Love is Love

I've seen a lot of ads for marriage equality, but for some reason this one got to me. It's from Basic Rights Oregon, our state-wide gay rights organization. They're raising money to put gay marriage up for a vote in Oregon, probably in 2012, to overturn anti-gay amendment. But first they're running campaigns like this one on cable TV stations. If all works out as we plan, Oregon could be the first state to legalize gay marriage by a popular vote.

Clay Aiken for....President?

Can a profile on Manhunt stop Clay Aiken from running for Congress?!
We will soon see!
Former ?American Idol? finalist Clay Aiken, who lost the singing
competition's second season to Ruben Studdard in 2003, is ?actively
considering? a run for North Carolina?s 2nd congressional district in
the U.S. House, according to the Washington Blade.
Sources told the Blade the openly gay singer has been making phone
calls to gauge potential support as he works with Betsy Conti, a local
political strategist who has worked with Al Gore and former North
Carolina Gov. Bev Purdue.
It?s unclear when Aiken may announce his decision to run for the House seat, currently filled by Rep. Renee Ellmers, R-N.C.

Hello Faithful Friends

Hey, remember when Dipstick and I used to post stuff here? For those of you who haven't given up on us, THANK YOU!Have you ever felt caught up in a vortex, where things are spinning so fast around you that you actually see colors and bright shiny things in the clouds (no hallucinogenics involved)? That is how I've been feeling and it's been hard to hold onto the reigns. Beyond basking in glee and drinking packets of EmergenC, that also means any free time I've had has been dedicated to sleep, so sincere apologies for being MIA.Anyhoodle, for now, I'll fill you in on all things Lipstick since I last wrote.A little over a week ago, we shot our first short film Til Death To Us Toby. For Patty (who was an awesome Assistant Director) and I, it was a 22 hour day. We got up at 3:45am, crew call was at 5:45 and we were rolling by 6:30. We shot until 11:11pm non-stop, save 15 minutes for lunch and 15 minutes for dinner. I thought it was killer that I said "that's a wrap" at 11:11 (I'm superstitious that way). We partied with the cast + crew until nearly 1am. The cast and crew were beyond AMAZING! Seriously, what a stellar team we had, who never complained or ran out of energy. Can't wait for the big wrap party! If you're out of the loop, you can follow the thread the Hot Pink Shorts HERE.It's been an amazing journey with OUTtv and this Hot Pink Shorts program. I'm gushing with gratitude and spinning at the sight of exciting things on the horizon, finally truly within grasp. I told the folks at OUTtv that I felt like a caterpillar who'd transformed into butterfly throughout this process. Week One, I was a furry little larvae and slowly, as we ate all the mentors had to offer, and set out on our own journey into the sticks and leaves, my wings actually began to take shape and I could eventually lift off the ground. And now, well, there's no stopping me as I fly around this wonderful world of opportunity.More to come soon, for sure, as there are some really cool things simmering on the TV front.**Small caveat for you Portland peeps: in the upcoming month, we'll be filming a little music video for the original song Christine Havrilla and I are co-writing for Toby. It's called Hightail and it's addictive. Think Jack Black meets Melissa Etheridge. For the video, which will also be part of the credits for the film, we'll need people to come out and help us, so stay tuned. We'll need as many people as we can get for the shoot, which is slated to happen at Laurelhurst Park.Enjoy the little slideshow below of our shoot, both of the action and behind the scenes. Cate Cameron captured these amazing moments. Be sure to check her out online. She rocks!*photos by Cate Cameron

Run don’t walk…

Like most things that weigh heavily in our community and lives, from our civil rights and freedoms to our many other struggles, HIV has been at the forefront. HIV infection and reduction and making those who are HIV positive or living with AIDS more comfortable and fulfilled has been a huge priority for all of us. For those of us who have lost someone to this disease it is much more personal and AIDS Walk and other related events are a way to remember and show our commitment to those we loved. For others who know someone who is living with HIV or AIDS it is an opportunity to do something about it and show love and support for our brothers and sisters. For everyone it is a way to show support, tolerance and compassion.

Even Hipsters Label Themselves

Y?all know I usually only write when I have some type of inspiration.  Today is no different. I?ve been thinking about labels and conversations around them.  Oddly, I?ve had two such conversations about labels this week. One friend was telling me about being labeled by someone she was close to.  She didn?t agree with the label but declined to argue her point in order to maintain a positive relationship with the person who labeled her.   Another friend refused to accept a label.   You and I would call a man who works at a fire station, wears a big helmet and yellow rubber jacket and slides down a pole during an emergency to put out fires ? we would call him a ?firefighter.?  There is no ambiguity in what he does. That is how clearly this person could be labeled.  But she won?t take her ?fireman? label because she ?doesn?t like labels.?   However, she does label herself in other ways.  It?s just this particular label that she may be struggling with. When I came out of the closet, I had no idea of the variety of lesbians that there were.  Butch, soft butch, boi, lipstick, Chapstick, granola, femme, high-femme? they are all labels that can be used to describe the type of lesbian you are.   Only none of them fit me. So I created my own label: rocker chick. Yeah, it?s not an exclusive-to-lesbians term.  And I don?t give a fuck.  It?s what I am.  I will write that shit on a name tag and wear it with pride. I know it?s all hipster right now to shun labels because you should see yourself as unique and one-of-a-kind.  But honestly, they are not your enemy. As a professional organizer, I love labels.   They help people know what?s inside the box.  Labels help people sort shit out in a way that makes sense to them.   I can write ?Toys? on a box of rubber bands because that?s what they are to me.  But you might write ?office supplies? or ?fasteners? on the box.  It doesn?t really matter what you call them.  They are still rubber bands. When someone wants to label you, it?s just a tool that they use to help them sort out in their own mind what you are.  It doesn?t change what you are.  It doesn?t cling to you, penetrate you or make you become something you aren?t.  It?s just a way that someone else is trying to order your place in their head.I think the first and only poem my mom ever taught me was this childhood gem: "Sticks and stones may break my bonesBut words will never harm me." While not exactly the same thing, the principle is the same: they are just words.Don?t be offended when someone puts a label on you.  Just be glad they have you on their mind.

What are the ways we could expand services and support available to LGBT young people online?

What are the ways we could expand services and support available to LGBT young people online? I have to convince a panel that I'm the person to increase the online reach of a UK-based LGBT youth charity, giving young people greater access to advice, support and opportunities. We want to reach more LGBT young people, particularly those living outside of cities, and to better use the varying resources of the online world to support those that we reach.

I'm already planning to talk about Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, phone, forums & email contact (plus producing videos & podcasts) - though if you have anything specific to offer in how to use these services in this context your help would be welcomed.

I'm more interested in what I'm missing. What novel ways might such an organisation reach out to young people online? Are there social networks/websites I'm not aware of that we might usefully expand into? How could we best use them? Am I thinking too narrowly?

I'm especially interested to hear from anyone who is LGBT who has insight into the kind of online presence and services they would like to see, or would have liked to have been available in their youth. What was missing for you that we could provide for LGBT young people now?

I appreciate this is a pretty open question, but any thoughts, suggestions or advice you can provide would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

Glitter in the Air (and in my bed...)

I started seeing someone.  I didn't want to. I've been trying to avoid it at all costs.  The last thing I need in my life right now is another (anything) to drain from my time, energy or attention.I have had to make major adjustments to my schedule and my time is sparse and limited.  The thought of trying to build a foundation with someone new scares the shit out of me.   How This All Began"I'll wait until I graduate in August before I think about seeing anyone," I told myself. However, an old friend started to send me articles about cancer and healing for my dad and we began to talk more.  Recently, we started hanging out and then, it went there.I've known her for years so I don't have to build anything foundational.  I also don't feel compelled to spend a lot of time with her talking and texting.  She is in a similar busy situation so we don't really see each other often. I don't feel guilty when I can't talk, text or go out.  There is no pressure.   When we are together, it feels really good to be in the company of someone that I genuinely enjoy being around.  It may not go anywhere or it may go somewhere. I don't know and I really don't care right now. I just want to enjoy her company when it works for both of us for as long as it lasts.  It may be for a week or a month or just until Robin Meade meets me and suddenly realizes that she's gay.   One thing I can say for sure is that things are starting to be different at my house.Example 1: The Smell TestAfter the new girl spent the night here and then left to go home, Lindsey came home from work and announced loudly, "It smells like a girl in here!" I said, "Well, good. I'm a girl. (Kinda.)"  She shook her head and said, "No, Mom. It smells like a real girl! Like a product that would have words like 'mango vanilla kiss' on the bottle."Example 2: Lesbian Shower - Before and AfterThis is my shower when it was only being used by me:Masculine.  Green.  Simple.Yesterday, when I came home from visiting my parents, I glanced over in my bathroom and noticed a new look to the second tier of my shower and saw some decidedly unfamiliar and very pink things being left in there: Initially, she just left a bottle of shampoo and a can of hair spray.  Then, a pink and purple toothbrush made it's way into my toothbrush holder.  Now, it's a full-blown explosion of pink products and clothing.  It's nice to see her things around and know that she's planning to come back spend more time here.  That's why she wants her stuff here.  I like that shit. It means that I will get to enjoy her company, her kisses, and back scratches from the hottest, sexiest looking fingernails I've ever seen.  Example 3: Glitter in my BedRecently, I was changing my sheets and there was glitter in my bed.  It could have come from her hairspray, facial moisturizer, toenail polish or clothing - because she has glitter in all of those things. Her feminine energy is OFF THE CHARTS and something I'm not used to at all.  But after being around her for a while now, I notice more and more how much she is totally intuitive about where my head is and what my needs are and I don't have to ask for anything.  With her femininity comes a woman's intuition that has been spot-on.In fact, she gives me things that I didn't even know I needed. This is not what I wanted and not what I expected but this is what I have right now.  She snuck in my back door and unpacked her pink, glittery shit.  I don't know how long she will stay but for right now, I'm not complaining.

Greetings everyone, hope your week is going well. What a week in our busy world! The Senate did not pass DADT. The Republicans decided to start running on platforms which the Democrats created and former President Bill Clinton had some great words of advice for President Obama. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction!

This week my guests were 4 lovely lesbians, Christina our Editor, her partner Alice and their friends Joergie and Neally.

We selected ZIO’S Italian Restaurant on El Cajon Blvd in North Park. When I arrived, owner Darren James greeted me with his warm embrace and handshake. We have chatted several times on Facebook and this was our actual first time meeting in person.

My ladies had not yet arrived so I asked Darren to give me a tour of…

Letters to the Editor

Letter to the editor:

Last night I attended the Hillcrest Town Council to listen to Todd Gloria, Carl DeMaio, debate Prop D. This was supposed to be an informational forum. Carl DeMaio, it appears, does not understand the word “decorum” as he continuously and viciously attached Todd Gloria, along unions and with the labor movement in general. DeMaio came across as a nasty bully. Probably a carry over from his childhood. Mr. DeMaio was a guest in Todd Gloria’s district but proceeded in his usually manner - that of an attach dog DeMaio periodally rolled his eyes or made faces behind Councilman Gloria’s back while the councilman spoke on the subject. DeMaio was plan rude and owes Councilman an apology.

The agency erroneously denied her benefits after it determined that she was "legally male" at the time of their marriage despite all the legal documents to the contrary.

Interview with Rose Rowe and Renee Olbert of Seeking Simone

Seeking Simone is a web series that follows Simone Selkin's bumbling attempts to date her way through Toronto, and the first episode of the second season recently premiered. Judging from the sheer insanity in her encounters with Toronto's finest ladies, I'm concerned about New York City's proximity to Toronto. I wonder if winds from the northwest could blow the cuckoo into the Big Apple like winds blew volcanic ash all over Europe from the Icelandic volcano last year.

I went to visit my dad today.  He has been so sweet and encouraging to me.  The man has his DOCTORATE OF LAW.  He is so brilliant and I felt truly blessed to spend the day with him.  He has been doing chemo this past week and he is tired but still positive and such a great sense of humor! We decided my goal is to finish this shit by the end of the summer so dad can see me graduate.  He's going to take great care of himself and keep on his good path and I am going to shred through my classes like a badass. This is going to require me to take 2 classes this summer when my financial aid is not available.  So earning an extra $2k by the end of April is now imperative.  God, I love a challenge!  #THISGIRLWILLBEWORKINGHERASSOFFAlso of note: my sweet little baby girl, Lindsey, is going to take a class with me.  We've been at SPSU for almost 2 years together and are the same major but have never taken a class together.  Well, look out Grammar!  This should be fun.  (Except that I am not allowed to tell anyone that we are related.  But she did say I could sit next to her in the likely event that I will need to cheat on a test.  So there's that...)And I saw this today and could not agree more: I also completely agree with this:(I imagine she has the sweetest southern accent...)So everyone have a great week and send me your thoughts, prayers and good vibes.  I am going to need them!

Mixed Messages: Even as it gets better for gay couples in Virginia, it pays to remember that change still comes slowly

Opinion: Leave it to Virginia to throw a wrench in my wedding plans. This was to be the year that my husband, Cavin, and I took the final step of legalizing it — getting an official license that will be recognized by the federal government and provide us with some much-needed security on issues that our legally married friends have stopped stressing over. This can be confusing as we use the word ''husband'' when referring to each other. We got married in 2007, Virginia having then recently enacted a statue that constitutionally refused to recognize big, gay, Buddhist wedding ceremonies. When D.C. offered official knot-tying services, we held off because for the most part in Virginia — or Kentucky, when traveling home for the holidays — a legal marriage would be as invisible as our real marriage. But with Windsor pressing the issue and federal retirement benefits on the line, 2014 was the time for us to make honest men of each other by making the short trek to the D.C. courthouse. ... (more)

How have gay men interacted with and regarded lesbians, and vice versa

Would like insight and education into the various ways that gay men -- both as individuals and as a group, both historically and currently -- relate to, regard, and interact with gay/lesbian women, and vice versa. [I've tried to be thoughtful in my wording, but I've not had all that many occasions in my life to discuss LGBT topics. So I'm nervous that I might misspeak or expose my ignorance. If I do please correct me and accept my sincere apologies.]

Looking for in-depth readings and histories and seminal texts that would give a good overview of these group dynamics. I'm most interested in learning about the U.S. in the 20th/21st century, but if there are pieces that also address this dynamic in other cultures or other times, then all the better.

My (uninformed and simplistic, and possibly irresponsible) perceptions -- and here is where I'm afraid of sounding like an ass -- are that while the two groups have had every reason to form a coalition in the ongoing struggle for their safety and their civil rights, it doesn't seem to me that there is all that much overlap in their various subcultures' interests or arts or patterns of consumption or recreation -- it just doesn't seem like they have that much in common outside of their shared struggle.

Looking, also, for feminist critics' assessment of any patriarchal systems at work within the gay/lesbian cultures.

I know that there will no doubt have been a spectrum of opinions and a healthy, ongoing internal debate; I'm not afraid of readings that address or embrace this complexity.

Are there seminal works addressing this relationship? Great essays? Contentious works of art or fiction? Watershed academic studies? I'm very willing to read long-format or challenging pieces.

Many thanks... and again, please, please correct me if I've said anything ignorant; I'd consider it a huge kindness to me if you would.

Magic Act: Jose Carrasquillo returns to GALA with a picturesque puzzle

Stage:
''I don't do realism well, but I do magic realism very well,'' theater director Jose Carrasquillo says, by way of touting his latest show, The Girl from Tacna, now at GALA Theatre. ''It's really worth seeing because of that: Whether you like this play or not, visually it's very impressive.''
The play, written by Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa, is a somewhat surreal, time-shifting exploration into one Peruvian family's rich history. ''It's a memory play,'' Carrasquillo says, ''and the way it's written, it really summons up a lot of stunning images that you have to do onstage.'' The play focuses on a writer's work in telling his family's story over several generations. ''As memories come to him, they three-dimensionalize onstage,'' he explains.

La Señorita de Tacna at GALA

Performed at GALA in Spanish, with English surtitles, the play is in a largely unstructured style, featuring no discrete scenes and an intentionally blurry sense of time and place. It sounds confusing, even overambitious, and it was -- on paper.
''I read it a dozen times [and] I still wasn't certain what the play was about,'' Carrasquillo concedes, noting that it took him nearly three weeks to solve its storytelling puzzle as well as the theatrical challenge in presenting it. ''It's really cohesive,'' he says about the staged result. ''It's not like it's choppy or anything. It just comes together and people get it.''
Carrasquillo, who also runs a guesthouse with his partner in his native Puerto Rico, is currently focused on helping produce a major, month-long, national Latino theater festival launching this fall in Los Angeles. Over the past couple decades Carrasquillo has directed for most of D.C.'s major theater companies, from the Kennedy Center to Signature Theatre to Woolly Mammoth.
But The Young Lady from Tacna is his first show in a while. ''I actually took a little sabbatical for two years,'' he says, a time to recharge, read and travel, checking off things on his bucket list, including hiking Machu Picchu and going to Spain. '
The Girl from Tacna runs to March 9 at GALA Theatre at Tivoli Square, 3333 14th St. NW. Tickets are $38 to $42. Performed in Spanish with English surtitles. Call 202-234-7174 or visit galatheatre.org ...more

Montana GOP policy: Make homosexuality illegal

HELENA, Mont. (AP) – At a time when gays have been gaining victories across the country, the Republican Party in Montana still wants to make homosexuality illegal.

The party adopted an official platform in June that keeps a long-held position in support of making homosexual acts illegal, a policy adopted after the Montana Supreme Court struck down such laws in 1997.

The fact that it’s still the official party policy more than 12 years later, despite a tidal shift in public attitudes since then and the party’s own pledge of support for individual freedoms, has exasperated some GOP members.

“I looked at that and said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’” state Sen. John Brueggeman, R-Polson, said last week. “…

Judge orders lesbian reinstated to Air Force

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) – A federal judge ruled Friday that a decorated flight nurse discharged from the Air Force for being gay should be given her job back as soon as possible in the latest legal setback to the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

The decision by U.S. District Judge Ronald Leighton came in a closely watched case as a tense debate has been playing out over the policy. Senate Republicans blocked an effort to lift the ban this week, but Leighton is now the second federal judge this month to deem the policy unconstitutional.

Maj. Margaret Witt was suspended in 2004 and subsequently discharged under the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy after the Air Force learned she had been in a lon…

The spark that ignited the flame…that led future GLBT generations out of the dark

What a list we have this year for the fifth anniversary of GLBT History Month. It would be impossible to cover all of those who have done so much for our community as every day we make history through our actions, even the smallest and simplest ones. Those who are honored this year are some of the more high profile GLBT’s that have, either in the past or present, found the strength, courage and will to help drive our rights forward. Each and every one of them should be honored and are worthy of our attention.

But without taking away from those we are honoring where is the sixteen year old who came out against all the odds and made something of himself giving back to his community at the same time? Is he not part of our history, or does he not count a…

San Diego lesbians rock!

There was a time in San Diego’s rich history when lesbians were not as visible or held in the same esteem in the GLBT community as they are now. At times discounted and thought to be too small a group to warrant advertising dollars, they were also considered too different from gay men to be influential or to hold any positions of power. This was also a time when there was little or no nightlife catering for lesbians and the few lesbian clubs out there had come and gone. They simply could not compete with the gay bars and the numbers that they attracted. Going beyond nightlife there were few resources for lesbians or places that lesbians could gather, socialize, have fun and be in the majority.

Fast forward and it is apparent that this has really chang…

Lesbian overthinks her gender expression. News at 11.

I'm a 22-year-old lesbian. I have never made any effort to look hot, but suddenly I want to, and it's raising some serious identity issues for me. Hygiene/beauty-wise, all I do is shower daily, brush my teeth, comb my hair (though it tends to go every which-way), and wear deodorant, clean clothes (some men's, some women's), and moisturizer (for the SPF). I don't own any makeup and I don't know how to apply it. Basically, I look like I don't give a fuck.

Here's the thing, though?I do give a fuck, and I think my apparent apathy's a holdover from a time when I truly wasn't comfortable with myself. As a closeted teen/pre-teen, I wore dingy sweats everyday and kept a copy of The Beauty Myth in my junior high school locker. (I'm sure NO ONE ever suspected.) I defined myself in opposition to other girls because I felt like I could never truly be one of them anyway and was too proud to try. I also did it to distance myself from them so I didn't have to deal with my attraction. On a less psychosexual level, I felt like if I tried to look pretty, people would see right through it and laugh at me.

I had a boyfriend in high school and a couple more in college, along with some random male hookups (I came out "bisexual" at 18). Almost every single first makeout session would include a moment where the guy would look at me real close and then quizzically remark, "You know, you're really pretty," like he'd never noticed before and was pleasantly surprised. Secretly, I loved hearing that?in my mind, it indicated that I wasn't naturally uglier than other girls, but merely had less superficial values. (Ugh.)

Now I've graduated college and am finally out as gay, not bi. My frumpiness is no longer really a source of political pride for me anymore, because I've internalized patriarchal beauty standards enough to only be attracted to women who mostly fit them (yeah, stone me). I'm not trying to imply that a butch or androgynous woman who likes feminine women is necessarily a hypocrite; just that my former feminister-than-thou attitude about not meeting those standards no longer makes sense. Also, it's not like I'm some Jackie Warner/Kate Moennig type?I just look like a troll.

I don't know what sort of gender presentation I'd have if I didn't go through such a long phase of self-loathing, but I suspect that the answer is still not "Barbie". The last time I really dressed up girly was a couple years ago and I felt like I was in drag, but hey, I don't feel terribly comfortable with the way I look now either. Ultimately, I'd like to look like a cute urban 20-something queer girl that other cute urban 20-something queer girls could see themselves dating, instead of an overgrown 3rd grader with blotchy skin and gigantic boobs.

I suppose I know, in broad strokes, how to go about changing my image: learn how to tame my hair, get some makeup and try to even my skin tone a little on nights that I go out, buy trendy-looking clothes I normally wouldn't look at twice, get less-dorky glasses the next time I need a new prescription. If you have any practical advice on those matters, it's more than welcome. (I'm 5'5", 140 lbs, white, and would look ridiculous with hair any shorter than chin-length.) But I guess my real question is, though, how do I not feel so ridiculous trying? I spent my entire adolescence acting either aggressively opposed to this sort of stuff or innocently too "deep" for it. It's a big part of who I was, which is probably why it feels like such a big deal changing it. I don't have any real reason to believe I won't just feel like a potential poser again. Also, I feel like most other people have settled into their style by this age even if do they switch things up here and there, so this sort of deliberate change feels kind of life-stage inappropriate.

As for what I can afford... I make $35,000 a year, my rent's $650/month, and I'm not in any debt. Obviously cheaper is better, but I'm willing to throw a little bit of money at this problem.

(Also, yes, I know that confidence is my biggest issue and that that's not primarily a matter of looks, but I wanted this question to be targeted.)

My brother's wife just came out

How do I support my brother, his wife, and myself through my sister-in-law coming out as a lesbian? My younger brother married his current wife last June (just just past their one-year anniversary). Since their marriage, he and his wife have lived with me (I'm single). We all got along for the most part and it was mostly financially beneficial for all of us. Since about Christmas though the house has been extremely tense and about 2 months ago my sister-in-law and my brother sat me down and shared that she is a lesbian and wants to come out now (not really a surprise). I felt hurt and angry that I was expected to keep this secret until she was ready to share this with our family, and over the course of the last month, my family and her family have all been told. Everyone, including me, is very supportive for the most part.
I'm struggling at this point with how best to support my brother, his wife, and myself. They will be separating but want to continue living here. They want to tell a sports league we're all involved with this week what they're going through but I feel like this is unnecessary. Why share this with acquaintences? Close friends I understand but not an entire league. I'm not sure why I'm having more trouble now that I know for sure a separation is happening (at one point they discussed an open marriage). I do feel like for a long time I was expected to carry this for them/keep secrets/act like everything is normal, and now my feelings aren't being considered. Any advice? Anyone gone through anything similar?

Playing my part in making life for fellow LGBT countryfolk bearable.

The State-sanctioned homophobia and transphobia in Malaysia, my country of origin, is breaking my heart. What can I do as a currently overseas citizen to make things better for my fellow LGBT folk back in Malaysia, particularly in raising awareness of the issue internationally? I left Malaysia for various reasons, but one core reason was escaping the various persecutions and micro/macro-aggressions I felt for who I am. Most of this has to do with race (my parents are Bangladeshi migrants) and citizenship/residency, but I also felt that I wouldn't be safe exploring my sexuality in a country that so deeply vilifies sexuality that "sexy" is a slur and politicians get run out of Parliament for what they wear (or don't) in their sleep. It took me until I had been in Australia for a few years that I felt safe and able to explore my sexuality and gender without having to look behind my back to see if I will get screwed over by the Malaysian Government. I have had friends and acquaintances who cannot go back to Malaysia because they will face persecution, and one person whose Government scholarship was revoked and who was forced to come back home because her ex outed her as a trans woman.

I am trying to get the word out about the situation in Malaysia, especially this ridiculous propaganda musical, but I am facing a few roadblocks:

1. I am overseas and am not likely to return to Malaysia anytime soon, so my ability to organise something back home is limited. If I did try to do something in Malaysia, I'd be dismissed as a "foreign Zionist agent" of some fashion.

2. Incorporated into the musical is a plot point about how LGBT people who protest are being paid a handsome sum by the Opposition party and are merely reacting against the advice of "reasonable Malay Muslims". This makes any show of protest difficult to be taken seriously - especially when the main sexuality rights event in the country gets shut down for "threatening to disrupt public order" - pretty much the main excuse for arresting any protestor ever.

3. I am trying to get the word out in the Bay Area (where I live right now), especially with the Queer People of Color circles I am heavily involved with. Not many people have really picked up on this though - most people get stuck on "a musical about anti-gay sentiment! ISN'T THAT IRONIC" and don't move on from there. Also it seems that Malaysia doesn't quite have the White/Western Savior Cred of places like Uganda or India, where people seem to care more about LGBT issues there.

4. Even when there are people that DO care, I'm at a loss for what they could do. Petitions are pointless, because the Malaysian Government isn't going to pay attention (the whole paid-by-the-Opposition thing). International attention would be handy, but then it becomes "Foreign Zionist Agents". Tying this in to the United Nations may be useful, but I'm sure there will be a stack of countries who will take Malaysia's side.

5. People often bring up voting, but Malaysia has arcane voting laws that make it near impossible for overseas residents to vote. I technically am allowed to vote overseas because I'm an international student (one of the few classes of overseas residents allowed to vote), but I have to register in Malaysia first - not overseas. Gah! (Besides, it's not like there is anyone to vote for in my district that isn't Ruling Party, and there's a lot of electoral fraud.)

I want Malaysians to see that the so-called deviants are people like everyone else, diverse and unique and part of their community, and not a danger or scrounge to society. My current idea is to organise a performance of monologues, ala Yoni ki Baat (semi self link) or The Vagina Monologues, about Malaysians dealing with the stigmatization of sexuality. Not just in terms of being LGBT, but also slut-shaming, ageism against young people, and misogyny - one does not have to do much to be branded a sexual deviant in Malaysia. I have been and am currently involved in these sorts of This requires being back in Malaysia for a substantial amount of time, which I am not able to do right now. I'm also reminded of how the Vagina Monologues are banned in Malaysia and how anything of this nature would have to be underground...which then leads to the issue of preaching to the choir, the people who already know that LGBT people are not evil...rather than the people who will be affected by this propaganda. Something along the lines of the Pussy Riot worldwide protests would be awesome, but I'm not sure how to get people to care.

Any ideas of what I can do to get international support? I'm reaching out super slowly, one person at a time, but I really don't want Malaysia to get away with it and continue being an unsafe hostile space for people like me.

Spotlight: Queenie Pie

Legendary composer, pianist and band leader Duke Ellington died in 1974 before he completed his jazz-opera hybrid Queenie Pie. Yet that hasn't stopped the work from being performed in reconstructed versions with other Ellington music attached. Chicago Opera Theater is the latest company to present Queenie Pie in a shared production with Long Beach Opera. Queenie Pie is a 1930s piece about a beauty rivalry between two women that tackles issues of prejudice and class divisions within the African-American community. Queenie Pie is performed four times between Feb. 15 and March 2 at Millennium Park's Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E. Randolph. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15, 23 and March 5, with a 3 p.m. Sunday matinee Feb. 23. Tickets are $45-$125; call 312-334-7777 or visit www.chicagooperatheater.org. Real Estate News

San Diego needs its own Housing Hero
Big Bad Banking got some really BAD NEWS last week as Mother Jones Magazine’s Andy Kroll broke the story of huge law firms, known as “foreclosure mills”, operating in Florida (and elsewhere) engaged in the potentially illegal taking of millions of homes.

GMAC -a subsidiary of Ally Financial was so worried it suspended foreclosure evictions and sales altogether. Rising Democratic Party star Rep. Alan Grayson along with his Ohio colleague Marcy Kaptur have been among the few voices in Congress for homeowners in the ongoing class war waged against them by Wall Street. It seems now they were right all along. You may remember Kaptur as the take-charge legislator who advised homeowners in her Toledo-area district to demand that banks produce th…

If you roll into the Green Lantern on any given night, chances are you'll encounter Will. Now residing in Arlington with his fiancé, Luke, this Midwest-raised outdoorsman first came to Washington after attending St. John's College in Annapolis. A longtime bartender at various gay bars around the city, the 31-year-old says he most enjoys "getting homosexuals drunk." Though Will was shy, quiet and, as he puts it, "boring and dull" as a youth, he's since matured into a confident, funny man armed with quick bartending hands and an even quicker wit. Although he's sometimes been embarrassed on the job, the target of some vulgar sexual offers, Will says he enjoys the job because he likes meeting and talking with new people and getting them to crack a smile.
Shot on location at The Beacon Hotel in Washington. Visit beaconhotelwdc.com.
What's on your nightstand?A lamp, an alarm clock. I wouldn't keep anything on a nightstand. I have friends come over my house. Do you want to ask me what's in the closet?
Okay, what's in the closet?A bunch of pornography, some lube and condoms, stuff I haven't used in a long time. Some dusty dildos.
What are your three favorite TV shows of all time?Battlestar Galactica, Battlestar Galactica, and Lost. I can't say Battlestar Galactica three times. Well, I can. But I don't want people to think I'm crazy.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?I would have the same superpower as the Scarlet Witch. She's able to affect the outcome of any probabilistic event.
If you could do any job in the world, what would it be?I would be a professor at St. John's College. I like the breadth and depth of conversations you get into when you get to talk about Aristotle and Plato and Tolstoy and Euclid, and all the sciences and mathematics.
You're stranded on a desert island with one person. Who do you pick?Bear Grylls. He could feed me and treat me right. I mean sexually, of course. He's a very attractive man.

You'd probably have to eat snails and other nasty stuff. As long as there's something on Bear I get to eat, too.
What annoys you?People who are entitled or rude in their behavior, especially at a bar.
What pleases you?People who are polite and generous in their behavior, especially at a bar.
What's your greatest fear?Spiders. Every type of spider. Oh, and bugs. Anything that has its shell on the outside. So I guess the guys from Halo, too. Anything with an exoskeleton.
Roller coasters: wooden or steel?Steel, because the wooden ones, you're just sitting in a bowl, going around. But the steel ones you get to flip, and go upside-down, and around all over the place, and there's potential you'll accidentally kick somebody's head off. Which happened one time when I was at a Six Flags.
What? They actually had to close the whole damn park. This dude lost his hat and jumped over the fence, into the "Don't Go Here" area, and when the roller coaster went by, someone's leg hit the kid's head and snapped it off.
What's your guilty pleasure?Laffy Taffy.
What turns you on?Does Laffy Taffy count? No, beards and jockstraps.
What turns you off?Glitter.
What's your idea of a romantic getaway?Camping on Assateague. Just pulling up with a tent, and some food and firewood, building a fire on the beach.

Define good in bed.Responsive and aggressive.
Can men fake it? Should they?I've spit on many a back before.
If you were a porn star, what would your name be and what would you be known for?Ty Pennington. And I would be known for Extreme Ass Makeover.
Name two people you don't ever want to picture having sex.Any priest and any child.
What's the best tip you ever got?To go back to school. I know you mean money, but money comes and goes.
What's the craziest thing someone ever ordered from you?Someone asked me to pee in a water bottle once. I didn't do it.
When you go to a bar, what do you order?Diet Coke.
Gin or Vodka?Gin.
Scotch or Bourbon?Bourbon.
Wine or Beer?Beer.

Mustard, Mayo or Ketchup?Ketchup.
Miley or Britney? That's a hard one. Britney.
What's your favorite cocktail to make?Budweiser. It is simple and easy and my fingers don't get sticky.
You become master of the world. What's your first act?To establish a committee!
Is cuddling the best, or a waste of time? The best. It is nice and calm and comfortable and easy and warm.
What are you most grateful for?Luke. My fiancé. We've been engaged for a year and together for five.
What's your motto? No le illegitimus catarate. "Don't let the bastards shit on you."
