News: Tulum, Tiwonge Chimbalanga, Michigan, Vinny Guadganino

L.A. Times: Obama needs to support marriage equality.
Suspect arrested in double murder of gay couple in Wilton Manors, Florida.

Gay resort opening in Tulum, Mexico: "The hotel is uniquely for men. That is to say, only homosexual couples are accepted, it's not for women, although among our personnel we have heterosexual men and women and all have received specialized training to avoid having our guests feel uncomfortable or discriminated against."
Man hit by SUV while playing a real-life game of 'Frogger'.
Concerns for trans woman imprisoned for Malawi gay wedding: "Tiwonge Chimbalanga, one half of the couple arrested and imprisoned in Malawi on homosexuality charges, has been attacked and has been waiting three months to receive a visa so she can get asylum in Canada."
No Daniel Craig shots for Obama this year: "The White House gave the press pool traveling with the president strict instructions that there would be no long lenses or other sneaky attempts to take pictures of a shirtless leader of the free world...The subject of images of Mr. Obama sans shirt has been a touchy one during his presidency. In 2008, when he was president-elect, some pictures emerged from him body-surfing in Hawaii, and he seemed a little sheepish when they were splashed all over the tabloids and magazines."
Jersey Shore's Vinny to release T-shirt line, with a portion of proceeds to go toward anti-bullying initiatives.
Forthcoming Tron animated series to be voiced by a Hobbit.
Oprah announces finalists for OWN talk show host competition: "The would-be hosts include a travel guide who's in a wheelchair, a comedian who thinks the U.S. needs a gay best friend, and a businesswoman aiming to make a show about money both informative and fun...Ryan O'Connor, of West Hollywood, Calif., who says he wants to be the country's gay best friend. 'If a variety show and a traditional talk show had a baby, that'd be my show,' he said."
Matthew Morrison and Penn Badgley having holiday bromance in Punta Cana.
Inspiration for Rosie the Riveter poster dies.
Rosie O'Donnell gets her own comic book.
Equality Michigan takes on Target: ?If corporations are not willing to consider the implications of the availability of housing, health care, jobs, and parental and spousal rights on the success of their communities, they should refrain from using their profits to weigh in on our selection of political leadership. When corporations do choose to take active roles in political races, they should be prepared to have consumers interpret their support as an indication of their corporate values.?
Man jumps fence, scares Harry Smith on CBS Early Show.
Michelle Williams says she'll watch Brokeback Mountain with her daughter: "I was just an actor who happened to be lucky enough to be in the right place, and it was the place where I met Matilda's father, and that is a lot. It was a lot. And it will be a lot for Matilda too, when she gets around to watching it. I will watch it with her, when she's ready. It is hard to imagine what that would feel like, but one day, yes, we will watch it together."

What do you give the girl who has everything?

I have just been seduced by a relatively older, more experienced, kinky woman who's keen to show me the darker side of pleasure. I'm a relatively inexperienced younger woman. What could I do so that *she* gets some fun out of it too? I'm in my mid 20s and while I've known I was queer for ages I've never had any significant sexual experiences with women. I've kissed them but that's about it really. The past couple of years have been groundbreaking in terms of exploring my sexuality; I've been more open and outgoing, finding out what I like and what seems intriguing.

Recently I was chatting with a woman I met online who seemed to have similar creative and artistic inclinations. I thought I may be too young for her (she's in her mid 30s and was after people from late 20s to her age - I was on the young side) but I figured we could make good creative friends so I got in touch. The conversation was fun and friendly and we hit it off well.

One time I made a comment about BDSM, which was her cue to volunteer to give me a fun positive sexual experience (this was my first inclination that she was interested in me) and asked me what I was into. In total surprise I tell her that I'm not actually sure what I like, having only slept with one person ever, but I'm open and intrigued and have ideas. This then leads to a couple of days of erotic kinky conversation, with her and I talking about what we could possibly do and our interests and pasts and all that.

We've met up twice so far - once for an introductory lunch date (which just strengthened the attraction!) and one for a lazy picnic lunch with hours of luscious making out (she's a great kisser!!). We're still keen on each other and have made plans for future encounters, with more conversations about what she could do to me and her bag of tricks and how creative we can be with each other.

I'm highly surprised that she's keen on playing with me, given my inexperience - however, she's said that she finds the prospect of giving someone her first woman/woman experience very exciting. She is pretty upfront and matter-of-fact about what turns her on and loves any ideas I can give her. I've so far told her that I am her canvas, which excites her. She says she likes my sensuality, finds me gorgeous, and is keen to explore me as a lover.

However, while I am really enjoying the attention and can't wait to see her again, I feel like I don't really have much to contribute to this partnership. What do I know about girl sex besides what I hear from other queer women and from my fantasies? What could I possibly offer a woman who has her own bag of toys and tricks? She's going through all this effort to turn me on (all she really has to do is kiss me and I'm a goner, but I'm happy for more!) but what could *I* do for *her*?

It's clear that pleasuring me and seeing what works is a huge pleasure for her, but I don't want her to be doing all of the work and feel like she's getting nothing in return. I want to turn *her* on, give *her* pleasure...I just don't really know *how*. The most I've been able to do so far is tempt her with erotic writing, which I'm fairly good at (well it's working for her at least) but I feel like she's going to laugh at me for, say, being rubbish at going down on her or something, I don't know!

Am I overthinking it? Is it OK to just let go and let her please me & seduce me however she wants? What can I do to appease the inner need to repay the favour? What I lack in experience I more than make up for in enthusiasm and ingenuity - but how do I give her a good time?

Re: Speaking of sex drive!!

southtownrecords wrote:Hi everyone i am new here and am mtf i just have a quick question. I am married to a great woman who loves to have sex, which is completely fine by me. So, my question is will I ever get my sex drive back??The previous reply that refers to frame of mind, fantasizing and being considerate of your wife's needs has some elements of truth to it, but since it was hormones that dampened your sex drive in the first place, I think your question was more along the lines of endocrinology. Having a "giving" frame of mind but having hormones that have been altered from their native state is like trying to start a fire with a good match and dry kindling, but waterlogged firewood. At the extreme, if your wife's needs include someone who is the gentle aggressor who finds her irresistible, then your best efforts may amount to no more than a grab for an Academy Award nomination; if you are good at it, your wife may be satisfied, but you may feel crappy for your internal dishonesty.I am no endocrinologist, but having grown B-cup boobs and brought them to lactation, (and because I am in a long-term marriage to a woman, I yo-yoed on and off testosterone) without a doctor's guidance, I have jerked my body chemistry around enough to become very aware of how much of our moods and interests are mediated by hormones and other body chemistry. At one point, when my testosterone was suppressed by blockers and I was using both estrogen and progesterone in varying amounts, I felt as though I experienced the "female version" of arousal. It did make it easier to entertain sexual thoughts and fantasies. It makes sense that this might be possible because the difference between teen-age girls and menopausal women is likely largely hormone-related and the intense horny-ness experienced by some women near ovulation, too.One major complicating factor for experimenting with hormones for their mood-effecting qualities is that thee is something like a 3-day lag time, and there are rebound effects and compensation effects as your body tries to maintain some sort of steady course while you keep jerking it around. In case you are lactating or considering it, I'm not aware of any way around the fact that elevated prolactin levels are death to sexual desire. And lastly, if you come off of "HRT", my case agrees with the other poster who said that you may not return to pre-"HRT" levels. My case finally came down to: how much benefit am I getting from the feel-good brain chemicals as I feed my obsession to transform my body, VERSUS how much do I care about the happiness and well-being of my wife and my relationship with her. It will be a different answer for each couple/ person. In my case I have let go of the idea of pursuing more transformation, but am glad for having grown boobs.

The President With Two Faces

The Advocate
reports:
When it comes to same-sex marriage, President Barack
Obama acknowledged Wednesday that "attitudes evolve, including
mine" during an interview with five progressive bloggers....

On the question of marriage, President
Obama began by clarifying that he wasn't going to "make big news"
at that particular moment. But his answer gave the first indication
that he might be rethinking what has so far been his unremitting
support for civil unions ever since adopting that stance during his
2004 U.S. Senate bid.

"I have been to this point unwilling to sign on to same-sex
marriage primarily because of my understandings of the traditional
definitions of marriage," he said. "But I also think you're right
that attitudes evolve, including mine. And I think that it is an
issue that I wrestle with and think about because I have a whole
host of friends who are in gay partnerships. I have staff members
who are in committed, monogamous relationships, who are raising
children, who are wonderful parents. And I care about them deeply.
And so while I'm not prepared to reverse myself here, sitting in
the Roosevelt Room at 3:30 in the afternoon, I think it's fair to
say that it's something that I think a lot about. That's probably
the best you'll do out of me today."
Adam Serwer
unpacks that:
If Obama began to openly support marriage equality,
that wouldn't just be an "evolution" of his views, it would be a
return to where they once were. After all, in 1996, while running
for the Illinois State Senate, he said he
supported marriage equality. In response to a newspaper
questionnaire, he wrote, "I favor legalizing same-sex marriages,
and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages."

As we all know, the Illinois State Senate
candidate who once supported marriage equality ultimately ran for
president in a country in which a majority of citizens did not
support same-sex marriage, and his administration has defended in
court laws that do just that. Polls are now
beginning to show a majority of Americans favoring marriage
equality, and you can sense a palpable relief in the president's
statement that someday soon, he'll be able to stop pretending that
his religious beliefs demand that he oppose equal rights for gay
and lesbian couples.
The underlying lesson here -- aside from "Don't trust Barack
Obama" -- is the exaggerated importance people put on the
presidency. Activists love to project secret agendas onto their
favorite politicians. In this case, Obama almost certainly
does support gay marriage in his heart, but that hasn't
done a thing to advance the cause; it may even have retarded it
slightly, to the extent that his gay admirers are less likely to
hold his feet to the fire. Progress is coming from changing views
at the grassroots, and the fellow who theoretically leads the
country is, at best, waiting for public opinion to lead
him.

Amar en Tiempos Revueltos - season 5, recap 10

Like I said in the previous recap, we will be entering the dark ages for a while. Ana and Teresa got in a huge fight at José Maria’s funeral over the fact that they’ve both changed and things are definitely not going to be good for quite a while.

I promise you that it’ll get better, we just have to sit through some pretty silly, idiotic and downright stupid things before we get there. I promise you though that this buildup of tensions and emotions will definitely be worth the wait once it all boils over. So let’s get this show on the road, shall we?

After the blowup at José Maria’s funeral and Ana walking away from her, Teresa has been contemplating what has been going on with Héctor. But Héctor has some news of his own; because of what’s going on with the abuse case, he is being transferred to Africa. Yes, you heard that right; Africa. Dude is being sent off to Africa because he is meddling in something that they don’t want him meddling in.

Teresa, of course, is shocked and saddened.

He tells her that they will have to leave everything behind, but somehow I don’t see Teresa packing a bag and running off in a hurry. Teresa just says ‘yes’ a couple of times and Héctor makes it clear that if he doesn’t take the transfer, he will have to resign, which means he’ll be out of a job and there won’t be an income for them to live on.

Ana, unaware of what is going on with Teresa and her husband, is talking to Rosa on the streets. It seems that Teresa told Rosa that she wasn’t in office today and she felt that Teresa was just giving her excuses and she assumed that Ana gave her the order to tell Rosa to stay out of her office. Ana tells her that this wasn’t the case and that she’s sorry if Rosa got that impression, but that a friend is always welcome. Rosa tells her that she felt left behind and that she wasn’t sure if Ana would still be her friend. Ana tells her that this is not the case and that she usually doesn’t leave her friends behind. She tells Rosa to instead call her next time, to avoid these types of situations.

I’ve got a feeling Teresa is going to be getting a lot of slack for that later on.

Teresa is talking to Manolita about how things are changing lately, but that this is just the case sometimes, whether they like it or not and that Ana is simply thinking about other things… and people.

Yes, other people. Teresa’s part of it all is that she’s insanely jealous. But hey, she’s in love, even if she doesn’t realize it herself yet.

There’s a scene in-between with Rosa and a friend about a theatre contract not being renewed. I’m sure it’ll make sense soon, but I’ll just skip over it now.
<!--pagebreak-->

Ana and Teresa are having a mild disagreement over something that should have been done in months, or something. It doesn’t really matter, what matters is that the two of them clearly still care for each other, but they are trying to outwit each other over it. Eventually they get to the point: Rosa. Ana asks Teresa how she dares to screen her visits from people. Teresa rebuffs that she’s done it all the time (before they broke up, I mean before they had their falling out) and since Ana told her she was busy, she didn’t think anything of it.

Ana tells her coldly that she’ll manage her own time and that Teresa shouldn’t lie about her and that this is the last time that she’ll do it. She then orders Teresa to do that thing in months and walks away.

Teresa is not a happy camper.

We switch to Rosa and her friend at a brothel – Rosa is horrified but her friend doesn’t think anything of it, times are difficult after all.

I know these scenes will make sense eventually so I’m putting them in just in case, even though I absolutely dislike Rosa.

Back at Casa Rivas, Alfonso tells Ana that Héctor is being transferred to Tetouan (which is in Morocco, which is in North Africa. Yes, I did have to look that up) and Ana is absolutely horrified at the thought of Teresa (and Héctor) moving away.

<!--pagebreak-->

She goes on a rant about how Teresa might have known earlier when they were talking and feels guilty about talking to her friend like that and not knowing what was going on. She immediately calls up Teresa, mumbling to herself about being so blind and not realizing Teresa was in trouble, while waiting for Teresa to pick up the phone. No one picks up the phone and Ana gets even more panicky.

The next day at work, Teresa breaks the news to Ana about leaving the Stores. Ana asks her why and stupidly wonders if it is because she’s not paying Teresa enough while she full well knows that it is because of the transfer. It completely irks Teresa, as it should, and she starts making it very clear to Ana that she’s not the kind of person who cares about financial matters. She calms down a little when Ana asks her if it is a personal reason and if she will tell Ana about it. Teresa (lying through her teeth) tells her it is not important, but that she is leaving Madrid as well. She tells it is because of ‘work issues’ with Héctor, but doesn’t explain any further. Ana asks her that if maybe somebody did something Héctor could stay, but Teresa quickly tells her that there is nothing they want from anyone.

Ana resigns herself to what is going to happen and tells Teresa everything will be sorted for Teresa to say goodbye and then Teresa leaves, giving us a heartbreaking scene.

Remember that perfume bottle Teresa is holding? Yes, that’s the same one she got from Ana in the beginning. She still has it and, like any other person in love, smells it when she’s feeling sad so she can remember back to when everything was still alright.

Teresa is still in the locker room, upset, when Alfonso gets in and comforts his sister. She admits that she should have just told Ana about the transfer and everything else that is happening, but she just couldn’t. She tells him that the same thing that happened to their father is happening to them; pride, and she bursts into tears as Alfonso embraces her in a comforting hug. She tells him she just can’t seem to get a grip to what is happening between them (Ana and Teresa).

After that emotional scene we jump forward in time to June 1952. The girls are still not talking to each other and it’s very much hurting Ana. She picks up the phone a couple of times, but she just can’t seem to bring herself to actually dial the number.

Right after she puts the phone down for probably the millionth time, Alfonso has a go at her for not being there for her friend, especially since she’s pregnant and very much a fragile young woman. Ana tells him off for speaking to her like that – she herself doesn’t even know why they’re not speaking anymore, but she wasn’t the one that hurt her. Alfonso just tells the butler to prepare the guest bed, he’ll be sleeping there from now on.

I don’t know whatever the heck happened to moving to Africa, but Teresa is still working at the Stores and Ana is trying to chat her up to see how she’s doing. Teresa, however, isn’t exactly taking the bait and just continues working.

I can’t quite figure out the look on her face, I think it’s a cross between being hurt and a bit offended.

<!--pagebreak-->

At the brothel, where Rosa’s been working for a while now, Rosa gets a marriage proposal from one of her clients. I am still not sure where it’s going, but I’m sure it’ll all come together in the end.

We finally see what the heck happened to Africa because Héctor just told his boss to shove the transfer up his ass. Albeit a bit politer; he tells him that he doesn’t want to belong to the PD anymore.

Ana later shows up a Teresa’s house – she came to talk to her about what happened earlier. Ana wanted to talk, but Teresa wasn’t willing. Teresa tells her that they’ve never had much to tell each other. Teresa completely goes off on Ana saying that nothing is the same for them anymore, not for her, Ana, nor Alfonso and Héctor. Everything has changed and not for the good either.

Ana asks her when she’s ever hurt her and Teresa goes off on another tangent about Ana’s rich girl status. Ana, naturally, takes offence; she thought they had settled that part a while back. Teresa, however, says that she just cannot trust Ana and that Ana doesn’t even worry about her friends.

She tells Ana that she’s selfish and was a fool to think they’d ever be proper friends.

Ana, obviously hurt by Teresa’s words, fights back the tears while she lashes out a few words herself. She tells Teresa she was a fool thinking she’d be able to talk things through and sort everything out. How she was devastated about the way Teresa gave her the cold shoulder earlier at work and that she very much swallowed her pride to come and visit Teresa. Teresa tells her that on the next occasion Ana should just call.

Ana tells her there won’t be a next occasion and walks out the door, leaving us with a heartbroken Teresa.

Next week:
It’s been four months since their falling out, but Ana and Teresa are still not on speaking terms. Alfonso’s got some functioning problems and Ana starts hallucinating. Read previous recaps here.

Monday Watercooler: DADT repeal news

DADT reaction. With DADT repeal [1]now passed by the Senate, the bill awaits President Obama's signature. Once that happens the president must sign a letter, with the secretary of Defense and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff [2], must sign a document that certifies the changes will not negatively impact military readiness. This letter is then sent to the Congress, and 60 days later DADT is done. "Even with this historic vote, service members must continue to serve in silence until repeal is final," said Aubrey Sarvis [3], executive director for Servicemembers Legal Defense Network.

[4]

Gates and Mullen recognize the law has changed, but remind the old rules still apply. Here is what Secretary Robert Gates [5]said in his statement about the Senate vote. ?It is therefore important that our men and women in uniform understand that while today?s historic vote means that this policy will change, the implementation and certification process will take an additional period of time. In the meantime, the current law and policy will remain in effect." Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen [6]promises that whatever follows, change will follow military time. "I am pleased to see the Congress vote to repeal the law governing ?Don't Ask, Don't Tell.? Handling this through legislation preserves the military's prerogative to implement change in a responsible, deliberate manner."

[7]

Joe'svictory. When the bill gets Obama's signature, Sen. Joe Lieberman [8] will be front and center. And he should. He carried this legislation through to passage. Despite being Sen. John McCain's attack dog in the 2008 election, it was a smart move on the White House to make the Nutmeg State senator the point person on this. ?Repealing ?Don't Ask, Don't Tell? is the right thing to do whether you're liberal, conservative, Democrat, Republican, or independent," the senator said in a statement. "It is the right thing to do for our military and the right thing to do for our country. The sixty-five Senators who voted to correct this injustice showed that we?re still able to come together in a bipartisan way to fight for America?s best interests.? And let's not forget Maine's junior senator Susan Collins, [9] who bucked her Republican leaders by being a co-sponsor to the DADT stand alone bill. ?I view this as a matter of fairness and justice, but also as a matter that we should want to have talents of anyone who wants to serve.?

[10]

McCain's legacy. The senator from Arizona went nuclear during Saturday's debate. That would have been fine if he made any sense. Insteadpetulance was all he had. McCain moaned that repeal would only be applauded in "the liberal bastions of America." [11] He then ended his argument [12] with this: "Today's a very sad day. The commandant of the United States Marine Corps says when your life hangs on the line, you don't want anything distracting. . . . I don't want to permit that opportunity to happen and I'll tell you why. You go up to Bethesda Naval Hospital, Marines are up there with no legs, none. You've got Marines at Walter Reed with no limbs." In all of this rambling, McCainmore than likely neverthought aboutthe service of Staff Sgt. Eric Alva [13]. The senator probabblydoesn't care. Much better to getadorationfrom the Family Research Council, [14]and to disregard the sacrifices of gay troops.

[15]

Ivies and the ROTC. Once the Senate passed the DADT bill, top universities announced they were ready to remove their ROTC bans. "This is an historic development for a nation dedicated to fulfilling its core principle of equal rights," said Columbia University President Lee Bollinger in a statement. "It also effectively ends what has been a vexing problem for higher education, including at Columbia -- given our desire to be open to our military, but not wanting to violate our own core principle against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation."

[16]

University of Connecticut Huskies and history. The Huskies [17]play three steps above the competition.Yesterday the program became a permanent part of basketball collegehistory with its88th consecutive victory, tying John Wooden'sUniversity of California, Los Angeles record.

So Hard to Say Goodbye From Florida to Chicago

There's big news to share with my Bilerico Family!

I am happy and excited to report that my husband, Anthony, has been offered and accepted a high level administrative and faculty law professor position at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois. His position will put him in charge of one of the best legal skills program in the nation, as it was recently ranked number 4 by US News and World Report. Anthony is very fortunate to have received what is considered one of the best jobs in his field so early in his career.

For Anthony, for me, and our professional growth, we had no choice but to accept this great opportunity. This provides Anthony with the necessary security and growth that he didn't have with his current job at Nova Southeastern University and it provides me with many exciting opportunities for my work as an LGBT rights activist, blogger, political consultant, and all around trouble-maker.

Other than the cold winters, this is a perfect fit for us!

Vancouver Queers :: Will You Be at Davie + Howe?

Vancouver is a-talking about what's coming to Davie & Howe in October and it's all the buzz.... Much speculation has been going around about what would be going into the prime intersection in gay-town. While I was glad to hear it's not going to be a Starbuck's or a BlockBuster or yet another Safeway, I couldn't get the skinny on what was coming to the location exactly. I'm super intrigued, though, as I like the way "whatever-it-is" is flirting with the gay community. What I Did Find OutIt's going to be a new Canadian brand and that they are launching in Vancouver before going national. Hmm.... a brand of what? We also heard from a very reliable source that this new yet to be named Canadian brand is going to definitely support the LGBT community. Even though it's quite coy, I'm very curious--curious enough to join the online bandwagon! You should, too.I'll keep my ear to the ground and let you know what I can uncover between now and Oct. I'm excited to see so many cute faces out and about and online! Join me in the fun.

How Nate Berkus Is Helping Honor Gay Suicide Victim Seth Walsh

Today marks the first day of winter, and the closure of a fall season that in many ways was particularly tragic, at least for LGBT youth. Rewind back to September, and the stories of anti-gay bullying that permeated the media. In the days and weeks that followed, stories of LGBT youth (or those who were perceived to be LGBT) who took their own lives to escape bullying and torment from classmates became all too frequent. These deaths so visible in the public eye made very real statistics that have been around for quite some time -- statistics that show that LGBT youth face bullying and harassment in the classroom at epidemic levels.
One of the stories to come out was that of Seth Walsh, a 13-year-old California student who hung himself in his own backyard to get away from anti-gay bullying. From fifth grade on, Seth experienced taunts and violence from his classmates, all because he was gay. They called him "queer" and "faggot," they tripped him, and pushed him in the halls. When Seth's mother, Wendy, went to school administrators to alert them, she was told that they would deal with the issue next year.
Seth Walsh died at a California hospital on September 28, nine days after his mother found him hanging from a tree in the backyard.
Wendy Walsh released a video last week, in partnership with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), talking about her son's death, and why his death (and the deaths of many other LGBT youth) should be a wake up call for all Americans that we're failing in our promise to keep schools safe.
"Seth's school did not care. If they did care about Seth, they would have addressed the problem," Wendy Walsh said. "Seth told me he was gay when he was in the sixth grade. He was a wonderful, loving child, and I loved him for who he was. I can't bring my son back. But schools can make a difference today to keep this from happening to any more young people."
That's a message that openly gay talk show host and designer Nate Berkus wants to follow up on. On December 29, the Nate Berkus Show will run an episode featuring Wendy Walsh. And the show will honor her son Seth in a pretty powerful way.
Berkus teamed up with the New York City LGBT Community Center, and styled a room at the organization in honor of Seth's life. He surprised Wendy Walsh and the rest of Seth's family by unveiling the room on the show, during a segment where Wendy speaks about 'rebuilding a home after tragedy.'
What a powerful thing for the Community Center to do, and a great way to not only remember Seth's life, but to lift up the issue of school safety once again. As Wendy made clear in her video with the ACLU last week, her son's situation underscores the need for legislation like the Student Non-Discrimination Act, and for schools on a district-level to address anti-gay bullying and harassment. Failure to do so, as Wendy can attest, will only lead to tragic outcomes.

Kwanzaa?A Celebration of Family, Community and Culture

Kwanzaa is a holiday based on traditional African values, but with a modern origin. Created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor of Africana Studies at California State University, Long Beach, the intent of Kwanzaa was for African-Americans to have a celebration focused on developing strong families, learning about their heritage, and becoming more united as a culture.

Mike Signorile on heeding the lesson of the path traveled to DADT repeal

Michelangelo Signorile has a good clip up from his show, "Celebrate DADT Repeal, But Heed the Lesson," where a listener from Oklahoma made the argument that Obama's original plan (repeal of DADT via Congress) was what he wanted and eventually what was accomplished, despite calls from certain quarters for him not to appeal the ruling of Circuit Court Judge Virginia Phillips. Mike:
I took the opportunity to discuss why, though this is a big victory for the President, it only happened because of those activists -- including grass roots activists and bloggers - putting the pressure on (I've posted a video from the segment below). Even Senate Armed Service Committee Chairman Senator Levin, just a week before the vote, was pointing to the president's foot-dragging, about which the Human Rights Campaign, throughout the year, was refusing to criticize the White House.
In the end, through a series of fateful events -- from Harry Reid pulling the government spending bill, clearing the schedule, to Senators Lieberman and Collins creating a stand-alone bill -- "don't ask, don't tell" passed. In addition to fate and timing, it was because DADT repeal took on a life of it's own thanks to activists' relentless pressure, disrupting the president's events, protesting Congressional leaders. It's not a coincidence that other promises made by the president, where there was much less pressure from the left early on, didn't pan out. And that's the lesson of the DADT repeal saga for the LGBT movement and for all progressives.

While things worked out positively (thank you Mr. President), it's quite interesting that the revisionist history is already being created, where activists "hated" the President, criticizing the administration's every move and that somehow bloggers were obstructionists. That sounds more like apologist mewling rather than actually reading the archives to see that the call was for the President that the promises the President made, along with his repeated statements to hold him accountable, was all that was going on.
Now admittedly, there was way more rancor here in the comments than in any posts I wrote on DADT, but usually those get conflated with my own opinions on things. Yeah, we were all very tough on the administration, but was there any time where I said he 1) needed to lose in 2012 or 2) needed a primary challenger? No. The fact is I simply wanted promises made to be kept. The Cheetos-PJ wearing crowd pointed out the strategy flops, the foot-dragging and the very real contentious, even combative nature of Press Secretary Robert Gibbs any time a DADT question was asked. Bloggers didn't make that up.

Thursday Watercooler: The day DADT repeal was made law

The dismantling of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" started yesterday. Words fail. So here is the video of President Barack Obama [1] signing the bill that will start the undoing of DADT.

[2]

Republicans fought until the bitter end. I'm going to give the devil his due this morning. The GOP acts like a bulldog when faced with laws it doesn't like. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell [3] tried to add an amendment to the defense authorization bill. McConell wanted military chiefs to be involved in DADT certification. As the new DADT repeal law stands now, Obama, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have to certify that open service will not harm military readiness. Can you imagine what Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Amos [4] would do if he were involved in the process? Anyway Sen. Joe Lieberman ran interference and stopped McConnell's efforts. Lieberman needs a big thank you from all of us.

[5]

FRC is unhinged. Our friends over at the Family Research Council [6] are promising battle when it comes to DADT. "In fact, I've already been in conversations with Hill leaders about holding hearings in the New Year, as well as statutory and legislative oversight steps that can be taken to turn back aspects of the repeal and slow down--if not stop--the rest." This isn't some idle threat. With the House in the hands of the GOP, I expect FRC has many Republicans on speed dial. And we know Sen. John McCain [7] will do anything to keep his status as FRC's best boy.

[8]

Never engage Barney Frank unless you are prepared. Look how Rep. Barney Frank [9] spanked this CNS reporter over gay and straight troops showering together. A question to my conservative brethren and sistern. Gay soldiers shower now with their straight peers. How will this be different with DADT gone?

[10]

Reid returns Choi's ring. Lt. Dan Choi was on hand yesterday at the signing ceremony. Over the summer he gave his West Point ring to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid [11], and told the senator he only wanted it back when DADT was kaput. Reid [12] returned it yesterday.

[13]

What's happening to Manning? Pfc. Bradley Manning [14] has been accused of leaking Afghanistan war reports to Wikilieaks. He's been in the brig since August and now there are charges of torture. The United Nations [15] is examining the claims leveled by his supporters and outlined by reporter Glenn Greenwald [16]. David House [17] chronicles his visits with Manning and the soldier's physical/mental condition. The Pentagon, of course, denies any such mistreatment.

[18]

Rutgers University faces a lawsuit. The parents of Tyler Clementi [19] have informed Rutgers University [20] they plan to sue the school. "It appears Rutgers University failed to act, failed to put in place and/or failed to implement, and enforce policies and practices that would have prevented or deterred such acts, and that Rutgers failed to act timely and appropriately,? his parents said in their notice of suit.

Obama on Israel Out of Step with America

Welcome Instapundit Readers!
At a time when the Jewish State is gaining favor with the American people, it is losing favor with the American president. About six weeks ago, Gallup found, “For the first time since 1991, more than 6 in 10 Americans — 63% — say their sympathies in the Middle East situation lie more with the Israelis than with the Palestinians.“

But, while the American people have been focusing on the health care debate and worrying about the employment situation, the Obama Administration has been quietly pulling the rug out from under our Israeli allies, the staunchest supporter of democracy and opponent of terrorism in the Middle East.
The president delivered an ultimatum to the Israeli Prime Minister, leaving him to cool his heels while he went off to have dinner; that is, the American leader who was discourteous to the leader of a sovereign nation and an ally. Netanyahu wouldn’t accept Obama’s demands. Never before has a U.S. President made such demands of an ally, much less expected him to act exactly as the American leader told him. He treated him a leader would treat an enemy defeated in a contest of arms.
And it’s been reported that, “The United States has diverted a shipment of bunker-busters designated for Israel“:
Officials said the U.S. military was ordered to divert a shipment of smart bunker-buster bombs from Israel to a military base in Diego Garcia. They said the shipment of 387 smart munitions had been slated to join pre-positioned U.S. military equipment in Israel Air Force bases.
Yesterday, we learned, “The Obama administration is now denying U.S. visas to Israeli scientists who work at that nation?s Dimona nuclear reactor.” There seems no purpose to this action, save to thumb his nose at the Jewish State.
Perhaps, we might have learned of the Democrat’s antipathy to Israel during the campaign had the LA Times released a video of a “2003 banquet during which Obama, who was then an Illinois state senator, spoke of his relationship with Rashid Khalidi, a Palestinian-American Orientalist who is known for his frequent criticism of Israel“.
The president seems closer to the views of that radical Palestinian that to those of the people he serves.
I do hope Senators Schumer and Boxer, who have both been very good on Israel, are expressing their concerns directly and strongly to the president and asking him to change course.
UPDATE: Joshuapundit (via Roger Simon) reports:
This is a new policy decision of the Obama administration. Up until now, it was routine for Israeli nuclear scientists and technicians to receive such visas and to study at US universities.
UP-UPDATE: Via Roger Simon who alerted me to the story:
MORE (IMPORTANT): An interesting follow-up to this story has been published by Politico, including a denial by a White House spokesman and an indirect denial from an unnamed Israeli official. The White House denial seems odd given that I was told by a State Department spokesperson that federal law prohibits (see above) discussing individual visa cases. Well, never mind. More importantly the Politico author, Ben Smith, calls the sourcing of the original Maariv article ?a bit hazy? when that article quotes Dr. Zeev Alfassi, a professor of nuclear engineering at Ben Gurion University in the Negev, verbatim on the subject. Hazy sourcing? Well, again, never mind. Pajamas
Media has sent email to Dr. Alfassi and we will see what he has to say about the matter.

Milwaukee's Cool Continues to Rise

Among a slew of U.S. cities that declined steadily following World War II and have experienced varying degrees of revitalization over the past 10 to 15 years, Milwaukee is unquestionably one of the most dramatic comeback stories. Since I first visited this mid-sized city (population 600,000) in the early 1990s, I've continued to be impressed with the steady addition of terrific new restaurants, hotels, and museums, and the renaissance of several formerly prosaic or decrepit neighborhoods (Bay View, the Historic Third Ward, and the gay-nightlife hub of Walker's Point, for example). The city also hosts the nation's largest Pride festival, Pridefest Milwaukee, in early June of each year (the dates in 2011 are June 11 through June 13)....Read Full Post

Matthew Morrison, Chord Overstreet & Cory Monteith in shirtless Glee

The new season of Glee is well underway here in the UK, but I haven't watched any of them yet! Too busy with holidays and selling the house. Last week we were in Barmouth in Wales in a caravan for a week. It was really cool to get away, but there was NO television reception.

What I missed was the guys from Glee getting their shirts off in their production of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. How camp can Glee get?

Matthew Morrison (hot hot hot)

Cory Monteith

Cory doesn't have a hair on his chest AND its getting a bit saggy. You are supposed to be the Quarterback Cory. You need to hit the gym Cory! And get a pair of man bikini briefs.

I havent seen anything of the new sexy blond boy, Chord Overstreet, but he gets his kit off as Rocky.

Tell me guys, leave a comment - WHO has the best chest?

Corrie,
Chord or
Matthew?

Watching St. Petersburg Blossom into the Gulf's Leading Gay Resort

I spent a couple of weeks this spring touring around southern and central Florida, from Miami and Fort Lauderdale up to Orlando and Tampa Bay. Of all the cities in which I spent time, none has changed more for the better since my last visit than St. Petersburg, the state's fourth largest city. Granted, I hadn't been through St. Petersburg and its string of beach communities for nearly a decade, but during that visit, much of the region looked badly in need of a makeover. What's happened in St. Petersburg lately, and an influx of GLBT residents has played a vital role in this transformation, is that downtown has developed into a considerably more vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood with increasing numbers of hip restaurants and shops to match its already stellar crop of museums (one of those key attractions, the Salvador Dali Museum, will be reopening along the downtown waterfront in a spectacular new home on January 11)....Read Full Post

Marriage equality in Maryland in 2011 looks promising

Advocates for same-sex marriage in Maryland, including the seven gay and lesbian members of the state legislature, are optimistic that the legislature will pass a marriage equality bill in 2011 but they are less certain about the prospects for a transgender rights bill. The gains in the number of supporters of a same-sex marriage bill in the November election and commitments by top leaders of the legislature to name marriage equality supporters to the committees that must clear them appear to have tipped the balance in favor of the bill passing, according to advocates and lawmakers. "We remain cautiously optimistic that we've got the votes to push this bill through in this session, and that's what we intend to do," said Del. Heather Mizeur (D-Montgomery County), a lesbian. News surfaced last week that the main bottleneck in preventing the bill's passage during the past few years - its blockage in the state Senate's Judicial Proceedings Committee - would be lifted when the legislature convenes in January. Changes in the committee's makeup due to the election and a decision by one marriage equality opponent to move to another committee make it nearly certain that the committee will vote to send the bill to the Senate floor.

On Feeling A Little More Human

cross-posted at Daily Kos. It's not over.Don't Ask, Don't Tell is not quite dead. Not yet. But today was the critical blow to it. All that remains is for it to thrash its way into that dark night where the past injustices and disgrace of this country go to die. And that will happen soon.Today was an amazing day. I was privileged to be in the audience at the DADT repeal Presidential signing ceremony. I am eternally grateful to Alex Nicholson and Jarrod Chlapowski of Servicemembers United for making that happen.By far, the most personally important moment for me came after the ceremony was over. I actually managed to stop ADM Mullen on his way out. I shook his hand, identified myself by name and rank, and told him who I represented today. I told him about Beloved, about the Servicemembers United Military Partners group, and how much today means to the LGB military families. He thanked me for my service, and for the service and sacrifice of everyone in the Partners group. Then he looked me in the eye and said, "This will happen quickly."I'm not quite ready to believe President Obama when he said that implementation would be done "swiftly and efficiently." But I absolutely trust my Admiral when he tells me how it's going to be. No questions.More under the fold. It means a lot to me, this bill, and not just because this is a major marker on the road to equality for LGBT people. For so many years our government has told us, "You are expendable. You are nothing." It is still legal at the Federal level to deny us housing. It is still legal at the Federal level to deny us jobs. It is still legal at the Federal level to deny us marriage and families. It is still legal at the Federal level to deny us equal immigration rights. But soon, it will be illegal to deny us LGBs the honor of serving our country. When the House and Senate voted for DADT repeal, they didn't just vote for civil rights, or for equality. They spoke out in a voice that cannot but be understood, and they said, "Your lives matter. You are just as American, just as human, as we are, and you are welcomed among us."It is a liberating feeling to be freed of the burden of mandatory secrecy and shame. It is an affirming feeling to be welcomed. I cannot help but think of the people I know and love who have suffered under this law, myself included, and I wonder how this will change all of us. I can only imagine the growth and blossoming that will happen. As my friend Dave said today, "We've all internalized this so much. It's not just everyone else's attitudes that will change, but our own attitudes about ourselves." He's right. For myself, I am feeling a bit more human than I did a week ago. There is much work still to be done, particularly for our trans brothers and sisters. This law does nothing to help them, yet they were there alongside us LGBs, working and pushing and sacrificing. We must not fail. We dare not fail. It's not just our rights we are fighting for. It's our lives, and the lives of our families. And today, we celebrate as our lives matter a little more.

Dear Editor,

In honor of National Coming Out Day (October 11, 2010), we at Affirmations would like to take a moment to reflect on the continuous benefits to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community (LGBT) brought about since Michigan’s recently passed smoke free law has been implemented.

During the coming out process, many people seek to connect with the LGBT community for support, encouragement, networking and socializing. It is wonderful for the LGBT community to now socialize and connect at bars and restaurants in Michigan without facing the dangers of second hand smoke.

Historically, statistics have shown that the LGBT community is 50% more likely to start and/or continue smoking compared to its straight counterpart. We are hopeful …

Coming Out Trans

Coming out is a pretty important process.

And it is a process. For trans people, coming out is made a little more complicated, and the degree of complication follows the sort of trans person they are.

For some trans people, coming out is really and truly just a matter of wearing clothes that make you feel better about yourself.

For others, it's about performing, about creating an illusion, about impersonation.

For even others, coming out is a monumental undertaking that once done, coming out as something else is easy.

I'm not qualified to speak about coming out for every sort of trans person. I don't know the struggles that a genderqueer person has to go through, or a bigender person who is both, or a person for whom gender is meaningless and detrimental to a degree inversely proportional to the degree for which gender is of great meaning and beneficial to me.

Amar en Tiempos Revueltos - season 5, recap 9

Remember how last week Teresa walked in on Rosa being comforted by Ana? Yeah. Teresa keeps playing that unfortunate moment in her head as well. And by the look on her face she’s still none too pleased about it either.

An employee asks how Ana is doing, and Teresa says that she’s fine and that Ana is still in her office, but that she’s very busy (with Rosa, but she doesn’t tell her that).

Moments later Ana and Rosa walk out of Ana’s office so that they can go to Rosa’s audition. Teresa overhears them talking from a small distance. Rosa is telling Ana she doesn’t need to come with her and Rosa says that everybody should be as lucky to have Ana accompany them. Ana responds by telling Rosa that she’s not ‘everybody’.

Ouch. That stings.

When Ana returns, Teresa is doing inventory and is still quite upset with Ana. Ana, however, is none the wiser and asks why Teresa is still there. It takes Teresa a lot of strength to turn around and face Ana. She tells Ana that she’s very busy working on the inventory. Teresa ignores Ana when she asks why Teresa is behaving so weird, but Teresa says it is fine and that nothing is going on.

Oh you two. Just kiss and get it over with, will you.

We get a myriad of scenes where Héctor is defending his choice to stand up for an abused child and continues investigating the case, Ana discussing Teresa’s weird behavior and Teresa discussing Ana’s unusual behavior i.e. not as sincere or affectionate as she used to be.

A day or so later Alfonso reads a damaging article in the newspaper about his father being in prison and how this affects, or could affect, his boxing career. Héctor is convinced his boss is sending him a message about him investigating the child abuse case and isn’t very happy.

Teresa later confronts Ana about the article how she could have and should have stopped it from being printed. Ana, however, tries to pretend her nose is bleeding and tells Teresa it wouldn’t matter either way. After all, what was written is true. Teresa cannot believe what she is hearing and leaves in a huff, leaving an upset and surprised Ana behind.

<!--pagebreak-->

At the café, Alfonso is being confronted by his rival about the article who keeps taunting Alfonso about his father being in prison until Alfonso finally snaps and hits him in the face.

Ana, meanwhile, is having dinner with Rosa and the two are glad for a different scenery and different company. It turns out that Rosa didn’t get the part she wanted. Ana tells her that “life’s that way” and that sometimes we attach more importance to things we don’t even have. Ana and Rosa get a little too close for comfort, but I guess this is the writer’s way of keeping things on edge.

A little later, Nono comes rushing in asking Ana if she heard the news about what happened to Alfonso, but she clearly doesn’t as she wasn’t even there and too busy to notice anything but Rosa. Nono tells what happened and Ana hurries off to find Alfonso.

Nono meanwhile stays a bit to tease and pester Rosa about having ulterior motives, and though Rosa doesn’t deny anything, she looks a bit upset about it too. It seems that her conscience may be having a bit of a turf war.

At home, Teresa and Héctor are discussing the abuse case; it seems that there was a certain father involved, and not the blood relative kind of father. Teresa warns Héctor that it will be his downfall if he proves the father abused the boy.

Later at the Stores things are still a bit chilly between Ana and Teresa. Teresa wasn’t feeling well the day before and took a day off and Ana is checking in on how she was doing (being pregnant and all), but Teresa says she is fine now.

Rosa and Ana, however, continue to bond. Ana tells her of a friendship that is crumbling (the one with Teresa of course) and Rosa tries to make Ana laugh because she is too serious.

Meanwhile, Rosa has been making friendlies with the Marquis of Pontina and introduces him to Ana when she spots him during their conversation.

Teresa has a conversation with a co-worker about Ana. The co-worker is concerned that Ana is losing interest in the work she is doing.

Teresa later goes to Ana’s office and rummages through her desk. She finds a picture of her and Ana when the two were in the earlier stages of their friendship and she flashes back to some happier moments between the two of them… including the elevator kiss!

“Happy times”, she tells herself. “Where did they go?” Indeed, Teresa, where did those happy times go?
<!--pagebreak-->

Ana, meanwhile, is out with Rosa and friends, but she’s not having that much fun. She says she’s worried about Alfonso because he hasn’t shown up yet, but Rosa tells her that he might just be training.

At the Stores, Teresa and a co-worker have some news about José Maria (where’s he been?) to tell to a close friend of his, his baby’s momma (though no one knows that seeing as how he is totally married to someone else). José Maria is, as it turns out, dead. The girl faints and clutches her stomach.

We flash to Alfonso and Ana having an argument about him standing her up at the get together and says to him that she thinks it is a much bigger thing that they are dealing with – she questions whether or not he regrets marrying her.

At the Stores, Teresa is talking to Rosa’s friend about the attention the Marquis of Pontina is giving Rosa and the friend tells Teresa that a girl as lonely as Rosa should be given attention like that.

An older woman walks up to the two and asks where “the slut”  (meaning Rosa) that they are usually with has gone. Uh oh. Something tells me that this is NOT good news. The woman spots Rosa by the elevator and walks up to her – turns out that this woman is the wife of the Marquis of Pontina.

Teresa later retells the story in full detail to Ana. You can clearly see that Teresa is completely amused by it all. She really doesn’t like Rosa. Ana tells her that Teresa should have prevented it because it is not good for the integrity of the Stores and also orders Teresa to make sure that they will fully reimburse the Marquis of Pontina for all the stuff he has bought at the Stores.

Alfonso is having a heart-to-heart with his brother in law Héctor and tells him that he thinks Ana is the one who regretted marrying him.

Back at the Stores Ana, Teresa and a co-worker are discussing the funeral for José Maria and wonder if Ana will go. Ana tells them that of course she is going; he was an employee after all. The co-worker says she’ll order the wreath and Teresa, a bit conniving, asks whether or not the co-worker asked what Ana wants to be written on the ribbon of the wreath. Ana does not like being upstaged like that.

Still a bit upset, Ana isn’t too pleased with Héctor when he gives her a call about Alfonso and she asks him politely, albeit firmly, to stay out of her and Alfonso’s business and that if there is something to be sorted out, it’ll be between herself and Alfonso.

At work the next day, Ana backs out of going to the funeral and Teresa lies about having told Rosa about the gifts. Rosa later shows up with those gifts and things get a bit fuzzy for me here. Rosa wants to return the gifts, despite the reimbursed money for the Marquis. Teresa is adamant that Ana wants her to have them. There’s a bit of a standoff and Rosa tells her that she doesn’t want anything from the Marquis and leaves the presents.
<!--pagebreak-->

When Ana later returns, she is surprised to find the gifts there and asks the other co-worker what is going on. Ana, from then on, is convinced Teresa has been lying to her about the gifts and goes to the funeral to confront Teresa. They both accuse each other of being different and having changed. It’s not a pretty sight. Not to mention that they’re doing it at the funeral of José Maria.

Teresa tells Ana that she has seen her change since Rosa came in the picture and Ana then accuses Teresa of not being a good friend.

Teresa asks what happened to Ana that she used to be so caring and good with her friends and that now she’s giving her friends and even Alfonso the cold shoulder. The two come to a standstill over Ana’s marriage to Alfonso and Ana walks away, clearly upset.

Next week:
We are now entering what I’d like to call ‘the dark ages’. Ana and Teresa are still cold towards each other, but it’s killing them both on the inside. Teresa is taking up new ventures, Héctor is transferred, and Rosa has gone and got herself attached to a brothel. Read previous recaps here.
