The Pope Books Take That for the Next Vatican Show

After this weeks Royal Variety Performance (the one where Duchess Camilla was attacked with a stick when caught up in the London riots), the Pope has booked Take That. The show included hundreds of near naked male dancers.

Naked from the back

The five Take That members sang on top of a raised platform while the remainder of the stage was covered in male dancers wearing nothing but flesh-coloured jockstraps.

As the song continued the men re-enacted the five poses on the front of the band?s new album, Progress.

Amnesty International called for an immediate repeal of a new law in the Indonesian province of Aceh punishing anyone caught having gay sex or extramarital sex with 100 lashes, saying the legislation would stoke homophobia and harassment. The law punishes anybody caught engaging in consensual gay sex with 100 lashes, 100 months in jail or a fine of 1,000 grams of gold.

ACLU and Lambda Legal Ask Supreme Court to Reject Motion to Delay Virginia Marriages

Lawyers for Class of All Same-Sex Couples in Virginia Also Seek Speedy Review on Merits if Stay is Granted
August 18, 2014
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: 212-549-2666, media@aclu.org
Richmond, Va. ? Today, the American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU of Virginia, and Lambda Legal will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to deny the motion filed Thursday by Prince William County Clerk Michle McQuigg seeking to stay the recent Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in Schaefer v. Bostic striking down Virginia?s discriminatory marriage ban.

"We will do everything we can to ensure that same-sex couples do not have to wait a day longer than necessary to finally receive the dignity and protection that only comes with marriage," said James Esseks, director of the ACLU Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Project, who argued the case for the class before the federal appeals court. "The historic Supreme Court case that affirmed the right of people of different races to marry started in in Virginia. In the 47 years since then, committed same-sex couples in the commonwealth have been patiently waiting for the freedom to marry the person they love."

The organizations also will request that, if the Court decides to grant the stay, it should accept the case for full review as quickly as possible in order to minimize the harm that would be caused by the delay of the Fourth Circuit decision.

"We will fight these last-ditch desperate attempts to delay the inevitable arrival of the day when same-sex couples can marry in Virginia," Jon Davidson, Legal Director at Lambda Legal, said. "But if the Court grants a stay, we want this issue to be decided as quickly as possible."

"The Fourth Circuit finally ruled to let us get married and we are anxious to finally plan our wedding," said Joanne Harris, who with Jessica Duff is one of the named plaintiff couples in the lawsuit. "Jessi and I are prepared to continue to fight, but we shouldn?t have to wait any longer."

The ACLU and Lambda Legal represent a certified class in the lawsuit that includes all Virginia same-sex couples. Harris and Duff of Staunton, who are class representatives, have been together for 11 years and are raising a five-year-old son, Jabari. They had a commitment ceremony in 2011. Christy Berghoff and Victoria Kidd of Winchester, who are also class representatives, were married in Washington, DC two years ago, but are considered single in their home state of Virginia. They have a one-year-old daughter, Lydia.

"Marriage is a fundamental right of all Virginians," said Claire Guthrie Gastaaga, executive director of the ACLU of Virginia. "The Fourth Circuit?s decision sent a message to every committed and married couple in the commonwealth that they are equal in the eyes of the law. The Virginia ACLU is proud to be able to say that we were advocates for the Lovings almost 50 years ago and grateful also to have had the privilege of representing the loving couples across Virginia who should not have to wait even one more day before they gain the freedom to marry."

Last month, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit affirmed a district court ruling striking down Virginia?s ban on marriage for same-sex couples. The decision did not take effect immediately, but is scheduled to go into effect August 21, unless the stay filed with Chief Justice John Roberts, the Circuit Justice for the Fourth Circuit, is granted. If the Supreme Court doesn?t grant review of the decision, the appeals court decision is final and all same-sex couples in Virginia who want to get married or want their marriages recognized will be able to do so. The ruling could also impact similar bans in the remaining Fourth Circuit states (North Carolina, South Carolina, and West Virginia) that continue to discriminate against same-sex couples.

ACLU of Wisconsin Files Suit on Behalf of Same-Sex Couples Married in Wisconsin

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: 212-549-2666, media@aclu.org
MILWAUKEE, Wis. ? Today, the American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU of Wisconsin, and Mayer Brown LLP filed suit in federal court on behalf of same-sex couples married in Wisconsin during the week after June 6 Bloechl-Karlsen v. Walker. This filing follows last week's decision out of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals that upheld a previous ruling by the District Court that found Wisconsin's ban on marriage for same-sex couples unconstitutional.
The ACLU, on behalf of their clients, is seeking the recognition of the marriages of four same-sex couples legally married in Wisconsin during the week between the District Court's decision overturning the ban on marriage for same-sex couples and her subsequent stay of that ruling.
"Our clients have married in Wisconsin and that isn't something the State can take away from them or refuse to recognize," said Larry Dupuis, legal director of the ACLU of Wisconsin. "The State of Wisconsin has placed hundreds of same-sex couples, including our clients, in an untenable position of not knowing if their marriages will be respected and recognized or simply ignored. Even if Judge Crabb's stay means that for a while no more same-sex couples can marry, the Constitution does not allow the State to undo or ignore the marriages that already took place."
Stacie Christian, one of the plaintiffs in the case, said, "Julie and I enjoyed one of the greatest moments of our lives the day our state granted us the same freedom to marry as any other loving couple. We made a lifetime commitment to each other 21 years ago, affirmed our marriage four years ago through our church, and again made a lifetime commitment to each other on the courthouse lawn on June 9-one that is about stability, responsibility, and building our family. We hope that those vows on June 9 will soon be as honored by our state as they are by us."
The ACLU has been working for the rights of LGBT people since its first gay rights case, in 1936. The organization also filed the first ever freedom-to-marry lawsuit for same-sex couples in 1970, and represented Edie Windsor in her successful challenge to the federal Defense of Marriage Act in June 2013. Since that time, the ACLU has filed thirteen federal marriage lawsuits on behalf of same-sex across the country."

Is Simon Cowell Gay?

With the X-factor back on prime time TV in Britain, all of the tabloids are busy scraping up as much muck as they can and slinging it at everyone in the hope it will stick to someone. This week it was Simon Cowell's turn. Tough as an old leather handbag, Simon Cowell is not going to blink an eye at the rumours going around that he is gay.

I don't think Cowell is on anyones gaydar, but co judge Louis Walsh this week cleared it up for us, stating this week that his 51-year-old friend is easily "distracted by a pair of breasts".

Lois Walsh told Britain's Daily Mail newspaper this week that, "He's not gay. Not at all. He's camp. He's theatrical. But he's absolutely not gay. No way. He loves women. Haven't you seen the way he looks at girls? He'll get distracted by a pair of breasts."

Well I guess that clears it up then.

One Direction Gay Ad for Nintendo

Those One Direction guys are so metro-sexual with their tactile hugging and playfulness. They are toally surrounded by those One Direction Gay rumours. Irrespective of that, just like JLS they have an advertising deal with Nintendo! The only trouble with this is, they haven't released any music yet. The same thing happened with JEdward - thankGod they didn't release any music.

Getting an ad deal with Nintendo is really basically because they are famous for being an X-Factor contestant and of course for being cute, popular..... They are also at the top of their career (to date) and may have signed up for peanuts. JEdward allegedly earned 3 in their first year from PAs and advertising deals.

Anyway they are definitely getting cuter since they appeared on the X-factor?

ACLU-NJ Calls on Department of Defense to End Discriminatory Practice Against Transgender Veterans

ACLU-NJ action challenges DOD?s denial to change discharge documents to reflect true gender of transgender former service members
August 11, 2014
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: 212-549-2666, media@aclu.org
On July 30, The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ) submitted two applications to the Department of Defense?s Army Review Boards Agency on behalf of two New Jersey-based transgender military veterans who are petitioning to have their new legal names fully recognized by the Army. Specifically, they seek a change to the principal document that a military veteran uses to prove a veteran?s status, known as the ?DD-214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty.?

According to the Williams Institute, a national think tank at UCLA Law School, an estimated 134,300 American transgender veterans encounter substantial obstacles to obtaining post-service benefits because the names and genders memorialized on their military service discharge documents no longer match their names and genders following from the end of their service. This inconsistency might deprive them of benefits or services, or could subject them to invasive questions requiring personal information to explain discrepancies between documents.

The ACLU-NJ has taken action on behalf of Jennifer, a Sergeant Major who served in the United States Army for 29 years, and Nicolas, a New Jersey National Guardsman who served for 9 years. ?It?s incredibly difficult when the self you present to the world doesn?t match a piece of paper meant to represent you,? said Jennifer, who served four tours including in Iraq and Afghanistan, receiving numerous awards for bravery. "I want my medical history to be protected and to be able to start a new chapter in my life without constantly being forced to look to the past."

The DD-214 form determines veterans' eligibility for benefits and legal protections tied to military service. Veterans need this document to engage in a wide range of activities in public life, including securing a home loan, taking the bar exam, or applying for a job with an employer that gives veterans preference in hiring. Transgender veterans not only risk the denial of these many benefits because of inconsistencies on the DD-214, but also face invasive questions every time this document is presented.

"When applying for a job, the only thing I want to bring with me is my qualifications ? not a pile of papers explaining in unnecessary detail who I am," said Nicolas, who served throughout the United States during his time with the National Guard. "With a simple fix, the military could make life much easier for countless veterans. With new regulations prohibiting discrimination against gender identity within the federal government, the federal government should take steps to make that kind of discrimination that much more unlikely."

The DOD?s review board has thus far refused to amend the DD-214s, expressing an interest in preserving the historical accuracy of military records. However, the ACLU-NJ contends that the board has the authority ? as well as an imperative -- to change this policy and thereby prevent the continued injustice facing transgender service members. Not changing the document is a form of discrimination against transgender veterans.

"Transgender service members bear substantial burdens when they cannot use their DD-214s without fear of discrimination," said ACLU-NJ Deputy Legal Director Jeanne LoCicero. "Despite having served honorably in the military and earning the right to an accurate and complete picture of their military service, transgender veterans struggle with challenges the Department of Defense could easily alleviate by recognizing the needs of a group of veterans above an abstract principle. If anything, keeping the previous name is the greater inaccuracy, and the change would correct the record to reflect that veteran?s fundamental true identity."

Montana GOP policy: Make homosexuality illegal

HELENA, Mont. (AP) – At a time when gays have been gaining victories across the country, the Republican Party in Montana still wants to make homosexuality illegal.

The party adopted an official platform in June that keeps a long-held position in support of making homosexual acts illegal, a policy adopted after the Montana Supreme Court struck down such laws in 1997.

The fact that it’s still the official party policy more than 12 years later, despite a tidal shift in public attitudes since then and the party’s own pledge of support for individual freedoms, has exasperated some GOP members.

“I looked at that and said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’” state Sen. John Brueggeman, R-Polson, said last week. “…

I've seen a lot of ads for marriage equality, but for some reason this one got to me. It's from Basic Rights Oregon, our state-wide gay rights organization. They're raising money to put gay marriage up for a vote in Oregon, probably in 2012, to overturn anti-gay amendment. But first they're running campaigns like this one on cable TV stations. If all works out as we plan, Oregon could be the first state to legalize gay marriage by a popular vote.

One Direction - Trouble in Da House

There is trouble in the house - the X Factor house that is, between the boys in One Direction.

Inside the house the boys are bitchin and fighting for the mirror. Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Zain Malik and Niall Horan have been doing really well with X factor fans, so much so that there is plenty of cat calling and nail scratching over who is the most popular.

There is so much friction in the group. The other boys are jealous that Harry and Liam are getting all the press attention. It?s a real sore point.

Louis [Tomlinson], Niall [Horan] and Zain [Malik] are worried that they aren?t as popular and that no-one knows who they are.

Liam?s mother is adding to the heat by telling him to scratch those other boys eyes out, as he is the most popular. She said this week

?Liam has a very strong following.
?I can?t speak for the other boys, I don?t know about their solo careers, but Liam gigged all over the country so he has both options open really.?

Pretty Airplanes

Jes from Dayton Ohio recently contacted me to tell me about an art project she completed. She was invited by the city to cover this model F16 jet with art. Since she is a mosaic artist, this is what she came up with. Jess said:I covered the Jet with stained glass because glass is the most beautiful media in the world ;)I wanted to show a larger range of color and knew that a rainbow would be perfect. The plane is meant to be beautiful more than anything else. I wanted people to want to know what she is all about. A beautiful sculpture that says I'm proud to be gay and in the military. I hope this Rainbow F16 serves as a reminder that we need to defeat the BAN on gay men and women serving our country. Equality is beautiful.Jes's plane will be on display in a bank in Dayton, Ohio. Thanks for sharing Jes!

Gaga speaks, Reid acts on ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Does Lady Gaga run the U.S. Senate?

A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday a vote to repeal the military’s ban of openly gay and lesbian soldiers had been planned for next week before the singer made waves with a plea during a daytime talk show.

The pop star known for flashy performances and eccentric style called on Reid to repeal the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres that aired Monday.

Reid’s campaign and Gaga traded talking points on Twitter after the lawmaker announced the vote. Reid told Gaga repealing the measure was the right thing to do.

Campaign spokesman Kelly Steele said Reid does not take cues from Gaga.

Irene Monroe: Black children are "beloved and beaten"

"Beloved and beaten" is a phrase that best depicts how many African American children ? past and present ? are disciplined.
It is an authoritative type of African-American parenting discipline style that is painfully revered. Yet, in too many incidents, it continues to be uncritically passed along generationally.
When Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was indicted on allegation of child abuse, he admitted to using the disciplinary methods passed down by his father.

The Rev. Irene Monroe looks at the roots of African-American corporal punishment of children, and urges us to break from from a shackle of our past.

No gays at the Chymorvah guesthouse Cornwall

Martin Hall and his civil partner Stephen Preddy, were turned away from a homophobic guesthouse at Marizion in Corwall, on the grounds of "we dont allow unmarried couples to sleep in our guesthouse". Given that Hall and Preddy are in a civil partnership, this is a bit hard to believe.

It transpires that the owners are some sort of religious nut cases who have taken some line from the Bible a little to far. It is incredible in this day and age that people still think this way. It is obviously far more important to ignore the "LOVE" and "ACCEPTANCE" message from their faith and focus on - shock horror - the possibility that two people might actually have SEX.

Peter and Hazelmary Bull denied the allegation that they discriminated against Martyn Hall and Steven Preddy because they were gay, but insisted their faith meant they believed unmarried couples should not share a room under their roof.

A second case of homophobic prejudice. Sad old couple!

Vancouver Queers :: Will You Be at Davie + Howe?

Vancouver is a-talking about what's coming to Davie & Howe in October and it's all the buzz.... Much speculation has been going around about what would be going into the prime intersection in gay-town. While I was glad to hear it's not going to be a Starbuck's or a BlockBuster or yet another Safeway, I couldn't get the skinny on what was coming to the location exactly. I'm super intrigued, though, as I like the way "whatever-it-is" is flirting with the gay community. What I Did Find OutIt's going to be a new Canadian brand and that they are launching in Vancouver before going national. Hmm.... a brand of what? We also heard from a very reliable source that this new yet to be named Canadian brand is going to definitely support the LGBT community. Even though it's quite coy, I'm very curious--curious enough to join the online bandwagon! You should, too.I'll keep my ear to the ground and let you know what I can uncover between now and Oct. I'm excited to see so many cute faces out and about and online! Join me in the fun.

What is Mark Regnerus' new international video project?

Mark Regnerus, who is now infamous in American political circles for his flawed, widely repudiated, far-right-concoted "study" that was designed to slight same-sex parents in order to influence the 2012 elections and the Supreme Court, but that has ultimately backfired on the movement that designed it. But now it seems that Mr. Regnerus might have international aspirations.
In a 9/17/14 Catholic radio appearance, right in the middle of a lengthy discussion on marriage equality, Regnerus revealed that he was just in a number of other nations filming some sort of video series that is presumably on the same subject:

SOURCE: Relevant Radio, 9/17/14
All of the nations that Regnerus mentioned have some sort of marriage equality or LGBT rights debate going on. In Mexico, recent court developments have allowed marriage equality in some areas but not others. France has been a bit of a ground zero for American activists, with Regnerus' allies at the National Organization For Marriage working very closely with Parisian activists in the go-nowhere hope of overturning equality. In Lebanon, a landmark court ruling recently determined that same-sex relations are not a crime. And then in Nigeria, you have a similar situation as Uganda, with local activists and courts literally debating whether or not LGBT people should have to spend lifetimes in prison or face the death penalty.
I guess it could be coincidence that these nations, which have all been in the news over the past two years precisely for their LGBT rights/marriage debates, just so happen to be the locales where a man best known for his anti-equality activism did his filming. But considering he mentioned them as part of his broader discussion about LGBT rights, I think it's a pretty safe bet that whatever he was filming, and for whomever he was filming it, involves international advocacy against LGBT equality which, as as many of us who pay attention to these things keep noting, seems to be the new focus for American activists who are dismayed by their fortunes here at home.
Perhaps Regnerus is helping NOM launch its long-percolating International Organization For Marriage? It's worth asking the question.

INTJ Personality Type: 'Introvert' Does Not Mean 'Shy'

I've been learning a lot in my new media classes. The one that I'm taking that is giving me a grade for this blog has been especially helpful. In analyzing what keywords people use to arrive at my blog, I noticed a special one: INTJ. The INTJWhat the hell is that, you ask?IntrovertediNtuitive (don't think that "N" instead of "I" shit doesn't bother us because it does...)ThinkingJudgingI think we will start talking about this on a regular basis but for today, I felt it was important to get a fundamental truth out of the way:Being an introvert does not mean that you're shy. I'm very outgoing and can talk to and get along with almost anyone. Do I want to?Hell no. But I've learned how to be friendly and a good listener out of necessity and I'll do it if I must; it's just not my favorite thing. An introvert is someone who recharges by being alone. An extrovert gets charged up by being around people. To be clear: It has nothing to do with shyness or being outgoing. You are almost certain to have an introvert in your life so I thought I would borrow this handy chart that I found on Pinterest to help guide you in your care for the introvert (INTJ) in your life: If you offer this type of love and support to your introvert, you will be valued and prized above all others! You may even be invited into our private world.

We must straighten our backs…

We trusted that following conservative and STRAIGHT (for those Prop 8 supporters) Justice Phillips’ September 9th decision that “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” was unconstitutional on two counts, the Senate would vote to uphold the integrity of our Nation by voting for the repeal of this pathetic law. The House had done so in June, along with the Senate Armed Services Committee. Now, backed by an unconstitutionality ruling, certainly the Senate would end the ban once and for all.

Fail.

Instead, on September 21st Sen. John McCain (R-Az.), a POW and a former hero to many of us veterans, single handedly obstructed justice with a filibuster. Sadly, the Senate could not muster 60 Senators willing to vote to override him.

No more than two…

‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ injunction now up to judge

SAN DIEGO, Ca (AP) – U.S. government lawyers are trying to stop a federal judge from issuing an injunction that would immediately do what President Obama has yet to accomplish so far in his first term: Halt the military’s ban on openly gay troops. Now it is up to U.S. District Court Judge Virginia Phillips to decide if she is willing to do that.

The White House says the legal filing Thursday by the U.S. Department of Justice attorneys in a federal court in Riverside follows government procedure by defending an act of Congress that is being challenged, but it does not detract from the president’s efforts to get ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ repealed.

“This filing in no way diminishes the president’s firm commi…

I'm 45, female and just discovered I'm bi. Now what?

I'm 45, female and just discovered I'm bi. Now what?

Yes, I know it seems unlikely, and the nearest I can figure is my arousal/desire for every single one of my lovers has occurred after being desired, rather than finding someone hot in advance. I was married for a very long time, and possibly oblivious to any gay come-ons, in my premarital time. For the sake of the information I seek, can we please assume that I am correct - that I am bi, and that this wasn't just experimental? (which has been suggested to me by a straight friend). I had very satisfying sex with a close friend a week ago after she flirted relentlessly with me for 6 weeks (yes, I'm clueless). I find I want more, and not just/necessarily with her. There were aspects of it very different to sex with a man (which I also enjoy immensely) which were just delightful, not least the emotional closeness, the softer kisses, the different body to hold in my arms, the feel of ... yeah, you get the idea.

So I don't know where to start, and feel like a near virgin again, but old enough this time to realise there's so many complications.

Here's some:
I'm concerned about coming out at some stage to my adult but somewhat innocent children, who still don't cope well with me having sex with someone other than their father, particular as their father and I didn't share a bedroom for most of our marriage.

I'm wondering if I should come out to my siblings - or is my sex-life none of their business, until I turn up at a barbecue with a female companion? They're not homophobic, but I think it will be a shock to them, simply because I've never identified that way.

I've heard that some lesbian women find bi-women problematic.
I don't know how to present my lack of experience at this age to potential female lovers. I don't know how to indicate my interest in a woman, in a way that is different to overtures of friendship. I really don't know know what to do in bed. I'm not sure lesbian porn is the way to go, if I could find it, because like, I wouldn't recommend porn to anyone to learn about sex.

I wonder if I should tell my friends, and long-term colleagues and I do work in a very gay-friendly workplace, but is my sexuality an inappropriate topic at work?

I'm a student and could join the uni queer support group, but the members are likely to be much younger than me, and with very different issues.

I'm confused that it took me this long to find out. I feel somewhat guilty that I didn't have to go through discrimination in my youth because I didn't know.

I'm kind of horrified that I'm so clueless about myself that I didn't know. I feel my self-identity has just been turned upside, and I'm not sure who I am anymore, and it feels awfully late to go looking for myself.

I wonder if I should go to gay clubs.

The very few straight friends that I've shared with seem to think it's no big deal, the males saying most women are bi, and whatever, the females telling me I'm still the same person I was before and they love me, which is nice and accepting of both sets, but not very helpful if you know what I mean.

I don't know where to start. I don't know what I don't know. I wonder if I'm making too big a deal of this.

Bonus question: my arousal/desire for every single one of my lovers has occurred after being desired - this probably explains why I have such difficulty masturbating to orgasm without company (and I do have a very good imagination, also can come very easily with a partner), but also makes me further question my sexuality - why is it so much tied into external influences. What's up with that?

Arkansas AG asks state's high court to uphold gay marriage ban

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas -- The Attorney General's Office is asking the Arkansas Supreme Court to uphold the state's gay marriage ban, arguing a county judge was wrong to say it violated the state and U.S. constitutions.
Attorney General Dustin McDaniel's office on Monday asked justices to uphold the 2004 constitutional amendment and an earlier state law defining marriage as between a man and a woman. Pulaski County Judge Chris Piazza struck down the ban earlier this year, and 541 same-sex couples were married before the ruling was suspended by the state Supreme Court pending appeals.
