State Attorney General Asks California Court to Lift Stay on Marriage Equality

On Tuesday, a letter from the State Attorney General Kamala Harris, in collaboration with the lawyers for two gay couples and the city of San Francisco, asked the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to allow marriage equality to resume in California. In the letter, Harris wrote, "The public interest weighs heavily against the government sanctioning such discrimination by permitting it to continue." Marriage equality has been on hold in the state while the 9th Circuit Court considers an appeal by Proposition 8?s sponsors of a trial judge?s ruling against the ban. The appeals court is awaiting direction from the California Supreme Court, which reiterated Tuesday that it would need at least until the end of the year to consider to the constitutionality of allowing ballot proposition sponsors to defend their measures in court when state officials will not. Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and current Gov. Jerry Brown refused to defend Proposition 8 and have asked the 9th Circuit court to allow marriage for lesbian and gay couples to resume during the appeal process.Related Media Coverage:The Associated Press - March 2, 2011"Calif.
