Ruling in Maine School Sets Precedent

A ruling by the Maine Human Rights Commission on September 20 is now compelling other schools across the state to examine how they accommodate transgender students. The ruling stated that a middle school in Orono discriminated against a transgender girl by not allowing her to use the girls? bathroom. Dr. James Morse, a Portland, Maine, superintendent, notes that there are transgender students of all ages at various schools in the state and that they are successful in his school system. Sarah Holmes of the Center for Sexuality and Diversity commented on the Sept. 20 ruling that, ?This student identifies as a girl, dresses as a girl, is perceived by her classmates as a girl,? and believes that transgender issues should be addressed earlier because there is growing awareness and support. There are currently no state policy guidelines for schools regarding transgender students, and Morse says this needs to change.Related Media Coverage:Necn.com ?
