Republican State Senator Voices Support for Maryland Marriage Bill

In Maryland, Republican State Sen. Allan Kittleman (District 9) stated that he will support a Senate bill for marriage equality. Kittleman planned to introduce legislation of his own, granting civil unions to all couples, but has reconsidered the proposal, citing his belief that the bill would not be favorably received by the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. He said he is "a strong proponent of personal and economic liberty/freedom,? and thus felt compelled to support the marriage equality bill. While Kittleman said that his religious views define marriage as between one man and one woman, he noted that the "government is not a theocracy,? and that his spirituality should not be the only influence on his decisions as a public servant.  The bill, known as the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act, would legalize marriage equality while allowing religious institutions to decide which marriages they will perform. Despite Kittleman's support, the Republican Senate Caucus opposes the bill, and Senate Minority Leader Nancy Jacobs said the issue will be debated extensively.
