would indicate that it affects military cohesion. There is a lot of evidence to say that the biases of the past have been layered onto the United States Army.”

Iraq War Veteran and U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, challenging a witness during “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” hearings in the U.S. House:

“You’re basically asserting that straight men and women in our military aren’t professional enough to serve openly with gay troops while completing their military missions. You know as a fo…

US judge: ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ unconstitutional

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A federal judge said she will issue an order to halt the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, after she declared the ban on openly gay service members unconstitutional.

U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips ruled Thursday that the prohibition on openly gay service members was unconstitutional because it violates the First and Fifth Amendment rights of gays and lesbians.

The policy doesn’t help military readiness and instead has a “direct and deleterious effect” on the armed services by hurting recruitment efforts during wartime and requiring the discharge of service members who have critical skills and training, she said.

The Log Cabin Republicans sued the federal government in…

Serving in silence….

While many Americans are unable to find immediate work in this current economy and as we as a country try to rebuild after billions spent on a never ending war, you would think our government would need all the help it could get. Not apparently from GLBT service members though, all living under the threat of joining the countless other Americans who are unemployed.

Those who defend our freedoms on foreign borders do not ask very much in return from us. They feel the need to serve their country even when their country refuses to support them. They fight alone most of the time hidden away from themselves and others they rely on, hoping no one suspects that they are GLBT. It goes without saying that to live two different lives under the best of circumstances i…

Kenny Kardashian says:

I, too, served in the Navy and also swore the same oath, not really knowing what lay ahead. While for most people, being gay is dangerous I was lucky to experience minimal discrimination and teasing. However, I was not immune from such teasing. Everyone at my shore duty facility at Naval Air Staton North Island in San Diego knew I was gay and while I made a risky move, when people asked, I told. However, there was no one running to the officer in charge. Most the people that asked me said they were “cool with it”, or others simply just knew.

I am not the most butch guy in the world, but my feminine mannerisms and the way I was did catch the attention of some few people in leadership chain of command around me. They woul…

Some of my best work, I'd say.Now you may have heard the little rumor circulating that Rihanna and Ashton Kutcher are dating because some weird paparazzi peops stalked her and realized that she went to his new house from midnight to 4am recently. Whatevs. I think they'd make a really cute couple, but how is that proof of anything? By that logic, CVS and I have been dating for YEARS. People have sex during the day too, ya know. Anyhoo, Rihanna was asked about it by a very bold reporter in London today, and this is what she had to say:...and this whole post is really just an excuse to show THIS again:You are welcome.

San Diego lesbians rock!

There was a time in San Diego’s rich history when lesbians were not as visible or held in the same esteem in the GLBT community as they are now. At times discounted and thought to be too small a group to warrant advertising dollars, they were also considered too different from gay men to be influential or to hold any positions of power. This was also a time when there was little or no nightlife catering for lesbians and the few lesbian clubs out there had come and gone. They simply could not compete with the gay bars and the numbers that they attracted. Going beyond nightlife there were few resources for lesbians or places that lesbians could gather, socialize, have fun and be in the majority.

Fast forward and it is apparent that this has really chang…

Dear Editor,

In honor of National Coming Out Day (October 11, 2010), we at Affirmations would like to take a moment to reflect on the continuous benefits to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community (LGBT) brought about since Michigan’s recently passed smoke free law has been implemented.

During the coming out process, many people seek to connect with the LGBT community for support, encouragement, networking and socializing. It is wonderful for the LGBT community to now socialize and connect at bars and restaurants in Michigan without facing the dangers of second hand smoke.

Historically, statistics have shown that the LGBT community is 50% more likely to start and/or continue smoking compared to its straight counterpart. We are hopeful …

January 2012 - Life on the road (and my own bed)

I've been wanting to share a lot that's happened over the last 5 or so weeks with you guys, but it seemed so overwhelming because I didn't know exactly where/how to start. Yesterday I read a musician's blog and what she does is summarizes her work by the month. So a few days into a month, she'll write about the preceding month. I dig that, so I shall henceforth be stealing this idea from Hannah:)I won't bore you with ALL of the details of how I got to this point, but basically, I spent months and months in my early-mid 20s booking and tour managing some of my indie friends' tours. This was thousands of miles traveled, several hotels and friends' couches crashed, and lots and lots of gas station food partaken...ofeth. All of this was of course after spending weeks booking the actual shows one by one, and talking to people with names like 'Snake' and 'Timber' asking if my friend(s) could play at their venue. For every show I booked, I got at least 10 'no's. I also heard hundreds of 'no's when I was publishing my music magazine INTERLUDE.So things haven't always been easy and I've spent plenty of time sleeping on the floor, the couch, and every once in a while, in beds. All the while though, I've been networking and making friends in various production roles, at various levels of success. The tenacity paid off when just a couple of days before New Year's, I was asked to help out with the production of a show out of town. The artist was CeeLo Green, and the show was the headlining Allstate BCS Fanfest event in New Orleans. So on New Year's Eve, I watched my new boss sing during the NYE countdown in Times Square, and a few hours later, I was hard at work helping to advance his next show.It was in New Orleans that I met CeeLo, the Goodie Mob, and CeeLo's incredible band for the first time. They're all amazingly talented and some of the nicest people I've ever met. The city was SO full of energy during these few days in particular because of the big game, and aside from being physically exhausted from all the work we did, I was on cloud 9 the entire time. I also got to meet this cool performer named DJ Ruckus. You guys should check him out. He is a REALLY sweet guy, and kinda blew my mind with how talented he is.(New Orleans stage during soundcheck!>(CeeLo's lighting/video director Fraser and me after the New Orleans show...right outside our production office/backstage area)I flew back to my new home in Houston for a few days to work on the next shows...and then it was back in the air. I can already tell that this year I will probably spend more time in the security line at airports than in my own bedroom. But do you see me complaining? Nope! And if you ever do, please feel free to slap me about my person.January was capped off the same way it started: EPIC...ly. Or whatever.I was flown to Miami and Montego Bay, Jamaica for 2 big shows. Miami's show was at the Fontainebleau hotel in their venue LIV and Jamaica's was the Jazz and Blues Festival where CeeLo was Saturday night's headliner. Friday night's headliner was Celine Dion! I definitely got spoiled with our accommodations that week and I'm not sure I'll know how to do anything without wearing a plush robe and having room service every 3 hours now that I've tasted the good life. I was also in the same room with Bobby Brown for a couple of hours while a Jamaican lady sang a 45 minute Whitney Houston medley to about 25k people...needless to say it was all sorts of awkward, but thats another story for another time. Anyhoo...I love robes!(My awesome view from my room in Miami)(The view from the hotel's private beach....cause THAT happens)It's pretty awesome to get to see everyone at the top of their game. Everyone in this team comes in ready to work hard, do their thing, and then celebrate just as passionately. I dig the pace of it all. And I think I'm going to like it here. I feel like Annie just moved into Mr. Warbucks' place and having a look around.(My view of soundcheck in Jamaica, mon!)While I was at the hotel in Jamaica, I saw these two chicks playing pool. My dar went into overdrive. I said to myself, I says 'Self...I spy homosexuals.' And Self agreed with me. But we were in Jamaica which isn't very lezzy friendly, AND I didn't wanna just walk up to them and say "LESBIANS!...welcome." No, this wasn't Weho, after all. So I did what any self-respecting gay blogger would have done: I walked up to them and I said 'If I said 'Shane is my homegirl,' would it mean anything to you?" They paused...stared at me for a while--enough time for me to be frightened even though they were a good 6 inches shorter than me and I could TOTALLY outrun them--and then one of them said, "HELL YEAH IT WOULD!" and we all hugged. It was awesome!! I recommend it as an icebreaker at your local deli or Jamaican hotel situation.Oh and did I mention everyone is British?? Well, not everyone. But like...more than half of the people I deal with are incredibly English and it rocks my world. Here are background singers Annabel and Jodie. The girls were drinking TEA. Can't make this stuff up!Not sure what's on the horizon for February and the rest of 2012, but I do know it will be filled with experiences I've never had before, new friends, hard work, hard play, and more robes than you can shake a robe at!

GaymerX has relaunched under the new more inclusive name GX: Everyone Games and are currently running a new Kickstarter campaign to finance the third annual LGBT gaming convention to be held next year in the San Francisco bay area.
"We've become more and more aware that not all of our attendees identify with the 'gaymer' label. And while we love all our gay dude friends, we realize there are more people than that who want an awesome space to hang with their friends in a safe and diverse environment. We want to make sure we represent everyone who feels like they've been left out of mainstream gamer culture," the organizers said of the name change.
The GX3 Kickstarter is aiming to raise $80,000 ? roughly half of the cost to put on the event ? and has already raised over $18,000. Last month, GaymerX2 was held in San Francisco and included gaming parties, inclusive conversations and panels, and out WWE Superstar Darren Young appeared as a Boss of Honor.

How have gay men interacted with and regarded lesbians, and vice versa

Would like insight and education into the various ways that gay men -- both as individuals and as a group, both historically and currently -- relate to, regard, and interact with gay/lesbian women, and vice versa. [I've tried to be thoughtful in my wording, but I've not had all that many occasions in my life to discuss LGBT topics. So I'm nervous that I might misspeak or expose my ignorance. If I do please correct me and accept my sincere apologies.]

Looking for in-depth readings and histories and seminal texts that would give a good overview of these group dynamics. I'm most interested in learning about the U.S. in the 20th/21st century, but if there are pieces that also address this dynamic in other cultures or other times, then all the better.

My (uninformed and simplistic, and possibly irresponsible) perceptions -- and here is where I'm afraid of sounding like an ass -- are that while the two groups have had every reason to form a coalition in the ongoing struggle for their safety and their civil rights, it doesn't seem to me that there is all that much overlap in their various subcultures' interests or arts or patterns of consumption or recreation -- it just doesn't seem like they have that much in common outside of their shared struggle.

Looking, also, for feminist critics' assessment of any patriarchal systems at work within the gay/lesbian cultures.

I know that there will no doubt have been a spectrum of opinions and a healthy, ongoing internal debate; I'm not afraid of readings that address or embrace this complexity.

Are there seminal works addressing this relationship? Great essays? Contentious works of art or fiction? Watershed academic studies? I'm very willing to read long-format or challenging pieces.

Many thanks... and again, please, please correct me if I've said anything ignorant; I'd consider it a huge kindness to me if you would.

‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ injunction now up to judge

SAN DIEGO, Ca (AP) – U.S. government lawyers are trying to stop a federal judge from issuing an injunction that would immediately do what President Obama has yet to accomplish so far in his first term: Halt the military’s ban on openly gay troops. Now it is up to U.S. District Court Judge Virginia Phillips to decide if she is willing to do that.

The White House says the legal filing Thursday by the U.S. Department of Justice attorneys in a federal court in Riverside follows government procedure by defending an act of Congress that is being challenged, but it does not detract from the president’s efforts to get ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ repealed.

“This filing in no way diminishes the president’s firm commi…

Moving to Austin. What next?

My partner and I plan to move to Austin, Texas, in January. We?re looking for recommendations about neighborhoods, information about the housing market, or any other useful information. Traits of our ideal area, in no particular order:
* Bicycle friendly.
* Close to transit lines.
* Funky and weird.
* Inexpensive.
* In the city limits.
* Mix of people, such as different ages.
* Relatively cohesive neighborhood.
* Relatively quiet (I am hypersensitive with sounds).
* Has stuff within walking distance ? for instance, grocery store, pool, park, library and restaurants within about a mile.

About us:
Early 50s women. No kids. Three cats and a dog. We have a variety of interests, but not spectator sports. Two cars, but we?d like to use them less. No jobs lined up yet. I might work in journalism or government, but am also interested in coworking.

About housing:
Looking for two or three bedrooms at a moderate price. Expect to live there the rest of our lives. Plan to buy a home but might rent for about six months first. Open to different types of housing (such as condos, townhouses, mobile homes, cohousing) but probably not apartments.
We live in a small town in a house with 1,700 square feet. It has three bedrooms and 1.75 baths. The house was bought for $140K six or seven years ago. Last year, it was appraised at $180K. We hope to sell it for $160K to $175K.

Our questions:
* Are there any areas you recommend?
* Are there any areas we should avoid?
* How does the housing market compare?
* Where is the ?gay ghetto??
* Are there any neighborhood newspapers?
* Is there anything else we should know?

One Direction will appear at GAY

The tabloids are full of One Direction shots as this week the X Factor is now down to 9 contestants. One Direction are going to be the next Take That. The act which is voted off always appears in Londons biggest gay club, GAY thanks to an amazing coup by Jeremy Joseph. It does go to show that X Factor considers its gay audience an important sector to back the acts. Sharon Osborne always used to say that boys bands like One Direction should definitely get the gays behind them (although I think she meant it metaphorically not physically).

We might go to see One Direction at GAY

San Diego needs its own Housing Hero
Big Bad Banking got some really BAD NEWS last week as Mother Jones Magazine’s Andy Kroll broke the story of huge law firms, known as “foreclosure mills”, operating in Florida (and elsewhere) engaged in the potentially illegal taking of millions of homes.

GMAC -a subsidiary of Ally Financial was so worried it suspended foreclosure evictions and sales altogether. Rising Democratic Party star Rep. Alan Grayson along with his Ohio colleague Marcy Kaptur have been among the few voices in Congress for homeowners in the ongoing class war waged against them by Wall Street. It seems now they were right all along. You may remember Kaptur as the take-charge legislator who advised homeowners in her Toledo-area district to demand that banks produce th…

Anonymous transphobic Wikipedia edits linked to an IP address in US Congress

According to reports from the Twitter account congress-edits, which tracks when anonymous Wikipedia edits are made from IP addresses associated with Congressional office buildings, someone in a US House of Representatives office building has been making transphobic edits to the page about Netflix series Orange is the New Black. The page, which identifies actress Laverne Cox as a transgender woman portraying a transgender character, has been edited to claim that she is a "real man pretending to be a woman," and references an extremely offensive article that ran in the anti-LGBT outlet, The National Review, about Cox.
The same IP address has been tracked making problematic edits to other transgender-related pages, such as a page about Camp Trans, the annual event protesting the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival's so-called "womyn-born-womyn intention," and another page about transphobia. Pages on gender identity disorder and Gavin McInnes, the writer whose transphobic Thought Catalog article resulted in an "indefinite leave of absence" from his own ad agency, were also reportedly edited from the US House IP address.
"It's chilling to think that this dangerous misinformation about transgender Americans could be coming from our nation's Capitol," said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. "At a time when transgender people still face horrific rates of violence, trailblazers like Laverne Cox are helping millions understand that ignorance like this can have life-threatening consequences."??

Obstacles: Turning Away the Uncomitted

I saw this on my Pinterest feed a few days ago and it made me think about obstacles in relationships.  I think that obstacles can serve two purposes in a relationship: To spur growth between the people in the relationship - as they overcome obstacles, they grow closer, build trust and have a strengthened bond.To weed out the uncommitted.  Spurring Growth When I was married to a man, our first few years together were difficult.  Not in a relationship sense, but financially.  We struggled to pay bills and had to get very creative.  I learned how to cook, we began composting, he took our trash with him to his office dumpster, we had rabbit ears that got us 3 TV channels and I went through my entire pregnancy in Georgia without air conditioning because the repair to our AC unit was too expensive. These obstacles could have torn us apart and we could have blamed each other for not earning more money or spending wisely, but we faced our challenges together as a team and did some fantastic problem solving.  It felt like each time we solved a problem together, we began to develop a deep and abiding trust.  He kept his promises to me and I grew to know him as a man of his word.  I knew that he always had my best interest at heart as much as he knew I had his.We were together for 23 years - until I came out as a lesbian and needed to take my own journey without him.  Today, we are friends and will always have fond memories of the life that we built together.  We are our children's parents and will always have a friendship that has survived the trauma that coming out later in life can bring.  Weeding Out the UncommittedUnlike my ex-husband, who was willing to be solidly on my team and committed to the core, you may find yourself with a "partner" who is anything but a partner.  My ex-husband rarely made me feel like he wasn't on my side.  In fact, the times where he solidly took my side are the times I remember that I loved him the most.An uncommitted person will act like they are on an opposing team when you must face an obstacle.  You hope they will be your ally - a person to go to that will help and offer advice and support.  But, no.An uncommitted person will rarely tackle a problem with you.  They avoid being involved and leave it to you to solve.  You may be attacked and blamed and the conflict may then be used as an excuse to alert you to your other failings as a human being.  (If you don't know what it's like to be kicked while you're down, these types of partners will gladly teach you.)If you have a partner who uses obstacles to show you where you are weak, blames you for the obstacle, refuses to acknowledge the obstacle (especially if it comes from their sphere) and/or gets tired of "dealing" with it, please know that I am so sorry for you. These people are "relationship lazy" - they love it when everything is going well, but they don't want to be a part of the work that it takes to maintain a good one.  Like everything else, things that are not maintained usually start to fall apart.  When they do, these people walk out looking for greener pastures (new partners).  Take Away:Let these people go.Do not fight to keep them in your life.  They will always want to flee in order to avoid doing the work of maintaining a relationship.  The blame game is the only one that they know how to play.  Instead, look for the people who wouldn't even consider using obstacles as a time to vent or tell you what about you angers them, kicking you when you are down.  You want someone who can communicate in a mature way, without feeling the need to blame or name-call; someone who can set aside their emotions for a moment in order to look for solutions that build relationship trust in the process. If you are lucky enough to find someone like that, don't YOU be the dumb-ass that is too lazy to maintain it.  You hold on to and care for that person like they are the best thing that ever happened to you.  Because, more than likely, they are.

We must straighten our backs…

We trusted that following conservative and STRAIGHT (for those Prop 8 supporters) Justice Phillips’ September 9th decision that “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” was unconstitutional on two counts, the Senate would vote to uphold the integrity of our Nation by voting for the repeal of this pathetic law. The House had done so in June, along with the Senate Armed Services Committee. Now, backed by an unconstitutionality ruling, certainly the Senate would end the ban once and for all.

Fail.

Instead, on September 21st Sen. John McCain (R-Az.), a POW and a former hero to many of us veterans, single handedly obstructed justice with a filibuster. Sadly, the Senate could not muster 60 Senators willing to vote to override him.

No more than two…

Which Member of One Direction is Gay?

Which Member of One Direction is Gay? Are there any gay members of One Direction? Do any of them actually know themselves? Take a look at the history of boy bands with members coming out as gay.

Irish boy band Westlife star Mark Feehily declared he was gay and in a relationship with Kevin McDaid, who used to be in boyband V. Westlife memebrs fully supported Mark as did Westlife's fans.

Irish boy band Boyzone were the biggest boy band in Britain - six number ones, 10 million albums, sold-out arena tours with a not a dry seat in the house - and Stephen Gately was (secretly at first) gay. Sadly Stephen passed away last year from a congenital heart problem.

Lance Bass from US boy band N-Sync came out in 2006.  "I knew that I was in this popular band and I had four other guys' careers in my hand, and I knew that if I ever acted on it or even said (that I was gay), it would overpower everything," said Bass at the time, referring to bandmates Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick, JC Chasez and Justin Timberlake.

Jonathan Knight from US Boy Band New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) is reported by Perez Hilton as gay. Johnathan dated a Brazilian model (Kyle Wilker), until he spilled the beans on his boy band boyfriends.

UK boy band Take That have no out gay members. Robbie Williams has joked many times about being gay but has sued The Mirror for libelous reports about his sexuality.

McFly are very cool and very supportive of their gay fan base. The boys recently got their willies out on the stage of gay London club institution G.A.Y. The one on the left is particularly cute. He has an amazing body.

So which one of One Direction do you think is gay?

The one in purple?

The One Direction boys are working very hard on the X Factor to make it in the tough world of music. I'm sure they will do well winning or otherwise. They really don't need speculation on their sexuality, but they are sure going to get it.

JLS last year's X Factor definitely all look straight. It will be interesting to see if a boy band every has an out gay member from the get-go.

It's back to school season! Campus Pride's annual listing of LGBT-friendly colleges released today

Just in time for back to school season, Campus Pride has released its annual listing of LGBT-friendly colleges today! Campus Pride, the leading national educational organization for LGBT and ally college students, has maintained an index of LGBT-friendly colleges since 2001 in order to help LGBT students and allies find welcoming campuses.
In addition, Campus Pride is going purple on October 16th for GLAAD's Spirit Day, a day where millions around the world go purple in support of LGBT youth and against bullying!
For the first time ever, Campus Pride has increased its annual list from the Top 25 to the Top 50 LGBT-friendly schools. Shane Windmeyer, Executive Director of Campus Pride and the creator of the Campus Pride Index, said:
?For six years in a row, Campus Pride has seen an increase in the number of campuses coming out as LGBT-friendly and making notable improvements to LGBT academic life, so we decided to honor 50 campuses with our national distinction. Today the Campus Pride Index has over 425 campuses featured online and for the first time ever we have 56 campuses who achieved the highest 5 stars overall rating, the largest number to date.?

According to Campus Pride, each college had to achieve the 5 stars overall rating as well as have the highest percentages across the 8 LGBT-friendly benchmarks for policy, program, and practice in order to make the Top 50 this year.
For the third year in a row, over 80% of the participating colleges improved their ratings from the previous year. In other exciting news, the number of campuses located in the South increased, in addition to the number of religiously-affiliated campuses and Minority Serving Institutions.
Windmeyer said:
?More than ever colleges today want to be viewed as LGBT-friendly and a welcoming place for all students. LGBT students and their safety impacts the recruitment efforts of the entire campus. Upper-level administrators are now understanding how LGBT-friendliness is key to future institutional success. This Top 50 list is proof.?

The new Top 50 in alphabetical order are?drumroll please?

Campus Pride is also launching a brand new Sports Index this year to assess college athletic departments on their LGBT-friendliness and inclusion. GLAAD is in partnership with Campus Pride for this project, and college sports administrators are encouraged to take this online assessment to make sure their campus gets listed.

About Muslim Tolerance

Hey yes, I believe in tolerance and support of Muslim Americans, but I have great concerns with their leaders. Silence…when it comes to the stoning of women in Muslim countries…of murders and killings of gays…of Muslim nations calling for the death of all Jews and the end of Israel …about Muslim countries prohibiting the building of any Christian churches or Jewish synagogues on their lands. Why do American Muslim leaders never speak out on these issues?? Tolerance…

Howard. Stern.

Liked him before. Simply ADORE HIM now. This is a MUST LISTEN. It's wonderful...honest, raw, passionate, TRUTH. On his show Monday, Howard Stern went on a 12-minute rant about the ?One Million Moms? campaign against Ellen DeGeneres, people who joke about Rosie O'Donnell being a lesbian, anti-gay politicians, and much more. It's worth listening to in its entirety.
