Amar en Tiempos Revueltos - season 5, recap 10

Like I said in the previous recap, we will be entering the dark ages for a while. Ana and Teresa got in a huge fight at José Maria’s funeral over the fact that they’ve both changed and things are definitely not going to be good for quite a while.

I promise you that it’ll get better, we just have to sit through some pretty silly, idiotic and downright stupid things before we get there. I promise you though that this buildup of tensions and emotions will definitely be worth the wait once it all boils over. So let’s get this show on the road, shall we?

After the blowup at José Maria’s funeral and Ana walking away from her, Teresa has been contemplating what has been going on with Héctor. But Héctor has some news of his own; because of what’s going on with the abuse case, he is being transferred to Africa. Yes, you heard that right; Africa. Dude is being sent off to Africa because he is meddling in something that they don’t want him meddling in.

Teresa, of course, is shocked and saddened.

He tells her that they will have to leave everything behind, but somehow I don’t see Teresa packing a bag and running off in a hurry. Teresa just says ‘yes’ a couple of times and Héctor makes it clear that if he doesn’t take the transfer, he will have to resign, which means he’ll be out of a job and there won’t be an income for them to live on.

Ana, unaware of what is going on with Teresa and her husband, is talking to Rosa on the streets. It seems that Teresa told Rosa that she wasn’t in office today and she felt that Teresa was just giving her excuses and she assumed that Ana gave her the order to tell Rosa to stay out of her office. Ana tells her that this wasn’t the case and that she’s sorry if Rosa got that impression, but that a friend is always welcome. Rosa tells her that she felt left behind and that she wasn’t sure if Ana would still be her friend. Ana tells her that this is not the case and that she usually doesn’t leave her friends behind. She tells Rosa to instead call her next time, to avoid these types of situations.

I’ve got a feeling Teresa is going to be getting a lot of slack for that later on.

Teresa is talking to Manolita about how things are changing lately, but that this is just the case sometimes, whether they like it or not and that Ana is simply thinking about other things… and people.

Yes, other people. Teresa’s part of it all is that she’s insanely jealous. But hey, she’s in love, even if she doesn’t realize it herself yet.

There’s a scene in-between with Rosa and a friend about a theatre contract not being renewed. I’m sure it’ll make sense soon, but I’ll just skip over it now.

Ana and Teresa are having a mild disagreement over something that should have been done in months, or something. It doesn’t really matter, what matters is that the two of them clearly still care for each other, but they are trying to outwit each other over it. Eventually they get to the point: Rosa. Ana asks Teresa how she dares to screen her visits from people. Teresa rebuffs that she’s done it all the time (before they broke up, I mean before they had their falling out) and since Ana told her she was busy, she didn’t think anything of it.

Ana tells her coldly that she’ll manage her own time and that Teresa shouldn’t lie about her and that this is the last time that she’ll do it. She then orders Teresa to do that thing in months and walks away.

Teresa is not a happy camper.

We switch to Rosa and her friend at a brothel – Rosa is horrified but her friend doesn’t think anything of it, times are difficult after all.

I know these scenes will make sense eventually so I’m putting them in just in case, even though I absolutely dislike Rosa.

Back at Casa Rivas, Alfonso tells Ana that Héctor is being transferred to Tetouan (which is in Morocco, which is in North Africa. Yes, I did have to look that up) and Ana is absolutely horrified at the thought of Teresa (and Héctor) moving away.

She goes on a rant about how Teresa might have known earlier when they were talking and feels guilty about talking to her friend like that and not knowing what was going on. She immediately calls up Teresa, mumbling to herself about being so blind and not realizing Teresa was in trouble, while waiting for Teresa to pick up the phone. No one picks up the phone and Ana gets even more panicky.

The next day at work, Teresa breaks the news to Ana about leaving the Stores. Ana asks her why and stupidly wonders if it is because she’s not paying Teresa enough while she full well knows that it is because of the transfer. It completely irks Teresa, as it should, and she starts making it very clear to Ana that she’s not the kind of person who cares about financial matters. She calms down a little when Ana asks her if it is a personal reason and if she will tell Ana about it. Teresa (lying through her teeth) tells her it is not important, but that she is leaving Madrid as well. She tells it is because of ‘work issues’ with Héctor, but doesn’t explain any further. Ana asks her that if maybe somebody did something Héctor could stay, but Teresa quickly tells her that there is nothing they want from anyone.

Ana resigns herself to what is going to happen and tells Teresa everything will be sorted for Teresa to say goodbye and then Teresa leaves, giving us a heartbreaking scene.

Remember that perfume bottle Teresa is holding? Yes, that’s the same one she got from Ana in the beginning. She still has it and, like any other person in love, smells it when she’s feeling sad so she can remember back to when everything was still alright.

Teresa is still in the locker room, upset, when Alfonso gets in and comforts his sister. She admits that she should have just told Ana about the transfer and everything else that is happening, but she just couldn’t. She tells him that the same thing that happened to their father is happening to them; pride, and she bursts into tears as Alfonso embraces her in a comforting hug. She tells him she just can’t seem to get a grip to what is happening between them (Ana and Teresa).

After that emotional scene we jump forward in time to June 1952. The girls are still not talking to each other and it’s very much hurting Ana. She picks up the phone a couple of times, but she just can’t seem to bring herself to actually dial the number.

Right after she puts the phone down for probably the millionth time, Alfonso has a go at her for not being there for her friend, especially since she’s pregnant and very much a fragile young woman. Ana tells him off for speaking to her like that – she herself doesn’t even know why they’re not speaking anymore, but she wasn’t the one that hurt her. Alfonso just tells the butler to prepare the guest bed, he’ll be sleeping there from now on.

I don’t know whatever the heck happened to moving to Africa, but Teresa is still working at the Stores and Ana is trying to chat her up to see how she’s doing. Teresa, however, isn’t exactly taking the bait and just continues working.

I can’t quite figure out the look on her face, I think it’s a cross between being hurt and a bit offended.

At the brothel, where Rosa’s been working for a while now, Rosa gets a marriage proposal from one of her clients. I am still not sure where it’s going, but I’m sure it’ll all come together in the end.

We finally see what the heck happened to Africa because Héctor just told his boss to shove the transfer up his ass. Albeit a bit politer; he tells him that he doesn’t want to belong to the PD anymore.

Ana later shows up a Teresa’s house – she came to talk to her about what happened earlier. Ana wanted to talk, but Teresa wasn’t willing. Teresa tells her that they’ve never had much to tell each other. Teresa completely goes off on Ana saying that nothing is the same for them anymore, not for her, Ana, nor Alfonso and Héctor. Everything has changed and not for the good either.

Ana asks her when she’s ever hurt her and Teresa goes off on another tangent about Ana’s rich girl status. Ana, naturally, takes offence; she thought they had settled that part a while back. Teresa, however, says that she just cannot trust Ana and that Ana doesn’t even worry about her friends.

She tells Ana that she’s selfish and was a fool to think they’d ever be proper friends.

Ana, obviously hurt by Teresa’s words, fights back the tears while she lashes out a few words herself. She tells Teresa she was a fool thinking she’d be able to talk things through and sort everything out. How she was devastated about the way Teresa gave her the cold shoulder earlier at work and that she very much swallowed her pride to come and visit Teresa. Teresa tells her that on the next occasion Ana should just call.

Ana tells her there won’t be a next occasion and walks out the door, leaving us with a heartbroken Teresa.

Next week:
It’s been four months since their falling out, but Ana and Teresa are still not on speaking terms. Alfonso’s got some functioning problems and Ana starts hallucinating. Read previous recaps here.
