Nation's First Out Lesbian Judge Retires from San Francisco Court

Mary Morgan, the nation?s first openly gay judge, announced her retirement from the San Francisco Superior Court on Friday.  Judge Morgan, 65, was appointed to the municipal court in 1981 by recently re-elected Gov. Jerry Brown. In 1993, Morgan left the court and moved to Washington D.C., where she ran a domestic violence legal clinic and worked in the Justice Department. She was named to the Superior Court in 2003 by former Gov. Gray Davis. The court now has 10 gay and lesbian judges.
