'Gay therapy' ban may get judges' support

'Gay therapy' ban may get judges' support

A federal appeals court seemed inclined Wednesday to uphold California's first-in-the-nation law prohibiting therapists from trying to "cure" minors of homosexuality.

Susan Graber, another member of the three-judge panel, said past rulings have established that the Constitution "permits regulation of conduct that includes speech," including lawyers' communications with clients and doctors' advice to patients.

If the ban takes effect, minors "would not be able to get that counseling that has helped their self-esteem and their relationships," said Mathew Staver, president of the conservative legal organization Liberty Counsel and attorney for groups of therapists and parents challenging the law.
