Touring North Carolina: from the Outer Banks to the Great Smoky Mountains

Perhaps no state in the Southeast offers a greater variety of natural scenery than North Carolina, one of the fastest-growing states in the eastern half of the country, and one that's slowly but surely becoming more welcoming toward gay and lesbian visitors, especially as it becomes politically and socially less conservative. The state enjoys, by far, the longest stretch of coastline on the Atlantic beyond Florida - vacationers regularly flock to the Outer Banks as well as charming and historic Wilmington and the surrounding Cape Fear Coast. Head west to the inland Appalachian Mountains, and you'll find dense woodlands and crystalline lakes as well as the gay-friendly, artsy small city of Asheville.
