February 2012 - Life on the Road (and mostly my crib)

Hello hello! So here we are again. I started this special series of blog entries last month (Click here for Jan. 2012) and am happy to report that...well there is more to report. I have *words* to say about February which means the clock hasn't yet struck midnight on this little fairy tale I'm living.(My friend Adriana and I doin' a faux prom pic in the middle of a hotel in LA a few days ago. That's normal, right? Oh and although it definitely looks like it, she is NOT in love with me. Totally looks like it, though, doesn't it. Sheesh, no means no, lady!)Now don't get me wrong: the job I have (like I'm sure it is for most of you reading this) is a LOT of hard work. Truly. It's mentally and physically challenging and there are a VAGILLION moving parts and lots of high stakes gigs/days. But the good news is that I LOVE that sort of energy. I love high stakes. I love having a ton of responsibility and people looking to me for answers. I love still having so many questions, and being a sponge, soaking it all up each and every day. Cause I know one day I will be jaded. One day this will just be a J.O.B. I hope that doesn't happen for several decades and that when it DOES happen, I'm somewhere on a jetpack and it won't matter anyway:) So the point is, I don't take a minute of this for granted. And while January was chock full of gigs and jetsetting and ROBES (see link above), February was relatively quiet until the veeery end. I spent most of February in Houston working on a few things from home, watching Criminal Intent marathons, and gaining SO much weight all throughout and about my person. I also came across some old photo prints that I did years ago in a dark room and it really has me inspired to pursue photography more seriously than ever before.(My brother Alfred, hand printed)(This chick that used to work at my favorite restaurant in Dallas, Mother Mesquite's, hand printed)The last week in Feb, I got a call that we would have to fly to LA the very next day for a big CeeLo show in Hollywood. We spent a few days in rehearsal...(The band playing during rehearsals)...and I spent a few minutes staring at this sign that I came across...(No biggie, just where my wife Katharine Mcphee's mom teaches and coaches American Idol contestants and others, and where my wife got her chops back in the day. Yep. I was able to *go to there*.)SO, speeeeaking of women named after felines who I am married to, did you guys catch when my other wife Cat Deeley retweeted me in Feb? No? I'll show you:That was cool, right? Know whats even cooler? Days later when I find out that Cat Deeley not only has great taste in food, tweets, and Arlans, but she ALSO says yes to the best gigs. She HOSTED the show we did in Hollywood! Good thing I didn't realize this until the night before the show, or I'm pretty sure I would have hyperventilated days earlier and wouldn't have been able to make it to the show at all. All tolled, I spent about 6 hours in Ms. Deeley's tall, luxurious, babe-alicious presence, and I can tell you this: the woman is HOT, friendly, DAMN good at her job, and an overall pleasant individual to be around. Unfortunately I did not get to redeem myself and ask for her hand in marriage, because she's a lady and I'm a professional...aaand truth be told, anytime she'd look in my general direction, I'd giggle and turn into a bowl of jello. But next time, I'll be rock solid, my friends. ROCK. SOLID.(My view of part of soundcheck at Hollywood and Highland. New artist 'V' was preparing for her incredible duet with CeeLo. She sounded great!)You can see pics from the red carpet and the show itself HERE!So thats a wrap for February 2012. I now return you to your regularly scheduled Daily Lesbian Moment blog:) See you again a few days into April where hopefully there will be even more to report. Shenanigans, I tell you. Pure shenanigans!- (Click here for Jan. 2012 blog entry)

Walking Alone

.Do you ever contemplate the sadness of walking life alone?  .Although you may have friends and family that can walk with you for a while, you realize that they have their own friends and family and you know it's not possible for them to walk with you the entire journey?. Even though you could make it alone, sharing the joyful moments of your journey with someone you really love is the happiness that a good life is made of.  .It reminds me of that scene in "Jerry Maguire" where he had his big night but he couldn't enjoy it because his wife wasn't with him.  He's telling her (in front of a room full of women) that he realizes that his happiness is now contingent upon having her presence to share it with.  . .(Wasn't that sweet?) .Not only do you suffer walking alone by having nobody to share your basic life joys with, but you also know that when you suffer a heart-break (and you WILL), there is nobody with you to comfort you.  .When you feel no hand rubbing your back and have no body to just be physically present, be certain that your sadness becomes multiplied.  .Walking alone is hard and with each passing year, I have greater tenderness in my heart for those who must do it.  It will never be my desire to walk alone but sometimes, it's not up to us.  For those who must do it who don't want to, my heart goes out to you. . Love and light.

Which Member of One Direction is Gay?

Which Member of One Direction is Gay? Are there any gay members of One Direction? Do any of them actually know themselves? Take a look at the history of boy bands with members coming out as gay.

Irish boy band Westlife star Mark Feehily declared he was gay and in a relationship with Kevin McDaid, who used to be in boyband V. Westlife memebrs fully supported Mark as did Westlife's fans.

Irish boy band Boyzone were the biggest boy band in Britain - six number ones, 10 million albums, sold-out arena tours with a not a dry seat in the house - and Stephen Gately was (secretly at first) gay. Sadly Stephen passed away last year from a congenital heart problem.

Lance Bass from US boy band N-Sync came out in 2006.  "I knew that I was in this popular band and I had four other guys' careers in my hand, and I knew that if I ever acted on it or even said (that I was gay), it would overpower everything," said Bass at the time, referring to bandmates Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick, JC Chasez and Justin Timberlake.

Jonathan Knight from US Boy Band New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) is reported by Perez Hilton as gay. Johnathan dated a Brazilian model (Kyle Wilker), until he spilled the beans on his boy band boyfriends.

UK boy band Take That have no out gay members. Robbie Williams has joked many times about being gay but has sued The Mirror for libelous reports about his sexuality.

McFly are very cool and very supportive of their gay fan base. The boys recently got their willies out on the stage of gay London club institution G.A.Y. The one on the left is particularly cute. He has an amazing body.

So which one of One Direction do you think is gay?

The one in purple?

The One Direction boys are working very hard on the X Factor to make it in the tough world of music. I'm sure they will do well winning or otherwise. They really don't need speculation on their sexuality, but they are sure going to get it.

JLS last year's X Factor definitely all look straight. It will be interesting to see if a boy band every has an out gay member from the get-go.

Comments  please guys!

Gaga speaks, Reid acts on ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Does Lady Gaga run the U.S. Senate?

A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday a vote to repeal the military’s ban of openly gay and lesbian soldiers had been planned for next week before the singer made waves with a plea during a daytime talk show.

The pop star known for flashy performances and eccentric style called on Reid to repeal the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres that aired Monday.

Reid’s campaign and Gaga traded talking points on Twitter after the lawmaker announced the vote. Reid told Gaga repealing the measure was the right thing to do.

Campaign spokesman Kelly Steele said Reid does not take cues from Gaga.

Comments from the Web

Kenny Kardashian says:

I, too, served in the Navy and also swore the same oath, not really knowing what lay ahead. While for most people, being gay is dangerous I was lucky to experience minimal discrimination and teasing. However, I was not immune from such teasing. Everyone at my shore duty facility at Naval Air Staton North Island in San Diego knew I was gay and while I made a risky move, when people asked, I told. However, there was no one running to the officer in charge. Most the people that asked me said they were “cool with it”, or others simply just knew.

I am not the most butch guy in the world, but my feminine mannerisms and the way I was did catch the attention of some few people in leadership chain of command around me. They woul…

Lorie Zapf follow up
Last Friday, our community got some good news from the San Diego Association of Realtors (SDAR) which decided to suspend its endorsement of Lorie Zapf for City Council. Zapf failed to disclose a number of crippling personal details including her open gay-hatred and her operation of a short sale scam with husband Eric. Zapf is now forced to remove the Realtor thumbs-up from all campaign material and won’t have access to the organization’s PAC funds. Thanks to all who took a moment to contact SDAR, both as Realtors and as clients. Your direct involvement helped immensely. Do you really *want* to know how you are bad in bed?

My ex girlfriend and I are back together again and things are better this time. Except for the sex. The reason we previously broke up is that my not wanting to be touched (PTSD, Child Abuse) was unfair to her. I was more than happy to do all the work in bed but she insisted that she actually wanted to touch me and it was bothering her that I didn't want her to. The problem is that now that I actually want to be touched in sex she isn't that good. And I'm not sure how to tell her that without hurting her. She has asked me over text and I told her it is a topic to have in person outside of bed and we made a date to do that this week.

While she has slept with a lot more women than I have she defaults to thinking that my body should work the same way hers does. That because we have the same parts that they like to be touched the same way. I've told her how I would like to be touched in bed. I've told her my fantasies. I've shown her how I like to touch myself.

She just doesn't get it. She tells me that she has a short attention span and that it is my job to remind her over and over again how I like it. Is this fair? It kind of makes me feel like crap that my lover can't be bothered to remember how I actually like it.

I'm afraid that she thinks that because in the past I didn't like to be touched that she never has to do anything that pleases me. Her not remembering how I like to be touched makes me feel that she actually doesn't find me attractive and is only with me because of what I can do to her in bed. I've asked her this and she's stated that it isn't the case and that it is just that she forgets and that I just need to train her how to touch me.

I am not sure if I am upset over nothing and that "training" her how I like it in bed is something that is my responsibility in bed. I'm not sure if I'm being fair to her in being irritated that she can't remember and that she laughs off her short attention span. I haven't had much experience in healthy sexual relationships.

To be fair: We communicate on all other issues wonderfully. I really do care about her and know that she cares about me. I have no problem lowering the amount of sex we have to her preference. We both are great at calling each other on our shit and taking it without resentment. We both are great at compromising and I feel really emotionally connected to her and she has stated the same to me. Our emotional and mental connection has never been the problem.

May be a reason as well: I have had to explain to her that vaginas aren't actually perfectly straight. That there is a G-spot in some women. That orgasms don't always look like what they are in movies (non-porn). That some women can orgasm from penetration and some can't. She is ex-Mormon. She has several learning disabilities surrounding education (Just throwing out all ideas no matter how ridiculous) but has been tested for ADHD and that proved to be moot.

Say It

Speak up…again and again…and again

I was on the bandstand in LA, just 48 hours before the big 2008 election, thrilled to be singing for yet another gay wedding

I was becoming aware of a strange, new sense of ease in the midst of this uber-straight group of guys, all of whom had, at one point or another, let me know they were unthreatened by the shocking fact that I had “changed teams”. (As if somehow I was now part of the opposition). I whirled around and, with big eyes for emphasis, reminded everyone, “It’s ‘No’ on Prop 8 this Tuesday.”

The Bass player looked up from his tuner, “No, it’s ‘Yes.’”

Now I added the big arms. “No, no, no – we’re voting &l…

Seeking Simone is a web series that follows Simone Selkin's bumbling attempts to date her way through Toronto, and the first episode of the second season recently premiered. Hello Faithful Friends

Hey, remember when Dipstick and I used to post stuff here? For those of you who haven't given up on us, THANK YOU!Have you ever felt caught up in a vortex, where things are spinning so fast around you that you actually see colors and bright shiny things in the clouds (no hallucinogenics involved)? That is how I've been feeling and it's been hard to hold onto the reigns. Beyond basking in glee and drinking packets of EmergenC, that also means any free time I've had has been dedicated to sleep, so sincere apologies for being MIA.Anyhoodle, for now, I'll fill you in on all things Lipstick since I last wrote.A little over a week ago, we shot our first short film Til Death To Us Toby. For Patty (who was an awesome Assistant Director) and I, it was a 22 hour day. We got up at 3:45am, crew call was at 5:45 and we were rolling by 6:30. We shot until 11:11pm non-stop, save 15 minutes for lunch and 15 minutes for dinner. I thought it was killer that I said "that's a wrap" at 11:11 (I'm superstitious that way). We partied with the cast + crew until nearly 1am. The cast and crew were beyond AMAZING! Seriously, what a stellar team we had, who never complained or ran out of energy. Can't wait for the big wrap party! If you're out of the loop, you can follow the thread the Hot Pink Shorts HERE.It's been an amazing journey with OUTtv and this Hot Pink Shorts program. I'm gushing with gratitude and spinning at the sight of exciting things on the horizon, finally truly within grasp. I told the folks at OUTtv that I felt like a caterpillar who'd transformed into butterfly throughout this process. Week One, I was a furry little larvae and slowly, as we ate all the mentors had to offer, and set out on our own journey into the sticks and leaves, my wings actually began to take shape and I could eventually lift off the ground. And now, well, there's no stopping me as I fly around this wonderful world of opportunity.More to come soon, for sure, as there are some really cool things simmering on the TV front.**Small caveat for you Portland peeps: in the upcoming month, we'll be filming a little music video for the original song Christine Havrilla and I are co-writing for Toby. It's called Hightail and it's addictive. Think Jack Black meets Melissa Etheridge. For the video, which will also be part of the credits for the film, we'll need people to come out and help us, so stay tuned. We'll need as many people as we can get for the shoot, which is slated to happen at Laurelhurst Park.Enjoy the little slideshow below of our shoot, both of the action and behind the scenes. Coming Out to Your Children

Dear Lesbian Life:
I have been in my lesbian relationship for going on 3 years.  My son is almost 9 and my daughter is 7 1/2.  They love my girlfriend.  They know we love each other but we have not told them any detail.  We have been very gradual with how much time we all spend together over the years.  Lately, we have been feeling as though we would like to progress our relationship and within the next year or so, move in together.  She has been spending more time with us and we have been doing sleepovers.  My kids are always asking when will she move in with us to which my response has always been "these things take time :)".

My ex has been fairly supportive of our relationship and knows that we need to sit down and have a discussion with our kids about my life, so that we can progress.  I am wondering if you have any information that you could share with me about coming out to my children? ...Read Full Post

Happy New Year's and Marry New Queers

My peops! I have had a little tradition of writing to you on New Year's Eve for the last few years and I wanted to keep it going today. As I write this, I'm in my new home in Houston after having lived in Los Angeles for the last 4 years and San Diego 3 years before that. It's also the first day of my new exciting gig--one that I hope will be the first of MANY like this--and a few hours away from being able to hang out with my mom again like I've been able to do the last few weeks.2011 started off SO poorly for me, and then got worse...and worse still. There were definitely some lovely little highlights and I won't complain since I'm still here to talk about it! But what I'm trying to say is that...it got better! :) This, after all, is the year of IT GETS BETTER. We've heard it all year. I've said it to myself and to you guys all year. And now, today, I can say that its happening right before my eyes. I know that a lot of you reading this right now are not feeling well, or are down about something, or may even be downright depressed. I've heard from you all year...and I know there are several others I haven't heard from but are feeling this way. I want you to know that I am here, all of my readers are here, and we're not going anywhere. I need you to stay with us. We lost too many beautiful people to suicide this year (and years past). It's an epidemic. And if I can help stop it from happening (oh man...this is going to sound trite, but I mean it with all of my heart!) to just ONE PERSON, then that would be the proudest moment of my life. It doesn't matter if I ever find out about it or not...if somehow something I can say to you or do or not say or not do will help just one person not go down that path this year, then that makes me the happiest/luckiest girl on earth. And for those of you who are NOT struggling that deeply...who are having a great time in life and who plan to make 2012 YOUR year, I can not WAIT to see it all unfold! Please keep me updated and let me know how awesome things are going for you. Even if you and I have never met before, you mean more to me than I could possibly explain in 365 posts...and I wish wonderful things for you. I'm not big on New Year's resolutions, but I will say I have a new life's resolution to touch and positively affect as many lives as I can. It may just be by making someone smile with a video of a couple of outta control rouge boobs, or as life-altering as helping you find the love of your life, or some bit of advice or helping you connect with the person who can help you with something...or ya know, just that boob thing. But whatever it is, I hope to leave the world a better place than I found it, one day at a time, one person at a time. And...since it looks like I could probably break into 'We Are the World' at ANY moment now, I'm just gonna throw it over to my tried and true:I also wanted to take a moment to speak to anyone who is struggling with their identity. Not going to make this long, cause life is short. ...and that's my point: life is short. We're only here for a short time, and you've got to LIVE. I think my new wife Jessie J says it best:And I'll leave you with this. Let's support this film this year!! It's long overdue:Thank you for 5.5 years...here's to MORE!-Arlan

I'm 45, female and just discovered I'm bi. Now what?

I'm 45, female and just discovered I'm bi. Now what?

Yes, I know it seems unlikely, and the nearest I can figure is my arousal/desire for every single one of my lovers has occurred after being desired, rather than finding someone hot in advance. I was married for a very long time, and possibly oblivious to any gay come-ons, in my premarital time. For the sake of the information I seek, can we please assume that I am correct - that I am bi, and that this wasn't just experimental? (which has been suggested to me by a straight friend). I had very satisfying sex with a close friend a week ago after she flirted relentlessly with me for 6 weeks (yes, I'm clueless). I find I want more, and not just/necessarily with her. There were aspects of it very different to sex with a man (which I also enjoy immensely) which were just delightful, not least the emotional closeness, the softer kisses, the different body to hold in my arms, the feel of ... yeah, you get the idea.

So I don't know where to start, and feel like a near virgin again, but old enough this time to realise there's so many complications.

Here's some:
I'm concerned about coming out at some stage to my adult but somewhat innocent children, who still don't cope well with me having sex with someone other than their father, particular as their father and I didn't share a bedroom for most of our marriage.

I'm wondering if I should come out to my siblings - or is my sex-life none of their business, until I turn up at a barbecue with a female companion? They're not homophobic, but I think it will be a shock to them, simply because I've never identified that way.

I've heard that some lesbian women find bi-women problematic.
I don't know how to present my lack of experience at this age to potential female lovers. I don't know how to indicate my interest in a woman, in a way that is different to overtures of friendship. I really don't know know what to do in bed. I'm not sure lesbian porn is the way to go, if I could find it, because like, I wouldn't recommend porn to anyone to learn about sex.

I wonder if I should tell my friends, and long-term colleagues and I do work in a very gay-friendly workplace, but is my sexuality an inappropriate topic at work?

I'm a student and could join the uni queer support group, but the members are likely to be much younger than me, and with very different issues.

I'm confused that it took me this long to find out. I feel somewhat guilty that I didn't have to go through discrimination in my youth because I didn't know.

I'm kind of horrified that I'm so clueless about myself that I didn't know. I feel my self-identity has just been turned upside, and I'm not sure who I am anymore, and it feels awfully late to go looking for myself.

I wonder if I should go to gay clubs.

The very few straight friends that I've shared with seem to think it's no big deal, the males saying most women are bi, and whatever, the females telling me I'm still the same person I was before and they love me, which is nice and accepting of both sets, but not very helpful if you know what I mean.

I don't know where to start. I don't know what I don't know. I wonder if I'm making too big a deal of this.

Bonus question: my arousal/desire for every single one of my lovers has occurred after being desired - this probably explains why I have such difficulty masturbating to orgasm without company (and I do have a very good imagination, also can come very easily with a partner), but also makes me further question my sexuality - why is it so much tied into external influences. What's up with that?

One Direction Gay Ad for Nintendo

Those One Direction guys are so metro-sexual with their tactile hugging and playfulness. They are toally surrounded by those One Direction Gay rumours. Irrespective of that, just like JLS they have an advertising deal with Nintendo! The only trouble with this is, they haven't released any music yet. The same thing happened with JEdward - thankGod they didn't release any music.

Getting an ad deal with Nintendo is really basically because they are famous for being an X-Factor contestant and of course for being cute, popular..... They are also at the top of their career (to date) and may have signed up for peanuts. JEdward allegedly earned 3 in their first year from PAs and advertising deals.

Anyway they are definitely getting cuter since they appeared on the X-factor?

Do you think One Direction deserve an ad deal with Nintendo?

Ten things to know about GLSEN's 2013 report on school climate

Today, the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) published their 8th biennial report on LGBT youth experiences in schools, the 2013 National School Climate Survey. Since 1999, this survey of over 7,000 students from all 50 states and Washington D.C. has consistently indicated that the availability of LGBT school-based resources and support directly impacts the safety of school climate. While a lot of progress has been made in the past fifteen years?verbal and physical harassment based on sexual orientation and gender expression were lower than in all prior years of the NSCS?there is a long way to go in making our schools safe spaces and positive learning environments for marginalized youth.
Check out some of the facts below to learn about how LGBT middle and high school students experience hearing biased language, harassment and assault, anti-LGBT discrimination at school, and the impact of supportive resources.
1)Language: 65% of LGBT students heard anti-LGBT remarks frequently or often?33% pertained specifically to transgender people. Specifically, 71.4% heard "gay" used in a negative way frequently or often, with 90.8% reporting they felt distressed because of this language.
2)Harassment: 36% of LGBT students were physically harassed (e.g., pushed or shoved) in the past year because of their sexual orientation and 23% because of their gender expression
3)Assault: 17% were physically assaulted (e.g., punched, kicked, injured with a weapon) in the past year because of their sexual orientation and 11% because of their gender expression.

4)Discriminatory policies: 56% of LGBT students reported personally experiencing LGBT-related discriminatory policies or practices at school, while 65% said other students at their school experienced such policies. 28% of those reporting cited being disciplined for public displays of affection that were not disciplined among non-LGBT students.
5) Staff support: LGBT students with 11 or more supportive staff at their school were less likely to feel unsafe than those with no supportive staff and had higher GPAs (3.3 vs. 2.8). Problematically, only 39% of students could identify 11 or more supportive staff.
6) Gender-segregated spaces: Over a third of those surveyed avoided gender-segregated spaces in school because they felt unsafe or uncomfortable (bathrooms: 35.4%, locker rooms: 45.3%).
7)Transgender students: 42.2% of transgender students had been prevented from using their preferred name (10.8% of LGBT students overall) while 31.6% were prevented from wearing clothes considered inappropriate based on their legal sex.
8)Absences: LGBT students who experienced higher levels of victimization because of their sexual orientation or gender expression were more than 3 times more likely to have missed school in the past month than those who experienced lower levels (61.1% vs 17.3% for sexual orientation, 58.6% vs 18.2% for gender expression).
9)Gay-straight alliances: Only half (50.3%) of students said that their school had a GSA or similar student club. Compared to LGBT students who did not have a GSA in their school, students who had access to one were less likely to hear anti-LGBT slurs often or frequently (57.4% vs 71.6%).
10)Inclusive curriculum: Only 18.5% of LGBT students were taught positive representations about LGBT people, history, or events in their schools; 14.8% had been taught negative content about LGBT topics. Those with LGBT-inclusive curriculum were more likely to report that their classmates were somewhat or very accepting of LGBT people (75.2% vs 39.6%), and felt more connected to their school community.

Positive changes in indicators of hostile school climates emerged in the most recent report. For example, although the expression "that's so gay" remains the most common form of anti-LGBT language heard by LGBT students, its prevalence has declined consistently since 2001. Also, students experienced lower verbal and physical harassment based on sexual orientation than in all prior years, and higher numbers of GSAs, supportive educators, anti-bullying policies, and LGBT-related resources in schools.
For more information on school climate?including demographic and school characteristics comparisons, research methods and samples, trends over time, and a discussion of the data? read the full report here. Whether we work in or with schools ourselves, we are all responsible for making the space where our youth spend most of their time safe, inclusive spaces of growth and community.

UK finds that only 1.5% of population is GLB

The United Kingdom’s Office for National Statistics has produced data suggesting that only 1.5 percent of UK adults are gay, lesbian or bisexual.

As part of a yearly data collection effort, ONS questioned 247,623 people about their sexual identity. In the case of face-to-face interviews, respondents were shown a card that said “heterosexual/straight, gay/lesbian, bisexual, other” and told to read out a number beside the word that “best describes how you think of yourself.” In telephone interviews, respondents were read the four categories and told to “please say ‘yes’ when you hear the option that best describes how you think of yourself.”

Letters to the Editor

Letter to the editor:

Last night I attended the Hillcrest Town Council to listen to Todd Gloria, Carl DeMaio, debate Prop D. This was supposed to be an informational forum. Carl DeMaio, it appears, does not understand the word “decorum” as he continuously and viciously attached Todd Gloria, along unions and with the labor movement in general. DeMaio came across as a nasty bully. Probably a carry over from his childhood. Mr. DeMaio was a guest in Todd Gloria’s district but proceeded in his usually manner - that of an attach dog DeMaio periodally rolled his eyes or made faces behind Councilman Gloria’s back while the councilman spoke on the subject. DeMaio was plan rude and owes Councilman an apology.

My housemates and I interviewed several people yesterday for a new roommate. We chose the person whose move-in schedule logistically worked best. However, we got along with all of the interviewees surprisingly well; each one stayed and chatted for at least an hour.

I especially got along with two people, and I'd like to contact them again to see if they want to get together as friends, or - especially one of them - as a date. How inappropriate is this? Would you feel flattered or stalked if someone who didn't choose you as a roommate asked you out? Probably relevant details: I am a queer/lesbian woman. This is in San Francisco. The one person I want to "get to know" more as a friend is also a queer woman. The person I really want to ask on a date is a trans* guy. Both mentioned during the interviews that they are single.

Come Be a Part of Til Death Do Us Toby!

Portland! We are coming to town this week to film a portion of the short film Til Death Do Us Toby and want YOU to be a part of it.DETAILSSaturday, June 26, 20105 - 6pmLaurelhurst Park**meet at the bathroom area (click on map embedded here) We will be filming Christine Havrilla singing a song called Hightail, co-written by Gina Daggett and Patricia McKenny. With her jammin' acoustic guitar, we are going to film Havrilla in front of all of you, who will sing along with the chorus, which is super duper catchy...Gotta break freeGotta surviveGotta find a way to stay aliveI just wanna runI just wanna screamI just wanna hightail out of this dream What is this Til Death Do Us Toby movie anyway? It's a short film about a girl named Sam and a neurotic dog named Toby, who are both trying to find freedom. In Sam's case, she's trying to break free from her controlling mother, Mimi, who doesn't like Sam's best friend who's quite the edgy dyke. In Toby's case, he misunderstands a conversation between Mimi and Sam and thinks they're out to kill him, so he's just trying to hightail out of electric chair (aka their house). >>>>>>>>>>>>>> It's going to be a ton of fun and won't take up a bunch of time, so come on out and be in the short film, which will be making the queer festival rounds next year. Lipstick would be forever grateful! If you're coming, let us know on FACEBOOK!

I know they're nice, but they're not for me!

I'm in an amazing relationship, with someone I've known for over two years, and we've been dating for a year-ish. We're both women in our early 20's. I've only dated women up to this point, and been very happy with that. It seems that my brain doesn't want to keep that status quo anymore and is trying to convince me I want to experience being with men. I don't want to be with men. I don't like men as well as women, I prefer women sexually, and I love my girlfriend an extreme amount. We're very happy and healthy. I like the idea of being with men, and I had a good experience with the one guy I've seen (see next paragraph). I just know I'm happiest with her, and the few benefits of dating guys wouldn't make up for how much I care about her and how happy she makes me.

This doesn't bother me often. But the last time I had these urges, I ended up breaking it off with her abruptly, seeing the guy for a few weeks, and then ending that because it wasn't what I wanted. She took me back. I will not do that again. I don't want to break up ever, but I definitely won't break up with her for a stupid fling.

How do I ignore these feelings? I don't care that I'm sexually attracted to both genders. Not a big deal. The problem is that I start to think about men too much in what-if hypotheticals, and that makes me anxious. That anxiety makes me question the relationship in ways I wouldn't if I were thinking clearly. And then that leads to me distancing myself from my girlfriend. And then it snowballs.

I know I need to talk to someone about this, but I don't want to bring it up with her because of last time. I just need tips on how to rationalize this to myself and convince myself that this is not the end of the world that my brain wants me to think it is. And I do not want to break up with her.

Thanks for the Siesta, Bitchachos!

Phew - that was a much needed siesta, Bitchachos!I had a wonderful learning experience in my Publishing for New Media class (remember, I was getting graded to blog?)  I learned all about SEO keywords and analytics.  It was fun (and creepy) to see where my visitors were coming from, how long they were staying and what they were looking at.  I got to make a cool spreadsheet breaking it all down into the most minute components, such as IP addresses and networks that visitors were logged into.  (Some of you log in from work - your bosses would not approve!) Still, you fine bitches got me an A in my class and my readership went up exponentially.  Although I wanted to take the summer off from blogging so I could finish my last few classes and write my thesis (and work on campus), my science class/lab is much easier than I expected and the thesis is humming along.  Since I have more time than I anticipiated and you all did so well for me with your visits, I didn't want to make you wait until August to hear from me again.  So tomorrow morning, you get a brand new post and it's going to be good so get your big girl panties on and be ready to read.-Shannon

Anti-Violence Project releases report on LGBT domestic violence

The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs has released their 2013 comprehensive report on intimate partner violence (IPV) in LGBTQ and HIV-affected communities right on time for domestic violence awareness month. For the second year in a row this report shows the highest homicide rate ever recorded. NCAVP documented 21 IPV homicides in 2013, the highest recorded level, equal to the 21 homicides in 2012. This is up from 19 IPV homicides in 2011 and more than three times the 6 documented homicides in 2010.
In 2013, 76% of all reported IPV homicide victims were gay men, which is up significantly from 48% in 2012. ?The truly alarming number of gay men killed due to intimate partner violence indicates a need to expand the national discourse around intimate partner violence, to ensure that it includes gay men, bisexual people, transgender, and gender non-conforming people. This is a crisis that affects everyone," said Justin Shaw, Executive Director of the Kansas City Anti-Violence Project.

According to the report 61% of bisexual women reported being raped or physically assaulted or stalked by a partner as well as 37% of bisexual men, populations that are often left out of conversations about the LGBT community. Transgender people are four times more likely to face discrimination due to IPV and young people ages 19-29 made up the majority of intimate partner violence survivors. This report demostrates the need for the LGBTQ community to also be a part of the discourse about domestic violence prevention and awareness.
For more information on Domestic Violence Awareness Month visit The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The organization, Not Aloneoffers a comprehensive list of resources for survivors of intimate partner violence that includes specific resources for the LGBTQ community and Forge, a progressive transgender rights organization, has a new report on best strategies for making shelters inclusive of transgender women who facing IPV.

Vancouver Queers :: Will You Be at Davie + Howe?

Vancouver is a-talking about what's coming to Davie & Howe in October and it's all the buzz.... Much speculation has been going around about what would be going into the prime intersection in gay-town. While I was glad to hear it's not going to be a Starbuck's or a BlockBuster or yet another Safeway, I couldn't get the skinny on what was coming to the location exactly. I'm super intrigued, though, as I like the way "whatever-it-is" is flirting with the gay community. What I Did Find OutIt's going to be a new Canadian brand and that they are launching in Vancouver before going national. Hmm.... a brand of what? We also heard from a very reliable source that this new yet to be named Canadian brand is going to definitely support the LGBT community. Even though it's quite coy, I'm very curious--curious enough to join the online bandwagon! You should, too.I'll keep my ear to the ground and let you know what I can uncover between now and Oct. I'm excited to see so many cute faces out and about and online! Join me in the fun.
