Kwanzaa is a holiday based on traditional African values, but with a modern origin. Created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor of Africana Studies at California State University, Long Beach, the intent of Kwanzaa was for African-Americans to have a celebration focused on developing strong families, learning about their heritage, and becoming more united as a culture.
