San Diego LGBT Pride donates $10,000 to Stepping Stone by Staff Reporter

San Diego LGBT Pride donated $10,000 last week to Stepping Stone of San Diego, Inc., which for 10 years has provided the GLBT community with alcohol and drug rehabilitation support through a variety of residential and non-residential treatment programs. The check was presented to Stepping Stone representatives at San Diego Pride’s board of directors meeting on Sept. 15.

“This type of community support mandates that we continue solving the financial issues that have been with us for some years now,” said Stepping Stone’s Board Chair Tom Reise. “On behalf of our entire board and staff, and especially our clients, we express deep gratitude and appreciation for this gift.”

To date, San Diego LGBT Pride has given more than $1…

Fannie bares her teeth
Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae - the hillbilly kissin’ cousins of the nation’s secondary mortgage market - instituted a long-needed reform to the sale process of its REO (foreclosed) properties. The “First Look” program gives buyers purchasing a primary residence for their own use, a 15-day head-start before investors can submit offers on the same property.

Nearly 18 months ago I met with the field staff of Congresswoman Susan Davis’ office on this matter and I was glad to see both Fannie and Freddie get on board. The problem in a nutshell is this: Investors, including large syndicators began snapping up foreclosures at an astonishing rate converting large percentages of owner-occupied housing into rental stock.

Planning a Whistler Ski Adventure

Ski season is just around the corner in North America's largest, and in the opinion of many, most beautiful ski resort community, Whistler, BC - the slopes usually get going around the third week of November. This friendly, attractive, and upscale town 77 miles north of Vancouver hosts one of the top GLBT winter events in the world, Whistler WinterPride, in late January (this year the celebration runs from January 26 to February 2). If you're thinking of attending this year, you'd be wise to start looking into hotel accommodations now, as some of the top properties can book up fast - here's our Whistler Gay Hotels Guide, which includes a mix of gay-friendly resorts and B&Bs. Whistler is good fun anytime of year. Well, personally, I'm not much for late spring - when many businesses take a hiatus, and the terrain can be a bit muddy. But the other three seasons are gorgeous, and there's still good skiing here well into April on Whistler Mountain, and until mid-May on Blackcomb (after which there's glacier skiing, starting in late June)....Read Full Post

The “ZIO’S EXPERIENCE” with 4 lovely lesbians
Greetings everyone, hope your week is going well. What a week in our busy world! The Senate did not pass DADT. The Republicans decided to start running on platforms which the Democrats created and former President Bill Clinton had some great words of advice for President Obama. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction!

This week my guests were 4 lovely lesbians, Christina our Editor, her partner Alice and their friends Joergie and Neally.

We selected ZIO’S Italian Restaurant on El Cajon Blvd in North Park. When I arrived, owner Darren James greeted me with his warm embrace and handshake. We have chatted several times on Facebook and this was our actual first time meeting in person.

My ladies had not yet arrived so I asked Darren to give me a tour of…

Review: K?s Choice Echo Mountain tour in Eindhoven

K’s Choice were supposed to play at the Effenaar shortly before Christmas 2010.

But I heard their American record company planned a US promo tour, which took precedent to their European one, so part of their European tour got postponed to a later date. I was informed the Eindhoven date was set for March 2nd, 2011. That was fine with me until I found out Serena Ryder and Melissa Etheridge were going to play Halifax Metro Centre the exact same day. Well, poop!

K’s Choice kicked off the Eindhoven concert with Favorite Adventure, a song they wrote for bass player Eric Grossman’s wedding. It was clear that this audience showed up to see K’s Choice - even though they gave opening act Arid, fellow Belgians, a shot. I have heard of them, and the one song I recognized off their set list was Too Late Tonight (which they played early on, but judging from the response from the audience, it might have been better if they played it towards the end of their set).

Singer Sarah announced at the start that this show consisted of two parts: an acoustic set and a full on “rock and roll” set. It’s very much like their latest album Echo Mountain of which the first disc contains up-tempo songs, and the second one consists of the slower songs and ballads. I was glad they decided to turn that around for the show and start off with the acoustic set first to get everybody warmed up and ready to rock out later.

The acoustic set lasted about half an hour (it seemed shorter), after which the band took a quick break, allowing their roadies to ready the stage for a regular rock concert.

I was pleasantly surprised when the band also played Virgin State Of Mind: Buffy fans may recognize this song from an episode in which K’s Choice had a cameo. They, of course, played their biggest hit - worldwide - Not An Addict as well.

I had a great time people watching: it almost felt like Pride. The audience consisted of people of all ages (anything from teenagers to your mom and dad), straight couples, lots of queer women. I eavesdropped on a conversation happening behind me where a straight guy introduced his lesbian friend to K’s Choice. (He, too, appreciated Sarah Bettens’s singing voice.)

K’s Choice came back for two encores. The first one was kicked off by Gert performing Shadowman, a song which (in a past tour) he had paired up with Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. It’s a slightly haunting song, and in total contrast to the rest of the show, but a good indicator the show is coming to an end. Both encores consisted of songs that are slower and have a more intimate feel to them.
<!--pagebreak-->

If I remember correctly, they ended the show with God In My Bed. People in the audience either hummed along, or were silently listening. And I was reminded of the fact there once was a time where smoking at venues and public spaces was still allowed: moments like these lent themselves to fish out one’s lighters and sway along to the music. Not anymore. People didn’t even take out their cell phones do to something similar.

Sarah thanked the audience for coming out (no pun intended), and said that playing at a sold out venue on their first date back in the Netherlands was wonderful. I had a great evening.

In case you’re interested, I found a slide show of band pictures taken at the Eindhoven show here.

The Compton’s Cafeteria riot

“This is gay San Francisco. An inside look at the life of San Francisco’s homosexuals. They number 90,000— at least according to police department figures. They work to hide their sexual orientation by day, and only at night do they show their true colors.

The city’s downtown Tenderloin District is the home ground of the always visible segment of the city’s homosexuals and transvestites. The drag queens are here at Turk and Taylor.

So frequent were the fights between screaming queens in the 2 to 3 a.m. period that police — even in permissive San Francisco — had had enough, and asked an all night cafeteria to close by midnight.”

So began the 2005 documentary “Screaming Queens; The Riot at the Compton&rs…

SNL = Saturday Night's Lesbian?

Congratulations to Kate Mckinnon for being the first openly gay human to be on SNL :) Thank you to my pizza pie Sarah for letting me know!MSN had this to say: "Saturday Night Live" has increased their collection of XX chromosomes by adding Upright Citizen's Brigade sketchtress Kate McKinnon to the show. McKinnon, formerly of LOGO's "Big Gay Sketch Show," becomes the fourth female in the current cast and will make her Studio 8H debut on the April 7, Sofia Vergara-hosted episode. McKinnon has done several UCB solo shows and has cast herself in delightfully demented roles. McKinnon also becomes SNL's first openly lesbian cast member, one who outed herself at a church-sponsored theatre camp. "I was speaking in front of 250 people and thought 'Wouldn't it be wacky if I came out during this speech,'" she told OutImpact. "It was scary but it was fun."She sounds fun. Now if only they could get a black woman on the show, we'd be good!

HIV/AIDS and the Military After 28 Years

Randy Shilts very accurately described the early stages of the treatment of HIV/AIDS in the military in his ground breaking book And The Band Played On. In short he described a military that when faced with an epidemic that at the time was largely viewed as being a gay disease, against the odds, they chose the higher road. The military’s initial response while far from perfect, was among the most progressive at the time.

Among other things the military made the wise choice of letting medical fact rather than social stigma and fear guide their policy. They recognized early on that HIV was not transmitted through casual contact and therefor those who had contracted HIV were not a threat to their coworkers. That realization led to a sensible policy tha…

New Book looks at the history of New York Nightlife...THE FUN: THE SOCIAL PRACTICE OF NIGHTLIFE IN NYC

Surveying the evolving nature of nightlife in New York City, THE FUN: The Social Practice of Nightlife in NYC
is a first-of-its-kind publication, documenting the new forms of
nightlife practitioners to emerge since the turn of the millennium.
Through profiles of over 30 artists, including the royalty of Manhattan
nightlife like Susanne Bartsch and Ladyfag; hybrid forms like Xtapussy
and FCKNLZ; the continuation of minimal wave and goth communities
through Pendu Disco; and the vibrant queer scenes of JUDY, Frankie
Sharp, and My Chiffon is Wet, THE FUN documents the rich
contemporary cultural activity keeping NYC as weird and innovative as
decades past.

Accompanying these profiles are essays by a range of
voices in the nightlife, including artists Rob Roth and Genesis
P-Orridge, curators and critics Claire Bishop and Jake Yuzna, as well as
journalist Michael Musto providing both historical context and
contemporary understanding of nightlife as a vital artistic practice
that has been marginalized by the arts sector for hundreds of years.

THE FUN traces the history of nightlife as it has evolved,
from the explosion of large and small discos throughout the 1970s like
Studio 54, which paved the way for 80s megaclubs; the candy-colored club
kid movement of Michael Alig and the Limelight in the early 90s; the
parallel expansion of the boundary shattering merger of drag,
performance, and music in downtown venues such as the Pyramid Club and
Mother; the rise of Brooklyn as a new focal point in the 2000s with the
emergence of Luxx, Secret Project Robot, Silent Barn and other hybrid
arts/music/nightlife venues; and on into the many vibrant forms found
today.

(Paperback, 8.5 x 10.33 inches, 336 pages, ISBN:
978-1-57687-659-6, $39.95)

Richie Rich and Traver Rains, aka Heatherette got to enjoy the club scene as well as celebrity and notoriety. Pop culture loved Heatherette, but so did society princesses. Everyone
from Paris Hilton and Lydia Hearst to the Backstreet Boys, Foxy Brown
and Gwen Stefani was drawn to their taste for sparkly streetwear glam.
"The clothes were attention getting and fun," Heatherette's longtime
friend and muse Amanda Lepore remembers. "They had a distinct look,
which at that time -- everyone wanted it. David LaChapelle was using it. All the
celebrities wanted it. It was in demand." (from Paper Mag).

Since their last show Rains moved to LA to pursue photography
while Rich is set to launching two fashion lines this spring: Rich

Lace designer, Chantelle Warr. Although busy, Rich still has his eye on
the club scene. "It's been fun watching the new generation of kids. When
I moved to New York I was 'the new' to the old nightlife generation,"
Richie says. "Now it's fun to see all the new kids coming on the block
and dressing up. I feel like the style is coming back. Who knows, maybe

Which Member of One Direction is Gay?

Which Member of One Direction is Gay? Are there any gay members of One Direction? Do any of them actually know themselves? Take a look at the history of boy bands with members coming out as gay.

Irish boy band Westlife star Mark Feehily declared he was gay and in a relationship with Kevin McDaid, who used to be in boyband V. Westlife memebrs fully supported Mark as did Westlife's fans.

Irish boy band Boyzone were the biggest boy band in Britain - six number ones, 10 million albums, sold-out arena tours with a not a dry seat in the house - and Stephen Gately was (secretly at first) gay. Sadly Stephen passed away last year from a congenital heart problem.

Lance Bass from US boy band N-Sync came out in 2006. "I knew that I was in this popular band and I had four other guys' careers in my hand, and I knew that if I ever acted on it or even said (that I was gay), it would overpower everything," said Bass at the time, referring to bandmates Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick, JC Chasez and Justin Timberlake.

Jonathan Knight from US Boy Band New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) is reported by Perez Hilton as gay. Johnathan dated a Brazilian model (Kyle Wilker), until he spilled the beans on his boy band boyfriends.

UK boy band Take That have no out gay members. Robbie Williams has joked many times about being gay but has sued The Mirror for libelous reports about his sexuality.

McFly are very cool and very supportive of their gay fan base. The boys recently got their willies out on the stage of gay London club institution G.A.Y. The one on the left is particularly cute. He has an amazing body.

So which one of One Direction do you think is gay?

The one in purple?

The One Direction boys are working very hard on the X Factor to make it in the tough world of music. I'm sure they will do well winning or otherwise. They really don't need speculation on their sexuality, but they are sure going to get it.

JLS last year's X Factor definitely all look straight. It will be interesting to see if a boy band every has an out gay member from the get-go.

Comments please guys!

How to work in/move to a gay supportive country where same-sex marriage is legal?

I'm looking to work in/maybe move to, a country where same-sex marriage is legal and gay people are treated equally. Any recommendations? Any advice from expatriates?

I've been in a committed and loving relationship with my partner for over 6 years. Looking forward, I would like to move to a country where I can get married, live, work, raise a family and be openly gay in a country with as much respect from the law and the community as everyone else. I'm lucky to be well-qualified and am considered talented in my work, with a Master's, several published papers, and a Bachelor's from an Ivy League university in Electrical Engineering and Physics, and 6 years of work experience as an expert on solar energy and semiconductor technology. I've business consulting experience and am trilingual, in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Unfortunately I also grew up in a place where most gay people are closeted at work and society. Most gay people face heavy and regular discrimination and ignorance in most major areas of life, from the law, society, employment, family, to the government. It's a daily toll to be closeted, and it's very difficult to have a home of your own if you're gay, not to mention raise a family.

I would like to work in a city/country where I can be out, equal, and have my children proud to tell their schoolmates they have two mothers. Of course, I would like to be able to have my partner join me as soon as possible.

Preferably this is a place where, while same-sex marriage is legal, gay people are treated the same as straight people, and it's easy for new people to fit in. A place where people don't avert their eyes when you hold hands with your partner in public, don't blink when you tell them you're gay, and you and your partner are invited, as a matter of course, to straight friends' homes. It'd be good if it's a city or place open to different races and cultures.

What would your advice be? What cities, places and companies to work for would you recommend?

If you've moved cities or countries before with your partner, what was your experience? How did you secure a job in a new city? What did you do to make new friends and get used to a new culture? How did you and your partner make such a huge life change as easily manageable and successful as possible?

I hope that you, my reader, may benefit somehow from my fuck-ups.Lesson 1: Forget her actual words. They mean nothing. She might say something like "Leave me alone." It seems like this would be an easy fix. Leave her alone. A logical, linear thinker might make the mistake of leaving her alone. And then her feelings will be hurt because you left her alone. To her, you don't care about her at all because you left her alone. What she really wants is for you to fight to be with her, to not leave her side, to comfort her and be present with her.Until the next time she says me "Leave me alone." Then, you might try to be by her side and be present with her or comfort her and that bitch will try to shank you. Because this time, "Leave me alone" really means "Get the hell away from me!" Scratch your head all you want... you will NOT figure this out so don't waste your time trying. Take away: There is no take away. Women are crazy.--------------------------------------------------------------Lesson 2: Women will spill their pain out before you and you had better not try to help clean that shit up.A million times I have listened to women share a problem or concern with me. Very often, it would be an easy fix. I would even wonder why we were talking about it when the solution is so simple. And yet it never is.Example:Her: "My co-worker is such a difficult woman to work with. Every day when we have lunch together, she always complains about her health problems and it starts to bring me down. I try to tell her what she can do to change her health but she ignores my advice. By the end of the week, I feel so negative and I don't want to be around her or spend any time with her."Me: "Stop eating with her."Her: (silence with an icy glare)Me: "What?"Her: "I don't want you to solve my problems. I just want you to listen to them!"(Like your co-worker wants you to do with her?)Take Away: There is no take away. Women are crazy.--------------------------------------------------------------Lesson 3: Everyone wants you. You may not know this but when you think someone is being polite, you are a stupid fool. They want you and you are just too dumb to know it. Thank God she is there to point it out to you. Otherwise, you would never know when you are being hit on. (My dad's wife subscribes to this viewpoint - she's so cute!)Take Away: There is no take away. Women are crazy. ----------------------------------------------------------------

January 2012 - Life on the road (and my own bed)

I've been wanting to share a lot that's happened over the last 5 or so weeks with you guys, but it seemed so overwhelming because I didn't know exactly where/how to start. Yesterday I read a musician's blog and what she does is summarizes her work by the month. So a few days into a month, she'll write about the preceding month. I dig that, so I shall henceforth be stealing this idea from Hannah:)I won't bore you with ALL of the details of how I got to this point, but basically, I spent months and months in my early-mid 20s booking and tour managing some of my indie friends' tours. This was thousands of miles traveled, several hotels and friends' couches crashed, and lots and lots of gas station food partaken...ofeth. All of this was of course after spending weeks booking the actual shows one by one, and talking to people with names like 'Snake' and 'Timber' asking if my friend(s) could play at their venue. For every show I booked, I got at least 10 'no's. I also heard hundreds of 'no's when I was publishing my music magazine INTERLUDE.So things haven't always been easy and I've spent plenty of time sleeping on the floor, the couch, and every once in a while, in beds. All the while though, I've been networking and making friends in various production roles, at various levels of success. The tenacity paid off when just a couple of days before New Year's, I was asked to help out with the production of a show out of town. The artist was CeeLo Green, and the show was the headlining Allstate BCS Fanfest event in New Orleans. So on New Year's Eve, I watched my new boss sing during the NYE countdown in Times Square, and a few hours later, I was hard at work helping to advance his next show.It was in New Orleans that I met CeeLo, the Goodie Mob, and CeeLo's incredible band for the first time. They're all amazingly talented and some of the nicest people I've ever met. The city was SO full of energy during these few days in particular because of the big game, and aside from being physically exhausted from all the work we did, I was on cloud 9 the entire time. I also got to meet this cool performer named DJ Ruckus. You guys should check him out. He is a REALLY sweet guy, and kinda blew my mind with how talented he is.(New Orleans stage during soundcheck!>(CeeLo's lighting/video director Fraser and me after the New Orleans show...right outside our production office/backstage area)I flew back to my new home in Houston for a few days to work on the next shows...and then it was back in the air. I can already tell that this year I will probably spend more time in the security line at airports than in my own bedroom. But do you see me complaining? Nope! And if you ever do, please feel free to slap me about my person.January was capped off the same way it started: EPIC...ly. Or whatever.I was flown to Miami and Montego Bay, Jamaica for 2 big shows. Miami's show was at the Fontainebleau hotel in their venue LIV and Jamaica's was the Jazz and Blues Festival where CeeLo was Saturday night's headliner. Friday night's headliner was Celine Dion! I definitely got spoiled with our accommodations that week and I'm not sure I'll know how to do anything without wearing a plush robe and having room service every 3 hours now that I've tasted the good life. I was also in the same room with Bobby Brown for a couple of hours while a Jamaican lady sang a 45 minute Whitney Houston medley to about 25k people...needless to say it was all sorts of awkward, but thats another story for another time. Anyhoo...I love robes!(My awesome view from my room in Miami)(The view from the hotel's private beach....cause THAT happens)It's pretty awesome to get to see everyone at the top of their game. Everyone in this team comes in ready to work hard, do their thing, and then celebrate just as passionately. I dig the pace of it all. And I think I'm going to like it here. I feel like Annie just moved into Mr. Warbucks' place and having a look around.(My view of soundcheck in Jamaica, mon!)While I was at the hotel in Jamaica, I saw these two chicks playing pool. My dar went into overdrive. I said to myself, I says 'Self...I spy homosexuals.' And Self agreed with me. But we were in Jamaica which isn't very lezzy friendly, AND I didn't wanna just walk up to them and say "LESBIANS!...welcome." No, this wasn't Weho, after all. So I did what any self-respecting gay blogger would have done: I walked up to them and I said 'If I said 'Shane is my homegirl,' would it mean anything to you?" They paused...stared at me for a while--enough time for me to be frightened even though they were a good 6 inches shorter than me and I could TOTALLY outrun them--and then one of them said, "HELL YEAH IT WOULD!" and we all hugged. It was awesome!! I recommend it as an icebreaker at your local deli or Jamaican hotel situation.Oh and did I mention everyone is British?? Well, not everyone. But like...more than half of the people I deal with are incredibly English and it rocks my world. Here are background singers Annabel and Jodie. The girls were drinking TEA. Can't make this stuff up!Not sure what's on the horizon for February and the rest of 2012, but I do know it will be filled with experiences I've never had before, new friends, hard work, hard play, and more robes than you can shake a robe at!

Moldovan parliamentarians called on to combat discrimination and hatred

Currently, the Moldovan Parliament is debating an anti-discrimination law which in its current form provides protection against discrimination on various grounds, including sexual orientation.

The draft law was approved by the Moldovan government and is now in the hands of parliamentarians.

The proposed law caused strong reactions and criticism from religious organisations, encouraged by right wing American evangelicals, who are calling for the rejection of the entire draft law labelling it as a ‘gay law’.

A number of parliamentarians are also calling for a deletion of sexual orientation from the draft law and are making hateful and openly homophobic statements.

Former interim president of Moldova and the leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu has declared for the media on March 17, that his party will not vote for the anti-discrimination law:

We are liberals, but we are healthy and we want a healthy family. Homosexuality is a deviation, nature is nature, but it doesn’t mean that we need to put them [homosexuals] in the forefront. We don't take patients from psychiatric institutions to bring them on our main square. With all the respect for them, I will not vote.

On the same day, a demonstration of 150 opponents of the anti-discrimination law took place outside the Moldovan Parliament under the slogan ‘homosexuals stay at home!’.

ILGA-Europe is seriously concerned about the increasingly volatile situation in Moldova: aggressive homophobic rhetoric by religious organisations and a number of parliamentarians already resulted in threats being made to the members of GenderDoc-M, the leading Moldovan LGBTI rights organisation. Alexei Marcicov, President of the organisation, was verbally abused and had stones thrown at him near his home. Other human rights defenders supporting the anti-discrimination law have been threatened on the streets and near their homes.

Linda Freimane, Co-Chair of ILGA-Europe’s Executive Board said:

We are concerned with the situation in Moldova which is worsening with every day. There are serious concerns regarding growing homophobic sentiments and safety of LGBTI activists. ILGA-Europe calls on Moldovan politicians to immediately refrain from further incitement to hatred and act responsibly. It is their duty to protect all citizens from discrimination, particularly those who belong to marginalised and vulnerable communities.

Martin K.I. Christensen, Co-Chair of ILGA-Europe’s Executive Board, added:

Moldova is under obligation to introduce comprehensive anti-discrimination law and protect its citizens from discrimination on any ground, including sexual orientation. Moldova committed to passing an anti-discrimination law protecting all minorities under its visa liberalisation agreement with the European Union and within the EU-Moldova Action Plan. We call on the EU to assert its position with the Moldovan authorities and hold them accountable under their obligations.

As a Council of Europe member state, Moldova has supported the adoption of the Council of Europe’s Recommendation to combating discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity. Additionally, the United Nation’s Human Rights Committee called on Moldova to introduce such a law in 2009.

Naked from the back

The five Take That members sang on top of a raised platform while the remainder of the stage was covered in male dancers wearing nothing but flesh-coloured jockstraps.

As the song continued the men re-enacted the five poses on the front of the band?s new album, Progress.

Congrats on Gay Marriage Hawaii! Now, Where to Honeymoon?

This week - quite possibly at any moment - Hawaii will become the 15th state to legalize gay marriage, with Illinois expected to follow in a matter of days. Congrats to, interestingly, the two states most associated with President Barack Obama. In the spirit of celebration, I thought I'd share a handful of the most special resorts and inns in Hawaii for planning a destination wedding and honeymoon (I'll do a similar blog on Illinois next week, with a decided focus, as one might expect, on Chicago). The happy challenge in heavenly Hawaii is narrowing down the extensive list of worthy options - you've got four major islands to choose from, along with a couple of lovely smaller ones, and dozens of properties that have already begun embracing the same-sex wedding market (starting a couple of years ago, when Hawaii legalized gay civil unions)....Read Full Post

SLDN Releases Statement on Major Margaret Witt Ruling

Statement from Aubrey Sarvis, Army veteran and executive director of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network:

“This is a stunning victory for Major Witt and all gay and lesbian patriots serving our country today. Clearly federal courts are trending towards allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly. It is only a matter of time before this happens throughout the armed forces, but these cases are slowly working their way through the legal process and it could well be years before there is finality in the courts. The favorable Witt decision, like the Log Cabin Republicans ruling, only underscores the urgent need for the Senate to take up repeal in the lame duck session.”

A psychological look at HIV
I am sometimes asked to help facilitate workshops at The Center for people who are HIV-positive. As an HIV- person, I consider this quite an honor…and I have learned A LOT in doing so. I’ve learned that, for many people, an HIV+ diagnosis feels like your world is falling apart. After the initial shock wears off, most people feel a lot of grief and depression. Over the years, so many people have asked me some version of these two questions: “How do I keep my sanity when I get an HIV+ diagnosis?” “What do I do when it feels like my life is falling apart?”
To answer these questions, here are some questions that I have offered participants in workshops for HIV+ folks. [Note: If you’re HIV-, these questions may still be…

Brian Embly: 1st Runner-Up: 2013 Coverboy of the Year

Feature Story:

Brian Embly

The shy guy is not the one you expect to be baring it all, but that's exactly who Brian Embly is. The Hagerstown native who now calls Alexandria home may manage a clothing outlet by day, but the only clothes you'll find him in a few nights a week are his socks as he dances for patrons at Secrets in Southeast D.C.
''Growing up I used to be really self-conscious,'' the 22-year-old explains. ''That was the biggest thing about working at Secrets. 'Oh, my God. I'm going to be naked.' I'm actually pretty shy. When it comes to social situations, especially meeting new people, I'm usually the one to stand back.''
While letting it all hang out is definitely helping him become more outgoing, Brian says there is one bit that he tries to hide: the occasional puff he needs from his inhaler to treat his asthma. Did the other kids make fun of him for it when he was growing up? Does he fear others will pity his minor malady? No and no. Brian has no idea why he's inhaling on the down-low.

Coverboy: Brian

''I never got teased for having asthma,'' he shares, laughing at the memory. ''A lot of kids thought the inhaler was cool. Like, 'Can I try it?' No, you can't! I need this. Every pump counts. Still to this day, when I need to use my inhaler, I'm very secretive about it. I turn away from people to take a quick puff. I've always been that way. I don't know why that is. No clue.''
Having asthma, though, seems to have been a psychological burden as much as physical one. At least, it used to be. It's a lesson he learned in Texas, the backstory behind his October answer to something he never wants to do again: swim a mile.
At 14, Brian started working at a camp resort, leading craft lessons for the kiddie campers. At 16, however, he was eligible to be a camp lifeguard. He took to the new job so well that management asked him to be a lifeguard supervisor. He'd just need to get certified, which meant heading out to Austin, Texas.

Coverboy: Brian

''We did all our training courses in the University of Texas swimming pool, big Olympic-size pool,'' Brian recalls. ''One of the tests we had to pass in order to get our certification was to swim a mile. It didn't matter how long it took us, we just had to swim it. It was like 9 o'clock in the morning, first thing. Everybody started at the same time. I wasn't last, surprisingly. But I got about halfway through, and I got really sick to my stomach. I couldn't breathe. I had to stop and I actually got sick. They were like, 'Well, you have to finish.' 'You're kidding me. I'm sick. I'm exhausted. I can't breathe.' They were like, 'Well, take a quick 5-to-10 minute break. Drink some water. But you still have to finish.' So I had to jump back in the pool at the spot I got out. It took me about 35 minutes to actually finish, but it was awful.''
Awful as it might've been, it helped Brian turn a corner.
''That did teach me something,'' says Brian. ''When I turned 7, I had a really bad breathing spell, had to be rushed to the emergency room. Come to find out that I had an extreme case of asthma. I've had asthma my entire life. As a kid I played soccer and I played baseball. After a couple years, my asthma got worse and worse, so I had to stop playing. Every five minutes I'd have to stop and use my inhaler. That was one of my biggest things -- finishing this whole mile of swimming. With my asthma, I couldn't breathe. That kind of scared me. But I took away that even though I have asthma, I may have a spell, it doesn't prevent me from doing what I want to do or what I need to do. I just need to fight through it. Give myself a break, calm down, and just get back into it.''

Coverboy: Brian

That's the sort of spirit that today has Brian working those two jobs, working toward a bachelor's in business administration, and generally diving into life. It may have also given him the confidence to be a Coverboy, which he says was a great way to really introduce himself to metro D.C. after moving to Alexandria to live with his boyfriend, Matt. It also pushed him to campaign hard when it came time for the Coverboy of the Year contest.
''Probably every day, two to three times a day, I'd post the contest link on my Facebook wall, ask people to vote for me,'' he says. ''I had a ton of friends sharing it every day. And I shared it on Twitter. I had a good support system.''
That support system likely comes from the sort of friend Brian is. Asked how his friends might describe him, the answer comes easily: ''Humble. A very caring person. Genuine.''
''Everyone -- even after just five minutes of talking to me -- sees me as just a down-to-earth guy,'' says Brian. ''I get along with everybody.''

UPDATED: DC Eagle Closing in Current Location: Longtime leather/Levi bar to go dark temporarily as relocation effort continues

News:
After nearly 26 years at its current location, The DC Eagle, D.C.'s main bar catering to the leather/Levi crowd, will close its doors. According to co-owner Ted Clements, the bar will cease to operate at 639 New York Ave. NW on Sunday, Dec. 29.
[UPDATE, Monday, Dec. 16, 1:57 p.m.: Peter Lloyd, a DC Eagle co-owner, reports that the venue's landlord, Douglas Development Corp., today granted an extension of the lease through Jan. 31. While the DC Eagle may not remain open through the entirety of that extension, Lloyd confirms that the bar will be open during the Mid-Atlantic Leather Weekend, Jan. 17 to 20.]
Now in its third reincarnation since first opening in 1971 on 9th Street NW, the DC Eagle will move again to a place in the District, says Clements. But although there is a particular address in mind for the Eagle's fourth roost -- made known to a small group of people at the Eagle's 42nd anniversary party -- Clements is hesitant to share it, preferring to consult with affected Advisory Neighborhood Commissions before going fully public.

DC Eagle

"We submitted our ABRA license application," Clements confirms. "But I haven't signed anything. We still don't own it."
The move means the DC Eagle won't be open for a period including the Centaur Motorcycle Club's upcoming Mid-Atlantic Leather Weekend (MAL), Jan. 17 to 20. But Clements hopes to be fully operational in the new space by August. And that new space, larger than current venue, may also offer a restaurant, a separate smoking bar, and a dance floor.
Clements is also trying to get an entertainment endorsement that would allow the bar to play host to musical guests, pageants, and similar events, as well as a patio with outdoor seating.
In the meantime, the Eagle will hold "pop-up parties" in different locations throughout the city, including one during MAL. During the downtime, several leather/Levi clubs and Eagle-based events will need to find alternate venues.
One such event, Otter Crossing, held monthly on the first Friday, hosted its final party in the current venue Dec. 6. David Brown, Otter Crossing organizer, says his party will move to the Green Lantern, near Thomas Circle. He stresses, however, that he hopes to maintain a relationship with the DC Eagle for other events in the future.
"The crowd at Otter Crossing is very fluid," says Brown. "Some of it is people coming from Bear Happy Hour, some are coming from elsewhere. But the Green Lantern has a little bit of the same feel as at the Eagle. It also has longstanding ties to the community, and a history of serving a broad range of clientele, so it's really the perfect place to hold it."
Todd White, president of Centaur MC, says many of the motorcycle clubs like the Centaurs who make the DC Eagle their "home bar" will likely frequent the Green Lantern, considered the backup leather/Levi bar by many of club members. He also foresees the Centaurs and others holding "bar invasions" -- visiting a gay venue en masse that is usually not associated with the leather community, dressed in full gear -- which he says may raise the clubs' profiles and help with recruiting.
"You pick a bar you wouldn't normally go to," White explains. "Sometimes you don't fit the dress code and stand out. But that's the point: to be seen, to show that [the leather clubs are] a facet of the LGBT community as well."
"It's sort of an exciting time, because it's going to force the leather community to branch out," White continues. "When our club goes out to a venue, we can educate people and show them leather's not 'scary.'"
White says the transition may also prompt less orchestrated outings, with leather enthusiasts also having a greater presence at "bear" events, for instance.
"The unique thing that separates D.C. from other cities is that the leather and bear communities already often interact with each other," says White, noting that the Centaurs are also trying to plan something in conjunction with Town Danceboutique's Friday Bear Happy Hours.
"The point is we're going to find something to do," White promises. "We're not going to hibernate. ...more

What queen doesn't want get backstage at Radio City Music Hall??During the Radio City Stage Door Tour, guests go behind the scenes of
New York City?s iconic Radio City Music Hall to learn about its history,
exquisite Art Deco architecture and the secrets of the ?Great Stage.?
Plus, visitors can take advantage of a fun photo opportunity to
high-kick in step with a Radio City Rockette.

A friendly, knowledgeable tour guide welcomes visitors into the
venue?s art deco lobby adorned with enormous jeweled chandeliers, golden
doors and a majestic staircase. The tour takes guests back to 1932 when
Radio City, the first building in the Rockefeller Center complex,
opened as the world?s largest indoor theater (at the time) and daily
presented the Rockettes and other live acts in between movies. Guests
hear fascinating stories about the building?s stunning murals, nude
aluminum statues (that were once taboo) as well as the intriguing
justification for how the ladies? and gentlemen?s bathrooms and lounges
were decorated.

Inside the theater, visitors view the massive stage that stretches
an entire city block (from 50th to 51st Streets) and learn how it gets
raised and lowered by its original hydraulic system. On the top floor,
guests view a short film inside the former private apartment of Radio
City Music Hall?s innovator and theatrical impresario, the late S.L.
?Roxy? Rothafel. Framed posters of famed Radio City acts line the
corridors, including Prince, Elton John, Justin Timberlake and Bette
Midler, who broke a Radio City record in 1993 by selling out 30 shows.

Miss Coco Peru PRAYS THE PREACHER Away

A Catholic high School has postponed a talk by a controversial priest
who encourages teens to ?pray away the gay? ? but the president of the
Bronx school defied angry gay groups by saying the lecturer will be
invited back.

Father Donald Timone was scheduled to speak Tuesday night at Cardinal
Spellman High School about the Catholic group called Courage ? which
encourages teens "struggling with same-sex attraction" to lead chaste
lives.

After outrage by lesbian and gay alumni, and some staffers, school
President Trevor Nicholls scrubbed the event ? but this battle is not
over.
Miss
Coco Peru, the alter ego of Clinton Leupp, took to social media to rally
fellow graduates of Cardinal Spellman when she heard that a retired
priest affiliated with Courage, a Catholic group that encourages teens
who suffer from "same sex attraction" to stay away from sex, was
scheduled to speak at the school. The meeting has been canceled.

?It?s hard enough being a teenager,? said Spellman grad Clinton Leupp.
?I look back at all of the suffering I did. All of the bullying. And
something like this just fosters that environment.?

Leupp, better known by his drag persona Miss Coco Peru, used social
media to draw attention to the Timone lecture, causing its cancellation,
however temporary.Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/bronx/catholic-school-cancels-anti-gay-talk-article-1.1521968#ixzz2lfhXmr7L

Moving to Austin. What next?

My partner and I plan to move to Austin, Texas, in January. We?re looking for recommendations about neighborhoods, information about the housing market, or any other useful information. Traits of our ideal area, in no particular order:
* Bicycle friendly.
* Close to transit lines.
* Funky and weird.
* Inexpensive.
* In the city limits.
* Mix of people, such as different ages.
* Relatively cohesive neighborhood.
* Relatively quiet (I am hypersensitive with sounds).
* Has stuff within walking distance ? for instance, grocery store, pool, park, library and restaurants within about a mile.

About us:
Early 50s women. No kids. Three cats and a dog. We have a variety of interests, but not spectator sports. Two cars, but we?d like to use them less. No jobs lined up yet. I might work in journalism or government, but am also interested in coworking.

About housing:
Looking for two or three bedrooms at a moderate price. Expect to live there the rest of our lives. Plan to buy a home but might rent for about six months first. Open to different types of housing (such as condos, townhouses, mobile homes, cohousing) but probably not apartments.
We live in a small town in a house with 1,700 square feet. It has three bedrooms and 1.75 baths. The house was bought for $140K six or seven years ago. Last year, it was appraised at $180K. We hope to sell it for $160K to $175K.

Our questions:
* Are there any areas you recommend?
* Are there any areas we should avoid?
* How does the housing market compare?
* Where is the ?gay ghetto??
* Are there any neighborhood newspapers?
* Is there anything else we should know?

Laugh with Me and Dana Goldberg

I'm looking forward to seeing my pal Dana Goldberg this weekend. She's been busy touring the country as an out lesbian comedian and raising money for some great LGBT causes. Dana is on tour with her solo show Crossing the Line and she's performing with comedians Jason Dudey and Ian Harvie as part of the Come Out Laughing tour. If you're in the Pacific Northwest you can catch Dana this Friday, November 22nd in Portland, OR, or Saturday November 23rd in Seattle, WA. She'll have more dates in 2014, both solo and with the guys. Whether you can come see her live or not, be sure to check out my interview with Dana Goldberg and find out why so many people think she's the funniest comedian in the US.

Real Estate News

Lorie Zapf follow up
Last Friday, our community got some good news from the San Diego Association of Realtors (SDAR) which decided to suspend its endorsement of Lorie Zapf for City Council. Zapf failed to disclose a number of crippling personal details including her open gay-hatred and her operation of a short sale scam with husband Eric. Zapf is now forced to remove the Realtor thumbs-up from all campaign material and won’t have access to the organization’s PAC funds. Thanks to all who took a moment to contact SDAR, both as Realtors and as clients. Your direct involvement helped immensely. Professional credit is owed to SD City Beat’s Dave Maass and Realtor Pat Flannery from blogofsandiego.com.

Before we uncork the Prosecco in victory, let me offer a more dir…

Pretty Airplanes

Jes from Dayton Ohio recently contacted me to tell me about an art project she completed. She was invited by the city to cover this model F16 jet with art. Since she is a mosaic artist, this is what she came up with. Jess said:I covered the Jet with stained glass because glass is the most beautiful media in the world ;)I wanted to show a larger range of color and knew that a rainbow would be perfect. The plane is meant to be beautiful more than anything else. I wanted people to want to know what she is all about. A beautiful sculpture that says I'm proud to be gay and in the military. I hope this Rainbow F16 serves as a reminder that we need to defeat the BAN on gay men and women serving our country. Equality is beautiful.Jes's plane will be on display in a bank in Dayton, Ohio. Thanks for sharing Jes!
