Proposed Bill Would Allow Discriminatory Restroom Policies in Maine

State Rep. Ken Fredette of Maine has introduced a bill that would allow public and private entities to dictate who can use which restrooms. Fredette?s bill permits discrimination against people whose gender identity differs from their birth-assigned sex. The issue was brought to light when Brianna Freeman, a transgender woman, sued a Denny?s Restaurant for refusing to let her use the women?s restroom in 2007. A more recent incident involved a sixth-grader who was denied use of the girl?s restroom by middle school officials. The Human Rights Commission ruled that the school had discriminated against the student, but Fredette believes the commission overstepped its bounds.Related Media Coverage:The Sun Journal - March 14, 2011"Bill Would Clarify Restroom Use"http://www.sunjournal.com/city/story/998475
